Speaker 1 (00:00):
Coming up on this edition of Celtics Weekly, we get
a special look at Pete Richard's reaction to win the
NBA sixth Man of the Year. We answered burning playoff
questions from you the fans, and look ahead to Game
two against the Orlando Magic.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
All that and more, Now.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
And wilcome into Celtics Weekly Playoffs edition. Megan on Aleini
here with Mark Demico, and we come to you from
(00:40):
a world where Payne Pritchard is NBA sixth Man of
the Year.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
I did not explode as much as I thought it
was going all.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
Right, well, very well done.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
There's always a little excess there, just like the confetti
you sometimes see falling from the rafts kindergarten.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
But graduate Payton Pritchard.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Amazutiful, beautiful season.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
Let's see the moment where Peyton Pritchard learned that he
won the award.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
So the twenty.
Speaker 4 (01:12):
Sixth Man of the Year from the Boston Celtics.
Speaker 5 (01:18):
Good job, sir, Gerry.
Speaker 6 (01:23):
But I will.
Speaker 7 (01:26):
That thing.
Speaker 5 (01:26):
I think it was.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
It was Richard, followed by person followed by.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
Us So Payne winning this award not the biggest surprise
of the awards season.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
As it gets under.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
Way, foregne conclusive.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Certainly well deserved though.
Speaker 1 (01:52):
I mean this, he's the only guy who had over
a thousand points coming off the bench. He set the
record for three point coming off the bench, and he
got eighty two of one hundred votes, mark.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
As he deserved.
Speaker 5 (02:07):
And you just kind of mentioned just how good he
was coming off the bench. But he played seventy seven
of his eighty games while coming off the bench. To me,
that's an important marker of like what a six Man
of the Year is and what they're all about. It's
a guy who comes off the bench and plays that
reserve role and he was unbelievable in that role all
season long. Taylor Snow put a story out last night
(02:28):
about this, and basically in that story, he said, Peyton
Pritchard started the season playing excellent. It was the front
runner for six Man of the Year like from the
get go, and then carried it through the entire season.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
You don't always see that happen.
Speaker 5 (02:40):
This was like an end to end win for the
award for Peyton Pritchell's so unbelievable season. Really cool for
him with the story that he's kind of navigated throughout
his careers. So I couldn't be happier for Peyton Pritchard.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
Career highs across the board for Peyton Pritchard. I think
a lot of us saw the potential here seasons back, and.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Just to see it come to fruition for him is awesome.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
One more thing on him.
Speaker 5 (03:05):
When he first got here, there was a lot of
talk out there about like not necessarily knowing if he
was going to be an NBA player or an impact player.
Early on, I actually posted I thought he could average
twenty points per game for a team that maybe wasn't
that good.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
The reason I said that is because I.
Speaker 5 (03:20):
Knew from everyone in the basketball operations that he was
dominating practices as an early rookie. He was dominating practices
in his work ethic was legendary from the second he
walked in the building. So they've known, Brad Stevens has
known that this is gonna happen for a long time.
Speaker 6 (03:35):
Now.
Speaker 5 (03:36):
As you said, it's just coming to fruition for everyone
to see.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
So the award is named for John Havelichik, the sixth
Man of the Year award, and although Havlichik never won
the award because it came about after his playing days,
Pritchard is the fourth Celtic to win that award, and
we're gonna have a very special guest later in the
show to talk about that. So you want to stay
tuned the entire show. But we are in a playoff series,
(04:02):
yes we are. So let's get to our Game one
recap against the Orlando Magic, and we got to start
with Payon Pritchard because we got all these different we
got all these different moments that were really game changing moments.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
And the first one that we want.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
To go to is quite late in the game, starting
the fourth quarter, but you start with the beautiful defensive
play by Sam Hawser and it ends in a Pritcher
three that put them up sixteen, really closed out the
game for them, even though it was this early in before.
Speaker 5 (04:28):
He honestly could probably be a boxer because he lands
so many knockout punches. I just feel like we saw
it in Game five of the NBA Finals. We see
it here time and time again. He hits shots that
are just like Boom knocked the other team out and
they are done for the.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Rest of the night.
