Speaker 1 (00:03):
Brace for Winnings is a production of iHeart Radio presented
by Draftking Sports Book, your one stop podcast for all
things happening on the hardware, and a special edition of
Race for Winnings coming your way. Hello, everybody's Sean Brace here,
(00:25):
and it's special because it's our first episode on all
things handicapping the heartwood both NBA and college basketball coming
your way right here on Brace for Winnings. You'll be
able to get this podcast once a week every Thursday,
moving forward until we crown an NBA champion, this time
(00:47):
coming up over the summer, of course, though, hot and heavy,
fast and furious coming our way. Next will be the
NC Double A champion, and we are getting towards March Madness,
inching closer and close, with only a few regular season
games left, conference tournaments starting next week, a lot to
(01:10):
discuss on the college basketball side of things, and that's
where we're gonna focus today's episode. Once again, Brace for
Winnings will give you the best opinions out there, whether
we're talking about handicap in the games or some of
the big storylines as well, and that's where we're gonna
start today. From the week John Fanto, who does a
(01:30):
number of outlets when it comes to all things college hoops,
whether it's the Big East or College Basketball on Fox
or the Field of sixty eight. In my opinion, one
of the best in the industry covering college basketball. And
he joins me weekly on my radio show, and we
opened up with a tough discussion right from the jump,
(01:51):
and John did not hold back Alabama situation. Of course,
we're Brandon Miller and everything that has transpired over the
last week with us learning new details, and we're gonna
take to get back to Wednesday night when South Carolina
hosted Alabama and whether or not Brandon Miller should have
even played in that game did go on to score
(02:14):
forty one and lead Alabama to a victory. But John
Phantom myself discussed the big picture items when it comes
to all things Alabama basketball in two thousand and twenty three.
The fact is Alabama has embarrassed themselves over the last
forty eight hours with this situation. And you know, guys,
(02:40):
we can talk about what happened with these kids, and
it is terrible and sad and unfortunate and disappointing and
they're needed to be more done about about that. But
we're talking about adults, all right, adults who, apparently, because
(03:02):
there's no other way to to really put this, are
putting the best interest of their basketball team over what
is the right thing to do. And the right thing
to do is not what has happened in this where
things were hidden from the public eye and Alabama was
(03:23):
not proactive, and I don't understand why, because we live
in a world now where everything's going to get out
and so it's disappointing, it's disturbing. And yeah, Oates came
back on what he said and sent his thoughts and
prayers to the family, it was too late for that.
So Alabama totally mishandled this situation. And this is going
(03:49):
to haunt them, it's going to doom them. And there's
no way, there's no way that they win a national
championship now, no way. I can see something of this
severity where it's going to travel with them everywhere they go,
(04:10):
where they'll be able to focus on winning it all.
This is a real, real distraction, it's a real obstacle,
it's a real whatever you want to call it. And
the human life lost is the most important thing. It's
the most important thing. We all want to make that
clear in terms of where Alabama stands institutionally as a department,
(04:34):
as a basketball program, they should be ashamed of themselves today,
well said, I couldn't agree with you more. And I
just want to point out, as you said, we can't
say it enough. Of course, the twenty three year old
young woman lost their life, and that's completely senseless and
it should never happened, and it's just despicable. But here
we are, and now, as you pointed it out, that
(04:56):
we have these adults that are you know, hey, we
got to keep the pedal to the medal here. We've
got a winning program and things are looking for us
right now. And I just don't understand whether or not
I don't believe that that was the right way to
go about it from the jump, John, Like, even in
a best case scenario, I'm painting this rosy picture here.
You suspend Brandon Miller two three weeks ago, whenever the
(05:19):
situation that actually occurred, and at least now you have
some wiggle room if that's the case, if you can
make him come back and play now, he of course
is going to get out there and play. We think
at this point in time, tonight against South Carolina. Not
sure how that's gonna play out, but I think that
that would have been the best situation for Alabama if
they were, you know, up front, and said, hey, here's
(05:42):
what we're going to do. We're gonna suspend him and
as cooler heads prevail. Again, I'm painting a rosy picture here,
but I think that would have been the best case scenario.
