(00:44):
Together they drink it up with some of the biggest
players in music and sport. You know what I mean?
The most professional, unprofessional podcast. This is drink ship Radar.
Every day is New Year's e. Hey, Segrega Savva is
your boy? This DJCE motherfucking podcast right now and right now,

(01:13):
I'm so excited, not because these people are my friends,
but before these people were my friends, I knew who
they were doing. I've seen what they were doing. They
are the people who edited, who architected the magazine business.
Everybody bit over their blueprint after they made it, they

(01:34):
tried to recreate it. These guys has been down for
twenty years or so. These guys have been doing it,
formed it. If you got four mics, you went gold instantly.
Ship was called the classic. If you got five mics,
you probably went platinum instantly, but your ship was called

(01:56):
the classic. Around days, we don't have no type of
system at all. Your album just come out and as
long as to do with purple hair and dreadlocks say
your ship is good, you might work it. This is
not back in the days. Back in the days, it
was hard. Back in the days, you had to hit
the chickling circuit. Back in the days, you had to
do what you had to do. And if you had
to get on this magazine, you had to be privileged
to be on this magazine. No knocking nuts. The nuts

(02:18):
was making this magazine. Right now, we're talking about the
co owner of the founders excuse me, let me correct me.
Nothing the founders of the Source magazine right now in
the house. We got Dave Zeno make something I want

(02:39):
to get straight to the points. You know. One day,
me and Ja Rule was on the phone, Reular me Rule.
We are like the three of me goes. We're like,
we're like the first take of hip hop. We we
we were going that. Yeah, yeah, I mean me, Me
and me Ji Roule And I said, like Ja Rules said,

(02:59):
he said, I don't give a funk about the mic system, right,
You remember he said that? And I said, that's because
you only got three mikes. You remember that. But but
but I've always got four mikes. I always loved the
mic system. The mic system is will help make my
career make some noise for that whold on the first

(03:22):
time you called me up, you called me a backpack wrapper.
First of all, I cared about the first he said
that you thought that I was the one that didn't
give you one and a a half. Yeah, and I'm gonna
let it be known right now, right here, right here,
all right, and this is this is like, we have
no reason to lie. I can't do that as much

(03:43):
as I want. But you don't say that. You come on,
so you told me that you thought I was the
one that was that thought anything. I thought at one
point that if the source anything that was bad in
the source, Um, I thought that you had something to
do with the bad part. And I thought, Dave, no

(04:04):
know what you thought that I rated the Mic System.
I thought that you rated the Mic System any bad
article thing. I thought it was the straight for all
artist because Price said the same thing. And you know
what I'm saying, first time I met him, if you like, yeah,
I never ever by the way, I never ever ever

(04:25):
ever gave anybody Mike but set now you know, get
into it. No, no, I'm just saying other than the
situation that happened with you know what I'm saying the
source myself and emin Now you know I'm saying, that
was the only time the MIC System like I kind
of I kind of put my authority, but even part
of my way. But wait, that's that's that's that's that's
all the other hundred and ninety covers and Mike's and everything,

(04:49):
I never had nothing to do with it. Like that's
a back round meeting of editors and people up there,
and I never was once ever in any of those meetings.
But even yeah, no, but even still to this day,
do you not realize how important the Mike syster was
I mean, I remember you was telling me like, yeah,
like I was. I was bugging that I was explaining
to you. I understood it, but didn't I didn't feel

(05:11):
it like y'all did. Wow. Wow, how about you dave you?
You me and you want the same page that Mike
system and a lot to the culture. I mean, you know,
we we serious. You know it was something that the
staff took seriously. You know the authenticity of it. So
you know it meant a lot. You got some good ratings,
got some great grating, keeping keeping real with me. I

(05:31):
hadn't tell you rule just because you've got three Mike's job,
that was your problem. Let me play devil's advocate. Alright,
but what's the my system of of of some people
who might and especially as rap started territorializing, meaning Houston
had its own salad Bay Area had and some sound Okay,
if you got a bunch of people up in the
office that not used to these sounds, and how New

(05:53):
York and how can they really rate your ship properly?
And now that's that's number one? Then number two? Right,
the business side of the game. There's two sides of
the souls. There's business and its editorial and you're the
lady childs are busy for getting technical no no, no,
no no. But you're the label and your artists and

(06:13):
you're paying the advertising for your artists, right, but then
editorials hitting you off for two and a half mics
within that Now what now? Now? Now? What now? Now? Now?
What do we do? You know what I'm saying. So
it wasn't always as you know, Um, I think like
what it was? You know what I'm saying. People people
have different perspectives on things. My thing is like, you know,

(06:36):
if you've got a song and you believe in it,
then okay, that's great that other people can that you
would want other people to rate it. But when you
think of again, it's just these are just human beings
and people like you are to rate something to say
you like it or not. No, But I mean the
times have changed. But back then, um, I think you
got you guys. What did they say that was the
hip hop Bible? Yeah? I understood it through the head bible.

(07:00):
I mean that did you did you feel like, you know, accomplishment?
People called it the hip Bible? Not I mean it
felt good, but I was always striving to keep going
to bigger thing. It wasn't that stopped to the source
was start. I remember my first like Sauce I actually bought,

(07:25):
like I had other source magazines, but the first Sauce
I actually bought was the Massive Phill cover. I believe
that's the cover where now it's got five mics. Correct
when you say massive massive, when I say Massive Hill,
it was I meant Gang Star and uh a d
Man And that was that was the issue coogle that

(07:46):
has Can you google that? Let's see if that's the issue,
because you know, I don't we want to give out
correct information. But that was my first source. I was
in jail, and it meant so it meant I can't
say it so much more than me because I would
come home and hip hop kids will have the issue
the same way. Well, I just want to convind you
guys for making So did you know what you guys
were doing when you make? Because he's you're from d C.

(08:08):
Correct day and then you're from Boston. So how did
how did your first link up to you already had
the source out there or it was something y'all came
over together. He was in Harvard Harvid. Let's make some
noise to day being in Harvard, you already already sold,
was already that I was on Harvard Street was head

(08:31):
X all right, that's want to trust about so great?
So that's why I might look it makes sense for me.
Ship the ship Google yours my first, that's my first.
But um you so Harvard is in the hood. How
the hell I'm saying Harvard? And because the schools in Okay,
it's in Cambridge. I started a radio show, hip Hop

(08:53):
to Mike, hip Hop radio show there on the Harvard
radio stage. Give give David the drink, give another trick,
ben Zeno and Dave. They are my friends. You can
tell they my friends. They dugged out bottles of Armadale.
It's not the Rocker brother no more. It is now
hip Hop Weekly sponsored. These are my friends. I'm not

(09:17):
We're gonna get you a love stories thinking there's a
lot of that man. We got family, the family like
excuse people saying Frances brothers both for the man. That's right.
So how does the Harvard guy and the way you
for I'm from Roxberry, Dorchester, Massachusetts. How does the Harvard
guy look up link up with the Roxberry dorstes that

(09:38):
this is crazy? He was doing that. He was doing it.
The Harvard thing. I had a grouped the Almighty saying
Harvard like his life, Harvard, Yeah, but don't see the
Harvard things nigs in Boston. Harvard was just over there
with the police setting white people. That's when they everywhere
else people are trying to get understand that. Yeah, prestigious,
you know what I'm saying. Better the number one rap

(10:01):
group up there in Boston. Excuse me. Yeah, managed already,
but feeling different. So I went out to one of
the shows. That's why. Just before that's when we first met.
I went out to one of these shows they were performing.
I went out and introduced myself and told him about

(10:22):
my radio show. I was hosting the show Street Beat,
Go Go, Dave, you know, come on up. I want
y'all to come, you know, to an interview up on
my radio. So that's how we met, and then we
just started a Yeah, I'm not gonna lie. Davis Davids
the blackest white person. He's definitely like everybody actor. I
don't even I've never looked at them. I know that

(10:44):
it just as black as me. I'm not black. Let's
make a man think he's gotta start clapping man stop
having a conversations made me watch y'all. But then but
then we ended up linking up and like, yeah you
got radio station. You said that, and my DJ from
me from the artist Soul ended up spending on his

(11:07):
two times Yeah, okay. It was a station for classical
music and Dave Man get some hip hop on it.
So Jeff went up there to be as d J.
Jeff two times up Jeff two you know what I'm saying,
and then you know what I'm saying. And then yeah,
then then from then we just started linking up. You know,

(11:28):
I started, I started working with him and in the group.
So I'm gonna get I'm gonna direct this question towards you. Now,
I know Benzine, I don't know how smart he is,
but the average person don't see that. How did you
see his genius day? I appreciate that, you know, I mean,
it's just always been a click from I mean beginning.
It wasn't later on. I mean, of course it grew

(11:51):
and it evolved over time, the relationship, but there was
just you know, there was just something there, you know,
that's kept us together all these years. I Mean, there's
definitely a respect man, he's your brothers man. He's a
he's a brilliant, brilliant person all the time. And you know, um,
when you got how did you know? How did you

(12:16):
know when you met him that this is a guy
you're gonna partner off with? Like it was that the
first intention, Like hell no, Dave, Dave was just cool.
We used to go to Harvard. But what I dug
about Dave was like Dave didn't need to be around
a whole bunch of different dudes do low but really
was like he's from d C. So he really didn't
act the city. You know what I'm saying. Thing you know,

(12:36):
like when when you're around one thing about racism, it
breaks down. A couple of things that breaks down is
crimp crime, because no matter what, it don't matter if
you connected with somebody y'all doing some dirt, there's never
no racism. He could be Irish, Italian, black, if y'all
at homeboys, y'all you feel me. But then it just
goes on like it was like, Okay, he's at Harvard,
I'm overhead. Damn, he's kind of cool, you know what

(12:58):
I'm saying. Fucking let's go see with overheads like funk
with David And was he the first person that when
you spoke to him and you said, maybe I could
get out the streets. No? You you wanted to get
out the streets. Oh no, you didn't want to get
on the streets. No. Yeah, I was wilding her, not
just that. We was husting everything for you know what?
Never watched that he had a record label movie surrender.

(13:21):
We know you staying up? I did. We're gonna talking
about that story too. You talking about Thinkers. No, I
didn't know. It was a trip. He was ten ninety,
you know that. That's is that how it happened. It
was night and we can talk about that later later
stink back on the show. Okay, pick up to Paul
piss right? Yeah? Cool now? Yeah it was cool then? Okay,

(13:42):
cool one. You know Roders want to come up here.
You know he might the story I heard why she she?
I remember that? Trust remember that. So let's let's let's
let's talk about it. You just made the transition to reality.