Speaker 5 (04:43):
This was one of those shots where you just knew
Boston was going to grab the win after he made
that shot.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
Biggest game changer of the night though, without a doubt,
our defensive king, Drew Holiday. Let's look at the stretch
of Drew Holiday. Okay, so we're gonna see a lot
of beautiful perimeter shooting here, but it's what he does
on both sides of the floor that keeps him a
champion year after year.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
All I was thinking about is this series was going
on in the third court of him, just like taking
over the game.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
At both ends of the court.
Speaker 5 (05:14):
Was this guy is like probably regarded as number five
in Boston's starting lineup, and he is taking over a
playoff game.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
Here's the alley up to Jalen Brown.
Speaker 5 (05:25):
But that's what I was thinking, is like, this is
probably the fifth guy in boston starting lineup, and he
is dominating a playoff game and winning it almost all
by himself during that stretch. So that just goes to
show you just how deep, just how great the Boston
Celtics are. I don't think there's another team in the
NBA that could have that happen where their fifth starter
(05:46):
and I don't even know if they're all on the
same playing level, but I think publicly they would regard
you as fifth, but I don't think any other team
would have their fifth starter take over a playoff game
and push their team to a win.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
The Celtics had to make adjustments at halftime because the
were up and they were dominating them on the boards,
to be quite honest, in the first half, and Drew
Aliday was really the engine, the motor behind those adjustments.
Let's hear him talk about his performance after the game.
Speaker 6 (06:11):
I think we have enough talent on this team where
I don't necessarily take it upon myself, but I think
everybody has kind of that mentality where if I get
a chance, I'm gonna do whatever I can to carry
it a load. So for me tonight, it was defensively
and I'm trying to hound the ball and hoel glad
I continue to do that.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Finally, going into this game, there were a lot of
questions about how Jalen Brown was gonna look.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
He missed a couple.
Speaker 1 (06:35):
Games at the end of the regular season dealing with
a banged up injury, and well, let's just take a
look at a beautiful play that he had in the
game in Game one, Because I think Celtics fans should
feel pretty confident about this second take that.
Speaker 5 (06:51):
He had a nice little second effort here off the
offensive glass for the Boston Celtics and Jalen taking it
to the rim for the slam.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
But he had a nice stretch where he had ten points.
Speaker 5 (06:58):
I believe in that quarter him and Drew Holliday both
kind of took over and drove the Celtics to a
big lead. So listen, him and Tatum did not look
perfect during Game one. I chalked that up to the
fact that the Celtics hadn't played a game, and they
had not played a game in like nine days or
something like that. It's gonna take a little bit to
get back in rhythm. I expect them to be great tonight.
(07:21):
The other night was rust tonight. I think they're gonna
be great in Game two.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
Okay, Mark, you got a little confetti dandriff on that shoulders.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
You're gonna have to brush that off.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
In the meantime, let's get back to Peyton Richard are
sixth man of the Hair. Let's hear from some of
his teammates just this week about why he's earned out award.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
I'm just so proud of Peyton and the job that
he's done. His consistency with his work ethic and how
hard he works, how he's taking care of his body.
He took the challenge on this year and trying to
take his game to another level only on the offensive end,
but defensively. It's remarkable to see just being put in
different positions and trying to figure it out a few
(08:07):
games this year that he could have gone and scored
a lot more, or chase records and done things like that.
And you can see this tape because you can see
the film. Uh, he's making the right play after right
play in different moments instead of going for him, He's
making an extra pass because it's the right thing to do.
He's passing up a three and getting a two when
(08:28):
he has a chance to break a three point record.
So like, he plays the right way and and and
I'm just so impressed how he's been able to handle everything.
I'm just you know, very very happy for Peyton.
Speaker 6 (08:40):
Paying being Payton. I think when he first came out,
he had like a quick eleven points. So I think
Payne's being Payton. Tecond opportunity. Payton's also a gamer, as
everybody here, sees any opportunity that he can to put
that ball in the bast if he does it. But
what makes him special is what he does on the
on the defensive end, picking up anybody full court, just
being a hounding delivers in vun so Melyssa say.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Pritchard's teammates certainly recognize his value of his efficiency.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
With the team, Payne being Peyton. Hopefully we see Peyton
being Peyton as the playoffs roll on.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
Don't go anywhere because after the break we will have
Melissa Valdez in studio to hear from you guys, the fans,
and we have a very special guest, somebody.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
That just has a dying passion for something they love
and they pour everything into it. But like, that's the
definition of hard work.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
That's what I believe in.
