Speaker 1 (00:02):
B a ya nusasaur. I'm Andrea Coleman coming up a
conversation with Maryland Governor Wes Moore, currently the only sitting
black governor in the US. But first, here's b I
in news.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Now, Black New York City Mayor Eric Adams is denying
claims he was bribed to quit the mayoral race after
Curtis Sliwa alleged Andrew Cuomo offered him money to drop out.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
No one has not offered money to leave the race,
and we would not accept it if it was offered.
That's not how you run politics in the city.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Pulls show Adams trailing badly, with Democrats Randmam Donnie leading,
Cuomo second and Sliwa third. The Trump administration is pulling
sixty five million dollars in grants from Magnet schools in
New York City, Chicago, and Fairfax, Virginia, saying they violated
civil rights laws. Officials ordered changes to transgender DEI and
black student success programs, but when districts refused, the funding
(00:55):
was cut. And The sixty fifth annual Skyview Open wrapped
up this week in Asheville, North Carolina. The tournament, known
as the longest running black owned golf event highlights black golfers.
I'm Amber Payton with Bi in News. Now back to you, Andrea.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
Thank you Amber. Yesterday's GOP leaders in Maryland endorsed dem
Aquatic Governor Wes Moore and his reelection bid today at
the Congressional Black Caucus Foundations fifty fourth Annual Legislative Conference.
Moore said their support is reflective of his desire to
work with everyone.
Speaker 4 (01:24):
I'm really proud of what we've gotten done already in
the state of Maryland, where you know, when I first
became the governor, we were forty third in the country
in unemployment, and now we're going on a year and
a half of amongst the lowest unemployment rates in the
entire country. That we have amongst the fastest drops in
violent crime and property crime anywhere in America. If you
look at you know, if you look at that's across
the state. But if you look at Baltimore, for example,
(01:46):
the last time the homicide rate was this low in
Baltimore City, I wasn't born yet. Like those the kind
of drops that we are now seeing that we're watching
our GDP increase, we're watching our population increase, like Maryland
is on the move.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
Yeah, what's what's been key?
Speaker 4 (02:00):
You know, I think the key has been partnership. I
think the key has been that we have you know,
this is a I am a leader who believes that
partnership produces progress. And so we're working closely with our
local elected leaders, working closely with the business community. We're
working closely with the community to make sure that their
voices are heard in all this because you know, you know,
I don't come from a political world. I don't come
from a political background, you know, I come from And
(02:22):
the reason I'm the governors because it wasn't because of
a party picked me. The people did. And that's why
I rock with and that's who we make sure we're
doing all of our policies with. But I think the
partnership piece is probably the most complicated piece right now
because that's the thing. We realize what we do not
have from this Trump vance administration is that it's not
(02:43):
just that they have decided to alter the relationship between
the federal government and our states. In many ways, they've
separate it. And so that's why when we know we've
been able to navigate really extraordinarily well as a state,
and because we fight for each other. But there is
no doubt that what we were seeing from the federal
government is a is a real challenge for each and
(03:05):
every one of us.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
Well, and you say that, but you actually have some
evidence of it too. As recent as yesterday, a group
of GOP leaders actually endorsed you in your re election campaign.
What's been key? Yeah, isn't that tremendous? What's been key
to forming that kind of collaboration and partnership and trust?
Speaker 4 (03:23):
Yeah, it's actually wild that, you know, we announced that
we were running for reelection and amongst the first people
that have come out and said we believe that the
governor deserves for more years are actually Republicans. And it's
not that we agree on everything, because it drives me,
we don't. But what has been fascinating is that they
say that I'm a person of my word, and I
(03:44):
say when I say that everyone that we're going to
create a table that is big enough that everyone's going
to have a seat, that I mean that. And honestly,
in many ways I got it from my time in
the military, where you know, I was seventeen when I
first joined the army, and my mother that assigned the
paperwork for me, but we learned something in our second
day of military training. Leave no one behind.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
