Speaker 1 (00:00):
Commencement Speeches for the Class of twenty is a production
of I Heart Radio. Class of Parents, Faculty, rising graduates,
Welcome to commencement. You made it. This year is a

(00:22):
little different, a difficult time to graduate because the traditional
graduation day has been put on hold. So we're bringing
it to you wherever you are, because this is still
your day, your moment. And now put your hands together.
It's time to be inspired. This year's commencement speaker the
one and only Mary J. Blige. Yea. In this noisy

(00:55):
world as we know it, fell asleep, restless eyes Blincoln.
Not many people on the street. People are dropping like flies.
This is deep, the end of the world system as
we know it. Things have changed, things are strange, mind blowing.
It's definitely showing a renewing of the time, a sign
that we have to be still for a little while,

(01:16):
and a trial so great. We can't let our circumstances
dictate who and what we are. These hard and uncomfortable
times do not define our identity. The only thing a
trial like this can show us is what we're made of,
and you are everything, amazing and phenomenal. It's not about
a perfect performance. Put us sincere, heart, drive, determination, and strength.

(01:41):
This pandemic has put us in the realest place we've
ever been in our lives. It has made us face
things we never thought we'd ever have to face. It
has made us see that we have no control over anything.
It has ended lives, families, marriages, and businesses. But at
the same time time, the quality of life is being restored.

(02:03):
The earth is getting to break it needed. Families have
been brought back together. Patience is being developed. Entrepreneurship and
financial freedom is fresh and heavy on so many minds.
Self love is growing deep inside of us. If in
God we trust, our priorities are being set straight, our
characters being developed. We're starting to understand that we really

(02:24):
didn't need everything we wanted. Old things and always must die.
New life will arrive from inside of us again. If
in God we trust through this trial, true kings and
queens will arise. Humility is being born inside the cocky
godly behavior is being squeezed from our bodies. People are

(02:46):
being forced into the light and a new dimension. We
had to be reminded that no one is innocent. Too
much dark energy. This ain't a new fight, a spiritual war.
That's what they're saying, So get your head together if
you plan on staying in on planet Earth. I think
first before you speak negativity. Karma is real. Look at

(03:06):
our reality. This delay in life is to get us refocused,
a restart button and a second chance. This setback is
a setup for a speedy and aggressive comeback. But we
had to slow down to receive this amazing gift and
blessing called more time. Time was flying, but not anymore.

(03:29):
This is what was needed to prepare us for the future.
This is prayers answered. But now we learned the hard
way that we all are equal. Living in the middle
of this movie called the Plague, I pray there's not
a sequel. We're all in this together and we're going
to get through this stormy weather. No money or status
can make things better or worse. He without sin cast

(03:51):
that stone first. We all should appreciate our lives today,
and we really need to listen to the words that
Bonald said, one love, one life. When there's one need
in the night, we have the right to be healed,
So don't give up the fight. Prayer, love and wisdom
will send that plague head first back to his grave,
back to Hell where it belongs. Time for us to

(04:13):
sing a new love song about the love for our creator,
praising the most high, love for each other, love for
our brother, love for our neighbor. This is a scary
time for all of us, but if we don't confront
the things that scare us the most, we won't ever
earn our wings to fly so gracefully like an eagle
through the sky as iron, sharp as iron. Use this delay,

(04:36):
this moment of stillness to sharpen your mind, your talent,
your swords. Stay focused. When the time comes, go out
there and get what's yours. Congratulations to the class of
When we overcome this, may the rest of be a
blessing to us all. M M. You can find a

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