Speaker 8 (09:33):
That just don't think you accomplish anything at the highest
levels unless you give it.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
We all.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
I'm just so proud of Frank and the job that
he's done, his consistency with his work ethic and how
hard he works. He took the challenge on this year
and trying to take his game to another level. It's
remarkable to see. I'm just very happy for Babe.
Speaker 1 (10:02):
Welcome back, everybody, thanks for sticking with us. We are
now going courtside with Beth Haliicch. She is the wife
of Celtic's legend John Havelachich, for whom the six Men
of the Year award that Peyton Pritett.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
Is receiving is named for.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
Beth, thank you so much for joining us on Celtics Weekly,
And the first question that I have for you is
how does it feel to see John's legacy live on
through this award that is so coveted by guys looking
for their roles in the league, and particularly as a
Celtic is winning it this year.
Speaker 7 (10:36):
Yes, it is a thrill to me and to our
family to have John's name in perpetuity with the Sixth
Man Award. We are so proud of him and proud
of anyone that may receive this.
Speaker 5 (10:54):
Yeah, Beth, what do you think John would appreciate most
about the way that Peyton Pitcher plays? And I'm sure
that you're not able to watch every game, you're not
up here in the Boston area right now, but from
what you've heard, from what you've seen, what do you
think John would be most proud about of what Peyton
Pritchard brings to the court every night for the Boston Celtics.
Speaker 7 (11:13):
I think he would be proud of him receiving it
because Peyton brings everything he has, it seems, to the
game every time he plays.
Speaker 5 (11:24):
That's the thing that Peyton is most proud about himself.
Actually he actually said that yesterday. He said, I am
so proud of the way how hard I play every night.
So you hit the nail on the head there, Beth.
I believe this is the fourth Celtic to win the award.
Just a couple of years ago it was Malcolm Brogden
who won the award, and I believe you were kind
enough to be present to be on the court for
(11:46):
that trophy presentation.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
What was that like in that moment for you to
be able to.
Speaker 5 (11:50):
Be out on the court in handing that award that
has your great husband's name on it that you were
able to hand over to Malcolm Brogden a couple of
seasons ago.
Speaker 9 (12:00):
I was very emotional with that that presentation because it
was so wonderful to be able to stand in for
John and and also who's heartbreaking it he couldn't be
here and see it himself.
Speaker 7 (12:22):
I was very emotional and very proud of John and
done his all his.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
Well, Bet, thank you again for joining us such a
beautiful tribute to your husband John and Peyton Purtarde is
certainly a worthy recipient of it.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
We enjoyed having you so much.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
Hopefully we'll get you a big part of the Celtics
family back on our program again. Thank you.
Speaker 7 (12:49):
I would love to and congratulations to Peyton.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
Time now for social snapshot with Melissa. Melissa, our first
shot of the playoffs.
Speaker 8 (13:00):

He's got the Barney Rubble hemline. What is this?
Speaker 8 (13:37):
It looks like he's a call piece the Boston thing.
But shout out to all of our fans.
Speaker 5 (13:44):
Shout out to him like he's always getting the crowds
up before that.
Speaker 8 (13:49):

Let's take a look at what next.
Speaker 8 (14:30):
All right, let's take a look at the next post.
Oh and here's all right and Drew Carter, who ran
the marathon for the Shamrock Foundation. Congratulations Drew, But this
is a poll from at last chair Luke Massive shout
outs to Drew absolutely smatched his goal and crushed his
first marathon. Thank you for carrying me through the finish line.
(14:51):
It was an honor to get to run with you today.
Speaker 3 (14:53):
Man, Go Celtics.
Speaker 8 (14:54):
Apparently, Luke it was another runner he found Drew along
the way. They motivated each other and they passed the
bent flight together.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
That's amazing.
Speaker 2 (15:02):
Shout out Drew.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
We're so proud of your.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
True broadcast professional.
Speaker 1 (15:07):
Any time that there was a picture or video, sounds
having the time of his life already, and my expression was.
Speaker 2 (15:18):
Yeah, well nine.
Speaker 5 (15:20):
Awesome and actually really cool that he was able to
sync up with one of his.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
Fans during the that's amazing, all right.
Speaker 8 (15:27):
And speaking of legends, Drew was not the only legend
running the marriage Taylor Snow poles from our guy at
Taylor c Snow the Boston Larry Thon and this runner
ran in full Larry Bird gear.
