Speaker 1 (00:00):
Coming up on this episode of Celtics Weekly, the guys.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Break another three point shooting record.
Speaker 1 (00:06):
Samhauser has a special request for fans, and we go
court side with Abby Chin for this season's best soundbites.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
All that and more now look up specific marks for different.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
I don't really know, honestly. Like I said earlier, we
got to get the crowd to bark with him.
Speaker 4 (00:39):
I think that'll not only energize him. He's a pretty
energetic person as it is, but I just feel like
a bark from the crowd while he's barking, it's going
to be something special.
Speaker 5 (00:51):
We are here where you, Loup Hornett, and I'm going
to save this right now. If any of you out
there wind up going to TV Garden for a single
Celtics game the rest of the season and Luke Cornett
barks and you don't, we're kicking you out.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
We are kicking you out of the arena. You must bark.
It is a requirement for attending a Celtics game.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Moving forward, All right, puppies, you have your command. Welcome
into Celtics Weekly.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Meganautline here with Mark Demico.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
Can you believe that this will be the last episode
of the regular season.
Speaker 2 (01:19):
Next week, I'm to come to you.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
It's gonna be playoffs, babies, so get your barks ready.
But in the meantime, we've got a whole lot of
news to hit, so let's get right into headline. The
Celtics broke the NBA record for three pointers in a
season against the Phoenix Suns Friday night with one thousand,
three hundred and sixty.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Four made shots.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Peyton Pritchard hit the record breaking basket just under four
minutes into the second quarter, passing the record previously said
by the Golden State Warriors just two seasons ago. Here's
a book visual of how it feels to defend the Celtics.
The main Celtics G League playoffs run, unfortunately, came to
an end Sunday with a one thirty five, one to
(02:03):
nineteen loss to the Ostola Magic in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
G League MVP JD.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
Davison finished the night with thirty four points and eleven assists,
but it just wasn't enough. Kudos to the guys for
a third straight appearance in the G League playoffs, and
we couldn't get through these headlines without highlighting the toughest
guy of the week. Chris dots Porzingis, who left the
Suns game looking like an extra from Fight Club after
(02:30):
taking an elbow to the face.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
KP required stitches, but enjoyed the.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
Crowd support as he walked off to the locker room,
reminding us of another Celtic warrior who had his share
of cuts and bruises.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
Now, Mark, you were the one.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
Who said, as soon as I saw KP with that
blood on his face, I thought of another famous guy,
Kg KG.
Speaker 5 (02:53):
But the interesting thing is that they're such different people
and they had such different reactions. Right Like KG was
bleeding and the crowd was wild and he was like, yeah,
like that warrior mentality. But KP is laughing as he
walks off the court with blood dripping down his face,
and the crowd was enjoying that. So just it's so
interesting see two guys who connect and have connected with
(03:14):
the Celtish fans so deeply, and they're just like totally
different personalities, especially when they're bleeping.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
They get fired up completely differently, and you gotta love it.
KP is a joyful warrior, That's what it comes down to.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Very very different personality than Kevin Garnett.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
We're getting into a lot of personalities on this show
this week, but let's get into some actual basketball with
our plays of the week. These are your highlights, your
top ten plays from your Boston Celtics.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
Starting with number ten, we are starting.
Speaker 1 (03:42):
With Jalen Brown fancy crossover behind the back, goes into
the pain boom, using all his physicality.
Speaker 5 (03:49):
Throwing Nick Richards into the blender. Look at this, throw
them in, turn it up to level three and all right,
see you later.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
Boom.
Speaker 5 (03:57):
Going in for the easy lay of Jaylen Brown with
a beautiful for the rat.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Number nine from the Stay Ready group, you get Tory
Craig elevating for a block boom.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
Love this part of the season. Pretty guys.
Speaker 5 (04:09):
Every time he checks in he reminds me of last
year's number twelve O shapeer set. Nothing but energy from
our guy Tory Craig.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
When he checks in.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
Eight, you get true Holiday with the pretty reverse layup
doesn't go Samhouse and grabs the rebound out to the
corner Office executive shot.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
Level of difficulty on this shot is at ten. Look
at this. He grabs a rebound, backs.