(14:05):
But before you made the transition to reality, right, you
didn't give a funk about telling the industry to kiss
your hass? How did that? How did that attitude derived?
Like It wasn't. No, it wasn't. It was just different times,
you know what I'm saying. Back then, you know, you
know what I'm saying, it was just I don't know,
you know, from Boston, always kind of always got a
little revel I'm older, so I got a little revolutionists

(14:27):
in me, you know, back then? Yeah, you know, because
I mean, you know what I'm saying, because it's like
you you're seeing, you're seeing the struggle, and you're looking
at things that ain't right, and you know you're seeing
people being politically correct. I really don't understood still what
that was, as much as I do now, you know
what I'm saying. But back then I felt like that

(14:48):
I had I had no political correctness. That's when you
know you're like, you're a real revolutionaries when you have
no political correctness. I don't think I'm that anymore because
I have a lot of politically correctness and the reasons that,
be honest, I do not but that but that that
don't that don't take away you know that that's don't
won the hood. This is different the hoods there. You know,

(15:10):
I didn't done that, But I'm saying as far is
really given the fuck for the betterment of our culture.
Actually shot of hens about to go deep balls balls
look at you know, I love you don't get drunk.
Do you remember the time he got drunk and you
left in the wheel chair. I don't drink. I don't drink, remember, Yeah, yeah,

(15:33):
I don't get him like him. Yeah, listen, listen. There's
no Snapchat, there's no Instagram, I mean none, So people
had to actually listen to my story on this. You know,
he walked to the hotel and it was like I

(15:55):
care walk they would and got him a wheel chair.
I was like, oh my god, the body right, there
was no everything he makes really a drink, like a drink.
And then he started making He started hanging out with
maybe though. You know what I noticed when you get
fund us, when you mix s, you can't see why.
You just all over the place. But but that's how

(16:16):
they drain, like the sunny made me and sunny. Yeah.
I don't go for a Dave drink like that too.
Dave is a day. Let me just tell you about Dave. Listen,
I'm hung out with Dave, just like I hung out
with you, and Dave. He'd be dropped. He'd just be quiet,
like you sunny, keep me fucked up, he'd be quiet different. Yeah, yeah,

(16:36):
just the little boy. Yeah, it's a transsexual drinking anything.
I said it wrong? Dry sexual? Right, she tried anything
my bad, my bad, bad badly. So see, you know,
let's go because you know we're on the podcast. I'm

(16:59):
still waiting for the time. Always had to ask this question.
Mix man, did you have anything to do with that?
Mix man? Listen, listen. You know what I'm beyonest with
your right. It's like you know, you know, like when
you when you have um relationships. You know what I'm
saying in the industry, male and female friends. You know

(17:21):
what I'm saying, like your friends, like your grand relationship friends.
That's two different friends. I'm saying, like when you when
you when you're dealing with covers and magazines, it's all
about relationships with the with the artists. You know what
I'm saying. With the person. You know what I'm saying,
You got to talk to us for real. He's pro
he's probate. Oh no, I think I answered that correctly.
When you smash, you can't say we come on classic an.

(18:05):
This is the rule on the street, because you know
the street got down out of everybody wanted the respect
for you and my girl. Room, I wouldn't even you
know what I'm saying. But I'm just saying no, no, no, no,
because you know, you know I'm saying, just as as gentlemen,

(18:27):
we don't we you know, we don't kiss and tell
you know what I'm saying, we don't. We don't kiss him.
Tell as as gentlemen, you know what I'm saying. That's
just the room on the street. I'm saying. There's a
lot of people. Lady said that, a lot of people
who wanted to do reckets. But it's a rule of

(18:48):
that you actually would would both of them. I think,
I think I think people makes a noise for that
nose even it was just a room. It's back you
met your wife was back in the day. Listen, listen,

(19:08):
let's listen. Let's say because I'm going I'm going straight
take think about oh man, you yeah, I told me
you want to do this. I don't know if you're
made from the angle black. I'm a media guy now,
like it's roses, reverse the roses first, you know, David,

(19:33):
you know, just to hit me with his interviews and
guess what I'm hitting you all from son. Let you know.
When you know the tower, you know what to be about. Honestly,
it's about relationships. It's about relationships with everybody in this business. David, So,
who you would say it's better tell him? David, you
would say, I'll say, so, who would you say it's

(19:55):
better wrapping? Rapping with your A way you want to answer,
it's all be honest with you. We have both of them. Really,
it's gonna come in time. You gotta saying. They're saying
we together. No, no, no, I'm gonna you were not.

(20:18):
Iagine nothing. We're gonna play a game. He's trying to
hip hop. You know a lot of people on hip
hop that was bullshit. We're gonna play a game. If
you don't want to answer the question, you're gonna take
a shot. All right, all right, but I gotta port
a shot. What you mean that's the way you gotta go.
I'm gonna ask you a certain random questions if you

(20:39):
don't want to add this is a drake chap. Okay, okay,
but but but don't no, no, no, no, we have
to compromise that. Wait, you don't, no, no, Let the
shots be preportant. We agree, on that. P's not gonna
let you put a shot that we'll be dancing out
the small phone. That's that's that's a shot. You're my friend.

(21:00):
Let me get awake a little bit, Let me a
little bit so which one is bad? Oh no, no, no,
no no, I'm gonna tell you which one is better
than they both? Incredible? Great way to answer. That's that's
how a gentleman answers. Okay, they never say that A
little bit man, this little bit man. Maybe five mis

(21:25):
I'm a fait private person when it comes to any
type of situation, novel work, five mikes you there um
in your opinion, she didn't get fine. I thought she
got phone app No, I think I think she got five.
She got five? Okay, you know what you're with the
name of that APT No, because I don't know I
know what my my, my? Do you think she should

(21:48):
have got five? Drake? Good? You ain't good? You'll answer
you the question. I actually do you think she wish
she should have? A media? Guy? Well, I'm ask you,
why are you pointing up on me like a check y'
with Listen? Listen, listen, we don't gi night you're gonna

(22:11):
play this game? Now play this. Well heard you the
grape Vine at one point he was in love with
what the met were talking. I'm going back, I'm going
goes to me. I'm like, I'm going back to here.

(22:39):
I just want to see if you're gonna take the
shot of night and I'm moving on from here. I
wanna see you to take this shot at night. I'm
gonna see if you take the shot on that first
in all, First of all, it's all about this, relationships,
just about this, and we don't know what is about
I watch all your pass none of the big none
of this. I'm pretty a got the revertation. You've got you,

(23:07):
I love drink to that. If I love you, Oh,
you know you're trying drink you take the whole shot.
I want to see it. Take the whole shot. It's
going down, it's going down. So you was five. I
love it. You got yo got you got a good
hit list man, come over here, come on here. When

(23:27):
you're hit listen, you gotta brag like this has been
a past in the past. Let's come on, come come
on yours shot. Thank you for getting a good sort.

(23:51):
You know't you even look at me like we be
premeditating this. I'm sorry, but listen, so let's get back
to the let's get act right now. But it's the
number one podcast right now, number one intemy want to
call him the enemy, but even if he's going to
go somewhere, So listen. You know, I'm still shook up
from the left. The fuck up. It's all rumors. It's

(24:16):
all rumors. This is all rumors. Say the drink Chace
under the story is our actual faction? I'm nice? Where
actually my house drunk before? You're not? That's the hard question?
Or no, no, no, let's let's keep it back. So
one of our direct competition people is a guy named
Elliott Wilson. That was our son? Was employed by you?

(24:40):
Where did he work for you? All? That that was
our son? Okay, you want to think that was our son?
I don't want to talk. Let's go, let's go exactly. Okay,
So what happened that he was a music? That he
was a music? When you heard what do we adopt him? Like?
So what do you say him? Who do we adopt him?

(25:00):
Did you say you'll put him all? But the people
who put Okay, so getting my nice n He was
a cool guy. He's a cool guy. I just put
in this space. No no, no no no no no
no no no. This was after was way after Davis.

(25:23):
He was never one years. He was assistant used to
music at this is probably like ninety seven ninety years.
He used donna get the phillies in the Dutch. Nah,
I don't say that because after he remember us to
get our lunch, the lunch you order me back then
let me see probably like some some wings and some

(25:45):
over ship whatever. But he used to get the lunch.
You know what I'm saying. I mean like he was
like what it was lunch for me? I mean he
was you know, he was. He was a getting label.
Was six years about for so you guys put them

(26:07):
on you gloom you him everything, he knows everything he's
seen at the source he brought over there. In an
extent said which, by the way, parents just went under
Harris Publications. So let me tell you why, because remember
it was always them against us, and now since we're
Hip Hop Weekly, we actually outlasted Harris Publications. So we're

(26:29):
gonna make some noise. That's big. That's big because after
we lost the souce, they thought it was over for us.
You feel me. We was banishing into a question and
we're gonna get back to Elliott. It's it's great for us,
but um the new sauce. Have you level border new
Sauce and just look through it? Not like this recently. Now,

(26:52):
I would never I would never buy you. But we
will never buy it because it was once your company.
Or you'll never buy it because their content is just
both both check check. You know what I'm saying. It
ain't not shipping eighteen years. A lot of things went
through us with that, a lot of good, bad and ugly.
So that was cool with Lindale Manila, right what everybody everybody, yeah,

(27:14):
is our lawyer? Lawyer? Everybody was out lawyer back then
everybody was man. We had man with so many men,
we worked with so many motherfuckers. Was crazy. He was
trying to something like under the table like he was
your lawyer. So oh god, no, he just jumped in on.
He just wants to be us. You see a lot

(27:35):
of these motherfucker's thought that once they noticed the truth,
it's the truth. It's the truth. Like when Black Enterprise
took the magazine look at, Look At Look. Let me
tell y'all a secret right, Me and Dave went to
Bob Johnson right right before Johnson our view as a
dumb that's the guy who used to own own BT
before he's so BT for three billion dollars. Goddamn it,

(28:00):
if you're gonna do a foul story, I think he
used to own Sholotte when he's want to sold the
Hornets to Jordan's Jordan. You know, so some long story show.
You know we um, you know we we We was
in the whole thirty million like with a bank loan.
So you know, Bob, what means you had to at
least make sixty seventy million. Bob weren't make some noise

(28:21):
for y'alli is killing the game. I'm sorry. It was
those days was crazy. So y'all was in the hole
and he kind of saying that he wanted to buy
the magazine straight out directly. So we flew to his
office and it was at this time, was d C,
d C. No, it's Bob Johnson, Bob Johnson, I'm okay,

(28:47):
so um, you know he wanted we wanted, We wanted
eighty million. Four We weren't asking for eighty million, and
he was. He came out and he came back, he said,
I write you a fifty five million dollar check today,
And we was looking back, you know, since you said,
you know, Bob, give us so many. We went in
the room and Dave was just us too, and we
figured after like paying off the bank, loans and taxes

(29:09):
and everything else, who would end up with a few
million dollars a piece. The whole thing about the source was,
and I say that to say this, the whole thing
about the source was that how dysfunctional? This just how
as dysfunctional? How do you said? I always get dysfunctional?
As it may have seen the relationship between me and David,
how it was was kind of made. The source with

(29:30):
it was Dave been from college on being from the streets.
It just came from two perspectives. And that's how we
ran the magazine. You know what I'm saying that, like,
you know, we didn't want to lose the source and
then be like, okay, we're not still runnings of it,
because we know how it's almost like a call like
gave five, but you're not, y'all gone gone and we

(29:52):
just come how about you? David? You didn't like that
as well? Now we do, you know, we won't understand
involved because we say how bigger things, you know, I mean,
specially with the Social awards we did saw so all
Access TV. I mean, we was doing major things. But
the problem was me and Dave wasn't with everybody like
in New York and that and that and that, Like
up there, it's like a club of dudes that been

(30:12):
in and out, you know that, Norman. You know what
I'm saying. In those offices up in New York, in
the industry, it's the same people that just revolved from
office to office to office because they all feel comfortable
with each other. And God bless them because I've dealt
with a lot of them. I've made a lot of
money with them. So I have nothing bad to say
by anything. But I just don't think that me and
Dave was a part of that, you know what I'm saying.

(30:33):
And by that meeting, you know, we had our own
independent views. We didn't have to be politically correct, We
didn't have to kiss no ass because it stopped up here.
We didn't have to answer to nobody. You know. You
guys were like the first like major media company to
invest in online media. I remember that early. That's how
we lost them. That's ultimately how we lost. That's how
we I thought that was that was going to see

(30:59):
the telling that it was me just investing early when
when the dot com came out, when it was all
that's going crazy with that, that's when I went out.
I bet the magazine on the internet, and when I'm
borrowed ten fifteen million dollars and started. This was like
seven years before the world songs gone. Like know what
I'm saying. It was just too early with the bank.

(31:19):
It just nobody understood. We was waiting and everything. But Dave,
it gotta feel crazy now for you to know that
you had the vision for what because why you invested
all that money. You actually seen where it's gonna be now,
So I gotta feel crazy that maybe it didn't work,
but your idea was one correct. You know that, right?

