Speaker 1 (00:01):
News when you wanted with Bloomberg News Now, I'm Doug Prisner.
We began in Australia and the latest on the mass
shooting in Sydney that killed fifteen people at a Honaker celebration.
The gunmen behind the attack were motivated by Islamic state ideology.
That's according to Australia's Prime Minister Anthony ALBANIZI. Here's Malanion

(00:21):
of the New South Wales Police.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
There has been reports in the news about our two
offenders traveling to the Philippines last month. I can confirm
that they did travel to the Philippines. The reasons why
they went to the Philippines and the purpose of that
and where they went when they were there is under
investigation at the moment. I also confirmed that the vehicle,
which is registered to the younger male, contained IEDs, but

(00:48):
I also confirmed that it contained two homemade Isis flags.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
Malilanion there. He is the Commissioner of the New South
Wales Police Force. The US military said it attacked three
boats accused of smuggling drugs in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.
Eight people were killed. In a post on social media,
the military said the strikes targeted designated terrorist organizations. President

(01:12):
Trump has sued the BBC for five billion dollars. The
President is accusing the broadcaster of defamation after a misleading
edit in a documentary film last year. That edit made
it appear as though Trump encouraged the January sixth, twenty
twenty one attack on the US Capitol. Now, the BBC
has already acknowledged the edited footage was wrong and its

(01:34):
issued an apology. Ford Motor has announced a major overhaul
of its electric vehicle strategy. The company will shift away
from evs and toward gas and hybrid vehicles, and this
will result in a charge of nineteen and a half
billion dollars. And as a part of the shift, Ford
is planning to scrap its next gen electric F series trucks.

(01:55):
Now the electric F one to fifty lightning pickup will
be converted into an extended range hybrid vehicle. Here is
Ford CEO Jim Farley speaking earlier to Bloomberg.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Well, look, we're unique from our competitors. We don't have
plants at are Electric. We have a whole business at Electric.
So we looked at that whole business and evaluated the
valuation of the assets and we made these decisions of
future products. The bottom line is the cash subset of
that is about five and a half billion of the
nineteen billion, and the ROI on that five and a

(02:26):
half billion is very attractive. These are great products, they're affordable.
That's where the market is today.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
Jim Farley there, he is the CEO of Ford Shares
and Ford. We're up one percent in late US trading.
A manhunt for the shooter who killed two students at
Brown University has entered its third day. Earlier, authorities released
a person of interest after determining the evidence pointed in
a different direction, and now law enforcement officials are pursuing

(02:53):
a new lead based on photos and videos of an
individual taken hours before the shooting. There is Providence Police
Chief Oscar Perez.

Speaker 4 (03:03):
Our work that initiated today and continues and to initiate
for a while since he started. We're up the forty
ninth hour, and there's no one that wants to put
these individual in handcuffs than.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
US Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez. Now, Brown University has
canceled remaining in person exams for the fall semester, except
for the Medical School and the NBA program. Students are
free to leave campus if they are able with essential
staff required to remain. We go to the latest on
war in Ukraine. Ukrainian and US officials wrapped up a

(03:38):
second day of talks in Berlin. US negotiators offered more
substantial security guarantees to Kiev as part of President Trump's
renewed push to end the war. Now, the Trump administration
offered to provide Ukraine with Article five like security guarantees.
That's a reference to NATO's Mutual Defense Clause. However, the

(03:58):
US did not provide any more details. Now, President Trump
has said the war is closer than ever to ending.
Even so, the US and Ukraine have different positions on territory.
Here is Evelyn Farcas executive director for the McCain Institute.

Speaker 5 (04:15):
It does feel like we're closer because we see the
Ukrainians making increasing number of concessions, and you know, taking
the NATO membership off the table is a huge security
guarantee option that they now no longer have, which is why,
of course they're looking for an Article five type guarantee
from the United States, a bilateral guarantee since they can't

(04:36):
get the multilateral one. But I'm afraid we don't know
what the Russian side is saying or planning, And there
I'm a little more skeptical even if they agree to
continue the talks or to a cease fire.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
Evelyn Farcas there from the McCain Institute. Federal authorities in
California say they have foiled a plot to set off
bombs on New Year's Eve. Four people have been wrested
from a group law enforcement is calling the Turtle Island
Liberation Front. Authority say the group was planning to plant
bombs at five different locations, but they would not specify where.

(05:12):
Here is First Assistant US Attorney Bill A. Sale.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
The charges we are announcing today stem from the defendants
and their co conspirators detailed coordinated plot to bomb multiple
US companies on New Year's Eve.

Speaker 6 (05:27):
Thankfully that plot has now been foiled.

Speaker 1 (05:29):
Bill as Sale there, he is First Assistant US Attorney.
The November Jobs Report will be released tomorrow before the
opening bell. We have a preview from Bloomberg's Michael McKee.

Speaker 6 (05:39):
This Job's report will be a bear for investors accustomed
to making snap trades when the data are released. The
usual bed is on the change in jobs and unemployment
compared with expectations and the last release. But the last
payrolls data we have is from September and we'll only
get half of the October release. The household survey with
unemployment figures will be missing because the data couldn't be collected.

(06:02):
Add to that uncertainty about government employment after DOGE firings
and the government shutdown. That'll make analyzing the combined two
month report difficult. Still, it will be data and it
will get a lot of attention on Wall Street, although
the Fed will likely put much more weight on this
month's numbers. Reported on January ninth, Michael McKee, Bloomberg Radio.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
And that is news when you want it with Bloomberg News. Now,
I'm Doug Chrisner, and this is Bloomberg