Speaker 5 (04:31):
Up into the back corner, plants his feet and lets
the fire.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
Normal players can't do that great shooters.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
Camp last night against the next KP from the logo making.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
It look easy.
Speaker 5 (04:41):
That was legitimately almost half fort Look at where he
catches this ball, and let's sip fly from kat isn't
even defending him because he's not gonna shoot h from there.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Oh yet he is when you're number seven feet, maybe
it is.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
And then you saw the smile from him.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
Here we have Derek White with the strip and then
look here. I call this s Fooziers rule because everybody
gets the piece, you get four passes or you.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
Even get a look.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
And of course that look is came to be your guys, came.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
For the former.
Speaker 5 (05:10):
We had to throw on it fast forward because of
the amount of passes. But this is the exact type
of basketball you think about when you think about the
Boston Celtics.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
Beautiful ball movement, great play number.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
Five, fast ppe.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
He beats his man and he finds Nnia's tata for
this thing.
Speaker 5 (05:28):
Nothing like a no look pass over the shoulder. Every
time Nania's cata checks in, he gets a dunk.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
Every single game. I feel like it's a guarantee.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
I'm in the Al Horford a proof.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
The message is a proof.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
Number four, jab breaking down and nan or no look pass.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
To Luke Cornett.
Speaker 5 (05:44):
I approve of the rest, not calling an offensive follow here.
I think Jalen might have gotten away with one, but
the pass over the shoulder might have been a little
slicker than what Peyton's was a minute ago.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
Three again against the Knicks, the shot that sent the
game into overtime.
Speaker 5 (06:01):
I may have a problem with our producer who put
us at number three. I don't understand how it's number three.
This is how I felt after the shot, but the
level of difficulty on this look. His shoulders are facing
away from the basket when he steps back, then he
steps to the left, then.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
He drills it.
Speaker 5 (06:16):
Literally one of the most difficult shots I've ever seen
Jason Tatum makes, and.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
That's saying a lot and too.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Baylor Sharman starts this off with his steel and then
another no love pass over to Drew.
Speaker 5 (06:28):
Holiday, and this was just the meat of the sandwich
they he had over the course of a couple of minutes,
actually fifty seconds.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
Within fifty seconds.
Speaker 5 (06:34):
A three, then this, then a three Baylor Shyman showing
us all why Brad Stevens drafted him, and number.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
One he started off the countdown, He's gonna finish it.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
It's JB.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
You think he's losing the ball, but now he's just casual.
Speaker 5 (06:47):
Another logo shot and may have also gotten away with
another opfensive phone Bradley Beal almost gotten knocked over. Bang
a little elbow to the face, Jalen says, Oh, I
got to throw this up and bang. That's exactly what
you want to say, you from Jalen Brown, staying hot from.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
Different Those are your place of the week. Don't go
anywhere because on the other side, we are going court
side with Abby Chin. We're gonna make a case for
Jason Tatum for m VP because.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
It's Celtics Weekly. Where else can you do that?
Speaker 3 (07:13):
And guys, what's going on?
Speaker 2 (07:14):
I think we might be taking the dog.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
What are we.
Speaker 6 (07:17):
Doing right now? To finish with halting?
Speaker 1 (07:50):
Welcome back, thanks for sticking with us through that break.
Now we are going court side with NBC Sports Boston. Abby. Abby,
thanks so much for joining us, and we wanted to
talk to you today because who better to share the
moments from a team with a whole lot of character
than you with your walk off interviews.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
First of all, I.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
Mean, I guess how does this team compare to some
of the teams that you've covered in the past.
Speaker 7 (08:17):
Well, I think, led by Luke Cornette, there is definitely
a lot more humor in this group at this moment.
I think typically at this point in the season in March,
you kind of feel like you're getting to the doldrums
and just trying to get to the playoffs. But we
have had some really fun moments over the last couple
of weeks.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
Right after the Washington game, you asked Sam Hauser about
the board game within the game.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Let's hear his response.