(31:40):
I mean, you know we'll see anywhere we vote for me.
But that's real though. It was was right young and
they invested. He asked me, I was, I don't know.
I don't know nothing about that ship. Okay, I don't
know nothing about computers under that funk all that, and
just I don't know what then it is? Step stop?
Was it was it y'all y'all cool with step Stole mean,

(32:00):
you know what I'm saying, Steve is like somebody that
we've always had that love hate thing with. You know,
we've got money with him too. We broke bread with him.
But then Steve has another side of him that is
about that again, like that crew, you know, I called
it that crew. You know what I'm saying. And me like,
you know, I'm just saying, like you know, at the
end of the day, the other side, you know what

(32:21):
I mean, Like there's there's there's a few sides, you
know what I'm saying, And that's what what I say.
I just think that me and Dave was too a
little bit rough under the edges phim we wasn't we
wasn't status quo, and the source was getting only like
wanted to do Steve to the whole advertising business. Peter,
Now that was his first partner in the advertising business.
When you know, when I met Steve, he was, you know,

(32:42):
working with kids and playing like Carrie and records the
kid and play Welcome to play a new podcast network
during radio and TV personalities, talking business, sports, tech, entertainment,

(33:04):
and more. Play it at play dot It we're back
to drink Champs Radio with rapper and R and d J.
Then you see in this industry a lot of people
we don't get all props when we do the right thing.
So we're gonna get to the crap bottom of the story.
So you the guy who introduced him to the advertisement

(33:25):
firm that he started working with and they started doing
the reboxing thing and all absolutely absolutely he got he
he was working up at R C A Records. He
was an A and R up there for a little while.
Gave a deal. He used to give me budgets for videos.
You know what I'm saying. I was getting money here,
like budgets to do videos. Take the fifteen stacks. I

(33:47):
go do the video for like five stacks. You don't
saying preten you know I'm saying. I remember one time
some should have I got locked up and I had
had spent all the money came to ballstos like yo,
and it was for this white artist name base Blast
out of Connecticut've never yeah, Yo, they gave me fift

(34:11):
That's this is before this was like one of the
first he could Steve been trying to do this white
rapper thing for you know, Steve had visions of this
of a white crossover rapper. He was the first one
to really have visions of this, you know what I'm saying.
I'm sure that people had in their mind, of course
when Vanilla Ice came up, But I'm saying far as Steve,

(34:32):
he was seeing it from a marketing standpoint of Look
these kids out here, these white kids, we can give
them someone of their own. And I always felt like, no,
that's the opposite of what hip hop is. So the
white kids are coming to the hoods because they love
of music. It has nothing to do with the race.
You can't make it race because when you make it race,
that's when it gets all screwed up. So interesting thing.

(34:52):
We have man blink on here recently, right, and then
Bleak said he was shout to Blake about the rocket
Fellow breaker up right, and um, all like all the
employees of how like every successful team now has a
Rocketfeller employee. That's that's that's that's a part of their team,
whoever it be. Do you you guys got to feel

(35:13):
the same way, Like, I mean, how many people came
from the song and miss what didn't miss seeing that?
It's like this we can get gold. I don't know
that the other dude through. Okay, it's not a to

(35:34):
raise Mike Mike Elliott, who I'm directed, Loving Basketball and
all that Elliot Mike Elliott started some Elli Wilson, Elliot Wilson,
Mike Elliott's Mike Elliotta wrecking loving Basketball and a few
of the movies apps right, because I'm so funked up.

(35:58):
He was like, so you feel me so so a little.
So it's like a lot of people came through the office.
A lot of people came through the sauces. We discovered him,
Tyson Beford y'all discovered the sauce the boon Dog. He
was the first blotoon starting. Definitely remember that. Yeah, come on,

(36:18):
happen that happened? U? Well, he actually he was doing
it in the University of Maryland newspaper. When I went
home to d C, I had to something. I think
my mom gave me the newspaper. I've seen the comic
in their Boon Dogs. Just dope. I remember the first
time he came and like in the newspaper. Yeah, think

(36:42):
about he think about all the graffiti the source introduced.
You know what I'm saying motherfucker's never like like, honestly,
niggas wasn't the source kept graffiti going to all my friends.
I was like, yo, you know, I got busy, you
know what people were sitting there like you know how
much I used to read the bag and like they
do every part of that, Like when the person discovered

(37:03):
that in jail, the Source magazine. I got to commit
you guys, because there's never been a magazine that's been
that credible. People don't listen to people right now, Like
if a person can do another like this, briding a
magazine to try to bite your migrating system, it never worked. Man,
How proud of y'all of that? You know what I
mean that? You know I could feel that with you.

(37:24):
Dave were there first, you know, and we did it
the right way, you know, I mean, you know, we
kept it, kept it street, kept it real, kept hip hop,
you know what I mean? And and it was it
was a beautiful thing. We were. We didn't answer to nobody.
We we owned and controlled our own thing. We wasn't
you know, we was out of all the entrepreneurs. You
go back and look at the history Russell Simmons on,

(37:46):
everybody down they all had major corporation partners back in them.
You know, ours was completely completely independently. So it was
until the dot com. That's when you know I lost
control of it because I bet everything on it dot
com And that's what you were right, you were just

(38:06):
like ahead of his time. It was how can you
have Like that's crazy that you gotta be punished and
then the internet is killing print magazine. Yeah, what I'm
saying he knew it. Though he's seen it. He knew it,
like I know, he's a genie, seen it. Next time
he says something, you gotta just listen. You're not give
him two years on it. I mean, you know it happens.

(38:27):
It happens, but you know, but but you can't. You
can't worry about that ship. Like, let's get to the source.
You gotta keep going. You know what I said to
the Source awards? Whose idea was it? And why did
everybody get shot? Or there? Guys had a couple performance
at the Couple's Never want to that later you, my brother,

(38:48):
I never want to surce award. But listen, at this
time when you were hot, you had to be at
the How did your guys come up with that idea like,
how does the magazine company figure we'll do. The whole
thing with the Source was to be a voice for

(39:09):
the culture. That means so as we're being a voice
for the culture, we're seeing that hip hop isn't being recognized.
In fact, it's being you know, disrespected at award shows,
the Grammys things like that that had hip hop categories
in the late nineteen eighties. Everything they were doing was
just you know, yeah, disrespectful. So you know, it was

(39:31):
natural for us to want to come up with a
you know, a forum to be able to recognize, you know,
the real stuff that was going on. So that was
my that was who my whole idea. So the first
thing was to bring it to MTV and your Own
TV raps. We did it as a day on your
Own TV raps where we gave out the Source Awards,
which that was the first, the very first one one

(39:54):
with their lover and Dr Drew. You guys gotta stop
moving back there, okay, listen, listen, you guys are sucking
up the ship. You gotta stop moving please, you're moving
and storing. Smack the nigg please and come over here, man.
So listen, this is what I want to ask that
short night day that that wasn't the first? Was that

(40:17):
the second or third? Remember Bernie Matt hosted the first one.
Imagine that, all right, p Bernie Bernie second it was
at the Panamount, then in New York and New York
the first when the first one was in New York
right there? Not even think how did that moment sit?
When the whole Take Kick Claim came out O D
B Like like we got videotapes and all these ships

(40:37):
right there, I had like we had to do the
best of the source A wards and I had to
edit that all of them, so you know, we had
to combine all the ship and then just sitting there
and seeing all these groups the biggest thing with me
because I come from group and hip hop and regass anything.
I love hip hop like be honestly, like for real,
I was in DJ rock Shocking Ray Dog. That was

(41:02):
your name, Rock Shocking Dog. You don't just go back
to that name, so so you know, it was like,
you know what I'm saying honestly like that that's the
essence of hip hop. You know what I'm saying, DJ
DJ spending for the motherfucker's you know, spitting but this
source awards where sure night he was in New York City.

(41:23):
Did you did you know that was probably the like
the minute with the East Coast West coast be not
not not say it's spoke, but that was the time
it came on national front. Like, um, we had always
heard that, you know, there was this bad been some
beet growing. But when she came there, it was like
it was timing. That was just timing. But did you guys,

(41:43):
was you guys aware of that? But it was timing.
It was ware he was gonna say no, no, no, no,
we will It was gonna be tension. We was when
something could have popped off because you had heard the
beak or whatever and we didn't have to was crazy
about that particular one, like we've had, like the later ones,
we've had more time of security a lot of times
with the Nation of Islam. You know what I'm saying,

(42:03):
shots to the Nation of Islam companies, you've always dealt
with security, they've always happened it. But back then we
really didn't have a lot of security at that one.
So something was gonna jump off when all that she
was saying, when she was saying all that and everything
that would have been the one to pop off because
there wasn't a gang of security. Now when we were
just looking, not happen, you know, um came on. That

(42:27):
was the first one that was just snap. So what
happened so so so so so tribes getting the ward,
you know, saying while while he's getting the war pokings
already setting up wherever the sound man is bringing him
with a steak or that was done. We knew nothing
about this one. We did nothing about this nigger. So

(42:49):
their man went to the sound man, told the nigga,
you wanta you wanna put this in there, the out
on bail song, the dead man or whatever. So like
they had him a nobody knew that. They just went
to just had him house. Are you doing? Yeah, they
came back. A couple of niggas went right to the
sound man. We never knewiced this is. You know what
I'm saying, I've seen big site and then later on

(43:09):
he told me the whole ship. So but from from
my view point without there, I just remember him going
up there and then he grabbed because I was like
kind of backstage, and I remember I was back there
with total and then he just went up there and
just you know, que Tip was saying his speech and
just grabbed the ship, said throw that ship out. Bill

(43:30):
started the music and my music came on. He ripped
that ship and I remember backstage, I remember what the
niggas came back, one of them at least that slide.
The niggas was like one of the niggas was crying,
like really upset, like um uh, it's not God rest
of Dead Fife. The other one there was two more,

(43:54):
Jerrold being the other one also, he was just upset
kicking over ship. Just matched. They was gonna perform and
it was presenting the Big Awards just got and he
just wanted to see how did you get that? You know,
as wild as the Sauce Awards was, as wild he
was an audience though at that first time was when

(44:17):
that happened. Let's make some noise, big wild as the
Source Awards was, and as and as monument, there has
never been somebody else that aspect. Nobody has ever been
able to hip um duplicate no the Sauce Awards in

(44:37):
the hip hop version. I've never seen award show. I
don't give a funk with happening backstage, you guys held
it together like in an award because it was it
was it was. It was an amount of respect for
the magazine really for the relationship. I told you the
relationships like it's hard giving, you know, dealing with artists
and when they get mix and when they you know

(44:57):
what I'm saying, because again I would have nothing to
do with it, and my funders could be mad at
me because they didn't. You know. So anyways, Um, you
just made great shows. I mean those shows it was.
I'm gonna be honest. You guys are my friends, you guys,
my brothers, you guys with my family. But I'm not

(45:18):
saying that because of this. I sit back and I
watch award shows and just so happens. There's never been
awards show presented as dope as the source Awards. I
appreciate that, Like I mean, I mean, I don't remember
just keeping it honest with you, like, um, like, like,
how do you feel about that? Like you do you
think it could ever be done? Or do you think

(45:38):
that you guys do awards? You had the blueprint, We
had the blueprint. You still got the blueprint. I'm saying.
I'm saying as far as like we started the blueprint
all right, as far as giving great shows for artists
that probably wouldn't get the same type of coverage and
other award shows once they've cleared it with the with
the networks to get on because remember it was on
B T U, p N thirty three. I mean, Dave

(46:00):
got it all over the place on major networks, on
cable networks, the social words for like just TV show right,
all that too, of different and that with two times
on Saturday Saturday afternoon to clock. We gave ray J
his first TV show. J was the first host first
of our TV was what's the use shout to ra J?

