Speaker 1 (00:00):
Coming up on this edition of Celtics Weekly, we recap
a noteworthy four game road trips, highlight the top plays
from a big week, and welcome to Celtics staff for
weekends late at Home all that more starting now.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Welcome into Celtics Weekly, the show where we catch you
up on everything eighteen Banner World Champ, Boston Celtics in
the Domico scene. Today we have Chris Forsberg of NBC
Sports Boston.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
How are you feeling?
Speaker 4 (00:38):
Cross? So I was gonna say I have big shoes
to fill, but it's just a Miko. So I'm feeling.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
Okay, get like size sixes.
Speaker 4 (00:44):
Yeah, I wasn't gonna go there, but yeah, I mean.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
It is so freezing cold outside around here in Boston.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
I got my big snow boots on.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
But the Celtics are blazing hot because they're coming off
a three to one road trip.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Let's get right in two Weekly Rewind.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
This is where we look over the week that was
since our last Celtics Weekly show. And of course we
got to start right up with last night Boston against Denver.
No nikolea Jokic, but a nice performance for Boston. Got
a little tight in the third quarter, Jason Tatum and
Christoph Orzingis showing up big time.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
This is the most normal KP has look since coming back.
I loved it. First double double of the season. He
was everywhere. Love that they brought the right energy coming
off that OKC loss.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Let's go right back to the start of this trip, though.
They got off on the right foot against Minnesota, another
close game. Jason Tatum with thirty three points and Derek
White added twenty six.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Would you think of this matchup?
Speaker 4 (01:41):
All?
Speaker 5 (01:41):
Right?
Speaker 4 (01:41):
So look Tatum I think was fifty points plus rebounds
plus a SITH. He was all over this, an MVP
caliber performance. I love the way he set the tone
and carried this team in Minnesota.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
This second game of the road trip against Houston. As
we're moving on, this was the most impressive to me
because this could have been somewhat of a schedule of
loss against one of the best offensive teams in the league,
but the Celtics came out with their most commanding performance
without Jaylen Brown.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
You nailed this right, Like you look at the schedule,
the long trip, coming off an emotional game, second night
of a back to back, still a little bit shorthanded,
and yet the Celtics brought the necessary energy and found
a way to get that w.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Okay, it was a long road trip.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
The third game against OKC started out really well in
the first half. What did you see from this team
in the second half where the challenges came with a gauntlet.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Of a trip.
Speaker 4 (02:29):
I turned the game off at halftime, so it was
all good. I saw sixty five points Day recruised. I
don't think there's anything bad to talk about here. Showed that,
like if this was an NBA Finals preview, Celtics show
they could hang with this team.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Okay, Well, I think we can move on from Oklahoma
City because, as I said, three to one road trip,
that's a great result for the Celtics and you'll see
those OKC thunder again on March twelfth. They'll have chet
Holmgren most likely back at that point. Who knows what
these teams will be after the All Star break.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
And who they develop into.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
But to get that little second half out of the
taste of our mouse, let's move on two Plays of
the week, because this is where we highlight the very
best of the Celtics and we're gonna get started at
number ten. What else the best perimeter defender in the league.
Drew Holliday taking it off over to Jalen Brown for
a nice finish at the ground.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
I liked it.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
You know, he had kadomy at Brown, but he calmly
picked the best option out there. Just dumps it off
knife and calm with what Drew does, creates on the
defensive side and make it at all.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Number nine j T at the top of the key.
I call this situational awareness. Okay, just sinking a three
right there.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
He snatched those ankles, stepped back and calmly. Now you
know the rule is this. This guy goes down and you
got to make the show. Absolutely took care of both.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Number eight is JT again, this time against Minnesota. He
looks like he's sending something up here or saying I'm
going to go left, but nope, he's just sending.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
Up his own shot. Again.
