It’s a week of ‘welcome backs’ on Celtics Weekly 🫡 We welcome the Celtics home from a 6-0 road trip, and Meghan Ottolini and Taylor Snow welcome Marc D’Amico back into the host’s chair. In this episode, Meghan and Marc highlight the back end of that record-setting trip, and we hear from Derrick White after breaking the Celtics’ single-season three-point mark. Taylor highlights some impressive Payton Pritchard rebounding numbers, setting Meghan and Marc up for a deep dive into Pritchard’s Sixth Man of the Year case. Speaking of awards, the Celtics earned a bunch this week: JD Davison was named G League Player of the Year, and Joe Mazzulla earned his fourth East Coach of the Month honor, so we make sure to spread love to them both. Finally, we shift gears from March to April, taking a look at a four-game week ahead.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You know, Sharman could be the next tablet check Shireman
could be the next bird.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Oh my gosh, what's it been like ten weeks.

Speaker 3 (00:19):
Longer than that, believe it or not. Yeah, it's been
three months.

Speaker 4 (00:22):
But I'm back and I'm stressed out because I feel
like a lot has changed since I went out.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
You missed a lot.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
The Celtics were the number two seed in the East
when I left.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Yeah, there's still the number two seeds.

Speaker 4 (00:34):
But when I left, Peyton Pritchard he was all over
the news as the leading six Man of the Year candidate.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
He's still leaving the conversation for six Man in a
Year award.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
I would say, yeah, okay, But when I left, Al
Horford was playing like he was ten years younger than
he was.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
Yeah, nothing's changed there.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
I guess he always plays that way.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
Has anything changed since I went out?

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Well, Luke did train the guys to bark like dogs,
so they're dogs now, Ruth.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
What.

Speaker 4 (01:02):
Hell?

Speaker 2 (01:03):
I feel like you missed a lot. Coming up on
this edition of Celtics Weekly, the Road Dog set a
six and oe record out West, Derek White breaks the
Celtics three point record, and Peyton Richard makes his case
for sixth Man of the Year, all that and more.
Now welcome into Celtics Weekly, where we catch you up

(01:39):
with everything on the World champ. They're back in Boston.
Mark Donk goes back in Boston. How's a field body?

Speaker 3 (01:46):
It feels great.

Speaker 4 (01:47):
But I'm sorry for all of you out there because
now you have me instead of Drew Carter and Chris Forrestburg.
Significant downgrade. I'm sorry, but not absolutely not.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
We've got a lot to get to this show. I'm JD. Davison,
just one.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
G League MVY amazing.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
We're gonna get to the main Celtics later on the show.
Of course, Joe Mizzula keep this award season.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
Rolling award season each.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
Of the month for the East. So we got a
lot to get to. But the Celtics are the road
dogs and they're coming off a six and oh historic
road trip. So let's hit weekly. Rewind Cris start with Christophsporzingis,
who spoke this into existence. You guys head out on
a season on six game trip.

Speaker 5 (02:27):
What is a successful trip?

Speaker 6 (02:29):
Who looks like for us? Probably six six and oh,
I would say for us, but uh, we'll see. I mean,
obviously we expect to win every game. I don't know,
it was maybe I don't know, a handful of games
this season again that we were not favorites. So I
don't know what the betting odds will say, but probably yeah,

(02:51):
trying to win every game and then I don't know
what our roster rules will look like. That's another question.
But oh, yeah, six and oh come back home. It
would be perfect.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
The unicorn becomes the oracle. I love it.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
I love that.

Speaker 4 (03:05):
Yeah, Hey, listen, we've got cookies and cream, right Jalen Brown,
we all know a couple of years ago he did
the energy is shifting, and now his best friend on
the team, Christas Porzingis, is also predicting the future by
saying they're going six to zero. Just an incredible, incredible
road trip from them. Never had been done in the
history of the most storied franchise in basketball, and somehow

(03:26):
they got it done on this trip. I thought it
was a little ambitious to say that going out of
that locker room after the win here at TD guard him,
but clearly he knew something that we all didn't.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Absolutely he set the expectations. Let's take a look at
the competition that they faced, because where we left off
last week. It was Phoenix and a nice little start here,
even though they didn't have Jason Tatum. They won by
thirty points. Celtics shooters had ten three pointers in the
first quarterbow.

Speaker 3 (03:52):
Yeah, no question.