Speaker 7 (08:43):
Yeah, how would you describe the board work tonight?
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Board work was really good?
Speaker 4 (08:49):
I mean it reminded me of like a good Chuck
Cooderie board back home in Wisconsin, like everything you need, cheese, crackers, grapes,
big dip, a little bit of honey.
Speaker 6 (08:58):
That was good.
Speaker 8 (08:59):
You guys didn't see it on right, went just kiss.
That's the best answer. This next one.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
It shows you how much some of these guys love
each other, because we all saw the clip of Christops
Porzingis coming off the court with the blood coming down
his face. Here's your postgame interview with Jayalen Brown following
Porzingis getting that elbow to the face.
Speaker 8 (09:19):
The other night, the other half.
Speaker 7 (09:21):
Of Cookies and Cream, christophs Porzingis, got its pro wrestling moment.
Louke Cornett was trying to end people there in the
fourth quarter.
Speaker 8 (09:28):
How big were the bigs today?
Speaker 6 (09:29):
That's OKP. You know the stitches.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
You know they can't make you any uglier? Dan, was
you already?
Speaker 8 (09:35):
I love the relationship between those two guys.
Speaker 7 (09:37):
I think they're so funny and they just truly enjoy
each other.
Speaker 1 (09:42):
This one's a little bit more serious, but we love
the sentiment behind it. This was you talking to Jason
Tatum after the Memphis game about the mentality that this
team is about to bring into the playoffs.
Speaker 7 (09:52):
You guys made history on this road trip, but you've
now won nine straight. How are you feeling about where
this team is at heading into the postseason? H?
Speaker 3 (10:00):
Great? We trend in in the right direction at the
right time. Hopefully, you know, we get everybody back healthy
and keep this thing going. It's it's almost not a
wolf almost.
Speaker 7 (10:11):
Honestly, I know which you love that mentality, but I
didn't hear it live because I think we were going
there were so many things happening, and then I saw
it later on social media and I was like, yes, Jason,
that's right.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
Let's go.
Speaker 5 (10:24):
How often does that happen, Abby, Because I mean I've
done a few walkofs down on the court, not for
NBC Sports Boston, but like it is hard to hear
because the crowd is so jacked up and excited. Music
is blasting for like setting the environment. How often does
that happen where you actually don't hear what the guys
are saying.
Speaker 7 (10:41):
I mean, not that often, but sometimes and I'll go
back and listen and I'm like, oh, is that what
he said?
Speaker 8 (10:47):
Or I feel like I missed a follow up.
Speaker 1 (10:49):
Big personalities across the board on this team, but the
biggest of all, or at least the funniest, without a doubt.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
Is Luke Cornett.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
Here's you speaking with him after the game in San.
Speaker 7 (11:00):
Antonio and you want to bark before you go bark
us Outtonio.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
God.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
He is so interesting and weird and I'm so happy
you got that out of him. We have that on tape.
Speaker 8 (11:20):
That was just the I thing on the cake too.
Speaker 7 (11:22):
I mean Al Horford had come by earlier in the
interview and barked at Luke, So that's what really sparked it.
But Luke talking about geometry when he thinks of rebounding,
and then he also views himself as an offensive lineman
because they're just so selfless.
Speaker 8 (11:35):
All they want to do is get in there and
do the dirty work.
Speaker 3 (11:37):
You never know what he's gonna say to a t.
Speaker 7 (11:40):
No, you never know what he's gonna say. I was
talking about it last night. I always get really excited
if Luke has a really good game.
Speaker 8 (11:46):
Early because I'm like, oh, do we get Luke? Can
we make it happen?
Speaker 7 (11:50):
One of the days goes off and has a huge
game and I end up talking to them.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
But what I love the most about that particular clip
is that it's not just barking. Luke is barking if
he's having a conversation with you, like.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Wo wo wo.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
Who do you remember when you first interviewed Luke and
thought to yourself, Okay, this guy's he's got a lot
too them, like he is going to hang it up
for the camera.