Do you agree with that? Or as far as where
we stand right now, he's gonna play. It doesn't seem
like he's gonna miss any time. We haven't heard from
the athletic director. If I'm not mistaken, the president of
the university, If I'm not mistaken, and he is just saying,
(06:04):
you know what, if he's not the only things he charges,
I'm gonna play him. So I guess what I'm asking
long when died, was was this the right approach for NATOATS? No,
none of it wasn't it. It goes beyond natots. You know,
there's a reason why these people are hired at these institutions.
The administrators and the athletic directors and the folks behind
(06:28):
the scenes. They're in charge of this stuff. They're in
charge of the oversight and of course NATOATS is at fault.
Of course he also answers to bosses, and those people
should be held accountable here as well. And I'm not
gonna here's the thing. Here's the thing I think when
(06:48):
you're analyzing this, you know, I think a lot because
I've I've heard a lot of discourse on this. And
I'm not going to act like I know everything that's
going on because I didn't. You know, I don't think
any of us do, even though we've got some news,
we've got the reports, and we've got the oats. Like,
here's the thing, here's the thing. You knew. You had
(07:10):
to know that this was a problem. It would appear
that you tried to cover it up. Then when it
does come out, you chose to throw it under the
rock that you had it under like it. Don't try
to push a mess. I remember growing up right. I mean,
(07:37):
it's a very basic analogy to you guys. My dad
would say, clean up the yard. Have we all been
there when we're cleaning up the yard and we get lazy,
like seventy five percent of the way in and we
like kick some of the malt or kick some of
the leaves, like into a corner and say, yeah, Dad,
it's all done that. They attempted to do that, And
(07:59):
they attempted to do that in a case that's not
cleaning up the yard, in a case where we're talking
about human lives, and I just here's my thought. Okay, Alabama,
they owe more to the player who has now gotten
(08:21):
thrown into this further further, he's responsible for his decisions,
all right, He's absolutely responsible. He made a decision to
assist and provide that gun. But these people are hired
and part of the reason why they are in the
(08:42):
positions they hold is to manage crises, whether that beat
his hand down, a suspension, whether that be to kick
somebody off, whatever that is. And ask yourself this question,
would the kids be playing tonight if he wasn't the
best all around talent in college basketball? And that's where
(09:02):
college athletics, as much as we love them, the idea
and pro sports is this way too. But but college
sports is really a world where you know you're able
to get away with certain things and you can play
and coach and keep doing what you want. Chris Beard
(09:25):
did what he did, fellas I hear it every week.
Now that there's there's schools that want to hire him.
It's gross. It's gross, but it's gonna happen. Um a
coach a couple of years ago. I'm not gonna you know,
you all know who I'm talking about. You know, let's
face it. He ran someone over. Okay, he killed someone.
(09:46):
I'm sorry, but he did, and he coached. He coached
the game the same week. I mean that that's not
the real world, Fellas, that's but that's the world we
deal with here, and in college sports things really get blurry.
It is the true. At we have a fantasy lane.
Great stuff from John there. Now let's slide over to
(10:07):
the games on the court and Joe Tanzy joins me
and we handicap a number of the games that will
be going off on a Saturday afternoon. We also take
a look at some big picture items as far as
the March Madness bracket that will have to be filling
out in two to three weeks from now. We got
conference tournament coming up this following week, so they lot
(10:28):
to discuss in the world of college hoops. But we
open up with the one game that everybody should be
paying attention to today. I think you have to bold
underline italicize everything around Virginia North Carolina, right, I mean,
Virginia's on this slide right now in the ECC. They
no longer control their own fate for the regular season title.
(10:48):
I believe that that's up to Miami and who meet
next weekend. And in North Carolina are they on the bubble?