Speaker 4 (03:53):
This was one of the best all around, especially offensive
games that the Celtics have had all season. I believe
it was a fifty to forty ninety game as a team.
They've only done that two times this season, so one
of the best shooting performances they've had, one of the
best offensive performances they've had, and just across the board,
everyone contributed, and like you said, it's nice to see
if they can do that when they got one of
the top dogs not playing.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
You see Porzingis on defense there. He went four to
five from the three point line, had thirty points.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
Yeah, that's not bad. That's not bad.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
That makes the difference. Let's move on to San Antonio.
Jason Tatum made his triumphant return after his angle injury.
He dropped twenty nine points, ten rebounds, eight assists. He's
been so close to those triple doubles all season. Almost
got it, Almost got it.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
He's floating with it every night.

Speaker 4 (04:37):
I feel like he has a chance to get a
triple double every time he takes the court. And we
all know that Tatum has been in the MVP conversation
for the last few years, right like every single year
he's going to be in the top five somewhere around there.
Somehow he's getting better with his all around game. I mean,
he's flirting with a triple double every time he takes
the court. So great to see him kind of gearing

(04:58):
up to the playoff run by doing this in both shooting, passing, rebounding, defense.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
He's doing everything across the board. So great to see.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
And then, of course, finally Memphis, the last stop on
this road trip, Christaps porzingis shot fifty percent of it,
Al Horford and Drew Holliday, those guys joined Derek White
and Jason Tatum in double digit Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
Not a bad performance there.

Speaker 4 (05:18):
You wrap up a trip against a team that has
a brand new coach, that has Jah Moran back in
the lineup, that is really fighting for its playoff lives
right now, and it's the last trip or the last
game of your road trip. So if you think there's
going to be a letdown, that's probably going to be
the one.

Speaker 3 (05:33):
And yet here the Celtics. Are they sweep it?

Speaker 4 (05:36):
They run away after that time out that Jill Mizzoula
call during the second quarter. Really impressive that they responded
right there and came back and dominated the rest of
the night. So awesome performance from them to be able
to close it out against fighting against all those circumstances
that I just mentioned.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Absolutely, it was an outstanding second half. But of course,
the headline from that game was Derek White setting a
new franchise record of three pointers in one season that
was previously held by Isaiah Thomas in the twenty sixteen
twenty seventeenth season. So let's hear from Derek White, how
about to hit that mark? In our small vice segment,
Herrious She's in said, you guys have been talking about

(06:16):
that three point record. What it feels like to break
it tonight?

Speaker 5 (06:21):
Yeah, we talked about on the plane, and it's pretty
cool that there's three of us like so close to
to do what something special. And I mean, honestly, uh
just looking back on my career and never thought I'd
be in this position, and so I'm just thankful for
the coaching staffs tak it for the guys on this team,

(06:42):
and I know I wouldn't be able to do it
without them, So I'll hold it for now until one
of them breaks my records.

Speaker 3 (06:51):
That's cool.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
Why do you see that?

Speaker 5 (06:53):
Because they're great at what they do.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
No, but you don't You didn't think you would be
able to Oh.

Speaker 5 (07:00):
That you watched me early in my career, I think
straight self explanatory. But I even didn't think I would
shoot this many threes and so just kind of just
keep developing. Thankful to have a coach, your SAEF and
teammates that believe in me and trust me and allow
me to go out there and be aggressive and do
what I do.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
Derek White is the most humble NBA player that I've
ever dealt with. But you have some outstanding context to
why two hundred forty six three pointers now two hundred
and forty seven at the end of that game is
such a big number.

Speaker 4 (07:32):
Yeah, it's context around that quote, because it sounded like
he was in disbelief of what he has done himself.
And the reason why he was in disbelief is because
for the first four plus seasons of his career, which
is his entire career with the San Antonio Spurs, he
made three hundred total three pointers in that entire span
four plus years. He gets to Boston, keeps working on

(07:54):
his three point shot, and then this season alone he's
made two hundred and forty seven and counting with another
six or seven games to go.

Speaker 3 (08:01):
So a little bit more context.

Speaker 4 (08:03):
Three hundred in his first four plus seasons with the
Spurs and now two hundred and forty seven and counting
just this season alone with the Celtics.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
He has put in the work. He has become one of.