(46:22):
That's what I'm saying. So, um, so, what do you
guys think of these award shows now? Like, do you
think these guys should hire you, like as a consultant
at least? Don't don't keep it one thousand you try

(46:46):
to get No, you can't, you can't, no, no, no no.
The problem is motherfucker's just scared to funk with the
real ship. That's that's always been the problem. It's always
the inability if we can't control certain motherfucker's and they
rules because it ain't easy, you know what I'm saying.
But it's like, but there's a way that you deal
with motherfucker's. We all know that. We all come from

(47:07):
the street. We all know how to deal with everybody,
you know what I'm saying. But but, but but there's
other people who can't deal like that. They don't have
that respect, They don't have that they I think they
don't even give it a chance, you know what I'm saying.
They already assume it's gonna be some crazy ship, not
knowing this is gonna be there. They wouldn't they wouldnt
even try, right j J. Rock, We never we never

(47:33):
made a commercial show in like political. We just put
the hottest street niggas on like didn't give a funk
where it was all over the place. And like when
you when you go back and look at them shows,
them shows to go down history. It's like what American
Bandstand is gonna be for rock because those shows right there,
all the social awards, it will never be like that again,
not like that. Not only that though, but the most

(47:53):
iconic groups were together. You know what I'm saying, Your compone,
how about how about pun did you ever? He said
and jerked me like the source that was crazy? What
did you think about that. It was jerked me too,
in the same sense of body who's up against the
shago one man? Yes, me, don't get me. I think

(48:19):
this is a situation right, this is gonna beat me
and Big just shot shot the shot career. You know,
listen at the end of the day, it was high myself.
But I'm getting saying I'm not hating, but I'm glad
cause because you're I understand that would be I probably Petro.
But who else was up? You? So who else? I

(48:40):
don't remember, say being us? I don't remember. I was like,
I don't know masturbating source great was that we could
they definitely at a DA time. I won't I won't hate,
but you know I got love. I love him over
the shock, but you don't. Hell yeah, I'm gonna keep

(49:02):
me ready. Was in front of me Dad's because it
was I think dropped the album. I think Dad's anchor
was there that day, and we all looked at each
other like you know, what's up, what's up? What's up?
What's up? Like one of us is going up, so
the sick goes all the way on the other side
and then jumped up. I was like, oh, well, I
was like, oh, oh no the silk and yeah, and

(49:28):
then the punt made that wrong, like did you you said?
He said so no, no, no what then win? When
y'all lost, what are you saying? No? None of us
said nothing to each other. Were just like this. You
know they paid you know, listen to is Rich. I've
never I still haven't got over it, but yeah I wanted.

(49:50):
But that's you know why I think that you guys
were so great. You guys were doing let's just like
you know, us doing this episode. Sometimes we might not
know how great it is, but there's so many people
that are young people like um, when we got our
viewers back and when you know, people said, you know,
we were doing like four hundred thousand and we were.
We were expecting people to say that that the viewers
they say in sixteens or twenty four, which lets people

(50:12):
know that if people want to go back and research
these things. You know what I'm saying. I'm saying, so
um yo, you guys doing the most legendary awards. You
guys had the most legendary magazine. Now you guys got
Hip Hop Weekly, Like how did that come about? Because
it's like, what is that like I don't want to
say gossip because that like downplays it or is it?
I mean, well, you know, after being dieted by the FEDGI,

(50:34):
going BANKUET, losing everything, well, motherfucker had to start thinking
about the future and what else that he knows and
his expertise at We knew that we was magazine. Man.
I knew that if if we still fussed with each other,
we had a chance. I still had the same connection,
Dave still had the same distribution. Um. So was there
ever time when you guys had that, Um the moment

(50:57):
I see you just broke up the FED but like, um,
when you I said, man, maybe we should separate have
to be a super sexual arrassment, I mean want sexual
Let me get into it. We really supposed to talk
about it, all right, No, No, I don't know. Is
it seven years Is it seven years back? It was
so crazy that she was crazy. Were sitting in the

(51:18):
federal building they're talking about but this is a nigga's
nuts in the federal court down there. Yeah, like that
was crazy crazy, So, um, hold on nuts never got it. Um,
So we can't talk about the sexual arras something. I mean,

(51:41):
you know, um, you know that like with the source,
like it was my decision to give Kim to be
the first woman editor in chief for the magazine's mind
and she had been working in five years. I kind
of like looked beside the woman man thing and just
seeing that she was qualified. She was she was a
hell of a writer. Against popular demand, like this was

(52:01):
like an unpopular choice for me to do this. I
was looking over people and so I did it, you
know what I'm saying. And man, we went on and
we had who pulled me to drink It's no more panammo?
Mother dyeing the podcast would be the most no, no, no,
we go first. You don't know so, I mean basically

(52:25):
it was just a situation where I've never seen anything
like it, you know, but when I've noticed in business,
like I've learned being a part of business, because again
I was I was a street thinking, you know what
I'm saying, selling drugs, and you know, I learned business
in magazine through days. Right, Um, make some noise for David,
you know his dad. They've been filming our food show

(52:48):
for three days. No but no, but no, but but
every day. But it was like, but it was like
a long time before I even seen money from source
the source was made from Yeah it was. Yeah, it's like,
so I heard the source actually started from like a
path a pamphlet. Right do you take a newsletter to
a thirty millen of company A friends? I know, I

(53:18):
think it's work A hunted maion, man, come on, let's
do it. So that's crazy man? And now and now, uh,
so many people came from there. Uh there're people that
because I heard there was you want to talk about
that directly? Biggie comment, Yo, all my outside height outside

(53:38):
outside height and then was in an outside hight. Who
else you're saying side Biggie was an unsigned height? Now
what what here do you guys go? You guys finally
make it. You got a magazine that's popping. Why did
you even think about putting on the guys that nobody

(53:59):
cared about? Like when I was in the outside, nobody
cared about me. But yeah, and still you guys have
the foresight to see that and put that on. Who's that?
There was that in Maddie se Maddie that Wow, it
wasn't mad to see the guy who helped uscover Biggie
as well. Yeah, later on the original was like Maddie

(54:26):
and I mean honestly, like to be honest, everybody that
contributed to the Source is a part of the success
of the Source throughout all the chaos and everything. You
can't take away one's work, you know what I'm saying,
one's body of work. And there was a lot of them,
and it was and it was from young people who
really lived and truly what they thought and understood. Ain't

(54:47):
cared about hip hop. I just think that in my opinion,
Like you know, as the culture grew and and and
it kind of like it was that one at one point,
then all of a sudden started kind of branching off
in its own form in different places. That's when it
was harder to keep things together. You know, Jay the
Kids says someone in our podcast. He said, hip hop
is the only John Wove music that has a South

(55:10):
version that's an East coast version or right a west coast. Right,
but we did that. There's they just did that. Yeah,
But but what do you think that started from? Because
of of barrels? Like you know what I'm saying, right,
But then it's funny because you could say that, like

(55:32):
if if you're in New York, you could be like, yeah,
one from Queen's Bridge. I'm from Left Rack. But then
if you go out of town, they go from New York.
But I'm from motherfucking so I'm from l A. So
it turns from street to city to you know, if
you go out the country, they come from the United States.
You know what I'm saying. So like, it's just really
it's it's you trying to It's us trying to rep
something so hard that we're gonna give our lives for it. Right,

(55:56):
Sometimes it don't be the right thing I'm saying. You know,
So you got stuck together? Man, You guys happy with
Dr Dre? N No, no, not like that. That up again.
Let me clear that up and clear that up, Clear
it up and clear that up. Within the within the
whole eminem thing. Doc, Let's just get it. Dr Dre

(56:16):
is probably one of my heroes, like motivators, legends, I mean,
influences everything to do with hip hop, a lot of it.
You know, I'm saying everything. Okay, New York is where
I got my hip hop from. But Dr Dre has
so much influence from his production and just from the
groups that he produced and meet with. My love West
Coast hip hop. You know I'm saying I loved it all.

(56:38):
It was the situation. Yeah, there was never beef with him,
and it necessarily wasn't a beef with Eminem was like
for what? For what? It hasn't really changed my life?
You know what I'm saying, I don't. I don't. I don't,
I don't. I don't look back. I mean, I know
maybe in a way people could look at it as

(56:58):
it has, but it really hasn't. Like I'm anna hustling
that's so cracked and drugs from a corner and came
from the projects. So anything better than that is all
right with me. You know what I'm saying. I'm saying
that I'm not nigger. That's like I've had millions, I've
had nothing in everything between. But I'm still seen or
been the same nigger. But so you back in the days,

(57:22):
you guys like if you was against the source, he
was against the souce. But you guys like he was
the first people who was to stand up against corporations.
We heard rumors of Jimmy I bean off of you
guys stills. I mean, that was the whole that was
because I was confused, that was that that was a situation. Really,
the whole thing with that was like I just felt

(57:44):
like with MTV crosses and the sauce at the depth
jam right, the source you guys like for y'all, then
you have the source like compilation and it came out
on that like, that's the first time I ever seen
a four and a half million dollar check. Let's make
some noise for that. Somebody rot no weed at the atmosphere, compilations, compilations,

(58:19):
I negotiate that. Okay, did you pay the artist? No? Yeah, yeah,
yeah yeah. I'm just gonna say I'm sure they don't
one of them. I'm saying, you got you guys. I
don't know why you guys get a bad rap? Why
is it? You know what it is before? I mean,
the thing is, you guys are so powerful that it
was easier to say you guys are bad guys than

(58:40):
it is for people to try to get to know you.
And what I mean by that is if a person
know that they ships wagg or they know that they
can't get at you, it's easier for them to say, man,
I'm so sneakers is whatever, whatever. But the minute you
get in front you guys, you guys are hip hop
story is you guys are great people, Like, why did
you think you guys ever got a bad rap? What's

(59:01):
going on? Because we wasn't like again, it wasn't it
wasn't just bowing down, you know. It wasn't going along
with yeah, conforming, I don't know that word. It wasn't
going along with with with with the go along. It
was like the rebels and you know, with me, it's
looking like you know, because that's how the fans came in.