Are they not? The bubble is just ridiculously soft, which
the bubble gets a lot of fans there every year,
but every year kind of lets us down, like we
kind of know who's actually in and out, and this
year it's remarkably soft. But if you're North Carolina and
(11:11):
you beat the sixth ranked team in the country in
the primetime slot on ESPN on Saturday night, that changes
a lot of things. It changes the perception around your
team and also changes the perception around Virginia. Like we
all think that that Tony Bennett is going to be
fine in March. Ke Hay Clark is one of the
(11:32):
most experienced guards in the country, but they've gone on
a little sludge. It lots to BC during the week,
which is something no team wants to do this time
of year. So yeah, I think that one has to
be Gonzaga Saint Mary's is the big one with two
ranked teams, but at ten o'clock a lot of people
aren't like as in tune with the Gonzaga Saint Mary's
(11:54):
rivalry as they are to a North Carolina storyline. And
I think because the bubble is just a big, a
big pot of at this point, North Carolina can con
separate themselves a lot if they do beat Virginia. As
far as a number is concerned, we're recording this on
Friday afternoon, what do you expect that number to be?
(12:16):
Virginia at UNC A lot to play for, a lot
up for grabs in that conference. UNC finally getting a
victory over Notre Dame, but lost two straight tough battle
against Miami and NC State in Raleigh they lost, which
you don't see that happen often over the past few years,
but that's how that played out there. And then on
the flip side with Virginia, as you pointed out, them
(12:39):
losing to BC. Got to find a way to win
this game. What would you expect that number to be?
Six pm tomorrow tip off? So the sprum was four
and a half first time I met this season and
usually won that game and covered, but I would think
it's probably a little higher just because of North Carolina
has just so all over the place of this season.
(13:00):
You don't know what you're going to get from them,
but they've been kind of around a hovering between a
favorite and an underdog all season. Now, look it is
North Carolina is a home game and Virginia has been struggling,
so maybe that becomes a smaller spread than than I think.
I think Virginia should win the game just based off
(13:21):
the quality of play, but look, March is getting around
the corner, teams get more desperate, so I wouldn't be
surprised if the line ends up kind of more in
North Carolina's favored than we think it might be. No,
you're probably right about that too. They do play better
at home. Their numbers will tell you that as far
as the record is concerned. And the last time that
(13:42):
I think you and I were talking about UNC was
that game against Miami, and we were both scratching our
head where wait a minute, the oddsmakers were giving too
much love towards UNC. I mean they were five and
a half points favorite against Miami and Miami blew them
out of the water. So yeah, it's you'll probably see
something stewed towards UNC's way, even though it probably shouldn't
be all right staying with the card tomorrow, of course,
(14:03):
the dogs, we want that badness right as we sit
at home. We want to see those upsets. I'm looking
for some dogs to play here. And again we're recording
us on Friday, so we don't have the exact lines
in front of us. But Joe, you know, he's got
that nose. He can he can sniff him out. So
I'm wondering as we look at the card tomorrow, and
it has jam packed a lot of top twenty five action,
(14:26):
a couple top twenty five battles. Of course, everything else included,
as far as all of the college, university, all the
programs in action tomorrow. Two underdogs that you are looking
out for an upset where we going, Well, there's no
South Carolina from from Wednesday night, so those ones are
(14:47):
really hard to find. But the one I would look
at first is New Mexico against San Diego State. Now,
the next closed record is a little bit um in
the wrong direction because Jalen House, one of their star players,
was out injured for a stretch of games. He's now back.
(15:07):
Now they Look, they lost to the Boise State on
the road earlier this week, and Boyse is kind of
one of those teams that's that's kind of teetering on
the brink of or are they good and they not?
Can they be trusted in March? New Mexico is a
fun team if you've stayed up late and watched some
of the Mountain West games. They've got a fund a
(15:28):
team that also makes you feel old because Jamal Mashburn
juniors on that team, and I'm sure that makes you
feel a lot older than I do. Shot, But but look,
they beat San Diego State first time out. They had
the start off conference play on the road at THEA
House a arena, which is notoriously one of the toughest
places to play. So I think you have to circle
(15:48):
New Mexico as a as a dog here. But they
went on a really bad stretch of games to start February.
They've lost five out of six. Can they get to
the bubble? I don't know, even though it's so soft.
So maybe this is a springboard game for them to
get into the Mountain West tournament and make some noise
that way. Oh I like that in San Diego State
(16:09):
has won five straight. So that is just right for
the picking right there. So and that's a late one
too as well. So something when you enjoy at ten pm.