Speaker 7 (12:16):
I think there was one point last season, maybe it
was two seasons ago, I'm not sure, Mark, do you remember,
But when the cornet contest really started to be a
big thing, and Scout was trying to get it called
the Eclipse, and Luke was like, nah, I'm good with
the Cornet can Test. It's just so funny about it
and so open and joyful about his approach to the game,
(12:36):
but also you can tell while he's on the floor
just how hard he is playing.
Speaker 5 (12:40):
It was actually one of the assistant coaches, I believe
that was actually trying to push a public that we
should call it the Eclipse.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
He was like, no, it's the Cornet can Test.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
Well, Abby, you described them as joyful. I think that's
the perfect way to categorize this group. You know better
than anybody, you are the queen of court side.
Speaker 3 (12:56):
Thank you for bringing it out.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
Yes, thank you so much for all your time talking
to these guys, and we look forward to all the
moments that you have with them through the first round
of the playoffs. Abby Chin of NBC Sports Boston, thank
you so much.
Speaker 3 (13:09):
Thanks Abby.
Speaker 1 (13:10):
Time out for players Spotlight. Let's hear from coach Joe.
Speaker 6 (13:13):
Let's a lot.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
Joe.
Speaker 9 (13:17):
Jason's having his best all round season, leading the team
in most major categories, really doing all the things that
an MVP does. Just from your perspective, its someone who's
around him every day. What's what's the most valuable quality
that he brings set a lots of standout.
Speaker 10 (13:31):
Yeah, I mean I think there's there's a lot of them, right.
I think the first one that comes to mind is
really just the leadership. And you know, he's one of
the guys that sets the atmosphere of the organization. I
think you know, you heard after the Brooklyn game, Uh,
you know kind of what KP said about you know,
he sets the tone from his availability and playing every
night and uh, you know, just his his impact that
(13:53):
he has from a leadership standpoint, and then the on
court stuff speaks for itself. I mean, you know, his rebounding,
his ability to you know, make be a playmaker's potential assists,
He's assist there. So you know, at the end of
the day, only one guy can win it, and I
still think whoever doesn't is still you know, have an
MVP caliber and that to me is what's more important
is how you're able to do that. And you know,
(14:14):
I think that's you know, that's something that he does well.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
You hear coach Joe Mizolla. At the end of the day,
only one guy can win it.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
But Jason Tatum is in the conversation every year and
this is why. And compared to last year, his points
per game about where they were last year, but his
rebounds around a career high, his assists definitely a career high.
And to me, that's what stands out is we know
that Jason Tatum has been the guy that you want
to take the final shot in a lot of these games.
(14:41):
It just saw it against the Nix Senate's overtime. But
the playmaker that he's become, especially working with his bigs,
with christophs Sporzingis, with Luke Cornett and pick and roll action,
he is elevating his game every season.
Speaker 5 (14:53):
And don't forget about the other side of the ball,
because Jason Tatum gets it done on offense, Andy gets
it done on defense, four or one of the top
five defenses in the NBA. So when you talk about
all around basketball and what Jason Tatum brings to t like,
that's how I look at things. How is this person
impacting the game at both ends?
Speaker 3 (15:12):
And Jason Tatum does it every night.
Speaker 5 (15:14):
And when I say every night, I mean every night.
Why do you think he was playing last night in
New York in a game that a lot of people
said didn't mean anything.
Speaker 3 (15:22):
It's because that's who he is.
Speaker 5 (15:23):
He wants to be on the court, he wants to compete,
and you know he's going to play at an incredibly
high level.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
We saw it with thirty two points.
Speaker 5 (15:31):
From him and the most important shot of the night.
Don't question Jason Tatum's clutch gen Jason Tatum has it.
He makes the shots far more often than many of
the other players in the league, and he did it
again last night. That was an MVP moment. I don't
know if he's gonna win it, but that was an
MVP type moment.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
Absolutely, and he heard it in the question there.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
You made the point, Mark, but in the question as well,
which was an excellent one to joke.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
Yeah, great job.
