Speaker 1 (00:02):
Bia Nussasauer and Andrea Coleman reporting from the Congressional Black
clow Is Foundation's fifty fourth Annual Legislative Conference in DC.
Coming up, Congressman Now Green out of Houston shares his
thoughts on the recent redistricting effort that took place in
Texas adverse. Here's bi N News Now.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
President Trump is blaming radical left rhetoric for a deadly
shooting at a Texas ice facility. One person was killed
and two others critically hurt before the gunman took his
own life. The radical left is causing the problem.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Uh, They're out of control.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Trump also singled out black Texas Congressman Jasmine Crockett, accusing
Democrats of fueling hate and energizing the right. Former Vice
President Kamala Harris stopped in New York on her one
hundred and Seven Days book tour, reflecting on her brief
twenty twenty four presidential campaign. Her remarks were interrupted by
pro Palestinian protesters. Harris says she understands the crisis in Gaza,
calling it heartbreaking, but noted she is not in a
(00:53):
position to act since she's no longer in office and
Sean Diddy Combs is asking for leniency ahead of his
October third sentencing his sex trafficking case. His lawyers want
no more than fourteen months, which would mean released when
time served. He faces up to ten years after being
convicted of transporting women for prostitution. I'm Inmber Payton with
Bi in News. Now back to you, Andrea.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Thank you Amber. When Texas state lawmakers adopted new congressional
maps this summer, Congressman L Green was one of several
black lawmakers to be redrawn out of his current district. Today,
at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's fifty fourth Annual Legislative Conference,
he explained how the new maps could impact his congressional career.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
So the ninth congressional district was moved to the number
nine to an area that I could never represent, probably
because it won't elect a person who looks like me
or has my political affiliations. Well, but sometimes there is
a verse in a book that many of us live
(01:50):
and die by would rarely read. And this book the
Holy Bible. In fifty twenty of Genesis fifty twenty, there's
a verse what you intended for for harm? For harm,
I intended for good. Yeah, And What the president didn't
(02:12):
realize is that when they cracked and they packed, they
packed my home, the people that I've been representing into
this new district. It would probably be the most powerful
African American seat in the country this district. Barbara Jordan
was the first of African ancestry to represent one from
(02:35):
the eighteenth Congressional district, so they had the number eighteen,
but most of it is the district that I've been representing.
So I haven't said that I will be running from
the eighteenth, but it does make sense that I would
run where my home is.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
What's the hope for the people of Texas and your
heart for this state that has seemed to really come
under attack.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
My hope is that we will vote. We will vote,
notwithstanding all of the adversity that we're encountering. I think
we have to vote. We have to this vote. John Lewis,
that was something almost sacred, and it is what got
me into Congress. It is what got Barack Obama into
the presidency. It is what has made a difference in
(03:24):
our lives. Sure, there's more that could have been done
by any person that's held public trust, but that because
there's more that could have been done doesn't mean that
we shouldn't do all that we can to continue to
march on. A part of that march forward is marching
to the polls on election day. One of the greatest
steps a person can take is towards the polls on
(03:45):
election day.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
Congressman Green is also encouraging Black America to embrace August
as Slavery Remembrance Month to honor the sacrifice and contributions
of our ancestors. Learn more at Algreen dot house dot gov.