All right, another dog you're eyeing up. I'm very biased
when it comes to this, but Arkansas at Bama take
the whole you know, Bama situation out of the picture,
(16:30):
because now that they're back at home, they're very good
at home. But Arkansas, you know how I feel about
muss at the end this time of year, They're a
team that is gonna be frisky, and you know Nick
Smith back in the lineup. They blew out Florida, they
blew out Georgia. Now those teams are nowhere close to
the caliber of Alabama. But if you're Arkansas and you
(16:53):
look at this pummy seven or eight days at Alabama
at Tennessee and you have Kentucky back at home in
States to finish the regular season, you can't find three
better tests in a row to prepare yourself to the
NCAA Tournament. Arkansas is gonna win at least one of
(17:14):
those games. They're just they're too good and beat Kentucky already.
I really do think they can keep it close with Bama.
Maybe cover. I'm not saying win out right, but if
if you're looking at the number and everybody's been banking
on Alabama at home because they've been just so so
good in Tuscaloosa, Arkansas is gonna bring it to them.
(17:36):
They always do this time. Yea, this is the time
of year where must just his teams turn it up
to another level. And you know how much I love
Arkansas this time I have a future on them. But
I look at this spot and like they're going to
have to have a prove it spot in one of
these games. I think the the one of those three
that probably means the most to the national audience is
(18:00):
playing at least really close with Alabama because tennis these
head of struggles and they're getting Kentucky at home and
they already beat him, So I think that might be
a fun little spot for a road dog. Give me
sixty seconds on the Purdue Indiana matchup, of course, revenge
factor here Indiana got the best to Purdue what two
weeks ago. Of course in in Indiana there you go
(18:22):
say that, right, this one being played at Purdue. A
lot of people second guests in Perdue. I happen to
be one of them as well. I don't know if
we're gonna see them go cut down the nets come April.
But it's a team that definitely can get to a
Final four, there's no doubt about that. But this game
Saturday evening, seven pm on Fox. What you read on
Indiana and Purdue, I mean Purdue at home. It's a
(18:43):
pretty unfeatable look that they lost to Rutgers very early
on a conference play at home, and since then, since
that lost to Rutgers, here their home results seventy three,
fifty five, fifty five, seventy seventy sixty one, eighty to
sixty eighty seven, seventy three, and eighty two fifty five,
(19:05):
and all those teams are all their opponents were ranked
inside the Kem Palm top one hundred. They're really good
at home, and sometimes that's just how things go with
these top right teams. They're more vulnerable on the road
and produce shown that losing an Assembly Hall a few
weeks ago, Western losing to Maryland. But for Due at
home is that's been really reliable. All right, Let's keep
(19:26):
it moving once again, full slate of games. Get all
of your action over at Drafticking Sports Book. Take advantage
of that new user promo code. Be sure to use
brace as your promo code and let them know that
you're listening to us right here on a brace for winnings.
All right, keeping it moving, let's talk about the future
here as we are three weeks away, right, I think
selection Sunday is the twelfth, if I'm not mistaken. So
(19:49):
right around that three week mark, your number four, your
number one seeds, all four of them, what do you got, Well,
it's gonna be Houston, it's gonna be Kansas. Alabama ha
to be one of those as well. And your fourth
number one seed is I will give it to Purdue.
(20:11):
I think that's pretty straight forward. Kansas probably should be
the number one overall seed given how impressive their resume is.
It's fourteen quadran wins. No one has more than nine
anywhere else in the country. Alabama and Purdue but fatastic,
and I don't see Houston slipping up at least until
(20:34):
the end of the AC tournament. So yeah, I think
you have four pretty strong teams at the top of this.
