Speaker 1 (00:01):
News when you wanted with Bloomberg News. Now, I'm Doug Krisner.
We begin in Japan. The country has issued a tsunami
warning after a powerful earthquake off the eastern coast of Russia.
It occurred Wednesday morning local time. Now. According to the
US Geological Survey, this magnitude eight point eight quake struck
off the coast of the Komchatsky Peninsula. Here is Bloomberg's

(00:22):
John Herskowitz and Tokyo.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
What is forecast for Japan or what the Medeological Agency
has warned of is of a tsunami of up to
three meters, and the warning stretches for large parts of
Japan's Pacific coast from Hokkaido through most of Honshu. This
is an area that includes the Tokyo metropolitan area the
Osaka metropolitan area.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
That is Bloomberg's John Hirskowitz. Now, tsunami warnings have been
issued for Hawaii and parts of Alaska, and a tsunami
watch is in from the California Mexico border to the
Chicknik Bay in Alaska. That's according to the US National
Weather Service's tsunami Warning system. By the way, the US
territory of Guam is also under a tsunami watch. We

(01:07):
go to trade next. Talks between the US and China
will continue as the two sides work to extend a
tear of truce it's set to expire August twelfth. Here
is US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant speaking after meetings earlier
in Stockholm.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
We had great momentum going into the meeting thanks to
the President's trade deals. I think that the Chinese were
surprised by the magnitude of the Japan deal, by the
magnitude and the terms of the European deal. I believe
that they were in more of a moved for a

(01:42):
wide ranging discussion.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
That is US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant there. Interestingly, Beijing's
negotiators suggested a ninety day extension is in place, but
Besson said they may have spoken too soon. Both sides,
by the way, are still addressing export controls, rare earths,
and fentanyl to tariffs. President Trump said he would give
Russia ten more days from today to reach a truce

(02:05):
with Ukraine. Trump announced a new deadline as a way
of pressuring Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war,
and Trump threatened potential economic penalties on Moscow if it
did not act. We got reaction from Evelyn Farkas, executive
director of the McCain Institute.

Speaker 4 (02:22):
He hasn't shown any signs of taking him seriously, or
at least he's not afraid of any consequences, so he's
continued and in fact ramped up his attacks on the
Ukrainian civilians. I will say, however, that it sounds like
President Trump is saying, I'm giving you one last chance.
So the number of days is probably not the issue.
It's the fact that he's saying, I'm losing patients.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
Evelyn Farcas, there of the McCain Institute. Separately, a Russian
strike on a Ukrainian prison and a medical facility overnight
killed at least twenty seven people. Yesterday's mass shooting at
three forty five Park Avenue in Midtown man and left
four people and the gunman dead. The victims include a
Blackstone executive as well as a New York City police officer.

(03:07):
Now two senior law enforcement officials said the suspect was
targeting the NFL's office in that same building, but he
ended up on a floor occupied by the building's owner,
roudent management by mistake here is New York City Mayor
Eric Adams.

Speaker 5 (03:22):
It is time to turn the corner of a.

Speaker 6 (03:25):
Society where automatic weapons are as easy to get as
a cell phone.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
That was New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Meantime, questions
have been raised about overall building security. Separately, investigators from
the New York Police Department traveled to Las Vegas to
search the apartment of Shane Tamura. He is the twenty
seven year old man who fatally shot four people and
wounded another inside three P forty five Park Avenue before

(03:53):
killing himself, and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tish said investigators are
planning to question a man who supplied parts for a
gun used in the shooting. We go to after the
Bell earnings news. Next, Starbucks results for the latest quarter
were weaker than expected. Comm sales were down two percent,
while earnings came in at fifty cents per share, fifteen

(04:15):
cents below forecast. We got reaction from Abby Roach, senior
portfolio analyst at all Spring Global Investments.

Speaker 6 (04:22):
We think the number of different initiatives that that they're
working through, we're encouraged that they are really focused on
bringing back that the brand strength in that coffee house culture,
and we think it's certainly a tall order this turnaround,
and it's taking longer than I think many would have
initially expected, but we think they're doing a lot of
the right things.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
All Spring's Abby Roach, speaking earlier to Bloomberg. Now, on
the bright side, Starbucks said same store sales in China
rose two percent. This is the first gain in China
since the end of twenty twenty three, and it's tied
to cutting prices for some tea based products. Starbucks CEO
Brian Nichols said the company is cutting store construction cost
and he is promising a wave of innovation in twenty

(05:03):
twenty six. Shares in Starbucks were up by more than
three percent in late US trading. We also heard from Visa.
The company reported profit for the latest quarter above Wall
Street estimates. More from Bloomberg's Charlie Pellett.

Speaker 5 (05:16):
The world's biggest payments network reported double digit gains in
cross border purchases and process transactions. Revenue for the quarter
surpassed Wall Street expectations, climbing fourteen percent to a record
ten point two billion dollars. Visa's earnings outlook for the
full fiscal year remained unchanged, with the company saying it

(05:38):
still expects earnings per share to increase by a percentage
in the low teens and revenue to grow by load
double digits. In New York, Charlie Pellett Bloomberg Radio.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
And that is news when you want it with Bloomberg News. Now,
I'm Doug Chrisner, and this is Bloomberg New
