couldn't stop it because my friend spilled a drink all

and it's like the most embarrassing thing. They throw me

in the garbage and then the guy takes out not
even like three like nights, he crumpled three hundred dollar
bills and throws them. So they throw them at me
on the ground. I'm black, Did you dude to deserve that?
I was probably being an idiot.

It was probably just so drunk, like spilling stuff, like
being an idiot. So I'm out there and I remember
like standing up and like looking at my friends and

I was like, but I'm building a studio in LA.
You got to just build the studio and I'll be
out in like a few months. And then he was

And then like eventually I'm like he's in college and
I'm like, yo, we're going on tour with this person.

me he makes music, and then one day he like

and he's like, okay, cool. We're in the session. Literally

fifteen minutes into the session. We're in a room like
this small, and we're like me in the Weekend, are
like going back and forth and we're like singing stuff,
we're playing beats, and all of a sudden, he takes
his phone out to try to take like a sneak
no and it goes like it goes and it flashes,
and he literally Blake doesn't know what to do, so
he goes like this, He goes and he throws his

phone and just like leaves the room and just like
doesn't know what to do. Like the weekend doesn't notice,
and it's like all good, but he was so embarrassed
he left the room and did not come back for
the rest of the session.

got to New York, I was living in Virginia at
the time I drove up. When I got to New York,
I didn't drive. Me and my friends, which dude, we
would do the craziest things. I didn't have anywhere to stay,
so we would go. I would go up for meetings.

These are yeah, this is the bomb shit. I would
go up for meetings every single weekend. And I would
go on a Friday, and I would skip some of
school so I could get there in time for like
the last meeting. And after that, we didn't have anywhere
to stay. We didn't have any money, So me and
all my friends we would sleep in the McDonald's in
Times Square and we would take turns sleeping, and like

one person would stay awake and then one person would sleep. Yeah,
and we used to just like we to dude, we
used to sleep. We used to sleep in Hoboken Station
because like the cops wouldn't come there, and like we
would all we'd sleep in a car and like one
person would stay awake and we would do all the
ship and it was me and like a few of
my friends, and sometimes like you'd go, I'd go like

all the way there and and like the meeting, they'd
be like, ah, sorry, can't make it like and I'd
be like, fuck, I drove all the way here.

So we'd have to like try to figure out something
we could do.

But basically one of the times, I like go in
with Disco Deep and I get there and I'm like, dude,
I don't want studio time.

you can book my studio for the two days you

have a job, you can be my intern. And I said, yeah,
of course I can book the studio. It was like no, dude,
it was like six hundred dollars a day, so I
and we didn't have money. I called every person I
know and I was like, please, I'll pay you back.
I'll do anything, like and I had. I got it
booked somehow. I booked the studio the whole time, and

few extra hours, and I put in two hundred of
my own dollars and I had no money. Yeah, like
and he was like, all right, you did it. He
was like, I'll see you next week.

I would travel back and forth every weekend.

some important sessions coming through. It was like t I
was there first and then afterwards it was it was
it was spank rock and he was like, I got
this guy coming in. He was like, whatever he wants.

You're his studio assistant, you're his bitch, you do whatever
he wants. I was like, okay, So like it's in
Williamsburg the studio and it's like two thousand and six
and he walks in and he's like, oh, I'm kind
of hungry, and he was like, can you order me
this thing? So I ordered him this thing from this
place called any Time. It's not even there anymore. So
like I'm in the session and I like bring him

his food and he's like, hey, what do you think
about this? And he like wraps a thing to me,
this bankrack, and I'm like, oh man, that's so good.
And then like I'm working with him the next day.
The next day, same thing, bring him in his food
and he's like he's like, hey, he's like what rhymes
with like telephone or something. And I was like, oh, maybe,
well maybe telephone. I was like, beellphone. I was like telephone, telephone.

Telephone is such a hard one. So so I.

Like he like takes the line and then we start
like talking and like developing this like report.

But he was new too. He was like he was cool.

He was like very cool, and it was like and
I didn't care.

I only cared about cool shit because I was like
living in Williamsburg at the time, and it's like, you know,
this was like before Santi was even a thing, like
we put her on her first, like her first collaboration
was with us, and I remember like one night they
were like, Yo, we're gonna go back to the studio.
I need you to prepare the studio. So I took
the train, and the way that it worked back then

is like from where I lived, I had to go
all the way in the city, then all the way
back to brook because I lived in Brooklyn too. There
was no like connector because the L train used to
like not connect to anything. So like I like went
all the way in the city, all the way to
his thing, and then he was like, actually, I need
you to bring this demo CD to me. He's like,
I'm actually gonna be with Diddy, and I was like fuck.
So I had to go all the way back then

all the way there and he's like and then he
was like, we left, We're at the next place. You
got to meet us in the next place. So I'm like,

and I'll just like eat less the next day.