(59:21):
They thought I was straight. Um, I got hit with
all kinds of money laundering and extortion, and they thought
that I was the big drug deal of funding. And
the problem with that was in the same thing with
murder incors that I don't think the people really understood
how many millions of dollars legally we were bringing in.
See they're thinking, all murdering a million, you know what

(59:42):
I'm saying. Yeah, So so they just they just underestimated
how much legal money it was. They thought it had
to be some big legal operation because all this money.
But that's what it was because they was looking at
the tax situation after the after the after the criminal

(01:00:03):
broke down, I had the guilt to taxes I took
it to um trout and ended up they found me
not guilty. I was one of the few to be
found out guilty. Of course I had to pay the stick,
pay the fine, like one of the few to beat
a federal tax. Took it to the trial, to the trial,
and you're still on your ground and you still you know,

(01:00:26):
going to trial right now, y'allah. So look, so they
had accountant line up and ship wired up. Yeah, you
know what I'm saying, that could work at the summer
that Dave high hold on, that's what we want that
they hired accounting. Dave hired the accounting. Yeah, but he

(01:00:47):
did approached three Dunkin Donuts over to George Washington Bridge.
The feastant broke the account that you have asked him
the wine account. You know, I was wing w Dons
that first going on on on Route four, the first
Dunking Donors, and said he went in there. They sat
with him and they said, and he's he thought, he said,
the reason he did it because he thought it would
be excited to do. He six months and ship, what's

(01:01:17):
you doing coming around? You were like just s you
would be like you were talking conversations and I'd be like, yo,
check this out. I'd be like, my man, I don't
even know you, Dave. You know what we talked, Patriots
and jets, need to paytriots and jets. Other than that,
I don't know you, so talk to you about nothing,
but you knew he was. I don't know nothing. I

(01:01:37):
just don't. I just don't even be having these conversations
with motherfucker' We ain't talking sports or some other ship. Motherfucker.
I'm not saying there talking about taxes and aller. What
are you talking about? Man, that's what the funk you
hired for. Yeah, you know what I'm saying, gonna talk today.
He hired you. I don't know you. You know what
I'm saying. And that's how it went until the nigga came.
When when I was on trial, he came in. He

(01:01:58):
couldn't even look at me. I'm looking at this nigger
like and it was always like, it was always cool.
I never did nothing to this motherfuer Holly know him?
How long was he working with the good six years
of five years, making like a hundred hair wire. I
about to say, Mason noise for him. We gotta we got,
we gotta do something that's like the opposite of making damn. Yeah,

(01:02:29):
that was a lot of people don't understand, right. Look
at I used to give people in the source like
rail No No, No five Mikes rail diamond, source change
for the girls and for the guys the drill, diamond
and ice from Jacob. Then we spent so much money
with Jacob. It wasn't this man like. We took care
of out people. You know what I'm saying, We like,
we we took kids before all the fake diamond. This

(01:02:52):
is the real There wasn't for that, you know what
I'm saying. Any ice, This is the real ship. And
we were spending money taking care in the isn't like.
I don't know what it was, man, I just it
was always uphill climb for motherfucker's to really try to,
you know, street niggas funk with us. But it was
like the industry motherfucker's wasn't too many funkings. I knew
you for so long. We lived in the same building,

(01:03:13):
and I've never heard the story of a nigger wind Why. Yeah,
this is my first time. I've learning a lot crazy,
I'm learning a lot. You gotta rush. I just don't
know one thing that is that the first time I've
ever heard your neighbor was in Carlito's Ways article. Cut
you the way. That's what I get talking to that
job straight out of jail and the first time saying
now like that's about you know, as soon as you

(01:03:36):
get out of jail. Yeah, hiring him because we need
niggers like that out of like hire him. I was
the one to do the hip hop behind balls. That
was my idea. You know what I'm saying. So you
hired call it fresh straight out of jail, ye remember? Yeah, yeah,
look we all I don't see I mean if they
still holding brudges this song, Like, come on, when you

(01:03:59):
say holding budgets, are you saying that, because because you're saying,
you're arguments. Every relationship has an argument, whether it's your girl,
y'all more than arguments. Yeah, yeah, there was some thoughts
a couple of days. It was a couple of years
about it. I remember who's the our CIA records. It
was Um and thence guy sor niggers came up to

(01:04:21):
the meeting. We had an our CIA records. We're having
a meeting about our ep it. He was a press
day the scheduled album games Cate when when Clue was
the assistant there, okay O C Records, Okay, before it
was DJ Clue. I think he was just getting into

(01:04:43):
what I'm saying. What's happen. Yeah, so they scheduled we
didn't know where they scheduled an interview, you know, hey
with the shorts, said that we're gonna come to interview them.
And then they came up there with a subpoena trying
to serve and this is I heard something about this.
They try to boycott you. No, no, this was over time,

(01:05:05):
because that was some time. They came to our c
A offices and lied to give upstairs to our to
our press date. We have always pressed people from the
store that you guys are employing, like four of them,
Reggie Dennis, James, Bernard's, a few, a couple of them.
They came up there and they stood in front of
like it was on this big gass table. Now mind you,

(01:05:28):
we were happy were the people are. Golf Brooks was
up in the building and ship like that. They already
heard niggas was wild. They're waiting to like to throw
us out the building anyway. Man CBS is ready to
do to us, just stole on them. Next thing, you know,
chairs he went through the glass window. We got dropped
from our next week, y'all keep the gangster. Sorry if

(01:05:54):
you didn't know drink cash podcast. You make noise for
the eggnorant. We love it Ahead, you just take one
pair of you mad red man, you I can tell
you really put it in work this week with me,
because Yo, listen, I'm mad black around. Case you didn't
know I'm black around. I was just from the Food
Show man. He was one of my Food show. You
the first person of the show and the podcast in

(01:06:16):
the same day. This is what we're playing on doing
with the podcast, depending on traveling with the Food show,
getting people on the Food Show. And then you know,
we had scar Faced today. Shout that's my god. Man,
he went to the hospital. Y'all suck him up. Almost
kill scar Face to that track if you eat some

(01:06:38):
fun up ship that no, we gives you no nigger.
I'm gonna be honest. Scar Face is crazy. He's always
been crazy, but like a genius crazy man. He walked
over like this. I was like, Oh, I thought, that's
like how they could do you swell up? No, he
ship swall up before he touched it forecause you can't breathe.

(01:07:00):
It brought up you to you're a big other face
small is my brother man, thank you for coming to
the full show. Um, you know what I mean to
try and get you on the podcast tomorrow because you
gotta make it up to me and my brother. But hang, hang,
but listen. Do you think the souce, a feeling like
the sauce can ever be recreated? Like something like it,

(01:07:21):
like soul was natural and raw and you know, discovering
new talent because I would say it would be this podcast,
but then I would be lying because we're not discovering
new talent. We want to speak to legends and people
got these nineties stories, so it can any form of
shape of fashion. Can the source ever be created where
people like if listen, in case you guys didn't know

(01:07:45):
when it's it was said in the source it was
the word of God, like nobody can dispute it. If
CNN got four Mix, that's it, nobody disputes it. Can
any format could ever recreate that? I'm glad I don't.

(01:08:09):
I don't think do you think that can happen? It's
possible only because like there's really nothing out there right
now that's you know, has like a great voice for
the culture. There's nothing really there. You know, there's world Star.
You know, the un organized digital format it has to

(01:08:33):
be everything. It got to be. It has been a
combination of digital, TV, print, It has to be a
combination of everything really multimedia to really get across. But
but like with that has to come trust and who's
doing it. You see, a lot of these things that
you're talking about all becomes the trust and the comfortableness
of the person with the people who are doing it,
how much experience they have, how much credibility they have,

(01:08:54):
and and and and and and and and how and
how many people that can cross over because it's so
there's so many different areas of hip hop now. Man,
it's not like unified like before. So not only it's territorialized,
but it's also sectioned off within the territorial So you
know what I mean. It's just it's just a matter
of how you try to come and do it. I mean,
you know, I feel like me and David put in

(01:09:16):
enough work that you know, like well, you know we're
in talks right now for hip hop with your TV show.
I think, you know, no, no, no, no, not that
because it's not about necessarily that, But we want to
do it more like a magazine show, like how we
did it before the Source magazine where Tonight Entertainment Tonight.
You don't say you actually have to get these guys

(01:09:37):
to sign off because TMZ don't we have to get
these guys. Well no, we we We could actually do
that too, like if if we go on locations somewhere,
but usually it's just blobs of you know, like yeah,
like you know what I'm saying, you would get but
all of them signing off because I see you guys
were kind of early on that, like the first time
I've ever heard first we were was about to be
released from prison. I've seen it on Hip Hop Weekly,

(01:09:57):
like y'all camera guy was out there shout like like
like like everybody else said Rimy Marr was about to
be released. I didn't believe it. Look at what I'm saying.
I was on the road somewhere and I looked at
Hip Hop Weeklies, and every time hip Hop Weekly was
on point, I was posted something. Everything that y'all posted

(01:10:18):
was one of its accurate. Other raps, We're gonna have
that on TV. See that should be on just like
how CNN got it, you know what I'm saying. That's
that's what we're trying to do. And like I said, look,
love us, hate us, anything between. You can't take away
our experience in this game. And I mean we've lived
through all these decades of hip hop and it's changed
dramatically and we're still here, you know, and you know

(01:10:40):
that ain't bragging. That's just a testament to just trying
to be a part of the culture and understand the culture.
You know what I'm saying. You know, so like no
matter what, you know what I'm saying, Like we we
we think that if we can get when we get
hip hop weekly on TV and get the show, and
that's when that that's going to be the beginning of
now reliance get right. You remember I've been I've been

(01:11:03):
all through Hollywood with that, you know what I'm saying,
like him a few times. But you know it's like
like when I'm talking to some people, like you know
what I'm like, Like right now, there's a lot of
networks that's looking for real, Like with Empire being so big,
there's a lot of networks that's you know what I'm saying,
looking at black culture like, hey, we better funk with them.
You know what I'm saying, looking at love and hip
hop numbers, and those are big numbers. No, No, that's

(01:11:25):
a question I want to ask you, Dave. You know, um,
he's always been your partner. Uh. You guys are friends,
you guys are brothers. But how did you feel the
first time he told you he was gonna do love
and hip hop? Man? Somebody, how did you feel about that?
I mean, I supported that. We just moved to Atlanta
and and and that one thing that to another and

(01:11:46):
uh he told me about it, and man, because love
and hip hop was that accident? It was actually wasn't
that big an accident. What do you mean by that?
I'm saying, like, you know, me and Stevie have been
sucking around. I've been living I was living down here. Stevie,
come fun with me. Steve stand like come over, yeah,
yeah right, So you know what I'm saying, Like it

(01:12:07):
was you know, I went up there on Atlanta down Listen.
I don't know what I'm doing. I don't want to
make guys had a club Listen. The first time I
ever got mased to I got made famous. Let me

(01:12:29):
tell you some boy, Me and you don't really know
each other, but you and I. This is the fun.
This is the craziest, is the crazy of the world.
Jar Roule, Yo, you gotta be quiet, man role. I
moved from Left Frack to West Ars, New Jersey. Right

(01:12:53):
jar rule? Also all right rule? Also who's the west
a rich New Jersey? From there? Jab moved saddle Brook
correct side the river, out side side the river, live
next to you. And then me and you somehow both

(01:13:16):
moved to Miami, and they connected us and said we
all lived like him and Joab state around. Just to
break it down for people that do understand that him
and John stayed around, lived next to each other. Then
me and joall living next to each other to me
and so we all at some point then as we're
living next to each other, we all got kids around
the same age, so they all working with each other,

(01:13:37):
and we get close, you know what I'm saying, And
we started dealing with each other's situations. You know, we're
coming to each other, because that's really when I was
down here, you know what I'm saying. I mean, really,
you know, going through everything relationship, problems, problems with ship,
we had just with everything we were. We we would
talk because we really we both came down here like
it's not like we was in the same boat. Yeah,

(01:13:58):
we wanted we wanted to. We want to say, get
over right exactly, get away, you know what I'm saying,
So you know what I mean. So we would confide
each other in a lot. You know about you is
when I'm when I'm negative, you would be positive I'm positive.
And that was we could they were talking. Man, Yeah,
it was dope. You don't say, but that's how we

(01:14:21):
got to be so cool really because we all spend
time with each other. And then when you spend time
with each other, it's just not you're gonna tell him
what do you want to hear. You're gonna tell him
what you think it's best for him, because that's the
best type of friend. You know what I'm saying. You
know what I mean. You don't tell them what they
want to hear, and tell him what's best of you,
even if they don't get matted. Fucking we don't talk
for a week, two weeks, Fucking I gotta say that

(01:14:42):
because I care about you know what I'm saying it's
the same thing with all of us. Everybody makes a
noise for that. You still around. Take a shot, Take
a shot as so you know you actually hear. I
thought she was gonna like make up scoose. I'm just
gonna like act like, look, this is all met that Zeno,

(01:15:05):
change your fucking rabbit. Yeah, yeah, chase your rap, Zeno
drink Yeah, I pressed my friend fucking rabbit rap. Yeah,
chase your rap. I don't drink, but you know, you
know when it has to be done. Huh. If you know,
you know what I should sucking Rabbi listen, that's amad.

