Speaker 1 (00:01):
News when you wanted with Bloomberg News. Now, I'm Doug Prisner.
A federal judge is blocking President Trump from firing FED
Governor Lisa Cook, as her lawsuit challenging this termination plays out.
The judge rule the president did not likely have cause back.
On August twenty fifth, Trump said he was firing Cook
because of suggestions she had committed mortgage fraud in connection
(00:23):
with documents she signed for two residential properties, one in Georgia,
another in Michigan. We go to the Middle East next,
where tensions spiked after Israel struck Hamas leadership in the
capital of cutter. This move was condemned by key Gulf states.
An analyst are saying the strike could end normalization efforts
with Israel and trigger wider instability at a time when
(00:46):
the US is working to broke or a cease fire
in Gaza. Speaking outside a restaurant in Washington, d C,
President Trump told reporters he was not given advanced notice
of the Israeli strike.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
I was very unhappy about it.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Happy about every aspect, and we got to get the
hostages back, but I was very unhappy about the way
that went down. That was President Trump speaking there He
went on to say that he spoke with both Israeli
Prime Minister Benjamin Neknyahu as well as the leaders of Cutter,
and Trump assured the Qataris that such an attack would
not happen again. Cutter is a critical US partner in
(01:22):
the region, and it's been a key mediator in Israeli Hamas'
hostage negotiations. Staying in Washington, the Trump administration signature trade
policy is now heading to the Supreme Court. Today, the
justices agreed to fast track a case reviewing the legality
of these tariffs that affect trillions of dollars in commerce. Now.
A lower court has already ruled that President Trump exceeded
(01:45):
his power under a nineteen seventy seven law by unilaterally
raising those import duties. Here is Bloomberg's Laura Davison.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
It's good have massive implications. If the Supreme Courts decides
they are not legal, then there is the big question
of what happens to all the tariffs that have been
paid over the past several months. These are billions of dollars,
and getting that back to each company could be a
monumental task.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
That was Bloomberg's Laura Davison. By the way, those tariffs
will remain in place, at least for now. Separately, today,
President Trump said he is prepared to join the European
Union in imposing sweeping new tariffs on both India and China. Now,
we are told Trump made the request when he was
called into a meeting with senior US and EU officials
in Washington.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
Now.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
The aim here would be to push Russian President Vladimir
Putin to the negotiating table with regard to Ukraine, but
only if EU nations do so as well. Now. At
the same time, US and EU officials discussed other potential
measures that could include further sanctions on Russia's shadow fleet
of oil tankers and restrictions on Russian banks, as well
(02:49):
as Russia's financial sector and its major oil companies. President
Trump called the birthday note he allegedly sent to Jeffrey
Epstein a dead issue. He made the comment today in
an interview with NBC News, and his remarks come a
day after House Democrats released a copy of the letter
along with other documents. Meantime, White House Press Secretary Caroline
(03:10):
Levitt maintained that the image of the letter released by
House Democrats is fabricated claiming Trump did not sign it.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
The President did not write that letter, He did not
sign those documents. He maintains that position, and that position
will be argued in court by his lawyers. The President
is very confident he is going to win this case.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt, speaking there. The Trump
administration has announced plans to crack down on pharmaceutical advertising
on television and social media platforms. The administration is planning
to enforce existing rules about misleading ads. The FDA will
send csend assist and warning letters to companies related to
(03:48):
pharmaceutical advertising. The new regulations may require broadcast ads to
be longer to ensure they disclose the full risk profiles
of these medications. The Justice Department is charged demand with
a fatal stabbing of a Ukrainian refugee on a North
Carolina commuter train last month. To Carlos Brown Junior faces
a federal charge of causing death on a mass transportation system.
(04:13):
Now this charge carries a sentence of up to life
in prison or even the death penalty. Prosecutors in North
Carolina also charged Brown with first degree murder. Here is
Russ Ferguson us Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.
Speaker 4 (04:26):
We're going to supplement those state charges with federal charges.
These federal charges will go alongside the murder case and
state court, and we hope that they will insure justice
for Erna, for her family, and for the whole Charlotte community.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
That was Russ Ferguson, US Attorney for the Western District
of North Carolina. Now, as this case proceeds, there are
growing questions about why Brown was on the street despite
fourteen prior criminal arrest. And that is news when you
want it with Bloomberg News. Now, I'm Doug Prisner, and
this is Bloomberg