Speaker 4 (03:53):
Did you hear a guy Drew Cotter's call, He's like
looking for a little barbecue chicken. No, maybe a little
s car go the defensive player of the year on
the other side, and Tatum roasted them.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Number seven starts with a Derek White rebound. This is
like next level three man week, Like it did in
second grade here to Forzingis Stone.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
I love this because again Tatum in transition notes, you
got KP running with them, perfectly throwing love. KP goes
up and finish. Although my heart always flutters when KP
Flims were there.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
One more luck again, manwe did you do that? Drovers? Interesting?
I mean just hits. Our kids go to the next girl.
Speaker 4 (04:28):
They just moved that basketball.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Number six Jason Tatum. Again, he's getting a lot of
love on this.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
That's in the theme.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
I'm pretty sure he just crossed over the entire state.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Of Minnesota, and that's a big state.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Chris.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
He went through like nine lakes on that trek through
Minnesota and threw down yet again with Rudy Goberen.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
Number five Derek White getting a little love here, best
shot blocking guard in the league, best shot blocking guard
in the league against host.
Speaker 4 (04:54):
Hold on, how is this not Number one? He beats
Dylan Brooks, makes him think he's going to get to
the hoop, and then soon just like Derek watse Well.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
The number four again starts with another defensive replace play
here to Jay's double j effort and then look at
the pretty possession over here on the other end. You
get everybody involved on the court.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
Here, defense creates the offense. I love this. They were
Tatum sticking with the play and I don't know they
should have known he was patrolling and then to hustle
back and be ready to talk up the lob. Everybody
making moves working fast.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Number three. Have you had enough Jason Tatum?
Speaker 3 (05:27):
No? Because here he is orchestrating again.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
But this time he finds the big guy, Luke Cornett
down low.
Speaker 4 (05:32):
Oh. I like that. We saved Luke for the for
the top of this thing.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
Let Well always gets in here.
Speaker 4 (05:37):
He was ready in the dunker spot and what did
he do? Finishes the dunk? Oh Man courting you a.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Little poster there from Luke Cornette. Number two, Peyton Pritchard
starting out on d Gotta love the effort that guy
always puts in. But this is something we've missed. Christop's
porzingis extension. Look at that block that rim protection.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
DeAndre Jordan was trying to turn back the clock and
zinc Is just up there and just scented the backwards.
Amazing play. Like just again, remember how good DeAndre Jordan
was a dunk in the basketball, still could get up.
But poor Zinka said, No, number.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
One, we cheated here a little bit.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
This is a little bit of a two for one
because you had to start with this ridiculous play that
Derek White creates for himself at the top of the
key at the very end of the Minnesota game, and
then what do you get a little.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
Corner office bank shot from Derek Why?
Speaker 4 (06:25):
Okay, first off, how does Derek even keep his feet
in bounds on this? Like most guys in the NBA,
of their feet are too big. He has to, like
kippy toe bank was open, find a way to get
it done.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
So all in all, terrific road trip for the Celtics.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
As we said, they were crossing over many great planes,
some kind of great plane road trip back and forth.
I can't even call it a West coast swing.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
We got you caught up with everything basketball.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
I think it's an excellent time to head over to
the Big Board check in with Melissa Valdez on what
the fans are saying on social media. With our social thing,
Social Snapshot is where we check in with all all
you weirdos on the internet, You Celtics fans, you know
you're weird.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
We're here with ERNA hosts hello, corspun, but.
Speaker 6 (07:08):
We all does totally not weird. But we love our
fans and they're definitely talking out there, you guys. So
let's check out what social media has been up to
in today's social snapshots. All right, now, we've got here
from at Celtics Lab. We all know who these two
young men are, some future Celtics basketball players, Ian Horford
and Duce Tatum. We also got over here at Juan
(07:30):
josev rod rd Ian Horford versus Duce Tatum hashtag NBA,
hashtag Celtics. We all know that the Boston Celtics and
the Gardens super family oriented. We always see a lot
of Celtics family running around and we love to see
these two just chopping it up at free warm up.