Speaker 4 (08:13):
The best three point shooters in the NBA. And as
you know, he's he is the most clutched three point
shooter in the NBA right now.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
Absolutely, But as you mentioned that that as you're watching
this right now, that might not stand. Hey hit the
rector that he said Jason Tatum. Maybe you're watching this
a little later in the week where everyone's stave, but
maybe you're catching us on the weekend. Jason Tatum could
have passed it. They could have gone back and forth.
It's it's gonna be a race to finish line. And
if you like numbers, you're gonna love the next part

(08:40):
of the show. We're going to Taylor Snow for Tailormads
Stats ten now for tailormads, dats. This is where we
croach some basketball numbers with our chief York officer, that's
Taylor Snow of Celtics dot Com. So, Taylor, what numbers
have you cooked up for us this week?

Speaker 1 (08:55):
You know, there's a lot that stood out about that
six and Ohero road trip.

Speaker 3 (08:58):
I think that stood out to me.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
All six wins came by double digits, which that ties
a franchise record for most consecutive road wins by ten
or more points. Funny, yes, they did on one trip.
Funny thing is the team that they tied was last
year's team, who also won six straight on the road
separate trips, but in the month of March, same thing
that this team did. Now, winning on the road, that's

(09:22):
a big part of building a championship mindset, and this
kind of shows this down here. Just all the times
that they have won at least five straight on the
road by double digits, pretty much every time they have
won a championship that season or at least made the finals.

Speaker 3 (09:37):
So what are you trying to say.

Speaker 1 (09:38):
I'm not trying to say anything, but okay, they're building
the right mindset the Road Ducks building right now.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
I feel like, you went over your character limit on this.
I think I did.

Speaker 1 (09:44):
Yes, Yes, That's what I'm paying for, all right. And
the end of that road trip, al Horford led the charge.
No surprise, he keeps doing this stuff. Twenty six points.
It's a season high. That's actually the most points he
has scored in the Celtics uniform since Otober twenty seventeen.
So that was just a couple of weeks in the
Jason Tatums rookie season.

Speaker 3 (10:05):
That's crazy.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
I wasn't once again asking for the alhor for a
method because the way that this guy turns back the
clock every year. I mean, we joked about it in
the opener of the show, but it's like, what is
the nutrition there, what is the conditioning there? How are
we still getting these numbers from here?

Speaker 3 (10:21):
He's a special man. I do want to know.

Speaker 1 (10:22):
He did score twenty six in the finals a couple
of years ago, so this is a regular season stat
right here. But last time that he led the team
in scoring was twenty nineteens. Last time he did on
the road was two thousand and seven.

Speaker 3 (10:34):
Literally more than six years ago. It's crazy.

Speaker 1 (10:38):
And then last thing, Peyton Pritcher, we've talked a lot
about his scoring, deservedly so leads all bench players in
scoring three pointers.

Speaker 3 (10:47):
I feel like one.

Speaker 1 (10:47):
Thing that's been overlooked is his offensive rebounding. His ninety
five offensive rebounds that's six foot one, which is incredible.
It just to show some context there, I looked up
all the offensive rebounding among players under six to four,
and he's almost thirty ahead of the next player he's
six one. Well he's motley cooked here. But yeah, so,

(11:09):
I mean he is just crushing it. And I know
one argument could be, you know, Celtic to a lot
of threes, so a lot of rebounds rebounds to go
out the perimeter. But in Peyton's case, he crashes the
boards a lot, like he just slithers in there, pulls
down these rebounds. So I mean he's doing a little
bit of everything. It's not just his scoring the season.

Speaker 4 (11:26):
And by the way, that is exactly what the coaches
are asking of him. In other guards like Drew Holliday,
a lot of offensive rebounds. Corner crashes is where they're
coming from, and they're getting those offensive rebounds. So not
only is he doing it, but it's actually a part
of Boston's game.

Speaker 3 (11:39):
Plan every night.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
Absolutely, it's gonna be moderately tall, King Spring. There are
not a lot of short kings in the NBA, but
moderately tall, but.

Speaker 3 (11:48):
There are on this show. You know what I'm saying.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
All right, Well, if you want Peyton Pritcher, don't go
anywhere after this break because we're going to discuss his
great case for six Man of the Year. Right after this.

Speaker 4 (12:16):
Richards Past had to finish for halting.

Speaker 2 (12:30):
Welcome back. Our hot topic this week is a guy
who's been a hot topic all year. Of course, that's
Peyton Pritchard. And exciting timing here because the Celtics are
officially kicking off his campaign for six.

Speaker 3 (12:41):
Man of the Year in his Awards season ward.

