I'm Nicole Parton. The US Supreme Court has issued a
blow setback for Karen Reid by denying her request to
dismiss two of the three charges against her in the
murder trial concerning the death of her boyfriend, Boston police
officer John O'Keefe. This ruling allows her second retrial, which
is under way, to proceed. Last year, Read's first trial
(00:26):
ended in a mistrial when the jury was unable to
reach a consensus on all charges. She subsequently appealed, arguing
that the jurors had previously indicated a willingness to acquit
her on two of the charges, asserting that her retrial
would constitute double jeopardy. Earlier this month, Justice Brown Jackson
(00:46):
denied an emergency motion from Reid's defense team to delay
the second trial while her appeal was being considered. In
the ongoing retrial, jurors visited the Canton residence where John
O'Keeffe was discovered fatally injured, although Reed did not accompany them.
To ensure Reed's right to a fair trial with an
unbiased jury, Judge Beverly Cononi, who also went to the
(01:09):
crime scene, mandated that media representatives maintain a distance of
at least one hundred yards from the jurors during the visit.
She laid out the rules before they left the courthouse.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