You know, they were hooping on the court, just having
a blast.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
It's their playground, you guys.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
So let's see Al Horford and Jason Tatum can win
let's combine five six championships and then pass the reins
right to these guys who will have all that experience
being on the court and be ready to hit the
ground runn So two thousand and.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
Thirty eight or so, I'm not good at math, don't
you know.
Speaker 6 (08:05):
What you looking forward to that because they're certainly they're
already training.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
You know they got they got some skills.
Speaker 6 (08:10):
Let's check out the next one.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
All right, well we all know about this one.
Speaker 6 (08:14):
At Celtics muse, Jason Tatum asked Joe's Missoula before the
game to be assigned to guard Anthony Edwards, and Mozoula
definitely confirmed that. If you saw the Celtics Netflix the
Netflix starting five, Anthony Edwards was talking a little trash,
stay in locked them up two times, talk about best
player in the league. Y'all tripping, But we all know
what happened in the last Minnesota versus Celtics game in
(08:38):
this last road trip, Jason Tatum definitely dropped thirty three
points on Anthony Edwards and he only had fifteen points.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
Who's tripping now? I will also point out that on
the last play when Anthony Edwards had a chance to
maybe send this game to overtime, you know who is
the defendant proximity Jason Tatum sweazing right?
Speaker 6 (08:55):
But so what do you have to say now? Ant,
Let's take a look at the next one. Oh, oh
my god, how can we forget the best year ever?
Twenty twenty four at Still Greeny twenty twenty four was
a dream of we won the NBA twenty two four
World NBA Championship. Take a look here at the guys
at the ring ceremony, the two days Tatum and Jaylen
(09:17):
Brown over here backstage with the trophy out or for
just living in the moment, the parade, the ring ceremony.
It was just such an incredible year.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
How can we forget it?
Speaker 6 (09:27):
And I'm ready to run this back this.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Year, Melissa. Can you see who is that Tatum holding
up the trophy there? Because it's like the way the
light is hitting it. I know it's like eight it
actually because it's got like a symbom.
Speaker 6 (09:39):
Heaven said or something.
Speaker 4 (09:41):
It was such an incredible moment, everything the light touches.
I thought for sure this was photoshopped. I just want
to believe that it's one hundred percent real because it's
so amazing to see the sun a bouncing three and it.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
Was a beautiful time. How can we forget it? Let's
do it again this year? Absolutely, Melissa.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
If folks want to send you some submissions, maybe some
of their own creations on social media, where can make it?
That's right.
Speaker 6 (10:03):
You guys can find me on AX or on Instagram
at miss Mellie Valdez. Why won't know what you guys
are talking about, so tag me and you might be
featured in the next segment.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
You can also find us in the comments section.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
That's right, say something there that you want to show
on Celtics Weekly next week, or maybe say something about
Chris Forsberg.
Speaker 3 (10:20):
We got to hit quick commercial we come back. We'll
hear from Joe Missoula after the Denver game. Welcome back
(10:56):
time now for small bites.
Speaker 2 (10:58):
It's the next size segment that packs the main course
punch and guys where once again hearing from coach Joe
Mizzula after last night's very late game against Denver. So
nobody's gonna guilt you if you didn't stay up to
hear this, but he had some compelling quotes that we
want to play for you about Christops porzingis getting right,
getting back in rhythm.
Speaker 4 (11:18):
What kind of lifted Chris office provide, especially with a side.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
I guess this T and L is a.
Speaker 4 (11:22):
Little bit smaller.
Speaker 5 (11:23):
Yeah, I mean I thought he was big time sing
at both ends of the floor. I thought that was
you know, with for this season, you know, for the
way the Smalls are going on him. I thought it
was the most physical that you know, he was, and
I thought that was the most intentional we were about,
you know, not only getting him the ball, but getting
into the paint versus smaller matchups, and so I'm just
(11:45):
going to continue to work through those. Even at the
end they changed some matchups. We're able to recognize that.