He's like, you can't come in the room. And I'm like,
there's this little.

There's this little window and I just can look in
the studio and I see everyone in there, like and.

I'm like sitting outside.

And then I remember the next day I saw he
was the best, but he was but he was he
was trouble. And the next day I came in and
I remember he was like, all right, play me your
beats because I think he felt bad. He was like
playing your beats and like playing my beats and he
literally takes all the files and deletes them at least
my whole hard drive and he's like these suck and.

He was like start again as a monster. And he
goes start again, Oh my god.

And then like and then another time another time he
took my hard drive and he threw it out the window,
and and and and and I was like crushed all
these because Psycho, I was crushed. And he would be
like but he would always tell me something. He'd be like, Okay,
this is why I deleted it all him. He was like,
I want you to watch me make a bet. And
I was like studying him because I was obsessed with

this guy was so far ahead of his time, and
he was so good at dealing with artists and so
good at it.

He actually I learned everything.

I would never be who I am without knowing what
he did. Like really, if he was around for like
a little bit longer, he would have been like one
of the biggest producers. He was just like suicide. He
was he was he was like, was too far ahead

it was. It was really like karate kidship, but he
would like torture me like it was dude.

a lot of the people that I work with today
are people that I met through those times. So it's
like so it's like I don't know if this is
supposed to be one of those things, but it's like
all the shit you're taking and all the stuff you're

doing to build up your career and you think it's
not worth it, like that stuff comes back, like I'm
working with these people. I'm working with people I literally
met seventeen years ago, right seventeen eighteen years ago, and
I went through some shit and it's like, dude, I
went through so much much shit, you know how many times,
like I didn't get credit, Like I like made a

One time I had a number one song stolen from

like went in I went into the manager of that
person's thing office and I was like and I was like,
they stole my song, and he was like, no, they didn't.
And then I opened up a laptop and I played
my version with a date stamp that was like before
the one they created. And then I remember like the

manager was like hold on. He like closed the door
and he was like, let's just talk about this. And
then and then I remember I called the person who
stole it from me and I was like, hey man,
you you stole that thing like that was mine. I
did that like I did that, and he said, what
are you gonna do about it? And then he was
like he was like, he goes, I'll bury you in

legal fees. He goes, you don't have any money to
fight this. He goes, just just take this one. Just
just just like gave me like a virtual pad on
the back. He was like, you just take this one,
You'll get the next one. Like, oh my god, do
you know how many Do you know how many times?

Yeah, but like but but all of those moments, like
that's why I like when I sign kids like it
makes it gives me like so much pleasure to like
to like give these guys like fair deals and like

No, no, but to like watch these dudes, Like I
have so many people that I signed that I watch them, like, dude,

know what to do. I lost my mind. I lost

and I and I had to see. I had to see,
Like I saw a therapist like three times a week,
and he like built me back and then like and
then I came back like better than ever.

Like it was all too much. There was too much pressure,
too much, drivers much money, too much. Like I just
like didn't I didn't understand, Like I wasn't built like that.

Yeah, I didn't know song stealing was so yeah, it
goes right all that shit that's fucked up. Yeah, And
like because like joke thievery and comedy is so taboo
and all comics will snitch on you if you steal
a joke, Like comics are looking out for each other

Never, no, never, I have like one type of comedy.
My comedic creative choices are so idiosyncratic. And specific if
I even if I stole a joke, it wouldn't work.
I have like one I sing one song, and I
singing it well like there's only there's only one tempo,

one speed, one volume. You know, I only can do
one thing. So and even if like I had a
joke that was like similar to somebody else's joke, and
like it was written from my it was purely written
for it never went on TV or anything, but just
somebody like suggested like, oh no, Lucy kas a joke
like that. I never did it. Yeah, and I never

put it on Netflix. I never went on TV. Just
I like I did it at the Laugh Factory and
like they would put comics on their website. Sometimes somebody
was like in the comments, was like, that reminds me
of this joke, and I was like, just the fact
that it reminds you of that joke, it's gone. It's
out of the repertoire.

Speaker 4 (33:58):
Yeah, no, it's just like it's like but getting crushed
is like part of it.

Speaker 3 (34:04):
It's like it's all it's all like I don't.

Speaker 2 (34:06):
Know, I just don't. I've known you for a while,
I didn't know any of that shit happened. It's crazy.

Oh my god, I have so many where I'm just
like crushed.

