Speaker 1 (00:00):
Our next guest takes a gamble on love, and there
is no better place to gamble than Las Vegas. Listen up,
dear listeners, We're about to find out just how lucky
Vegas can.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Be for a Cheatah one day he called me while
he was in Vegas and he was like he just
like confessed he cheated on me. And I was like,
what did you do? And he was like, I like
made out with this girl. It's like crazy situation.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Hi everyone, I'm Shoddy Diaz and I'm Kate Robart and
this is Cheaters and Backstabbers. Today we have a very
great friend of ours, New York City stand up comedian
Betsy Carrol. She's gonna tell us a story of hers right.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
And she's also a software engineer. Oh are you a anabas?
Betsy is like one of those Jill of all trades.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Type of time. Thanks for asking me to do this,
of course, thank you for coming. I do have a
cheating story that was very you know, formative for me. Sorry,
I'll take you back in the day. So this was
in I want.
Speaker 4 (01:04):
To hear those happy days, like the happy happy days
when everything is great.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Yeah, we had a beginning of the relationship. So what
happened was I was in college. I was at Columbia
I League IVY League, baby, and I obviously couldn't find
any suitable men to date there, which my mom was
always mad about. She was like, why can't you date
any guys that are actually already vetted? And I was like,
they're just like they're not good. So I was always
looking outside of school, and I ended up meeting this
(01:30):
guy out. He was the friend of my friend's boyfriend
friend from home, so he was from Chicago. He was
on vacation, just visiting my just visiting New York. And
then on this night out he I met him. We
really hit it off and we like, I think, we
(01:51):
just made out. And then he was like, I'm going
to move to New York and like let's be boyfriend
and girlfriend really right away. And I was like, that's
so cool, that's so like hot. He had like lived
in New York at some point, and he was a
professional poker player, so he was like able to work
from home and at that point, Yeah, it sounded like
a lot of money to me. In hindsight, it's like
he really didn't make you know, there's kind of a
(02:14):
ceiling on that it's like a lot of money for
when you're college age. But I seem like a high
roller to you. But like, actually, this is a bad
career choice. If I had gotten like a normal job,
I could get a promotion. Now I just have to
like he played like twenty hands of poker at once
on the screens, and so he would make like a few,
you know, just always doing the safest move. By the book,
you'll like end up with a little bit of profit
if you just like play it now.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Like a little bit of a gambling addict.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
He like I think he was. But at that point
I didn't like this is cool though, I thought it
was really cool. I thought it was like really smart.
I also thought it was very adult because he was
like he had finished college. I think he was like
a little older than me, and he was. I just
thought it was really cool that he was so like
old were you? I was a twenty one you could drink,
(02:57):
you were at it? Yeah exactly, I could drink since.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
He was probably like what twenty four.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Uh yeah, he was like exactly, he's twenty four. Yeah,
And so yeah, I thought it was really cool. He
got an apartment right in my right by the Columbia
campus and moved in there, and I was like obsessed
with you, That's what it seemed like. But also there
were you know, my friend who kind of introduced us
did like warn me, but she also loved him as
a friend who was her boyfriend's friend. She loved him too,
(03:22):
but as a kind of but she knew he was
like chaotic. But that's kind of why people thought we
were like a good match, where like both like high energy.
He was just really a doting dude. There were other
strange things. He was always talking about wanting to get
married and have kids right after I finished college, which
I like took as a joke because I wouldn't do that.
But then as the deadline started approaching, he started like
(03:43):
really talking about it. It doesn't my graduation, yeah right,
And I was like, I'm not really going to do that.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
So how long were you guys together?
Speaker 2 (03:50):
For like a year? Not that long, but it was
it went kind of quick, you know.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
Like right after you you meet and you meet in Chicago,
and ye know.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
We meet in New York. In New York, I think
we met in the summer before my senior year.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
And then he's like I'm moving to be with you, and.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
He moved right away. Yeah, and he like had all
these screens set up and he had an order.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Collie because he's the professional poker player. He's like, and
you love math.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
So'm I thought it was really smart and cool that
he was doing that. He used to pleasures and crazy games. Yeah.
