Speaker 1 (00:00):
Crime Alert hourly update, breaking crime news Now.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
I'm Nicole Parton. Almost two decades after Doris World was
tragically shot and killed in Coffee County, Georgia, her husband,
John Warrel, has been arrested on multiple charges, including malice murder.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation made the announcement revealing that
John Warrel was apprehended in Missouri, where he currently lives.
(00:25):
He is now awaiting a court hearing to decide if
he will be extradited back to Coffee County. Authorities have
stated that Warrel is facing four serious charges, including malice,
murder and conspiracy to commit murder. For Doris Worrel's family,
this arrest represents a long awaited breakthrough in a case
that had grown cold for years. Leanne Tuggle, Doris's sister,
(00:48):
expressed the emotional turmoil the family has experienced throughout this ordeal.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
It was a roller coaster ride.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
It was up and down, up and down. I was
very stunned when I got the news yesterday. Why would
he pick up his family and move and why would
he not let us know his location when he moved
out of the country. Things like that didn't add up.
So yeah, the suspicion grew at the time of her death.
(01:18):
Thirty nine year old Doris was found shot in the
recreation business she operated with John for many years. Tuggle
never suspected her brother in law, who is the father
of doors three children. However, her suspicions began to rise
when John relocated his family out of the country and
kept his whereabouts hidden. Why would you move out of
(01:39):
the country and relocate, she said, was the question the
whole family had. While the arrest brings a measure of
relief or Tuggle, she recognizes that the journey towards justice
is far from over. I feel like we're on this
right path. We have a long way to go, she said.
Tuggle fondly remembers her sister as the sweetest person anyone
would have known. In a scheduled news conference on Friday,
(02:02):
officials from the GBI and Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney's
Office will provide further information about the case. John Worrel,
now fifty eight, is facing charges that include malice, murder,
felony murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and aggravated assault following
the death of Doris, who was shot nearly twenty years ago.
(02:23):
The murder took place in September two thousand and six
at John's sports park in Douglas, Georgia. Initially, investigators believed
John was a grieving husband and that Doris fell victim
to a robbery or a retaliatory act after an incident
at the business. However, the investigation continued, it became clear
that the situation was much more complex. It was discovered
(02:47):
that the couple was experiencing marital difficulties and that John
was involved with their eighteen year old nanny, who had
been living with the family for a couple of years.
Fearing he would lose custody of his young children, John
allegedly devised a plan to kill his wife Doris. He
enlisted the help of Glideon Rodriguez and Brandon Cage, who
(03:07):
were initially arrested for conspiracy to commit murder. However, due
to insufficient evidence, those charges were eventually dropped. After Doris's death,
John moved to Florida and later to Costa Rica, where
he was joined by their nanny after she was deported
from the US for withholding information about the murder. Together,
they raised John and Doris's children. After the romantic relationship
(03:32):
between John and the nanny.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
Ended.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Detectives pursued her in Costa Rica, hoping she might divulge
crucial information now that there was a breakup. She ultimately cooperated,
providing the necessary testimony that led to John's arrest in Missouri.
Coffee County Sheriff Fred Cole emphasized that this case has
always remained a priority, saying this case was never forgotten.
(03:56):
While the journey has been long and frustrating, we never stopped.
Justice may be delayed, but it is still justice, and
today we honor Doris and her loved ones with this
long awaited breakthrough. Officials also hope this case serves as
a warning to other murderers who think they can evade justice.
The sheriff said, even though it takes his time, we
(04:17):
will find you. Justice will win. John Worrel has waived
extradition and is now being held without bond at the
Coffee County Jail. More crime and justice news after this.
The father of a Texas high school student who was
fatally stabbed by a fellow student during a track and
(04:40):
field event in April is expressing his anger toward the
school district for permitting the alleged attacker to graduate. School
officials have clarified that the accused, eighteen year old Carmelo Anthony,
will not be allowed to attend the graduation ceremony, despite
the fact that he will receive a diploma. Reports from
CBS News Texas indicate that the superintendent of the Frisco
(05:04):
Independent School District has confirmed this decision. Following the tragic
incident where seventeen year old Austin Metcalf was killed. The
Next Generation Action Network has stated that Anthony, who maintains
a three point seven GPA, has fulfilled his graduation requirements
and he will indeed graduate from Frisco Centennial High School,
(05:26):
though he will be barred from participating in any graduation festivities.
In response, Austin Metcalf's father, Jeff, has vocally opposed the decision,
even following a complaint with the Texas Education Agency to
challenge their decision. Jeff also shared his frustration with CBS
News Texas, recounting his attempt to meet with FISD Superintendent
(05:48):
Mike Waltrip to discuss Anthony's graduation, only to be turned
away due to the need for an appointment. Quote. I've
been stonewalled. It's disheartening, he stated that he had been
following the proper procedures to schedule a meeting with the superintendent.
The first degree murder case against Anthony, stemming from the
April two incident where he allegedly stabbed Austin during a
(06:12):
dispute overseating, has turned into a politically charged issue. Ker
A reported that a group named Protect White Americans protested
Austen's death, labeling it an act of racial violence, a
claim that Jeff Metcalf opposed during a rally at the
site of the stabbing. Tensions escalated further when Jeff attended
(06:34):
a public event where Anthony's parents were speaking, leading to
his removal from the venue. Superintendent Waltrip has previously attempted
to address misinformation regarding the case. In an email sent
to the Centennial High School community, he clarified that no
student found guilty of a serious felony would be allowed
to partake in graduation ceremonies. The stabbing incident, which occurred
(06:58):
when Anthony allegedly took another from his backpack during a
confrontation with Austin over a seat at a track meet,
has sparked widespread attention. Anthony's attorney has claimed that his
client acted in self defense, while an Affidavid reveals that
Anthony admitted to police quote, I'm not alleged I did it,
explaining that he felt threatened during an altercation. An eyewitness
(07:22):
reported that the conflict arose when Austin asked Anthony to
move from a tent designated for their high school track team.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
How could a beautiful, young first grade teacher be stabbed
twenty times, including in the back, allegedly die of suicide? Yes,
that was a medical examiner's official ruling after a closed
door meeting. He first named it a homicide. Why what
Happened to Ellen Greenberg? A huge American miscarriage of justice.