Speaker 1 (15:55):
Taylor snow his availability, Okay, he's going to be one
of the only guys in this conversation who's certainly gonna
finish with more than seventy one games, and he's done
that for four years consecutively. We're just talking about one
season for MVP. But Jason Tatum's availability flies under the
radar way too much. Minutes per game, we're talking in
the thirties every single season. The guy he earns a
(16:18):
little more, do he earns a little.
Speaker 5 (16:20):
More season high? Forty eight minutes last night or forty
seven minutes like he did that in a game that
doesn't matter. So again just goes to say, and by
the way, only him and Sga are star players who
are on a team that's top five in both offense
and defensive efficiency.
Speaker 3 (16:37):
I'll leave it at that.
Speaker 1 (16:38):
Okay, Well, Sga is somebody who we're probably not going
to see for the very far future if we're lucky
for these Celtics. But in our future focus, looking ahead,
final week of the regular season, and it starts off
with the Orlando Magic.
Speaker 2 (16:52):
The Celtics face the Magic tonight.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
And if you see this diagram right here, the Magic
could be who you see in the first round.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
It could be the Hawks.
Speaker 1 (17:01):
You even got as we sit here today on a Wednesday,
you got the heat and the Bulls being a little
feisty in that play in tournament.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
So we'll see for sure.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
But what do you think about the Orlando Magic as
a first round opponent.
Speaker 3 (17:13):
Well, we'll see if it winds up being them.
Speaker 5 (17:15):
It looks like they're going to be the seventh seed
in the East, they would have to have a total
collapse to not wind up being the number seven seed.
In terms of the play in seeding, the eight, nine,
and ten, we don't know what's gonna happen there, Like
those are the ones that are up for grabs. It's
interesting in the East that three through six is actually
pretty much set, Like there's two games between all those teams.
We pretty much know who one through six is going
(17:37):
to be in the East, but it's that playing. We
still have to figure out who the Celtics are gonna
wind up playing. It's either going to be the Magic
who they face tonight. Who By the way, that team
is very talented, but they've got some key players missing
and that's what's kind of been their downfall this year
is the injuries. But you've got the Magic and then
one of those three other teams. We don't know who's
gonna be. But I think we're gonna find out next
(17:57):
Tuesday or Wednesday. We should know pretty quickly whoever wins
that seven eight game winds up playing the Celtics in
the first in time for.
Speaker 2 (18:04):
The next show. So where everyone thanks, we will have
that in.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
The NBA for thinking of Celtics Weekly. There are two
other games, both against the Hornets. If you're using last
year as any kind of barometer for who you might
see play.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
A lot of the starters sat for those final two games.
Speaker 1 (18:20):
But it's such a fun moment for the Stay Ready group.
You've seen Baylor Shireman just grow immensely really over the
entire season, but what we've gotten to see from him
over the past month through March and April super fun
moments for these guys down the stretch.
Speaker 5 (18:34):
Confidence is the most important thing in sports in my opinion,
other than just natural born ability. Baylor Shireman is growing
all of these other guys who are going to be
on the court tonight, by the way, like I'm almost
certain we're going to see a very unique starting lineup
for the Celtics tonight. You might see Tory Craig play
in the four in the starting lineup. But these are
the moments where those guys can grow confidence going into
(18:56):
the playoffs. So when you got guys who are eight, nine, ten, eleven,
twelve in the rotation and they've got confidence going in
the playoffs, that's only.
Speaker 3 (19:04):
Going to help you. Mark.
Speaker 1 (19:05):
We did a show that was on Christmas Day I
feel like it's Christmas Eve over here because we are
so close.
Speaker 3 (19:11):
Also, we're wearing red and green.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
We are wearing red and green, so we're right in
the mood for it. But the playoffs will be here
next week.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
We will be with you Wednesday. Cannot wait.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
At that time will the opponents for the first round
for the Celtics ARC.
Speaker 2 (19:25):
But until then we'll see honestly
Speaker 3 (19:28):
No barking, okay,