He used to play in like, you know, kind of
serious like mob games that you need a lot of
money to buy in. Yeah, and he would play in
big tournaments in uh Las Vegas and stuff.
Speaker 4 (04:34):
Vegas can only mean trouble. So here's where the story turns.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
So me, I was seriously in love with him, and
so then there were some like things that were starting
to I was like he was kind of really into
like partying and like drugs and stuff in a way
that I'm not really into. Like one day early on
in us going out, he was like, do you want
some xanax like at a party And I was like,
that's okay, I don't have any anxiety actually, and he
was like, well, that's not why we take it. Were
(05:00):
like partying on Xenix, and I was like, oh, I
don't like me that. But yeah, he used to just
like get kind of fucked up. That was like not
something I was really like that worried about, though, you know,
I was in college people like party. But then one
day I guess we were you know, I think I
don't think we had like any problems that I know about.
Maybe the one problem would be that like wanting to
like start an adult life sooner then later, and wanted
(05:21):
to be like a dad really right away. But like,
I didn't think that was a big issue, but kind
of I kind of thought it was a joke.
Speaker 4 (05:27):
Pick up twenty eight And that's not all Betsy shares
another red flag. Always always always look to your man's friends,
because if their friend is acting one way, you could
probably be sure your man is acting the same way too.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
I did notice that he had like a friend who
would cheat on his girlfriend kind of chronically, and I thought,
you know, that was really terrible. And also my guy
friends in college.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
They would never they all knew, and that guys were
really like complicit, they would.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
They were kind of it was more that they all
knew that was weird to me. They didn't like help
him or anything, but I thought it was like real.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
They were like an influence or something.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
I just think that it's a red flag at Bingo.
That is for sure a red flag. You could just
tell that that's normal to them, you know what I mean.
But I didn't think it was that.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
Well, how did you know that they were cheating?
Speaker 3 (06:15):
Did he tell you?
Speaker 2 (06:16):
You would talk about it in front of me? Even?
And I was like, wait, They weren't trying to like
encourage him to cheat. They were more like, why do
you like let your friend do this? And He's like, because,
like we don't take that relation. We think it's a
bad relationship, Like we don't want him with her, she's
really mean, and like we're just like focused on getting
him out of it and not like giving him shit
for like the cheating. And so that was for me.
Speaker 4 (06:35):
I'm very big on like birds of a feather, birds
of a feather flock together.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
I agree.
Speaker 4 (06:39):
And I also they say, like the five closest people
in your life that you are the average of them.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
It's true. I feel like I always think about that
five for like average, that you're the average of your
five friends, And I'm always like, that's so true for
me because like one of my best friends is the
standup comic. One is a software engineer, one's like a
random like Polish immigrant chef my fiance. I'm like, I
have such a random average, but it does like it
seem to be true.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
You know.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
One day he called me while he was in Vegas
and he was like he just like confessed. He was like,
he fucked up. He cheated on me. And I was like,
what did you do? And he was like, I like
made out with this girl. Was like crazy situation. He
was like in a kind of bachelor party. Like it
was like it was with these boys and.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
You knew who they were or were these the same
it was cheating on their girlfriends.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
It was so it's one of those guys. And so
then it was weird, like he said that they were,
you know, had some sort of an orgy like everyone
like kind of being out. Yeah, the guys too, they
were all like hooking up is what he said. And
him and his friends no, just like groups, you know
(07:52):
what I mean, just like shouldn't know. Why didn't you
go me? I could have came over it, but like
immediately it just gave me a vibe. I was like, Okay,
I realized that they're like on more drugs than like usual,
you know, because otherwise this kind of thing doesn't happen.
