speaks out about the treatment of immigrants in America and
how it all relates to Black America. But first, here's
bin news. Now.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Black New York City Mayor Eric Adams is announcing two
new housing projects, converting Wilmsburg industrial buildings into nine hundred
homes and an East Harlem parking lot into eight hundred units.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
So instead of parking cars, we're going to park families so.
Speaker 4 (00:27):
They can enjoy a home where they can call their own.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
At least a quarter will be affordable. Since Adam's executive
order last year, eleven projects have been launched to create
nearly ten thousand homes. A second former city hall staffer
assuing Black New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell's administration, Tricia Diamond,
claimed she was fired for exposing misuse of at least
fifteen million dollars in pandemic relief funds, including money sent
to a nonprofit and a ninth Ward Stadium project. Another
(00:54):
similar lawsuit was filed earlier this month, and Sewn de
Decom's lawyers are arguing commercial voyeurism is not prostitution. As
they push to overturn his conviction. The fifty five year
old faces up to twenty years in prison, with sentencing
set for October third, if the verdict stands. I'm Amber
Payton with bi In News Now back to you, Andrea.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Thank you. Ember and twenty twenty three, voters in Florida's
tenth congressional district elected Maxwell Fross as are US representative.
Since taking office, Congressman Fross, the first member of gen
Z elected to federal office, has been a dedicated advocate
for human rights. We caught up with Congressman Fross as
a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's fifty fourth Annual Legislative Conference today,
(01:33):
where he expressed his concerns about immigration and the political
climate in America.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
There's a lot of people who don't see how what's
going on with isis directly connected to all of our rights,
whether you' an immigrant or not, and what's going on
As a president, he's an authoritarian and he had to
quickly find a way in an issue that he could
use to assert dominance over cities and towns and even
(01:58):
ones that he doesn't have a fret le local government,
and Ice is that for him? Ice and this immigration
issue is for him not just a conduit to fulfill
a campaign promise on immigration, but it's a conduit to
exert pressure on places he doesn't like. No matter what
the issue is, it can be any issue. We've seen
(02:19):
this happen time and time again in cities across this country.
And so that's why, you know, when we talk about
what's going on, it's not a massive deportation campaign. Deportation
is a legal process that can take upwards of a year.
People are not getting that process. What's going on is
people are being kidnapped and they're being trafficked to other states.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
So when you use the term like authoritarian regarding our president,
tell me exactly what you're meaning and what are you
basing that on, because that carries a whole lot of
meaning with it.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
It does, And I don't use that word lightly, and
I'm really not someone to I'm not someone who is
as a fan of, you know, hyperbole, especially in politics.
But when I call him an authoritarian, it's not a
name calling. I am describing. I am defining what we
are seeing happen in this nation right now. This is
a president who is in many cases illegally using the
(03:15):
government to stifle free speech, whether you're a college student,
whether you're someone who's trying to advocate, or whether you're
a comedian, or whether you're someone in the media, using
the government to infringe on that First Amendment. Right, This
is somebody who is suing people left and right personally
because maybe they've said something that he disagrees with. This
(03:37):
is somebody who is using the military. I mean, we're
in Washington, DC right now. Look no further than the
military being deployed on our streets against American people, and
so everything he's been doing left and right is literally
the definition of what authoritarian is.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
Congressmith FROs says he remains hopeful about the future the country.
