Let's go back. I want to go back to when
I met you, I Bred Goldstein. I met you on
a show called Ted Lasso. I was directing the second
episode of the series.
Speaker 2 (32:58):
He's under s applause down.

Yeah, it was called Biscuits. It was the one about
the biscuits. And I thought, I think our audience would
love to know this unique story about how you got cast, because,
for those of you who don't know, Brett was hired
by Bill because they had this relationship you just mentioned
as a writer on Ted last. So Bill really thought
Brett was very talented as a writer, and he wanted
(33:21):
obviously some English perspective on the story. So Brett, tell us,
how tell the audience how that happened? Because you were
not in any way up for the part of Roy Kent,
and you did something that I think is really courageous
and ballsy and an inspiration to other creative people out there.
Speaker 4 (33:41):
What happened was we were writing the show and I
sort of secretly thought about episode five, randomisode five. I
was like, oh, I think I know Roy Kent. I
know what I really felt a cooling, like I think
I'm meant to be Roy Kent, but I also know
no one's thinking of me for this, and it is
an embarrassing thing to ask in the writer's room, and
(34:02):
if I ask to even audition, it's going to make
everyone uncomfortable. Whatever's going to feel embarrassed and awkward because
also no one's thinking of me in this way. So
when we finished the writers room, I did a self tape.
I filmed five scenes and I was flying back to
England and I emailed Bill and I said, look, I
secretly think I could be Roy Kent, but I know
(34:24):
this is really awkward. Here's a tape. If it's shit,
pretend you never got it. I will never ask you
about it. This is between us. But if it's good
here at Peguy. And when I landed in London, I
had an email from Bill saying this.
Speaker 1 (34:41):
Is fucking brilliant and oh my god. It was very exciting,
very but that was so that was so vulnerable and
ballsy of you, because you know it could have gone
the other way where he was like, oh great, and
then you then somebody else gets the part and you're
there and you feel like you put yourself out there,
but it didn't pay off.
Speaker 4 (34:59):
Well, well, it was like, what's the worst case. The
worst cause scenario is the worst guy scenario because I
thought it for it is that he feels so uncomfortable
that if there's a season two I don't get asked
back to write on it because he doesn't want to
ever see me again. Yeah, that was the worst case.
But then on the other hand, I always think of
(35:20):
these things, well, have you got to lose? It doesn't matter,
nothing matters. It may as well, you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (35:25):
But that attitude, which I think is an inspiration to
people out there listening, whether they're going to make that
courageous choice or not, changed your entire life. I mean,
the decision of you to really send on that email
which was ballsy and which was vulnerable, and which was
courageous and to chutzpah changed your entire life, which I
(35:45):
just think is so inspirational on the people.
Speaker 4 (35:48):
I mean, you don't know, you didn't. I didn't know that.
Like I said, that's the other thing. Is the reality, true, true,
true reality. I've made loads of stuff, I've made this pilot,
We've done it honestly, honestly, the pilot that me and
did was brilliant, Like I thought that was going to
be Remember when we like it was.
Speaker 3 (36:05):
We got close. Yeah, we got so close. It was
on the bubble of it looked like it was going
to go.
Speaker 2 (36:11):
I mean Rubin.
Speaker 3 (36:12):
Directed it too, you know it was. And we had
Rubin directing, bill writing, and then the cast was like
a bunch of young comedian type uh uh sketch so
funny like some of yes, some of the guys were
influencers and stuff, and we're doing things online and stuff
(36:34):
like that.
Speaker 2 (36:35):
Like it was really ahead of its time, and I
thought it was going to go. Man, it was like
scrubs and space to keep it one hundred with you, scrubs.
Speaker 4 (36:42):
And nastas and scrubs in a rocket factory. And when
we remember when on that last day we filmed over
a week and on the last day, I remember side
the city because I was like, I guess.
Speaker 2 (36:52):
This is it.
Speaker 4 (36:52):
Boys definitely shook my hand and he said see you
in August because we're going to be making this thing.
And I went back to England, you know, pack it
up my house. I guess I'm moving to Hollywood. Baby.
Speaker 1 (37:04):
Yeah, I never know, You never know.
Speaker 4 (37:08):
So my point is when I did the boy Ken thing,
there wasn't a part of me if if you put
all the pressure on of like this is the life change.
It was like by that stage, I didn't think anything
was going to happen, as in I thought would make
a good show and no one would see it. Well
you know what I mean, Like I didn't expect.
Speaker 1 (37:24):
I just think it's good to have the balls and
the courage to try. I wrote, I don't know, you
don't know this story, Brett, but the audience I've told
this story, but I'll tell it quickly. I wrote a
first season of Scrubs. I wrote a spec script for scrub.
Do you know the story? You know the story.
Speaker 4 (37:40):
It's one of my favorite stories.
Speaker 1 (37:42):
I'll tell it quickly for audience that doesn't know the story.
But I had such balls, I had such courage. I
had such I did such I don't know.
Speaker 2 (37:51):
You were a naive man, but.
Speaker 1 (37:54):
I was also no but I was very driven. I
didn't pay off. I didn't pay off that day, but
it would pay off in other ways throughout the course
of my career. But I wrote a whole episode of Scrubs,
and I had the balls to give it to Bill
and go, I would really like to write an episode
of the show.

