suffered from gunshot wounds. Prior to the police arrival, thirty

children's father, forty year old Maurice Wayne Bright Junior, stated
he was outside grilling when he heard a disturbance and
rushed inside. Goodrum and Bright then transport the children to
a nearby hospital, where they informed a medical staff that
the other child had also sustained a gunshot wound. Both

boys remain in the hospital at Arnold Palmer Hospital, currently
listed in critical condition. Investigators revealed that Goodrum said she
may have forgotten that she left the gun under the
couch cushion during the night when she was drinking, possibly
leaving it there where her children found it the next morning.

At the time of the shooting, there were three additional
children present inside the home. As reported by NBC News,
Goodrum and Bright were arrested and booked into the Orange
County Jail. Based on jail records, Goodrum faces two counts
of child neglect resulting in great bodily harm, and Bright
has been charged with firearm possession as a convicted felon.

Both are being held on a ten thousand dollars bond.
As reported by WFTV, neighbors felt both heartbreak and anger
over the situation.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
Terrible, It's terrible. It's so sad. My parents are so
irresponsible with their firearms. Could own a gun. It's okay,
you have the right to, but be responsible. Be responsible
a es put it where it belongs, put it away,
put it in safe and as the kids get older,
you tell them, you know, you don't touch this, you
don't get near it, but you have to keep it
in a safe place.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
Florida laws mandate that parents with children under sixteen years
old and the home must properly secure handguns. The law
requires firearms to be stored in a locked container or
secured with a trigger lock to prevent unauthorized access. The
Orange County Sheriff's office confirmed that the state's Department of
Children and Family Services is involved in the children's care,
(02:42):
but Bright may retain custody of them if he posts
bond for his release. More crime injustice news after this