And then he said that, so he said, he just
made out with this girl, and I was like, immediately,
I was so mad because I was like, he had
(08:14):
a lot of charm and he was hot when you
got to know him, but he wasn't a looker. And
I knew how it worked on me, which was he
had to be really funny and charming with me for
me to find him hot after a few hours. So
I was like, it's not like if you're just a
hot guy and you get drunk and a girl like
lance on your face. And I was like, also, you
wouldn't have just like made out, Like come on, you
(08:34):
did more or you're addicted it, that's the only reason
it would have been, you know. And so I'm like,
if you already cheated, you would have kept going, like
I would have had more. I'm like, almost like more respect,
like you know what I mean, to.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
Be honest, Yeah, do you immediately feel like he's not
being one hundred Yeah?
Speaker 2 (08:48):
And so I said, I was like, Wow, I know
you're lying. I know you did more. I can't believe
you did that because I just know what's more. And
I was really upset. By I like really even. I
then said, I know that it's more than just like
if you had just like randomly made out with someone
and you were like conventionally hot, I would and you
were drunk, I would forgive you. But I know you
(09:10):
were like actively hunting this girl.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
I wonder if it was like he's just trying to
like spread his seed, because he's like, I'm going to
be a dad one way or another, like somebody, Well.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
There's more so then it turns out then he goes
so then so I said, like his excuse right away
was that he was on a lot of xanax and
that he's like, I have to tell you, I think
I have a xanax problem. I've been taking a lot
of it every day, and because of the cheating thing,
I just like wasn't even listening to that. I was like,
this feels like a weird way for you to try it.
I was like, I thought he was like making it
up almost, and I was like, it feels like you're
(09:40):
trying to like distract and like get sympathy in the
wrong way. But I was so it was amazing. I
was like, you're so dumb for confessing this to me.
While you're still in Vegas, and I have the keys
to your house and I went over there with Al,
my little bff, and trashed it. Yeah, we trashed it.
I had pintings. I took all my paintings. I took money.
(10:02):
We had matching one sees that I had gotten us yikes,
and I chopped them up and like flushed them down
the toilet to like mess up his pipe.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
The City of New York will be sending you a
bill for that.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
Yeah, And so then uh, yeah, he called and was
like I remember he was calling from like he had
like a private plane back. I forget what this thing is.
Speaker 3 (10:24):
Insulted the poker thing.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
Yeah, it was like a poker like perk. And he
was kept calling from there, and I was so like livid.
I had already left his house, but I like so wanted.
I thought I would never speak to him again. That
I was like, that would be the best revenge. But
then he was like, no, I really want to speak
to you, like please, And I was like, actually, you
can come over and speak to me under one condition
(10:46):
if you let me punch you in the face. And
he was like okay. So then what happened was he
came over to my dorm apartment. It was like a
dorm with like six girls in it, like an apartment
with six rooms. And we're in my room and I'm
getting I'm like meeting a full story. He showed me.
He showed me the picture of the girl and then
and I see, showed you a picture because I asked
(11:08):
to And what was it like on Instagram or Facebook?
A Facebook?
Speaker 3 (11:11):
Oh yeah before it back in the day.
Speaker 2 (11:12):
Uh huh and then uh he And I was like,
and you're saying that you didn't like that, you just
made out you didn't like even do third base.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
I was like, really, was that disappointing?
Speaker 2 (11:24):
No? I just didn't believe him. And I was like,
I was like, I don't believe you. I know that
you did more, and since you're not, since you're lying
about it, I'm gonna message her right now and asking.
He was like, okay, I did more, and he said
it was like selling third base. And then right after
he admitted it, I just punched him right in the belly.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
So your take away from that time, like what do
you think?
Speaker 2 (11:46):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (11:46):
Yeah, sorry, let me Now you're in such a happy relationship.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
So then so yeah, then I did end up He
ended up wanting to like earn back trust, and I
said he could do that if he like did certain things,
including doing my laundry for consistent amount of time I'm
like a month, and throwing me a big party for
the for my graduation. He agreed to all this, and
this was going to be in May, and then I
called my mom, who's a sex therapist, and told her, yes,
(12:12):
you would love her. She does this show now with
Me and Kate where she gives second advices, the Mermaid
themed sex therapy.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
Comedy comedy show right in there sex advice.