Speaker 3 (15:42):
The entire marathon.
Speaker 8 (15:43):
I know he was channeling his inner champions.
Speaker 5 (15:45):
So well, Taylor, you always do nice self promotion by putting.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
Yourself I love.
Speaker 2 (15:53):
We're back over here in the mess that Mark.
Speaker 1 (15:55):
Made, and we put out the call on social media
a couple of days ago. We want to hear from
you guys, the fans, and if you ever want to
interact with the show, you can comment right below here
on YouTube, like and subscribe the Celtics channel.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
But in the meantime, let's answer some of your questions.
Let's start with question number good one one.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
All right, so do you see the Celtics playing more physical?
Speaker 2 (16:17):
This comes from Tirade.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
Do you see them getting payback for pull Anthony's ridiculous
leg whip on Pritchard or the push on Tatum?
Speaker 2 (16:25):
His opinion not ours, Yes, true. I'll say this.
Speaker 1 (16:28):
We did get glimpses of the Celtics at practice the
other day at the very end of practice, seeing them
work on their physicality.
Speaker 2 (16:35):
But if you listen to Al Horford talk.
Speaker 1 (16:36):
After that practice and not really consider him kind of
the mentality leader of this team, he talked exactly that
that's what it's about.
Speaker 2 (16:43):
It's about mindset, not just physicality.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
But he knows the edge that the Celtics have basketball wise,
and that's.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
Where they're going to lean.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (16:51):
Peyton Pritchard also made a comment about this yesterday at
practice and he said, whatever they do, they can keep
playing like that.
Speaker 3 (16:58):
It's not gonna.
Speaker 5 (16:58):
Knock us off our half of what we're trying to accomplish.
So I think these guys are just they are mentally tough,
they get it, they're physically tough. And by the way,
I don't think Cole Anthony did anything dirty.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
I don't think that was ridiculous.
Speaker 5 (17:11):
Tie, I understand what you're saying, but I think it
was just fighting through a screen. Caught Peyton Pritchard with
the knee whatever. But yeah, I think the Celtics are
going to be just finding that category tonight and Peyton
Pritchard just said it.
Speaker 2 (17:22):
Yesterday at the same time.
Speaker 1 (17:23):
Round one, we understand why you're protective of these guys.
Let's go to our second question. This one comes from
Playoff Green Guru. Another question through Game one versus the
Magic the Celtics allowed thirteen offensive boards.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
Is that a matchup issue or just effort?
Speaker 1 (17:39):
And how did they tighten up those interior gaps moving forward? Well,
for the first one, I'll say that we did see
a great adjustment from the Celtics after halftime. Ten of
those thirteen offensive boards came in the first half, when
when you came out of the halftime, you have Drew
Holliday Jason Tatum making really concentrated efforts, and they ended
(17:59):
with just three offensive boards from the Magic in the
second half, so I think you're already seeing some of
the adjustments there.
Speaker 5 (18:04):
The other thing that I'm going to point out is
that Orlando shot forty two percent in the game, and
when a team shoots forty two percent, that inherently means
they're going to have more opportunities to grab offensive rebounds.
And by the way, the Celtics grab nine offensive rebounds
of their own, so there's only a four offensive rebound
difference while the other teams shot worse. So in my opinion,
it's basically a wash there. So you got to also
(18:27):
pay attention to what the Magic shoot. If they have
more opportunities to grab offensive rebounds, it's just because they missed.
Speaker 3 (18:32):
The ball more.
Speaker 1 (18:33):
Let's go to our final question here. Our question number
three are submission from you guys the fans. This one
comes from Sleeper Celtics. What do you think is the Celtics'
best strategy for limiting Polo Pallo ban Caro finishes with
thirty six points in game one. I got to say,
like anytime that you can use the cheat code, that
is true holiday you'll want to do that. He kept
(18:55):
them over in that game one when he was guarding
him just over five minutes as his primary defender. I
don't know if that's realistic because they're going to look
for those switches for Polo ban Caro. But I will
say I feel confident that you still won by seventeen
points when Palo Bancaro went off for thirty six.
Speaker 5 (19:10):
I'm with you on that. That's one of my three points.
You've already proven that you can win while.
Speaker 3 (19:14):
He goes off. That's number one.