(01:15:25):
Just say you know what's that that this is playing? Um?
Oh it is I thought, oh, I thought that was
Dave's come. I was like, oh, you're just going hard.
That's gonna chang and check off. I was like, chasing
my rabbit. That's a nonsense. You know. I gave no
sixty five dollars check for the first and that never
came out. Wait, wait, sixty five stats for first that

(01:15:48):
never can get to this story? Wait up, wait up,
yo yo, what kind of hard you don't even do it?
How did this story happen? No, it was just he
was hot as funk. I wanted the verse from him,
had the money, and I know we was in California

(01:16:11):
after the Steve was sucking with him, you know what
I'm saying. So probably Steve by the hooked it up.
And then man, he just came up and I never
forget gave it to him, spent the version and bounce,
and I was like, we just say too much to
each other. You just got the sixty five bands and
kept moving. We just never I just never used the
verse or nothing. You know what I'm saying. It's around
a better face on YouTube somewhere. Okay, so you did

(01:16:31):
use the word, but nothing to put out to get solden.
Just like I don't know you, I don't know. You
gotta start looking out for yourself. Now his verse, I
don't care if it's from then to now, it's at
least from twenty to sixty bands. It's always worth sixty five.

(01:16:53):
So how hot was he at that time? He killed
the verse? But you know, but but like the Boston Niggers,
you know what I mean, let me ask you all
that shot your ship, all that project, something like the
thing about it if a new artist came out and
now I'm not talking about then. I mean, I'm not
talking about now. I'm talking about then, Like if aw,
what is that noise? What is that keeping hearing? What

(01:17:13):
is somebody clicking something? Still? All right? Tell him need
to shut the funk up. Listen, So thinking is drinking.
We drink ball and then we got wind. Would we
go and eat and caught your bar or windwood tavern
or wind stats go with drinking. They could have a
couple of average drinking. He's now listen. You know you're

(01:17:48):
my friend. We're clothes. I come to a crib one
day living a diplomat. Give me your world just number,
gave me a wright. I'm running right in had we're
hanging out with barbecuing. You're the first person the green
park in the house. Yeah, I bought a big park shoulder.

(01:18:12):
I didn't even know that shoulder with Atlanta orange and
you you baste it. I thought he was playing. It
was like, I'm bringing a park shoulder, right, Hi, I
forgot on the park he running on like it was like,
you know, he wanted me to keep in the living room.
He didn't want to keep it. He was like the

(01:18:34):
smells of the right right, let's get you what would
happened that day? Like that's what you're into the park shoulder,
you know, I mean, you know what I'm saying, Like
the melt. I'm sure we've got some fellows in their
sucking pop, but you'll be on it off. You be
on it off. I've been like four years in your
blood you put away. Yeah, it was like it was

(01:18:55):
like eating that park no more. He wasn't eating bee
Pocus the food of the gods. Talk about it, man,
Let me tell you can listen to this show to
take every piece of port and make that ship taste good. Man.
This is how you know, Like I know that Randy
Aka and Dave Mays is the blackest Jewish people we know,
neither wanted to know celebrated pass Over yesterday. Let's make

(01:19:17):
some noise for that. It was the week before. No
we went to we went to and did he wait wait,
didn't we go to the Let me tell. Let's listen,
let's tell how powerful Jewish people is. We went to
the w hotel to Jewish people. Yeah. I can usually

(01:19:39):
do around as mom. You gott keep a Jewish guy around,
that's around. That's a rule. You got Jis guy around.
But let me just tell you how crazy it was.
We went to the W Hotel. We're filming the full show,
which is W Hotel for a Dum said, I can't
from my negls heard. So we went to the W
Hotel and fat Lauder that's a man and Um we
try to use the bad for me. It was like

(01:20:00):
they've rented it out for ten days for Passover, so
nobody else can rent it out. I've never seen no
other races to you, let's make some noise for the
Jewish people for keeping the Jewish No, no, they said
that a whole W hotel, they're all out. There's nothing
but coucier food being served. There was no alcohol for

(01:20:20):
those days, correct. It was like, you know, it was
the ball open. It was like, no, it's passed over.
Is anybody in there Jewish over the day? Let's make
a noise that they've been the only Jewish guy come on,
so spends you know on day. But I'm gonna start
with you, Dave, because you know, is there anything you
regret besides the internet, because we got to that, is
there anything you ever regret that you can't have no regrets?

(01:20:44):
You know what I mean? No regrets. That's a real
nigger ship. Let makes some noise to day being black ship.
Right there? You got any regrets? Man, I can't think
of anything. You know what I'm saying. Probably probably you know,
of course you want to be smart about it. You
know what I'm saying. I probably gotta be smart. But
we ate him in here. But but but still body listens.

(01:21:04):
But if you look back, But if you look back
and you could say, yeah you could if you not
even it's about yourself when you look at your kids
and you look at their futures. You know what I'm
saying that you start have to be about music and
music musically yeah, musical, but like like you know, like
in the business musically now you know, I mean to
be honest, I think I never got a real shot
because of all the controversy of my music. Like people

(01:21:26):
don't know that I produced the intro on NASA Stalematic
album Wait Time Out. I'm saying, you know I still man,
it's the Train over Lion, you know what I'm saying.
Stacy lot of Sart joining produced. That's the Hangmen three.
You see that me two times? JP like yeah that

(01:21:48):
right now? Yeah, man, let's get as mad As Robs.
You're not, you know, hold on, I shoulder to my career.
I don't even know if those are your pok rinds. Ain't.
I'm not anybody because that's the ball. That's the ball
they offer those. Let me let me see if they

(01:22:11):
had Fisher Park ground. Yeah, yeah, yeah, because it's a ball,
you know. Usually. Welcome to play a new podcast network
featuring radio and TV personalities talking business, sports, tech, entertainment,
and more. Play it at play dot It. We're back

(01:22:34):
to Drink Champs Radio with Rapper and R and d J. Then, so, boy,
how did you produce that? How did who called you?
Ste out? Again? Steve got through? Steve. You're getting a
lot of love on my show. We've done a lot
of ship with Steve and Steve, you know our relationships.

(01:22:55):
I'm allowing the love to be spread. But all that
telling of America ships, Eve, what happened with Tanta America,
I'm not you're failing that. I've never seen it. There
was no American man, There's there's ain't no tanning of
American man. I don't believe in that, man, you know
what I'm saying, tann of American. I'm sure, Steve to
Stephen means that the white agencies and the white companies

(01:23:19):
are now except accepting certain black but you know, right,
but that's bullshit because they really ain't, you know what,
cause they really ain't working with us. See, it's us
that that that got the juice. It's the middleman and
the middleman above then we usually get them credit for it.
That's just how it is. So that's what tannic means,

(01:23:41):
the tanning of a memor. I didn't see that ship.
I have no idea what we're talking. He rose and
big Big, I guess, but he knows our relationship and
I'm not dissing them. So this is this is a
wonderful thing, man, But you you don't agree with that.
Don't get what the handa? What was you talking before that? America?

(01:24:02):
It was something before that style. You know. It's like
the song still Madics. So how did who called you to?
We probably did it through Steve, but but the el
is that we also produced the one with you and
Prodigy that win gold? Right now, okay, double classic album?
We need? How did this call happen? What did they

(01:24:24):
asked you to do? An intro? We gave some beats
and and Eli s Ellie and we get shout out
to d j Eli s Man. Was Elis who gave
Elis the beats? You know what I'm saying. Let now
it's here. That's when they wanted. Wasn't the guy at
that time, So it wasn't Steve. It was Elis. My
mother's steak. It was Elis. And that's not the reason

(01:24:45):
you got five mics. No, now I should have got
five mics. No that that album was, Come on, it's
still maddic. I don't think I'm saying man still maddic.
It was still hitting money then that was a double
God damn man, I thought you said about that's why
my that was classic. That's still magic. I'm thinking crazy,

(01:25:12):
Are you crazy? That's my first um source UM article magazine.
I ever, boy, I could never be more proud of
to be from Queens at that very moment um because
I have remember seeing Nash in Brooklyn Queen's Day back
in the days we should do something called Brooklyn Queen's
Day and Flushing Meadow Plargue and I've seen I was

(01:25:34):
booked to perform and he came out and did live
at the barbecue and he came out with this dude
with you know, um we call him Fisherman's they killed it,
you know what I mean? And then um, they was
doing all this crazy ship. So that's the you know,
for me to see that as a chap go to jail.
She this same kid got five mics. I didn'tnew what

(01:25:54):
the mic system meant because I was an Outcast fan
of Outcast was the only other people I've seen prior
to that, I believe, because something kept Playlistic, Cadillac whatever,
whatever that album is came out, came out before Illmatic, correct,
because I think that came out. He want to google
that came first? Whatever? Who got five mics? Maybe? Well,

(01:26:19):
whoever got five mics before that? Get NAS got five
mix And I was in the jail walking through because
at that time in the jail I was in, it
was either Buckshall Shorty or not. Obviously I was on NAS.
I did like Buckshot Shorty, and he wound up his
baby mother black Moon. Excuse me, his big mother was
actually from Left Rack, So I wounded up being cool

(01:26:40):
with him. But in the jail at that time, it
was like you either NASA or black Moon, And obviously
I picked the nine side, and wind of that article
came out. I just walking through the jail. It was
the and care Rest. We had care Wrests on the
show and Caress said that he basically said, well, if
that didn't come out, you know, he said queens Bridge,

(01:27:03):
which which um, he said, Queen's Bridge would have never revived.
But he didn't understand that. What he meant was Queens
might They're not never revived, So that that yeah, but
but but but there was a lot of album from
that album restored the pride, the pride the I don't

(01:27:25):
even know the other way he restored like us to
be like, you know, walk outside and go go eat
in Brooklyn and go eating and whatever. But it all
started from when people seeing that he got five months
five and then you did abouly the wonderful story of
the producers. You remember that or all the producers that
was involved like that was that was legendary. Like, um,

(01:27:49):
journalism isn't conducted like that. No, it's not that serious. Normal,
it's not that serious because everything, everything, even music is faster.
So what you think about that? I mean, you know
the way I look at it, I mean, you know
you have it's it's just the sign of the times.

(01:28:10):
You know, everything is fast. I mean, the good thing
is that we lived in those times. So I just
appreciate that I know those times just because it ain't
here no more. I don't mean you can't still celebrate
because you've been. You know, we're celebrated right now. That's
what we're doing on Drink Yo. Man, let me just
tell you, man, h the ride. Look at that. I

(01:28:34):
just I really need to eat the pot rinding on
my show. People, you know this is sunny DVD. Join you.
I'm gonna get your five with the ball. Fan with
the ball. I'm gonna get you with the ball, y'all.
You don't know why because funk don't goes down. The
mother's just punch you like you don't. Just good, give

(01:28:58):
me a hot five with the book you get rid
of the ball. I'm gonna say that. I don't. I
don't mind. So Chris, I feel like he was gonna
go when we were talking about the eminem situation, like
I felt like you was gonna say something like he
was going in the direction of saying that you didn't
have no problem and wasn't no problem with him, because

(01:29:18):
I really don't understand him. It was just a gun.
You know. MTV was just taking on the hip hop
and I felt like, you know, big, this is where
hip hop can finally, you know what I'm saying, start
getting some money. You understand, Look when drugs and guns ravage,
and I say this the communities. Hip hop was there
to give nigga's a job, you know, like niggas was

(01:29:39):
making money off of hip hop. Man, that's a d
M x DMX rappers whack. He sometimes he supported him
because this rapper is giving at least six to eight
people a job. My nigga, you come out of jail
back then a good a job. You know. They ain't
like that normal, you know. So it's just the fact
that I just felt like they wanted to use a

(01:30:03):
situation where the the white audience had its own image,
you know, to really be at a high level of
hip hop. What I was saying, the white people are
already buying into the hoods in the black and Latino
communities with hip hop. They don't need, we never need.