Speaker 2 (12:44):
That the Celtics are well acquainted with, with so many guys,
most recently Malcolm Brogden winning this award. What is the
case here? Mark for Peyton Free?

Speaker 3 (12:53):
What is the case?

Speaker 4 (12:54):
Well, let me tell you, and I'm going to pick
up my piece of paper and read it, because there's
no way I would be able to memorize all of
these stats that say it's one hundred percent that he
should win this award. All right, He's come off the
bench for seventy two of his seventy three games.

Speaker 3 (13:07):
That means only one start.

Speaker 4 (13:09):
No one else in the top six of bench scoring
all season has played more than sixty off the bench,
so he comes off the bench every game. That's why
he should win this award. On top of that, twenty
more three pointers than any other bench player in the
league in eighty five, more than the number three ranked
player coming off the bench.

Speaker 3 (13:27):
I'm gonna continue.

Speaker 4 (13:28):
He's the only bench player with more than a thousand
points boom. He's the top fifteen in reserves in rebounds
as a six foot one guard. He's third in assists,
He's fifth in steals. He is the best in the
NBA among reserves in plus minus at plus three to
ninety one. That is a slam dunk case. There is

(13:49):
no way this guy is not winning the award. I
think everyone knows it already. He probably doesn't want to
acknowledge it, but there's no way the voters can go
in any other direction.

Speaker 2 (13:59):
That is a Peyton Pritchard manifesto right there. Thank you
for bringing up last night, and don't forget that forty
to forty game with Derek White that was There have
been these awesome moments for Peyton Pritchard throughout.

Speaker 4 (14:10):
This is gonna be a great trivia question, like twenty
years done right.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
Which to Celtics. Everybody will guess the Jays, but it
was Derek White and Peyton Printard. But as we keep
Award season rolling, we got a head over, we got
a head up, I should say, to Portland, Maine for
our player spotlight. So this week we're not just doing
a player spotlight. I mean we're gonna start here with

(14:34):
a really cool piece of video, but it's a main
spotlight because we're looking at the main Celtics and the
wonderful playoff run that they're just starting. JD. Davison gets
G League MVP and here's him. This is a really
cool video him learning the news and then three thirty
eight twelve on two shots.

Speaker 3 (14:56):
You know what, that's why you're the MVP.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
What okay? Super fun. Those guys have fun up in Maine.

(15:24):
For JD though, I mean, this is how far he's grown.
He had fourteen double doubles this year. And we'll get
to the heater that main overall as a team is
on in the G League. But JD Davison, I think
you'd be lying if you said that you saw this
coming for him just a year.

Speaker 3 (15:41):
Oh my god.

Speaker 4 (15:41):
I mean, what an incredible level of growth for him,
both as a person and as a player.

Speaker 3 (15:46):
Like he's come so far.

Speaker 4 (15:47):
If you just talk to him now versus when he
talked him when he came out of Alabama, Like he's
a different guy and he's also a different player. This
is just incredible growth out of him. He has turned
himself into an NBA player. He's not a G League player.
That's what happens when you win MVP and he average
whatever it was twenty five, seven and five throughout the season,
shooting forty eight percent from the field. He is an

(16:09):
NBA player. He has earned this. The team has helped
him earn it by winning and being on a hot run,
which we're going to talk about right here. But that's
just such an awesome moment, Like I'm gonna remember watching
that for the rest of my life. I know he's
gonna remember that moment as well.

Speaker 2 (16:23):
Yes, but as we said, the main Celtics, all right,
they're getting their playoffs underway in the G League. They're
trying to avenge the title that they were runners up
for last year, and they're sixteen and four in the
last twenty games, so they're off to of their yas.

Speaker 4 (16:38):
That ain't man, It's like they're doing exactly what the
Boston Celtics are doing.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
They're just winning, winning, winning.

Speaker 4 (16:44):
But listen, we're seeing highlights right here against the Westchester Knicks,
and that's the team that they're going to face in
the semi finals, so they're gonna have and they're only
one in three against Westchester this season, so they have
not had a ton of success against the Knicks. But
let's hope that this hot play that they're riding right now,
and they're riding on the coattails of the MVP of
the entire league, who dropped thirty eight last night to

(17:06):
go along with twelve assists. Let's hope that they can
ride that into the finals yet again and this time
come out on top.