Say Purdue loses tomorrow and they don't show a good
faring in the Big Ten Conference tournament, who could slide
in who is on the outside look at him from
overall number one or a one seed. I think the
(20:56):
winner of next week's UCLA Arizona game have to be
considered that. I mean. Now, look, the one thing I
will say is UCLA and USC to this extent, are
both in the second leg of the Pac twelve Mountain Drip,
which is notoriously tough playing Utah and Colorado in the
same weekend because of the altitude. They beat Utah on Thursday,
(21:19):
they played Colorado on Sunday. They get through that unscape,
they play both Arizona schools at home next week. Look
to c LA is a team, they're just out there
on the West coast what he's really talking about. But
I think that UCLA Arizona team winner next Saturday probably
has the inside track if if one of these guys
(21:41):
slip up. I mean, Kansas States very good, but there's
always a chance they can slip up in the Big
twelve tournament. Same thing can be said for Texas. I
think in the Pac twelve you can kind of pencil
in UCLA in Arizona to at least make it to
the semi finals up in Vegas. Tell you what, I've
had success betting on UCLA and against UCLA, and I
got very lucky last night by a half a point
(22:03):
on the road in Utah. Very very lucky. But you know,
those are the breaks. Sometimes you need him in your favor.
Got one of those last night. All right, let's keep
him moving, staying in the future. I got some hypothetical
matchups and JJ and I were talking about this earlier
on Fox Sport traded to Gambler in Philly, and I
tend to believe that Markette is really good. I know
(22:25):
that you know Shaka and that OFFENSIVE was able to
watch him in person when they came to Villanova on
the main line and beat them, and that really impressed me.
They're deep, they're long, they got great guard play, and Shaka,
he's been there and done that, so I won't be
surprised if they go on a run. But I got
some hypothetical matchups I want to throw your way and
just give me just your gut instinct on how you
(22:47):
think this game will play out, if it's an Elite
eight or a Sweet six team matchup, neutral floor. I
don't care to region, I don't care the time zone.
Just you give me your gut instinct. If Marquette in
Miami square off in March madness, I mean, that game
could be in the eighties easily, right with the way
(23:08):
both teams play. Look, I love Miami. There's a secret
about that. Jim Larenega is probably the most underrated coach
in college basketball. No one talks about how this consistently
good his team's been. Miami is prime for another run
in the tournament. I think. But there, they've first of
all been there last year, but also have a ton
(23:32):
of tremendous card play. I mean, I've just just sign
me up for Tyler Cowick versus Nigel Pack and I'll
watch the two of them play against each other. It's
get everybody else around them. That's gonna be if that
were to happen, a fantastic game, that's a that's a
tough one to I feel like that would be a
toss up. I feel like we'd have a lot of points,
(23:52):
but it'd be very close in the end. I think
that that would be a very there but also fun matchup.
So we're taking over one forty seven and a half,
is what you're telling me. If that's the case, If
you're sitting at number one forty seven. Uh I am Look,
let's just say I would probably hit the over on
that up to like I don't know, like misifties or
(24:13):
something like that. Miami can play in some some really
really fun games. Does a team reach the nineties in
that game? Maybe maybe I would lean towards If there
was a team that could do it, it it would be Miami.
And that's not the takeaway anything from Shaka and Marquette,
but Miami's been really impressive and they got it. That's
the thing Miami has too, though, because their defense is
absolutely horrendous, so they have to and the thing is
(24:35):
they have the ability to do that. All right, It's
it's nice for you can pull that out of your back. Yeah,
i'mance in the tournament, all right. Next hypothetical matchup. Love
to get your take on this one. And I was
yelling that I don't think Kansas is getting enough attention.
I know it's really hard. Maybe attention isn't the right word,
but um already wanted you back yet, back to back
(24:58):
just hard to do. So people are just you know,
I'm probably gonna pick against them this year. I don't
know if that's the right call. I could see Kansas
absolutely get into another Final four, and why not cutting
down the nets. Grady Dick is incredible. That kid is
so skilled out there, so smooth and what he's probably
the third best scorer and they're they're starting five. So
(25:21):
for me right now, Alabama and Kansas give me an
a lead eight matchup, Joe, I don't care to bracket,
don't care in the region. Saturday night, all right, prime time,
Alabama and Kansas. Who's winning that game? I would have
to be Inbama. Who because I mean, look at what
(25:41):
and we're comparing, compare Kansas to South Carolina, but look
at what Brandon Miller did against Gigi Jackson the other
night in South Carolina, who's one of the better freshmen
in the country. A lot of length and he was
just blowing right past him. Kansas would be giving up
size to him. That would be tough because you have
(26:02):
just such a dynamic or who can take over a game.