But I thought his presence at the beginning of the
game and you know at the end of the game,
we're big for us.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
He's voiced to us, he's been frustrated about this stopping
starts to this season for you starting to see him kind.
Speaker 5 (11:59):
For him, Yes, that's tough. I mean he can't control it,
you know, so it's not on him. But you know
he's slowly getting back into a rhythm, you know, but
you just got to continue to work at it. I
thought offensively he was tremendous. I thought defensively he protected
the room well, so we just need him to keep,
you know, keep working at it, which he does. You know,
he was big, he was good tonight.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
So we already saw the highlights Chris of Christops with
the big extension, with the block. We're missing that room
protection a little bit, especially at the very beginning of
the season.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
What do you think of what Joe had to say
about what Christops showed you?
Speaker 4 (12:32):
Yeah, I think he nailed it right, Like, think about
it from Christops perspective. Right, he comes back, he's trying
to get in a rhythm. Then he has like a
tweaks and ankle, and then he gets back and all
of a sudden, you know, the other side hurts. It
just it's got to be frustrated when you're trying to
get back into that rhythm. But last night felt like
as comfortable as he has looked on both sides of
the court. I loved both ends, the way he controlled
(12:54):
the game and sixty points in the paint for the
Celtics season high. It was clear they came in with
an emphasis, especially without You'll get you out there to
let Christops be a focal point. And I just think
they need to do this more often, right, like the
three point there's just gonna be nice where it's not falling,
you can diversify the offense. What a luxury to have
a seven foot three guy that can just lob the
ball into and do his work. I thought. As he
(13:15):
gets comfortable, you're going to see both that starting lineup
and those sub lineups just start to take off.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
All right, everybody over at NBC Sports Boston thinks they're
so smart. We call your counterpart on the football side. No,
Harry the Senator, I'm going to start calling you the
stockbroker for your porzingis portfolio diversification. But you think you're
really smart, We're going to put you to the test.
This next segment is called take your Pick. Take your Pick.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
We post two choices to you, and you've got to
make a case for one.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
And that first choice is between would you rather have
three all stars heading to the Bay Area in February
from this Celtics roster, We're Jason Tatum winning MVP this year.
I'm going to make my case first. My case is
pretty straightforward. I love Derek White. I think he deserves
an All Star bit. I don't know how many times
that's gonna come around. Please get this man to San
(14:03):
Francisco over the fourteenth weekend. Okay, that is what I
want for Valentine's Dake Derek White, Because Jason Tatum's gonna
win MVP at some point in his career. I don't
think anyone's gonna doubt that. So if it's not this year,
it's gonna be next year or the year after that.
We need Derek White over in the Bay, So.
Speaker 4 (14:21):
We might have to fight to determine who is the
president of the Derek White Fan Club, because I feel
like I can make a pretty strong case myself, and
I will say that would be great to get him there,
and he deserves to be there, and it would be
the capstone of a year in which you want a
gold medal, won a world title, got an extension, like
everything is coming up Derek White. But for me, it
comes down to MVP is something that on the resume
(14:42):
just shines a little brighter than the All Star bid,
and for Jason Tatum to get that, it would also
mean the Celtics just absolutely launched in the second half
of this season. We know the real goal over here
is this trophy, but if Tatum was to get himself
a nice little MVP trophy to go along with it
wouldn't be the worst thing I hear.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
I think it's pretty good reasoning. I'll give you that one.
Speaker 2 (15:02):
This next one, coming off the heels of this road trip, Unfortunately,
we didn't get to see the Nuggets with Jokic last night,
but we did see Okac at almost full force. So
I'm asking you, if the Celtics are blessed and lucky
enough to give back to the finals, would you rather
see Okac or anybody else in the West. I'm going
to break it down and be reil with you, guys.
