greatly appreciated. Don't do it while you're driving though. Yesterday
(00:48):
I talked about the decision to choose Jesus even if
you're not necessarily feeling like it, and I shared a
personal story about out how on Sunday night, my wife
and I on our birthday, sat down and decided to
read God's Word together although neither of us was really
(01:12):
feeling like we wanted to dive into God's word. The
Greatest Commandment says to love the Lord or God with
all your heart, your soul, and your mind. And in
that moment, we did not want to love the Lord,
our God with all of our mind because we just
wanted to turn it off but we made the decision
(01:35):
and the choice to say no to the worldly attraction
of shutting off our minds and watching TV, which we
eventually did and decided to grow in the knowledge of
(01:55):
our love for our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ. I'm
going to talk about what we studied in Hebrews chapter
five on Sunday night when we didn't really want to.
So hold on tight to that steering wheel. Grab your
favorite drink or a cup of coffee, and let's bring
Heaven a little closer together. I've got my NIV Bible here,
(02:26):
opening up to Hebrews chapter five, and I'm gonna read
right out of the NIV. I love how the NIV reads.
By the way ESV is good, but I prefer the NIV.
It just reads a little clearer to me. And it
starts out as this. It says, every high priest is
(02:48):
selected from among men and is appointed to represent them
in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices
for sins. He is able to deal gently with those
who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself
is subject to weakness. This is why he has to
offer sacrifice, is for his own sins as well as
(03:09):
for the sins of the people. No one takes his
honor upon himself. He must be called by God, just
as Aaron was. So. Christ also did not take upon
himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God
said to him, you are my son. Today have become
your father. And he says in another place, you are
(03:33):
a priest forever in the order of Nochizedek. During the
days of Jesus's life on earth, he offered up prayers
and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one
who could save him from death, and he was heard
because of his reverent submission. Although he was a son,
(03:55):
he learned obedience from what he suffered, and once made perfect,
he became the source of eternal salvation for all who
obey him, and was designated by God to be the
high priest in the Order of Melchizedec. We have much
to say about this, but it is hard to explain
because you are slow to learn. In fact, though by
(04:16):
this time you ought to be teachers. You need someone
to teach you the elementary truths of God's work all
over again. You need milk, not solid food. Anyone who
lives on milk. Being still an infant is not acquainted
with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for
the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to
(04:38):
distinguish good from evil. So there's a lot here to discuss.
I underlined a few things during our reading on Sunday night,
and the first thing that I underlined in Hebrews chapter
five came from verse four says, no one takes this
honor upon himself. He must be called by God, just
as Aaron was. And I think about what that means
(05:05):
in our personal life and what it means to be
called by God. I wonder what it looked like to
be called by God back in the Old Testament, because
they did not have scripture to read. God speaks to
us through scripture. He speaks to us through the truth
(05:27):
in God's Word. They didn't have that in the Old Testament.
So what did it look like for God to call
someone to be the high priest. You would think that
he would have to literally speak to them in some manner,
(05:51):
because that's how God communicated with those in the Old Testament.
And then the next thing I under lined says this
during the days of Jesus's life on earth. This is
in verse seven. He offered up prayers and petitions with
loud cries and tears to the one who could save
him from death, and he was heard because of his
(06:13):
reverent submission. That was my biggest takeaway from Hebrews chapter five,
reverent submission. How do you pray? How do I pray?
Do we pray in a submissive way, with a submissive heart,
(06:38):
with a reverent submission, with an honor to God that
is so honorable that we don't honor anyone else the
same way? Do we pray in a way that gives
God the most glory? Or do we have a list?
(07:01):
Sometimes I feel like I pray with a list, and
I don't always pray with the reverent submission. But you
think about what Jesus did in the garden of Gothsemite,
the reverent submission that he had to pray to God
and say, if it be your will, take this cup
away from me. He prayed it three separate times, if
(07:23):
it is your will, If it is your will. So
when I pray, when we pray, we should always frame
things in His will, not our own will. Because sometimes
I feel like I play a tug of war match
and say no, no, no, me, me, me, And then
I give it to God and I take it back
(07:44):
and I kind of give it to him again. And
what we need to do is let go of the
rope completely and give it to God. And then Verse
eight was very interesting says although he was a son,
he learned obedience from what he suffered, and once made perfect,
he became the source of eternal salvation for all who
(08:05):
obey him. This is the interesting part of Jesus being
both God and being human at the same time. Although
he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered.
The fact that Jesus had to learn obedience when he
was a perfect man is fascinating to me. And I
(08:27):
have a study nos Bible, which is incredible because if
you have questions about something, you can go down to
the study notes and see what it says. So I
encourage anyone listening to get a study notes Bible. It
says this he learned obedience from what he suffered. He
was made perfect through suffering, namely his temptation in the
(08:49):
desert and his ordeal on the cross. Though he was
the eternal son of God, it was necessary for him
as the incarnate son to learn obedience, not that he
was ever disobedient, but that he was called on to
obey to an extent he had never before experienced. The
temptations he faced were real, and the battle for victory
(09:12):
was difficult, But where Adam failed and fell, Jesus resisted
and prevailed. His humanity was thereby completed, made perfect, and
on the basis of this perfection he could become the
source of eternal salvation. So what I take away from
this is that Jesus had to grow in his obedience
(09:37):
because when he was about to die on the cross
and take on the wrath and take on our sin,
that was an obedience that he had never experienced before.
So he had to practice being obedient. So when the
(10:02):
day came where he had to be so obedient or
had to endure death in our sins on the cross,
he could be willing and able to do it because
he had experienced the temptations in the desert from the
evil one. So that's what I take away from that.
(10:27):
And then it talks about the milk and the solid food,
and it compares those who need milk and solid food,
and to be honest, sometimes I think I still need milk,
says in verse fourteen. But solid food is for the mature, who,
by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
(10:51):
I think I can distinguish good from evil, but I
also think that I am not trained to distinguish everything
that is good and evil. I don't think I have
trained myself enough in God's word to recognize everything to
(11:15):
be good or evil, And if I'm being honest, I
don't think anybody has. I think that's when you become
God to be able to understand God's word completely. So
in a way, we are all still relying on the
(11:36):
milk of God's word and not the solid food. Although
there are different steps. You know there's different steps because
when I first became a believer in Jesus Christ as
my Lord and Savior, sure I was drinking milk. But
right now I am way more educated on God's word.
(11:59):
But I don't think I can distinguish everything between good
and evil. So there is some solid food that I
can have. I'm like a six month old baby, where
you start giving them their first food. They can eat
some solids, but they're still heavily reliant on the milk.
So right now, I feel like I'm a combination of
(12:19):
those things because I don't think we can ever grow
beyond the basic truths of God's work, because that is
what we rely on to be saved. So I hope
this Bible study that my wife and I experienced on
Sunday night encouraged you this morning. I hope this podcast
(12:43):
was uplifting and encouraging, and I pray that the Holy
Spirit revealed more and more about our Lord and Savior,
Jesus Christ. Everyone have a great day, and thank you
for choosing Jesus. O.