Speaker 2 (12:21):
Slippery win well. But so basically I called my mom
and told her this scenario and she was like. At first,
she was all like with me being like tough on
a cheater. She's like, he's already done it. You've been
together less than a year, Like he's probably gonna cheat
on you, like this is probably good, like good that
you're like ending it. And then I told her, well,
I'm I'm going to end it, probably, but I'm still
going to make him do my laundry for the next
(12:43):
few months, which he started to do, and then throw
me a big party at the Standard hotel. And then
I told my mom that and she was like, this
is like sick. You actually can't do that. You have
to choose to forgive someone or just not. And I
was like, wait, she's right. I'm like the monster now
because he's trying kind to get forgiveness back. And I'm
actually secretly at that point, I don't even think I
(13:04):
was planning to forgive him. Yeah, I think I was
trying to. Yeah, I was trying to fuck with him
because it really hurt me that he did. That. Ended
up still, he ended up trying to get me back
a little bit more by buying my paintings from like
a painting.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
Like art show thing and then did he like buy
all of the paintings. But this guy did not stop
with just doing the laundry to come clean. He upped
his game and spent a major amount of money on
Betsy's paintings.
Speaker 3 (13:35):
To try to win her back.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
I don't know, he did buy like it was silly.
It was like I remember it was a silly thing
where I was like, I can't believe someone bought this
painting for this price because I put it up for
the I like didn't really want to sell the painting basically,
so I.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
Does not want to sell her paintings.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
I tried to do yeah sometimes actually so yeah, so
allows me how much of painting is I'm like fifty
thousand dollars because I don't want to sell it. So
I did something like that and he bought it so
and I thought it was an anonymous person buying it,
so it was like really pumped. I was like, Wow,
my art must be good.
Speaker 3 (14:04):
But their complicated relationship did not end there.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
So then he was kind of like following me around
a bit, and he showed up at my parents' house.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
Stalker.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
Yeah, he was like a little bit. Today we would
consider this scary, but I think back then it was
more like also, like guys are trying, yeah, and that's
what he was trying to do, I think. But then
it got to a point where I was like, you're
actually kind of spooking me out because he was like
hanging out outside of I remember where I was dog
sitting once for like hours. Then I came out and
he was still there, and I was like, oh my god,
you're like actually like a stalker. And he was like,
(14:36):
if you tell me to move on right now, I
will just move on. Because they made gambling like online
illegal in the States. So I was singing about moving
to South America and I was like, do that, do that?
And then he literally moved the next day and immediately
got a girl pregnant by accident. And now they're married
with multiple kids and I think they're very happy. Yeah,
so it all worked out in South America. I think
(14:56):
they lived there. Yeah, fun less I heard, but I
think that they. I think they and your like multi house,
you're happily engaged. Shot.
Speaker 1 (15:03):
Yeah, so finally you got your happy ending.
Speaker 4 (15:07):
And guess what she really cashed in those chips because
she's actually getting married to her new man in Vegas.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
Way to rewrite that storybook ending.
Speaker 4 (15:17):
Speaking of ending it, we are going to have to
do Oh sorry that no that here. This was so
great and I think I'm so happy you're in this
great relationship now.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
And well, yeah, you know, I think I think it's
important to listen to this story because you know, if
someone is feeling like someone is cheating on them, it's
like basically, leave them, let them go to South America
and marry somebody else, and then you get engaged too.
Speaker 4 (15:42):
Yeah, and also really cross to you for trusting your
gut and knowing he wasn't honest.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
And shout out to your support, syst in your mind.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
I know, I'm so lucky everyone was there and yeah,
that's been there for me for so many different.
Speaker 3 (15:56):
Brankops and they will keep being there for you.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
Absolutely, Betsy.
Speaker 3 (16:00):
Thank you, Betsy.
Speaker 1 (16:02):
I've Sharon, excuse me, I'm Shoty Diaz and I'm Kate
Robarts and this is cheaters and we'll.
Speaker 3 (16:08):
Try that one more time.
Speaker 4 (16:10):
It was so good to have you, Betsy, and I'm
Kate Robarts and I'm Shoty Diaz and this was another
episode of cheaters and backstabers