I do not want to see that Okac team in
(15:24):
the finals. That Okac team is feisty, and they don't
have chet Holmgrun back yet. He just wrapped up eight
weeks of rehab, so i'd expect him very soon. I'd
expect to hopefully see him when you host them on
March twelfth coming up. But that is a feisty, defensive
Okac team.
Speaker 4 (15:40):
And no Alex Caruso in that game as well. That's
team is legitimately scary. With the way that they can
play defense, they would stress you. But I do think
I like that matchup. I think would be great just
basketball wise to watch that. So I'm selfishly rooting for it.
Now you hear. I root for the town I want
to go spend the most time in, so I would
typically pick warm weather, but it's June, so every place
will be nice. I'll just have to lean into Bricktown
and all that Oklahoma City can offer, which is I.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
Don't know that is such a sports writer. Take what's
going to be the best destination for me to go
on vacation with. Let's go to our third one quickly.
This is pretty simple.
Speaker 3 (16:12):
How do you survive a New England winter? All right?
Speaker 2 (16:15):
I gotta be honest right now, I think I'm about
seventy percent soup. That's how I get through a New
England winter. I just want hot foods all the time,
as easily as I can get them, to quote.
Speaker 3 (16:25):
One George Costanza. Not now I'm shifting into soup.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
Which soup as you go to?
Speaker 3 (16:30):
Well, last night I had turkey chili that my husband
meet me in. I gotta say, very very well done, honey.
Speaker 4 (16:35):
Complements to the chef amazing. I say, you ignore winter completely.
You have to be bold when you go outside, pretend
like it's not even super super cold bowl and chilling cold.
I played golf last weekend and my friends think I'm
a lunatic because we were out there for five hours
in the freezing cold. But you want my pretty quickly that.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
Is lunatic behavior. Again.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
The thing you get to a certain age and I
guess you can golf in any conditions, but no, thank you,
you turn it into winter sport.
Speaker 4 (17:01):
You might have to go to the highlighter balls once
the snow starts falling, but otherwise we're good to go.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
Highlight revolved. All right.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
Well, the Celtics very happily for our local fans. They're
back at home for a nice little stand this weekend.
Let's get into future focus. This is where we look
ahead to let you know what's on the radar until
our next Celtics weekly show. And it's got to feel
good to be home. You're hosting the Kings. They're coming
off a five game wind streak, five straight under their
(17:28):
interim coach Doug Christy.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
What do you like about this match?
Speaker 4 (17:31):
So like, it's always interesting to me. We can debate
whether they needed to make a coaching change or not,
but it's clear they found a little something under Doug Christie,
you know, got them back on track. I'm happy for
my guy, Kyle Draper of NBC Sports Boston back in
the day getting to call these games and watch a
good team like look, they have a ton of talents
the bonus Fox. These guys are outstanding. I'm eager to
(17:52):
see just how much they can climb, if they can
keep all this momentum at least for one day, if
the Celtics need to.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
Turn them down, all right, And then on Sunday you're
hosting the Elicans, which maybe, standing wise, not the most
compelling matchup, but could we see some Zion Ooh so,
I don't know if you.
Speaker 4 (18:07):
Saw Zion's three sixty windmill in his return the other night.
We haven't gotten to see Zion enough in Boston, so
I really hope we get that matchup because it would
add a little spice to a Sunday matchup with the Pelicans.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
Well, Chris, we're both going to be down there at
Teed Garden. Hopefully you guys will be able to check
it out as well.
Speaker 3 (18:28):
And those are a couple of fun games.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
I would be remiss not to invite our audience to
like subscribe, find us on YouTube, find us at Celtics
dot com. Make sure that you participate in the comments,
because we want to hear all the interesting and perhaps
mean observations you have about Chris Borsberg.
Speaker 3 (18:45):
Definitely not he's going to be back again next week.
Thanks for joining us at Celtics Weekly