Speaker 5 (19:16):
Number two, You've got to trust all of your individual
defenders if they get switched on him. The Celtics even
did that with Derek White defending on Polo Bankaro, so
they're trusting their individual defenders. And then if they need
to show a crowd, we talked about that on the
last show last Thursday.
Speaker 3 (19:30):
If they need to.
Speaker 5 (19:31):
Show a crowd, show a crowd, help out and try
to make him pass the ball. But those are the
three things we got to think about with the Celtics
defending Polow.
Speaker 1 (19:38):
You guys, we have three games to get through before
our next episode of Celtics going to be busy.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
So let's give you.
Speaker 5 (19:45):
It could only be I guess it could be three three, Yeah,
maximum of three we'll seek.
Speaker 3 (19:48):
Yeah, I was doing bad mathemat heads.
Speaker 2 (19:51):
Don't make me do Matt Live.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
Okay, we are journalists, our journalism back, and we're not
bad people. Let's get into our weekly predictions to tell
you what we think is going to happen in those games.
And our first question here are weekly prediction is who's
going to be the leading scorer through the first four
games of this series? Now, the series could just be
four games. If it's a Celtics sweep, Who's going to
(20:14):
be the leading scorer.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
I'm going to start mark.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
This is not any in any way disrespect to any
individual Celtic. Because you saw Derek White have thirty in
the first game, crazing great performance. I do think it's
gonna be Pallo Bancaro, just because the Celtics have so
many different offensive looks.
Speaker 2 (20:30):
You can have a Derek White.
Speaker 1 (20:31):
Knight, you can have a Christoph sporzings night, you can
have a jtjb Knight. We'll see going forward. I think
if you look at the series overall through four games,
it's gonna be being Caro.
Speaker 5 (20:40):
I looked at this question specifically for the Celtics, So
I like your broader view, but I'm going to answer
specifically about the Celtics. I think Jason Tatum had a
rough first game. He might not play in this game.
Obviously this is doubtful for Game two, but he had
seventeen in Game one. I think when he does come back,
if it's tonight or if it's Game three, he's gonna
come back and explode for a big offense at night.
(21:03):
So I actually think by the time we had the
next show, he's going to be the leading total point
scorer for the Boston Celtics too the first four games.
Speaker 1 (21:10):
Our next one is a fun one, okay, Celtics hitting
the road, going down to Orlando, some of your old
stomping Browns.
Speaker 2 (21:16):
At one point in time, what percentage of the crowd
is going to be Green teamers? Who's going to be
in Green? I say sixty five percent.
Speaker 3 (21:23):
I'm gonna take the over.
Speaker 5 (21:24):
I think it might be closer to seventy percent because
when listen, the Celtics have huge Celtics crowds down in
Orlando in the regular season, but you know what happens
in the postseason.
Speaker 3 (21:34):
All of them come out and they.
Speaker 5 (21:35):
All get jacked up and they're like, I gotta go
watch this team win a playoff game. So I think
the Celtics are going to be played in front of
a ton of green down there.
Speaker 3 (21:43):
I'm gonna say seventy percent.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
Yeah, and no free ads.
Speaker 1 (21:46):
But there's also quite a few amusement parks in that
area that I think you can combo the Celtics trip
maybe for mom and dad, game parks with the kids
and nice family trips. So green teamers get down there,
we love it. Our final question here, of course, Celtics
all about the three pointers, especially when you're going up
against the team like the Magic where that is not
(22:07):
their game plan. What is the average three pointers that
you see this Celtics team making through these first four games.
I'm going to say it's going to be pretty representative
from game one, so about sixteen, and that's under the
Celtics average for the regular season.
Speaker 2 (22:22):
But this is the defense that they're going up against.
Speaker 5 (22:24):
Yeah, Orlando only allows on average in the regular season.
I think it was less than twelve eleven point eight
or something like that, best in the NBA, So that
is what they want to take away now. At the
same time. That is what the Celtics want to do.
And I believe that the Celtics offense is better than
Orlando's defense, and for that reason, they're going to continue
to pour in three. So my long winded way of saying,
(22:47):
I agree with you, I think it's going to be
right around sixteen, right around seventeen. That's basically what they
were averaging for the regular season. The question that I
have is what's the percentage going to be. Are the
Celtics going to be shooting forty plus percent for the
next few games or is it going to be below that.
We'll have to see, but I do think they're gonna
wind up canning about sixteen a game.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
We'll see.
Speaker 1 (23:06):
