Speaker 1 (00:01):
News when you wanted with Bloomberg News. Now, I'm Doug Krisner.
The Supreme Court is allowing Texas to use its GOP
drawn voting map for next year's elections. Now, this decision
will put on hold a lower court ruling that had
blocked the map. The justices acted on an emergency request
from Texas for quick action because qualifying in new districts

(00:21):
has already begun. Here is Bloomberg's greg Store.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Normally, in these racial gerrymandering cases, courts require somebody who's
challenging a map to produce an alternative map that would
have accomplished the state's goals, in this case, drawing more
Republican friendly seats without using race. So much so, the
lower court did not require that in this case, and

(00:46):
the Supreme Court said that was a problem. So those
were preliminary decisions by the Supreme Court, but they strongly
suggest that they think the lower court got it wrong.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
That is Bloomberg's Greg's Store. Now. Today's Supreme Court decision
does not dictate whether the map can be used beyond
twenty twenty six. The Department of Justice has failed to
secure a new indictment against New York Attorney General Letitia
James on charges of mortgage fraud. Just weeks ago, a
federal judge dismissed an earlier case against James, saying the

(01:15):
US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Lindsay Halligan,
had been improperly appointed. While the Justice Department could try
to seek another indictment of James for a third time,
top military officials gave a classified briefing today to senior
members of Congress on an attack of a boat suspected
of carrying drugs. They were shown video footage of a

(01:37):
follow up strike that's become the center of a debate
over the Pentagon's lethal mission. Afterwards, lawmakers from both parties
expressed concerns. Some called for the release of complete and
unedited footage of this second strike. Here is Connecticut Democratic
Congressman Jim Hmes.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
What I saw in that room was one of the
most troubling things I've seen in my time in public service.
You have two individuals in clear distress, without any means
of locomotion, with a destroyed vessel, who were killed by
the United States.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
Jim Himes there, he is Democratic Congressman from Connecticut. Now
the White House has insisted the strikes were the lawful
use of force. A suspect has been arrested for planting
pipe bombs near the Republican and Democratic National Party headquarters
in Washington, d C. On January fifth, twenty twenty one.
Brian Cole Junior was charged with transporting and explosive device

(02:36):
and attempting malicious destruction by means of explosive materials. This
marks a breakthrough in a case that has stymied investigators
for nearly five years. Here is Attorney General Pambondi.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
Let me be clear. There was no new tip, there
was no new witness, just good diligent police work and
prosecratorial work.

Speaker 1 (02:56):
Attorney General Pambondi now Cole faces a minimum sentence of
five years in prison and a maximum of twenty years
for the destruction charge. Bondie says the investigation is ongoing
and there could be more charges to come. Warner Brothers
Discovery has begun exclusive deal talks with Netflix. We are
told the two companies could announce a deal as soon

(03:17):
as in the coming days, assuming talks don't fall apart.
Netflix is offering a five billion dollar breakup fee if
regulators do not approve this deal. Netflix wants Warner's film
and TV studios, as well as the HBO Max streaming service.
The other bidders included Paramounts, Guidance, and Comcast, and earlier today,
Paramount accused Warner of failing to conduct a fair process

(03:41):
and failing to act in the best interest of Warner shareholders.
Meta Platforms is expected to make cuts to its Reality
Labs unit. This unit was charged with building the so
called metaverse. Mediceo Mark Zuckerberg once framed the metaverse as
the future of the company. Well, now we are told
executives are considered ring budget cuts next year of as

(04:02):
much as thirty percent for Reality Labs. Here is Bloomberg's
Kurt Wagner.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
For a company that has, you know, touted the metaverse,
says the future of this business, right. I mean they
literally changed the name from Facebook Ink to Meta Platforms Inc.
A few years ago. It's a notable decision that they
are pulling back. You know, they're not getting rid of
the metaverse stuff, but they are pulling back in a
meaningful way.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
That is Bloomberg's Kurt Wagner. Now, the cuts will most
likely include layoffs as early as January, although a final
decision has not yet been made. We moved to Earning's news.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise gave an outlook for sales in the
current quarter below estimates. This suggests the company is not
meeting high expectations for the sales of its AI servers.

(04:46):
We got reaction from Patrick moorehead founder and CEO at
More Insights and Strategy.

Speaker 5 (04:52):
The HPE trade, the AI trade, particularly with these largest customers,
these largest buildouts with neok clouds, these giant sovereign class
very lumpy business and ultimately I do believe that the
math will work for HPE, and quite frankly it has.
And if I look across the line of everybody who

(05:13):
plays in here, typically the margins are a little bit lower,
directly related to the size of the deal.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
Patrick moorehead there from More Insights and Strategy. Shares in
HPE are down by more than seven percent in late
US trading. And that is news when you want it
with Bloomberg News. Now, I'm Doug Chrisner, and this is
Bloomberg