(01:30:25):
Like Beastie Boys was the ship. Nobody gave a funk
if there was white, black purple like you didn't see
hip hip hop made it where you didn't see no color.
When Eminem came he's a white rapper. You know what
I'm saying that they did that. I did the white
rapper immediately, but you see, it has nothing to do
it has see because the effects of that. I knew

(01:30:48):
the effects of that, of what it is. Now the
kids twitter me now like who's thirteen, twelve years old
or a three? Oh fake gal Pacino? Ah, you Eminem
killed you. I'm like, you know, nigga, you don't even know.
And then my usic like like little man, you don't
even know it's music. You're just taking on what you've
seen on YouTube and automatically gravitating to that black against

(01:31:08):
white ship like oh he's Eminem. And issue your issue
was it wasn't an issue with me. The issue was
I felt that that they were using his situation all
right to separate hip hop to like you know what
I'm saying, to separate hip hop from the audience, you know,

(01:31:30):
from from from white black audience. I mean I didn't then,
of course, you know Jimmy ivenfousand now Jimmy, Jimmy when
when you know, we was when all this was going on,
we had met with Jimmy a couple of times. And
you know what I'm saying, Jimmy didn't want the problem.
You know, Jimmy and I had actually done deals with Jimmy. Yeah,
it was cool. It was cool, man, It was so

(01:31:52):
what was like, I just knew what that was with
me was again, I was just this repor that was like, look,
you know, because you gotta remember, these kids had came
up out of nowhere. These was his boys that came
to the magazine with the tape. They had been trying
to sell the tape. Yeah, oh, the guys from Detroit. Yeah,

(01:32:14):
they had to tape. You know. I was in Puerto
Rico and Dave called me. Was like, these dudes in
the office like on the next flight and they had
been trying to sell the tape for over a year. Now.
This was his boy, right, And do you believe like
the story? We like that he said he said it
was only happened because he had a black girlfriend. It's not,
it's not it's not for me. Yeah, I don't go on, man,

(01:32:37):
you know what I'm saying, Wait, wait, wait, hold on?
What was made up that story that was that he
had a black girlfriend? Car So you you did the
research and you absolutely we did a lot of research
when we did it Home story, Yeah, and that was absolutely.
This is crazy. Nobody, I don't think nobody never knew that.
I mean, come on, man like, but it's cool. It's cool. Man.

(01:33:01):
He was a great guy. Met him. I met him once.
It's cool. That's what it wasn't you know, when you
really get down to it. We never met each other
to make it personal. So I mean, I mean, of course,
when when when you're going back and forth on record,
you're gonna take shots at each other. That's what everybody do.
He was used to separate the culture and to you know,

(01:33:23):
take it, you know, with the the white audience always
was the largest audience of hip hop, going back to
the eighties run see you again, of me of the
buyers of those albums, albums was white people. They was

(01:33:45):
there the whole time. But eminem was used as a
way to take those who white people and instead of
making them, instead of making them the followers of the
culture and the followers of the streets. Okay, now those
people are used to basically control and dictate the culture

(01:34:06):
to where the streets don't have no say no more.
That's pretty much what eminem corporate radio comes in. Now,
they can just cater to that and then separate the audience.
But is there a problem with that? Like, of course
there is because that takes that takes money out of

(01:34:27):
the hood. But the same the same people who are
buying from the hood and don't have to normal. But
who is they when you say that they are using him?
Is it the same people that j College talk about.
They don't want you to win, they don't want you
to water your plants, they don't want you to smoke weed.
Is that the same days? I don't know. I just

(01:34:48):
know what that. Look the people, the movers and shakers
in this industry right here that control the vehicles. You know,
I'm saying that the ones you know who who who
you know? Big money, take no money, big bag, take
little bank. You know what I'm saying, monopoly and everything else.
Whatever you're gonna think, whatever you thought about it, how
you think about it. You know what I'm saying. Folks

(01:35:10):
always bought into hip hop. I'm gonna switch the subject
a little bit because you're a pillar of hip hop.
Both of you, guys, they're both are legends. You guys
are still talking. You very dispect you leaving hum very just.
I got perfect friends and pologized. But it's been a
controversy going on right now right what's what African bamboo? Right?

(01:35:34):
Caress One is on our show. I want to defend
carrerass One because I got get some more brother. Yeah,
so I had caress One on the show. I asked
Harris One about the African banbada thing. Caress One, I
don't want to say he dodged the question. He just said,
that's my man. And once she said that's my man,

(01:35:56):
I kind of got uncomfortable and I switched the subject.
Plus after that. Before that, I was giving care of
us mad my ties to get him drunk, similar to
the how I'm doing with you right now. You're drinking
Hennessy and drinking park grinds. The first person I'll to
eat ball, Goddamn, it makes no noise for you know,
the first person to bring balk shoulder to my career,

(01:36:18):
but not the first person to eat ball on the
Ring Chance podcast. What do you think about the African man?
Bout the situation? Both of you guys, I don't even
know the situation. Okay, all right, me need to do
I don't you don't you know, I mean, I don't
know what the situation. You finish, what you're done, you're starting.

(01:36:42):
Don't you be getting it? Come on, tell me a situation. Man.
If you ain't know it, then you know I'm not.
I'm not bringing in a situation. I'm come on, help
me out. You gotta do you know not on that
not of that situation. Let's tear it up. So the unsigned, hype,
the mic system, the source of worlds, the algor, the

(01:37:02):
joint with you on Mario winning, all of that. You
did love in hip hop? I mean rock the party
was we had a couple of we had a couple
of shows, Rocket party. What what was out when that was?
When it's loving hip hop thing? It wasn't presented to me.

(01:37:23):
It wasn't okay, It just I was giving Stevie was
staying with me, I was riding to the set, were
staying together, you know, in Atlanta, and righting to said
just chilling. And then you know they asked me um
basically like you know, because I was talking to him
already he has Michael, and I was just like yo,
you know, you know, you just try to be monogamous

(01:37:45):
and ship then it was like one woman, right, and
then it was like what you said on camera? And
I was like, yeah, I say it on camera. They
miked me up and I was the first time I
was on and I did that driving sea with him
because you know what I'm saying, I was never casting
for it then. So so what happened? Why why you
not owned up? But hip hop? No more? What is that?
I mean, it was a situation that happened, you know
at the reunion you know, okay, you know where you

(01:38:08):
know the last part snuff y'alls, like, let's just going
out there. She is that what happened? A little bit?
She trying to snuff your wife. Listen, every man and
every world nigger in the world will will do the
same thing. No, of course, you know, yeah, I'm gonna

(01:38:29):
protect my right. It's not like you're a woman. But
that's not that's not nothing like that. That's not what
I'm saying. No, no, no, she's kind of you know,
I'm choking on right. So why there's so many people
who did so much worse things? And love and hip hop?
Why do you do you think you're being? Like, just look,

(01:38:51):
Love and hip hop was a great situation for me. Um,
you know, like I said, it was something that I
didn't know I was gonna be a part of. You know,
I didn't bunch of seasons. A lot happened to me
on that I got shocked, you know. Oh year, yeah
you remember that's crazy. My mom's past, God bless yea. Yeah,
but that lot you say, yeah, So it's like a
lot happened in those years just in my life. So

(01:39:13):
it was you know, love and hip hop was deep. Um,
you know, love and hip hop was you know, shout
out to love and hip hop. Man, I got you
know what I mean, Like you know what I mean?
Like recently, ain't me talking? Man and Stevie was just
back in the studio. You and Stevie. The crazy thing
is you know how your your boy call you and

(01:39:36):
your boys say, you know, he's like I always. I
know your guys are brothers like y'are gonna. I know
it's different, but you know what I'm saying, Like, I know,
you guys got a lot of love for each other.
You know what I'm saying. Do you think it was
loving hip hop who separated y'all? Or you think yeah?
I mean, you know what I mean? Money or no,

(01:39:57):
not never the money because me and Sleeves ain't like
out with us. It was definitely a situation with with
with the you know, he was under presciures his situation.
I was underprecious my situation. Things happened, you know, things happen,
Things happen in relationships and family. And you know what
I'm saying that I don't think, you know, I don't know, man,
I just don't think like I don't think. You know,

(01:40:18):
when you do reality TV, man, you can like really
try to hold it against somebody, because man, people do
things just for the for these for these things, for
the cameras, and it's like, you know, you gotta know that,
you know, if the cameras wasn't there with it to
be like that, there's no excuse for it, you know
what I'm saying. So how did you guys work it out?

(01:40:39):
It's just man, just gonna take time. Man, you say
it wasn't you know what I mean? Time? Hells all?
You know what I'm saying. I mean both of us
understood what happened, and you know, like where where we
stood with each other, like we don't that was unfortunate?
What what what took place there, and it was unfortunate
took place on camera and ship. Like when you ask
me if I regret things, I regret that. Okay, let's

(01:41:01):
make some noise for that, goddamn because because another thing
is like I didn't bring out there on love hip
hop for none of that ship to be fighting and
all that. Like, I'm not with none of that, to
be honest, I'm really not with that because you know,
we fight enough off camera, the fun out whole guys,
why are we gonna go on camera? You know what
I'm saying. Not no, so I don't you know what
I'm saying. It's just it just it just it was unfortunate. Man,

(01:41:23):
it was something that happened. You know. Guys had the
seven five seven group, right, yeah, seven fifty seven, Yeah,
rest of the piece, Big Cap too, did Cat Cat
get Big Cap? We love you? My brother Cap Cap
had hosted the seven fifty seven tape that on that
piff you go at that Piffe downloaded? Yeah, So that

(01:41:47):
he passed away and then you guys come back together.
That this was crazy about it because we wasn't together.
He was he was like, yo, let me just put
the music out, and he said, yo, I ran to
Stevie and he said he's here. That's cool. When I
was like, word this cause that we can put it out,
that's dope. Mind you. Me and Steven wasn't talking two years,
you know. And you guys were not only like the
first people with the magazines and let the culture, not

(01:42:10):
the first people were doing compilations under the coach. I
remember you guys were the first people to own studios.
I remember you own a studio in Manhattan. Was that
called the Source? You own a big studio. I remember
you asked me to do a verse or something or
come meet you. And I came there. You know, the
actually called me. I walked through. You guys had like

(01:42:33):
they had to be like five million dollar studio. You
walked in, you had blue carpet. It was I walked through.
I know, I was like mad. We rolled up. I
was like, yea, I'm gonna go outside and smoke. He
was like, Cass, I've spoke for what spoken? Yeah, Like,
you guys had all type of endeavors. Man, what's the
next endeavor that you guys, Dave Mays and Ben Zino

(01:42:53):
is gonna do? You really want to know, man, I
really want to know manfact, your named this album on
our on our podcast, give us something bad, because one
of us goes, you know, crab traps everywhere, but you
haven't talked about that, Benzino, crab traps in every city
and my sauce and every supermarket. Let's do it make

(01:43:14):
noise to sound bad? I don't know we're a madman.
It's not wo man as I mean to say, sauce everybody. Yeah,
it doesn't make it bad, it doesn't make it better. So, um,
how did you come up with like me? I mean
for the lamest, that's what you say, right, layman, for

(01:43:35):
the layman, Like I knew, like one time Zeno King
of the Crib. You know what I'm saying, it was
something going on with it. Oh that's just straight parapple
all right? This this ain't for straight parapple drinks because
there's no more around. I'm gonna hit this armor down, man,
go on, let me finish. So I knew you had

(01:43:57):
love for cooking, right, but most people who got love
for basketball doesn't mean they're gonna play in the NBA.
What made you take this risk with this restaurant? I
mean it was like a little risk. You know, crabs
is low risks. I was only gonna do crabs. You
know what I'm saying. Yeah, So I mean it was
like a little small place I had been. Dave turned

(01:44:19):
me onto the little Korean spot over there, Big Joy.
It was in the same strip, Modest, Big Joy, Mariotta.
It was already kind of built out as a restaurant,
a little small spot like fifty square feet. So I said, man,
it's perfect little crab spot. But the whole thing was
I had to develop these sauces for it. I just
wasn't gonna do like a crab old bass season. And

(01:44:40):
you know what I'm saying I want to do is
I want to take it further. So it was like, um,
I developed the sauces. The first one was like the
Zeno sauce because I heard you win somewhere like l
A and you've seen yeah La. It was like these
Koreans like that's like they do crabs differently, where like
they incorporate sauces with it. So I said, well, if
I put my own twist all the sausage, see what

(01:45:02):
happens to me. About four months to really like what
Nelson was saying, did you think he was crazy when
he wanted to go into the crab business. You guys
are in the compilations. You guys are in the source
of world. You guys are into music. You guys are
into and now you want to sell fool like did you?
I mean, he always wanted to do something like this.