Speaker 2 (17:13):
We'll be keeping an eye on you, mane. But break
out your easy pass because we're going back down south
just about an hour forty hour forty five, depending on
that traffic around the Tobin Bridge. It can get a
little oh yeah, that can get to Boston because they
are back home and we are getting into our future.
Focus is where we look at what's coming down the pipeline.
It starts with Miami. Miami is coming off of a

(17:35):
win streak of their own. Five games for Miami look
at them.

Speaker 4 (17:39):
Yeah, how does the team lose ten straight and then
win five straight. I'm not quite sure how that happens.
But Miami is having a little life right now, going
toward potentially a playoff run. And listen, it's all about
their defense. Their defense is about ten or eleven points
better in terms of defensive efficiency during this run than
their season number.

Speaker 3 (17:58):
So the defense has been really good.

Speaker 4 (18:00):
Think they have five or six guys on the roster
who are averaging better than a steal per game during
this five game win streak. So the defense is flying around.
That's what the Celtics are gonna have to pay attention to tonight.
They've got to take care of the ball and they've
got to make sure that they move the ball until
they get a great shot.

Speaker 3 (18:16):
Don't settle for good shots.

Speaker 2 (18:17):
All right. We started off Weekly Rewind with the Phoenix Suns.
The Phoenix Suns come to Taty Garden on Friday. Not
expected to see Kevin Durant in that game, but what
else can the Celtics.

Speaker 4 (18:27):
Take away from well, they just won by thirty in
Phoenix without Jason Tatum, so let's hope that they can
come out and win by thirty with.

Speaker 3 (18:34):
Jason Tatum during this game.

Speaker 4 (18:36):
Listen, I think a lot of Celtics fans have been
excited about this game since the schedule came out. You're
gonna get Booker Beale and Kevin Durant. We don't know
who's going to play in this game for the Suns
on Friday night, but it's Friday Night.

Speaker 3 (18:47):
Against the team that came into.

Speaker 4 (18:49):
The season and we know they've got a ton of talent.
Let's hope it's a competitive game, but let's hope that
the Celtics play won't.

Speaker 2 (18:54):
Come out on top absolutely. And then Sunday, of course,
we round out this little home stand here with Washington
and Jordan Poole just had thirty five against Miami. Was
a loss in Miami, But Jordan Poole has somebody to
be reckoned with at times on this Washington Wizard team.

Speaker 4 (19:09):
He's had some moments against the Celtics two some not
so great and some really great. But listen, this is
a Washington team that is not playing for the playoffs.
That team, I won't say the team, the organization is
playing for the lottery right now, so we don't even
know who's going to be out on the court when
they meet on Sunday. But the Celtics gotta take care
of business. They just had an entire road trip basically

(19:30):
against teams in this position, teams that are not really
in the playoff hunt. Okay, they took care of business
on that trip. They got to keep doing that here
as they close out the week on Sunday against the
Washington Wizards when they come to town. And by the way,
that if they do play everyone in the Wizards, they
do have some good young talent on that team, so
you just never know what can happen.

Speaker 2 (19:49):
Then the week ends at MSG, the Celtics will see
the Knicks. They're the two seed, the Knicks are the
three seeds. That's not gonna change with this matchup, but
still a fun one to look at it at the
end of this year.

Speaker 4 (20:00):
Yeah, and a lot of people. I feel like people
are overlooking the New York Knicks right now. It's as
if like Jalen Brunton is out, so they're not a
competitive team. No, I think they've won five out of
the last seven games or something along those lines.

Speaker 3 (20:13):
You've got Bridges is playing.

Speaker 4 (20:14):
Awesome basketball right now, og Andernobi is playing awesome basketball.
Those guys are picking up the scoring load. With Jalen
Brunton out, they still got cat like. There's a lot
of talent on that team. I would not want to
play them in the playoffs. A lot of people are
kind of overlooking them. That team is built to win
in the playoffs. So let's hope that the Celtics grab
a win this time and then if they meet in
the playoffs they can continue that role.

Speaker 2 (20:36):
Absolutely, let's keep this win streak going.

Speaker 3 (20:38):
Yes, let's go Mark.

Speaker 2 (20:40):
Great job back, buddy, you did a wonderful job. We
miss you a lot. We are so happy to have
you back. We are happy to have you with us
every Wednesday. Keep watching, keep leaving us comments, any tailor
made stats, or any social snapshots to comment below. The
playoffs are coming, guys. Playoffs are and we're not going anywhere.

Speaker 3 (21:01):
We'll see you next week.