Mind you.
Speaker 1 (38:10):
This is season one and.
Speaker 2 (38:12):
So three bro. Yes, it was. It was pretty early.
It was pretty No, you know what it couldn't been.
Speaker 4 (38:20):
It wasn't.

It wasn't but uh. I gave it to Bill and
he this is non exaggeration. It's gonna sound like the
cartoon movie version of this.

I gave it to Bill, and a PA brought it
to me the next morning and said, hey, I found
this on the in the parking lot and it's got
your name on it, and it had a tire track
over the title page of the of the screen and
Bill Bill Bill claims that he must have left it

on the rumor's car because he drove over it.
Speaker 3 (39:02):
I think he was making a point. I think Bill
loves you so much. I think Bill put the tire
mark over it. No, he did, and freaking I mean.
Speaker 1 (39:11):
He read it. He ultimately.
Speaker 3 (39:13):
I think he read it and said, wow, really cool.
This kid's got fucking huge balls. I got to teach
him a lesson.
Speaker 1 (39:22):
I don't think I don't think he purposely drove over it.
I think he It shows how he felt about it. Like, oh,
this fucking kid, and then forgot it on his roof.
But he did ultimately read it and he gave me
notes on it, so and then, and you know, it
did lay some foundation for what was to come, but
he wasn't ready to take me seriously at that point

as a writer.

I mean, some of the best stories are when people
take control of their destiny and take a leap, you know.
Speaker 2 (39:52):
I think that's.

Yes, that's what I'm trying to highlight about Brett Goldstein.

I say that ship, then, man, your dad around it, like, yo,
you got balls, Brett, that's the dopest ship we've heard
man to take.

To take a page out of out of Zach's book,
out of all of the really dope creators, you did
something that we all admire, and that is you took
control of your destiny and fucking made something happens.

creator and and you obviously you dipped your toe in

Well, I believe because I wasn't there then because I
was backing on this, so I believe. Then Bill took
it to Jason, and then Jason liked it, and then
they showed all the writers in the writer's room. They
went are we wrong?

And then I had to and then got said to
Apple and the thing that was the truth is that
I forget this bit. Is that actually the self tape
I've done, You know, if you like, My managers have
like a self tape room in their office. So I've
just gone to their office and they will have a
whoever's like an intern, they will have an intern read

in with you. But the intern that they had was
this Swedish guy. So I was doing my scenes with
Keeley the off camera was a Swedish man doing so
Apple eventually asked, just in case, could you do it
with a woman, just to see this sounds right? So
I had to redo it.
Speaker 1 (41:39):
I always think that's important to tell actors that I
know it's not always possible, but try and try and
read with someone who's at least a decent actor or
an ideally the right sex.
Speaker 2 (41:51):
Don't do it with your.
Speaker 4 (41:51):
Wife though, well, really, isn't your wife now?
Speaker 3 (41:55):
My wife tries to support me, and all I get is,
you're gonna do it like that.
Speaker 1 (41:59):
Oh, that's your unique situation. I just think it's when
when I when I as a director, when I watch
tapes and the person off camera is like, but there's
a fire in the house and we need to get
out as soon as possible. It's very distracting, and you're like,
you know, sometimes you can't avoid it because that's all
you got.
Speaker 4 (42:16):
But but sometimes, you know, when you watch celtices, you
know when the person off camera wants apart, when they're
really when they're like you can hear them cry really,
and you're like, we know what you do. I was ahead, No,
I was just making observation as a fan of the podcast.
(42:37):
I've never seen it, and I just Joel, do you
do you look so lovingly at the screen at all times?
Speaker 1 (42:44):
Yeah, Joel's our supports system. She's like a big hug.
She just supports us so comfortable, and then she only
she only pipes in when we've said something inappropriate that
we need.
Speaker 2 (42:53):

they were not supposed to be on the show. They
were just supposed to be producers. And we just had
so much fun talking to them. And also it was
during COVID and everything like that, so it like kind
of forced us all to really express what we were
going through and you know, what what our lives were

like at that moment, and it just made for good podcasts.