(01:45:24):
This is not He was always into had something on
Miami Beach, remember that too, But he was he was
certain about it was going to be. Remember, no, no,
I got Pepper space. It's crazy. It's like it's like
a rose just got hot. I walked in the club.

(01:45:44):
This is what was it called, you know clubs? You
know y'all. Ro was there. Jo Roule invites me going there,
going there, all the six bottles of roles. I remember
they had to be at least hunted the peaks. But
I'm like, these things is doing? This was like your
birthday or jib roll birthday. I don't remember. It's birthday,
the job birthday. So I'm like, all right, cool, I'm

(01:46:05):
not accident. Next from bottles, they got us all evishly,
go to six bottles of rolls. She just came out
and then and then a fight broke out and then
Pepper sprayed the whole club. I sat there in preper suad.
Let's go said he got this game that needed too
bunch of money. My nigga, I'm drinking my bottles. I
was like, it was all my good and it was like,
you good. The whole club that I said, fuck, but

(01:46:29):
you know how crazy it is the buy bottles just
sit down and everybody else leave and you just really
want to trick your ship funk that I don't even get.
I'm saying, right here, give me one way, just ba
And that was crazy. I got preppersuade the first time
I got purpose, don't that was no best club was

(01:46:50):
no best club? What is what is there now? It's
it's it was It was American pattle. Now. That was
the second flight at the second floor. Joint was on
the second floor. That's the first plash was on the
second floor. So I just want to let y'all know,
like before we get up out of here, man, is
there anything you want to get off y'all chests? If
anything y'all want to, you know, get to the bottom line,
you know, because I know I've been messing with you.

(01:47:11):
You know, I'm just messing with you at least was jokes. No,
I mean I just know. I'm just I definitely mean,
I definitely been down to come do this. You know
what I'm saying, Brother, I appreciate that. Thank someone. Thank
you so much. Man. You guys bring in my corner forever.
I that's something I gotta say. You know, Um, you
guys been at my corner before we even messed with

(01:47:32):
each other. But we wind up living in the same building,
and it was something that it was. It was a
peer of love, you know what I'm saying, Like, Um,
there's a peer of love. It wasn't nothing like no
fake that God Like, I need to get in y'all ship,
like we're gonna handle each other. We're gonna you know.
It was again, Oh yeah, that's what. That's what. That's
what the reality show people were, you know what I'm saying.

(01:47:55):
So it's the one thing, one thing I definitely need
to know because don't y'all remember when we met that
I wanted the documentary with y'all. Oh yeah about this,
and you know, I'm glad we're finally here doing this,
but this is not a good fun. When is a
real serious documentary the legacy of the source, because that
needs to happen now can't you do that or you

(01:48:16):
would have to clear that? Um do they own it?
They would have to be a joint clearance because they
own the name now, so if it was to be
like a thing, they would have to clear the name
of us. We have to call it the force, right, oh,
the creators of the soul you want? I mean, But
I don't think Londa would have a problem with that,
you know what I mean? How about you calling the
history I think the culture needs and as all us

(01:48:38):
Source longdel has to be involved probefully, you know, because
no problem with that. You know, it makes sense to
do it like chronicles because we ain't got no be
for nobody. But at the end of the day, the
history is what it is. Everybody's gonna have their opinions.
But the way I look at it's over now. You
people gotta put that ship behind the move Now. Should

(01:49:01):
there be a Source magazine story? Of course? Of course? Yeah,
I'm saying of course it should be because um, I mean,
and I'm not trying to start any controversial things. Do
you ever just look at the source now and be like, damn,
I'm upset how they took it like and not no, no,
not only because of of of of how every other

(01:49:24):
magazine like The Source really is the last at your
sales going vibes going. I mean like Russell Simmonds. Russell
Simmons is one of my icons', one of my idols.
But when it didn't Comere really make the sauce cover. Yeah,
I think she did, Like that's not what y'all was
on there. I think she did. She did. She was

(01:49:45):
one of the first ones after we had got Yeah. Yeah,
after y'all did yeah, after because David we was doing
right with Mary sitting on the ice. Yeah, iconic joint
like Biggie over the buildings, iconic d you know, to
the man with the ship all up in his nose,

(01:50:08):
Like you know what I'm saying when you see like
when you see like the putting like sports figures or
like people who are models on the cover, Like are
you disappointing? Yeah? Yeah, but I'm just saying, like the
original sort like when you look at it now, like
you walk through an airport, you're telling man, I don't
look at it. Just doesn't It's it's a different time,

(01:50:29):
you know, there ain't really I don't look at no
magazines honestly, like hip hop Weekly fits fits the format
of Today, but any other magazine like that, it's just
a different time. Now. Everything is internet phone you know
what I'm saying. Everything seems to be internet and phone.
Hip Hop Weekly works because of the format of how
US weeklies you know of like US weeklies and everything.

(01:50:51):
But you know, I just don't look at it like that. No.
I mean, even if even if it was, I just don't.
It's not in a time where it could shine anyways. Source,
you know what I mean, It just don't. So I
know I kind of asked you this in a different way.
So what's the new move man? Are you gonna stick
with reality? Are you gonna uh continue with the with

(01:51:11):
the magazine, or you guys are gonna do some phenomenal
thing to change the culture again it's been You're about
to celebrate thirty years and well, look we need another
I'm saying hip Hop Weekly, TV, hip hop weely TV
definitely me and out thing is about to um do
your own show. Um that it's the first time you

(01:51:31):
heard about that. I can't cancel on that work. I can't,
but I can take that makes a noise. But we
don't know, But I don't know but we still can't
make a noise TV. We don't well we spread in
the room, but we spread in the room. Don't got
his own TV. I'm still don't. I'm still you're still working.
I'm still working with Carlos King on next fifteen, season

(01:51:52):
two on TV one looking like season two years season
one success. And you know we're just crab trap man.
And you know what I'm saying that sind you ever
think you'll be doing reality went back from back then?
No hell, no help. You know, if you if you
still have the source being on top, you probably be
like reality is not reality, not because it's reality TV

(01:52:14):
is all what you make it. See, it's it's you know,
if you if you make yourself a fool, you will
be gonna be You're gonna be looked on as a fool.
But you know what I'm saying, By at the end
of the day, like you as long as you are
who you are, and if you don't mind who you
are and and and comfortable with who you are, then
you could do reality TV. Well let's make a noise
for you know, being political. You're right, you've been the

(01:52:39):
brains behind the operation for ever. You would like being
you like you like you know what I mean by that?
It's like, you know what alcohol, this thing is bred
all the chaser. He's a foul guy. He's my brother.
He's also folk show. But um so I don't want

(01:53:04):
to say people do something over because that's kind of corny.
But um what you think this next big endeavor that
you you want to do yourself? Now? I mean what
I mean, like not what I was, you know what
I mean, just just the next big idea for you?
What you think is that because you was the guy
who invested in the internet and then people didn't believe

(01:53:24):
who it didn't work at that time. But guess what,
the Internet is working now. So that makes you nor Thomas,
what is your next idea? You know, I think it's
still that there's not there's not a voice for the
culture in South there and and the culture is powerful
because you know, you have what they call the millennials,

(01:53:45):
which is the millennials make it happen, right, Well, that's
that's the demographic that that all corporations are gonna be
targeting for the next twenty or thirty years. And there's
ninety five million of them. There was seventy eight million
baby boomers. You heard of the baby boomers, I've never
heard of where they were. They were the biggest largest

(01:54:06):
previous generation in American baby boomers. Yes, yes, any hip
hop that's that's really where to to be a voice
for them. I think we think me a d G
has filled that voice for the villenniums. Not on y'all level.
We can never like the thing about it is a
lot of people, a lot of people. They big up

(01:54:29):
all podcasts because there's nineties stories and there's ninety babies
that listen to it. But I could honestly say that
I could never make the impact of the sources ever made.
I could never make a system like I tried to.
You know this drinking competition that we just had, you know,
do we we try to do that. We're all guests.
It's not like the fives. I'm trying to thank you Davy.

(01:54:52):
He's a positive guy, man, how five day he's my friend, man.
But this just makes a noise for motherfucking the original.
So let's make some noise. Rousino drinking all the tracers,
so now we gotta drink straight. So, man, guys, I
want to I can't thank you're enough. Man. I know
you guys didn't have to do that. I know you
guys didn't have to fly in from l A. I

(01:55:14):
know you guys didn't have to stop from whatever you
guys are doing. I really appreciate it because people um that.
Our listeners, they love these nineties stories, these eighties stories,
these two thousand stories, these two thousands and ten stories,
and these hip hop stories, and that's where we cater to.
We're not trying to get the guy who's hot. We're
not trying to get the guy who's on his press run.
We're not trying to get the guy who's just happened

(01:55:36):
to be around. We're trying to get legends who have
real stories. And you guys came, you participated. You never
stopped us one second. As you don't sweat it for
a minute. He jumped off the camera for a man
that he didn't stop. He came in. It has been
a good sport and that's what this is all about.
This is not about. This is about us getting together,
getting drunk and telling stories. And you guys did what

(01:55:57):
you had to do, and I can't thank you man. Yeah, yeah,
you gotta do it. Is there anything else any of
you want to say I would like, man, Man, there
was a pleasure pleasure here and it's gonna be a
part and it's gotta be a yeah. But but but
also let me thank you for um uh, you know

(01:56:19):
you're the first guy who's on my food and on
the podcast. You know say go play once too. I
thought about it. Lay was to you know what I'm saying,
but you're doing it live, then play. But um, I
can't thank you guys enough man for let me into
your life. You know, um, I do it with league.
We play around with the stories and you guys are

(01:56:41):
a great sport man. And what you guys could contribute
it to hip hop could never be replicated. Just in
case you guys didn't know, the things that y'all gave
to hip hop, things that you gave to me personally
is personally appreciated. I'm glad that I could later on
in life call you guys my friends because you gave
me love before you even knew me. And I'm glad

(01:57:02):
that after we guys we knew each other, we continue
our relationship. And I appreciate you guys being a part
of this podcast. Brother, you know what I'm saying. I
appreciate it the original source, the Goose. Let's not just
focusing on me for a second. This is the dudes
that made something that people call a hip hop bible.
I don't care what you're doing hip hop. I don't

(01:57:23):
give a funk what you try to replicate. I don't
give a funk what you try to make. This is
nothing that people are gonna call it the hip hop bible,
my motherfucker. And listen, this is what I think. This
is what I think. In a hundred years, the original
Source magazines will be read like a hip hop bible.
That's what I think. God bless you, motherfucker. Good night,

(01:57:46):
God bless you. Motherfucker's we gotta some some touching ship.
And they stood here and they took the heat. It's
going down, drink chat podcast fun. I'm just going into
let's go with in m