Like the people that are successful are the people are
just willing to put up with all that crushing and
they don't get discouraged enough to quit. Dude, you just

We would we would stay in the studio for like
a week at a time. I would fall asleep. I
remember I was I was falling asleep at the computer
and and and like and like they were throwing it
at me and they were like, dude, wake up. They're like,
we gotta keep going. And I was like I was like, like, dude,
one time I had to go to the hospital. I

was so sick and exhausted.

Speaker 3 (34:51):
And exhaustion like the medical term, you know.

Speaker 4 (34:54):
I had actual I had like actual fatigue. And they had, dude,
they had to. Like the people I was working with,
they had me on a on like a schedule and
like a thing that would ring, and it would be
like you gotta go to bed now, Benny, like to
get me like back to like life, like dude, we
were working like I was working like like sixty hours straight.

But like that shit like makes you.

That ship made totally, totally absolutely. I was so broke
when I started doing comedy, I was homeless. I would
sleep in the park. There's this little park called Saint
Barton's Park. I would ask I go on stage at
open mics, do my set, try to make everybody laugh,
and then ask audience members if I could sleep over
their house? Did they say yeah? Sometimes I would. I
would add like tooth brushes all over the city. I

(35:39):
would like crash at different people's houses. I would sleep
outside crazy. I would eat like one dollar microwave Indian
food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner because there was the
cheapest thing in the order. When this is like this
is like just just.

Speaker 3 (35:56):
After you're just like taking it off.

Speaker 2 (35:59):
I had like patch work.

Speaker 3 (36:02):
Yeah no, dude, it's.

Speaker 4 (36:04):
Like, dude, we're bombing, like like everyone's bombing.

I've had it crush me before? Does it when I
go up? I bombed on stage the other night doing
stand up, not last night, but last week, and it
used to crush me. And now I just look at
my jokes like totally objectively. I'll just be like all right,
I'm gonna do this, this, this, this. And I went
up on stage and I had my notes with me

and I was just like, but da da da dah.
I did one joke it went well. Then I was like, great,
that joke works. And then I was like blah blahuh
crickets And I was like that joke mads work, and
then I was like, but da da da, Okay, that
joke still got some fucking gas in it. Now it's
like just objective, like I don't take it personally. I'm
just like uh huhh. And then I'll go back and
I'll listen to the voice memo and I'll be like, oh, yeah,
I stuttered over that word, and I was like, Oh,

that's too harsh for the audience's ears. I should reorder that.
I just look at it completely objectively.

What if you make like a movie and it just bombed,
soul crushing show soul crushing.

Speaker 2 (37:35):
I've only made one movie and it did well, but
it didn't make any money. So I did it? Did
it bombed and did well simultaneously?

Do you read like reviews?

Speaker 4 (37:42):
Like if somebody said, like a bad review about the
Eric Andre Show, are you crushed?

Speaker 2 (37:46):
What we did for Netflix? We took all the bad
reviews and we put it as part of the marketing.
So it's like, this movie's disgusting New York Times. Yeah,
this movie's fucking written by children New York But whatever,
you know what I mean? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Sometimes
I'll tell my publicists like, don't send me the bad reviews.
I'm not I'm not in.

started protecting myself against that stuff early on. It depends.
It depends like when the when something first comes out,
that's when you're the most sensitive. And then with time
you can stomach the bad reviews. But some of the
bad reviews are good for you. You want to look
at like all the negative feedback and see where there's
commonalities and take that as a note, be like, you

know what, we shouldn't do a scene like that again. Yeah,
so it's not all about it's not all a bit.
The best. The best was the New York Times reviewer
rips us a new asshole. That's tough because the Times
you want the Times for it's good for bad trip.
Then the New York Times Sunday section came back for
like whatever lifestyle or whatever and gave us like the

best review. Ever, so it was like, oh, there's inner
New York Times turmoil. And it was like such a
victory because it's like the Sunday section they don't need
to report on. It wasn't like a movie reviewer. It
was like just like lifestyle and whatever the fuck and
he gave us a fucking awesome review and it was
such a fucking victory.

It was like, hell, yes, yet, like.

The New York Times, I don't even want that shit.

controlling the entire thing. And I have like a real
computer that's like it's like plugg dan and stuff. And

this guy is like playing a guitar. He's so fucked up,
and he's like and he's like and then knocks out
my plug and the computer shuts out, and they're like
just like because there's no track. And then I'm like
fuck and it's like we're completely empty. And then I
go to plug it back in and we're at like

a vestival and it literally when the computer turns on.

It was like it was.

So sick when it happened, but it was like, but yeah,
it's like three oh three at the time, it was
at Warped tour headline.

getting like crushed every day. Every his crush every day
