A twenty five year old man in Florida Derek Young
faces serious charges after the tragic death of a one
year old girl left in his care by his girlfriend.
Young allegedly claims that the child's fatal injuries occurred while
he was quote playing with her shortly after smoking marijuana.
On Monday. Young was arrested and charged with murder during

(02:58):
the commission of aggravating child abuse, as well as cruelty
to a child through aggravated battery. According to court documents,
the Tallahassee Police Department reported that around nine am on Monday,
officers were called to a home on Saxon Street regarding
an unresponsive child. First responders arrived and immediately began performing

(03:19):
life saving measures on the toddler, who was pronounced dead
shortly after their arrival. While the case initially started as
a routine death investigation, detectives quickly identified signs of foul play,
and autopsy revealed that the child had sustained severe injuries,
including multiple impacts to the head from a closed fists,

(03:40):
which ultimately led to her death. Investigators later discovered that
Young had been responsible for the child's care the previous night.
The autopsy findings indicated that the girl suffered forceful impacts
to her head and face, resulting in brain hemorrhaging and swelling.
This contributed to her death. Additionally, she had an acute

(04:02):
fracture in her left femur, which medical professionals noted would
have caused significant pain and hindered her mobility. During a
posts Miranda interview, Young initially denied harming the child. However,
after being confronted with details of her injuries that suggested abuse,
he became emotional, expressing remorse for the incident. He eventually

(04:23):
confessed to striking the child on her head and face,
and agreed to demonstrate the violent actions he had taken.
According to the Affidavid Young used a closed fist to
hit the child's head multiple times and explain that he
had been feeling stressed and sleep deprived while caring for
her and her brother. He provided a troubling rationale for

(04:44):
his injuries, claiming that he had merely been playing with
the girl when he struck her in the head, saying
that he tends to want to play rough after smoking marijuana.
When questioned about the girl's femur fracture, Young allegedly admitted
to hitting her thigh wis with his fist after the incident,
he left the child lying on the bed beside her brother,

(05:05):
returning later to check on her for a heartbeat. Realizing
the child was unresponsive, he called nine to one one.
Despite admitting to causing the injuries, Young insisted that he
did not intend to kill the child, claiming he was
not overly forceful in his actions and that he was
unaware that his blows could lead to death. Young is
currently being held without bond at the Leon County Jail

(05:28):
and is set to appear in court next week. For