Well, we just enjoy talking to them so much, and
we're a family here, so we we love having them
be a part of it. Even though Daniel's probably off

You Then Zach then directed to Lasso and I was
a very big fan of Scrubs and I was really
nervous of meeting Zach as I was when I met
you Donald and Zach. I didn't realize it was very
very charming. It's very tall and very charming and very charismatic,
like in real life he's like you sort of, he's

very impressive, he's about very charming, and we're in the
middle of nowhere in England in this sort of quite
it's not like very nice where we filmed Richmond, and
it was like here comes Hollywood talking and we were
all all of us, the whole cast, were quite like,
we're really self conscious because we were doing read through
it's like read through episodes and suddenly there's fucking Zach

Braff from Scrubs and Garden State and everyone, all of
the cast kept nudging each other like's you is it?
And how are we going to work with this guy?

It was that's very it's very sweet of you say.
But I I met this cat asked who you know
became global sensations.

About to say, did you know when you met this
cast like this get any monster?
Speaker 1 (45:10):
I really didn't. I thought, listen, you have to understand
that other than Jason, no one was a household name.
And I thought that it was very funny. I thought
they were all super talented. I thought the show was good.
I I just didn't have any any guests at the

audience for it. I thought, you know, people who love
soccer will love this Obviously, Jason's hilarious and he's got
a huge fan base. But and I was really proud
of the way that episode came out. I thought it
was really special and and and and it had the
Bill Lawrence special, which is you're laughing and then it
breaks your heart a little. But I would never have

guessed that ted Lassa would become the global sensation that
it became.
Speaker 3 (45:59):
But when you look at it now, it really was
not only to jump off for all of the cast members,
like everybody's gone on to do great things and stuff,
but it's also like Ryan Reynolds and his partner, they
kind of owe you guys a fucking a hat or something, man,

because like they took the they took the sensation, the
global sensation that Ted last one. People who had never
watched soccer in their or sorry, football in their life
were all of a sudden watching We're watching it and
trying to understand it because they loved the characters on
ted Lasso and Ryan and his partner. They took that

momentum and that motherfucker is rich.

He is a wealthy motherfucker now because of it.

it's the only thing that's made him very ready.

this little thing, and he's right, it's you know, the
sound stages aren't fancy. It's a it's a bit of
a there was nothing glamorous about the shoot.

I also episode two you because Zach invented a camera.
I don't know if this is boring, but part of
the way the ted lights it looks is defined by
Zach Braff because O thank you. It was the episode
two is the first time you see a football scene.
And we were told suddenly on the day, oh, you're
not allowed to put any equipment on the pitch. And
(47:30):
it was like, oh shit. So Zach built a rig
with some of the guys that's these giants with the.
Speaker 1 (47:39):
Grip, with the key grip and and the DP. We
had to come up with a unique way to shoot
the soccer because they they the field is so special
and that the pitch as they call it. That the
greensmen were like, you're not putting any gear on this?
What the hell you think? And and soccer moved so
fast that you couldn't have some of the traditional ways
we would have shot something, and normally here in the
(47:59):
stage probably we'd use an electric card of some kind
or something. Anyway, so we came up with this rig
that had these big tires and it was a remote
head so the DP could operate it from the side,
and it was really fun and it was like a
unique assignment for this particular show, and then it became
one of the main tools they used to shoot the.

Same thing season three. Yeah, and it's literally a guy
like with a sort of what do you call it? Wheelbarrow?
Speaker 1 (48:26):
Well, what's cool is the run they run. It became
I can see a picture of it because I haven't
saved in my favorites because it's a it's a favorite.
But they the grips would then put on soccer cleats
and run with it so that they because obviously that
was allowed, and then it would enable it would enable
us to get amazing shots and was completely remote. The

head of the camera was completely remote controlled from the
from the side. You invented this bro Well, we have
a key grip. I don't want to take full credit
with the hold on. I'm trying to get focus for y'all.

It was sort of like I've talked about this before,
But the thing I think is interesting about ted LASSA
and its success is that I don't think there is
anything to be learned from it, as in I don't
think you can. You know how Hollywood always tries to
repeat They were like, well Ted Lasser works and we
should do that. But it's like I think it's kind
of a miracle, like as in it it didn't have

huge marketing behind it. I don't think it didn't have
It was on a new stream. Apple TV was very new,
so it wasn't like everyone had it and it was
just everywhere. It was like you had to make an
effort to find it, and it came out and it
just slowly. But it was a genuine word of mouth hit,

which is rare. It wasn't you know, pushed by It
was people who made that a hit, and there's no
nothing you can replicate about that. It just happened to
touch people at the right time. And people say, maybe
it was because of COVID and maybe at the time
the political landscape, all the reasons you can think of,
but there were so many other shows that exist at

that time, and it's just out of a you know, like.

I think it was. I looked at it as a
huge hit when it started.