Who's a lottery pick from a team perspective, I would
take Kansas. But when you put a lottery tick on
the floor that is capable of making such a difference,
you kind of have to leave Alabama to be very
close because Bill self would scheme up a plan to
(26:24):
stop him. But man, that Brandon miller forty one point
performance the other night. I know it's against South Carolina,
but it was very impressive in the individual matchup. And
if that's what we're getting in March, Bama's gonna be
very hard to stop. Yeah. I think that's the part
about Bama that I like the most as Miller, because
Kansas can be a little bit inconsistent at times. Its
(26:45):
scoring still really good scoring team, but we're trying to
nitpick here two of the best teams in college basketball,
and I think Alabama has the edge there because they
have the great score. They have the lottery pick player
who can do that for him. Now. Grady Dick is
very good, Jaylon Wilson's very good, but they're not Brandon Miller.
That is I think the X factor in a game
like this, when both those teams very well defensively, it's
just I think that the bit of inconsistency that can
(27:07):
happen at times with Kansas offense that could hurt him
in a game against Alabama. Joe the question that I
would have the follow up on Alabama, and you know,
they got a couple of games here, we got the
SEC tournament. Yeah, Brandon Miller was electric, but Brandon Miller
also did not have to address the media. Brandon Miller
probably won't have to address the media. I would imagine
(27:28):
you can hide him from you know, I don't know
how the media scrums work when it comes to March madness,
but you know, you can make things happen. You can
hide college players. But the problem is his teammates are
gonna have to answer those questions. And I believe, and
again why not? It's the human element. The team definitely
(27:49):
felt like there was something going on in that game
against South Carolina three weeks ago. I asked John Fanta,
who was going to cut down the nets? Just having
fun with a fun conversation on a Friday afternoon, and
he said Alabama would do it. He changed his answer
since this situation has just changed everything for Alabama down
there with Brandon Miller. Of course, we know what we're
talking about there. How concerned are you if you had
(28:13):
a future on Alabama cutting down the nets? That the
whole situation, of course, Brandon Miller handing the gun and
a twenty three year old young lady lost her life,
which is just ridiculous. But bottom line is he's still
out there playing. He's going to continue to play unless
something changes in the police report, but I don't think
it will. How concerned are you that that deal is
(28:36):
going to have a huge impact on the team and
therefore maybe just be a big time hurdle for them
to get over and possibly win it all this year
they closed the regular season. You just mentioned the Arkansas
game this weekend. If they albret at home and they
visit Texas A and M, a game that I think
could be for the SEC regular season title depending on
(28:56):
how things shake out. The common thread of those three
teams is they make you work for everything, like having
an off night against South Carolina in a hostile environment
in Colombia and eking out and overtime win. Is far
different from playing three teams that are in the top
twenty five on kempom. But also if you watch them play,
(29:19):
it's no secret they're incredibly difficult to play against. So
those games will require an immense amount of focus. So
I think from the basketball perspectives, if you're concerned about Alabama,
just watch those three games intently. How they deal with
three tournament caliber teams, How this this entire the situation
(29:42):
with the the SEC regular season title plays out too,
because you're kind of treating this even before you get
into the SEC tournament. Though they're one game up on
A and M right now, and M could slip up

The only time they're gonna beat this season next Saturday
for the regular season title. That's enough pressure for a
team to deal with in its own right. So Holabama
plays in these three games is gonna be very fascinating
because they're the o'bab the three toughest teams to play
against Tennessee. Throw them in the mix as well in
(30:23):
the SEC. But what these these SEC teams have done
is they just played defense shows so well and it
could end up being a different snaker in the NCA tournament.
But if you look at Alabama, I mean, this is
a gauntlet, even though two of the games are at home,
this is a gauntlet to get through just to get
to the SEC tournament. So I think just focus on
(30:44):
how they're playing here and how they approached these games,
and if they're able to pass these tests and win
the SEC regular season title. Out right, I think you
feel a little better than you did watching them play
South Carolina once again. Drafting sports Books where we're getting