I felt like it launched Apple TV kind of also
like didn't it help Apple TV all of a sudden because.

I remember, I remember, I remember somebody saying, you watching
Ted Last, So I was like, you know, my my
my old boss he created the show with and they
were like, well, have you watched it? I was like,
I haven't watched it. I don't watch much TV. And
they were like, yo, you should watch it. And then
I remember being so stuck on that fucking show, like

I watched every episode from season one to season three.
That's shit, like it was. It was one of those things.
And the great thing was that I knew you also,
and it was like, wow, look at.

you know, things start happening when you're good, things start
happening people start talking when you're good, and it was
just so good to see.

Well, and not only I felt like it was a hug,
you know, everyone was so down and COVID was so horrible,
and it just felt wholesome, and it felt like maybe
the world would not have been so open to something
so wholesome and sentimental if it weren't for those conditions.
Who knows, but I do feel like I do feel
like the culture around the earth was ready for what

ted Lasso was serving.

Yeah, And there's something I think. What's funny about ted Lasso,
and I think about it is that people feel about
it like it's a really wholesome show and that it's
sort of kind and it's a warm hug and all
these things. And what's interesting about it is it's also
a show that has so much wearing in it. It's

got so much darkness in it. It's got severe mental
health problems in it, Like it's there's actually for a
show that I think people watch with their families and
people talk about it like it's a family show, and
I think it is. But what's unusual about it is
that I say fuck every other word, and there's a
cunny lingers scene, and there's you.

Know, I think people get over that though, because of
because of the overall, because it feels it just feels

So you create this brilliant show Shrinking with Bill Lawrence
and Jason Siegel? How did it come about? How did that?
Obviously at this point, we know Bill loves your writing,
we know that he wants to work with Jason. How
did How did Shrinking get born?

Shrinking happened because Bill and I were talking a lot
and hanging out, and he said we should I'd like
to do something else with you. And he said have
you Is there anything you've been working on? And I
told him I had this treatment for a show that
was about a therapist, but it was about grief, but
(01:01:57):
it was a much darker version of what shrinking ends
up being. And then he said, that's interesting. I have
a similar thing, but it's a different tone, and his
thing was much lighter and the more we talked about
it was like, actually, if you put these two together,
the middle ground is shrinking, and that is actually the
best version of this show. And so that's sort of
(01:02:18):
what happened. And then we we wanted Jason always because
he was just because Jason Seagle is the perfect man
for it, because he is he has that thing where
you just love him, so he can be a bit
of a dick. You can write a character that makes
mistakes and does bad things, and you can push it
quite far because you're always going to love Jason Seagule,

I think. And we got on a zoom with Jason
and we pitched him the show. And I had a
Muppets poster his movie behind me because I genuinely.

to Harrison. And Bill's like, but I'm not. Harrison's in
London making Indiana Jans and he Bill says, well, Brett's
in London, he can meet Harrison. I get a missed
call on my phone. I still have the voicemail and

it's and the voicemail goes, Brad, it's Harrison Ford. I'm like,
what the fuck. And he goes give me a call,
and I'm like, fuck, and I'm thinking if I if
I wait five minutes, I'm going to freak myself out
and not. So I just immediately called him. Hi, Harison,
and I say, how's it going. He goes, yeah, I'm

at work and I say what are you working on?
He goes of Indiana Jones. I'm like, yeah, yeah, and
he says he says, He says, can you meet on
Saturday for dinner? And I had a gig on Saturday,
stand up gig booked and I said, I'm really sorry,

I can't. I have a gig, and he goes, oh,
and he seems quite shocked, and we sort of. He says, well,
let me go back to you, and he hangs up
with a cool Bill and I go, well, he wanted
to meet on Saturday, but I've got a gig and
Bill goes, you fucking idiot.

It's Harrison Ford. It's Harrison Ford. You have to cancel
the gig. I was like, but people have bought it,

he says, come to my house, come to my place

I've been downgraded to a short window, you know what

get a lift, and I get out to come. Really know,
it's like what the fuck? I don't know what to expect.
And I ring the doorbell and fucking you know, hand

and he looks amazing and he says hey, and he
shakes men and I go in and he sort of
walks up these stairs and I follow him up the stairs.
He hasn't really said anything yet. And then we walk
into his apartment and he goes best script I've ever read?

And I go what?
Speaker 4 (01:08:05):
And he goes best scripts I've ever read? And I
see on his table he's got loads of scripts. He's
obviously reading lots of things. So I'm like, oh, you poor,
I feel bad for it. I'm like, you've got the
wrong obviously means something else. And so I look at
the scripts and I see the shrinking script and I go,
I go shrinking and he goes, yeah, best dialog I've
ever read. And I went oh, and I said do
(01:08:30):
you want to do it then? And he went yeah,
and I went okay then and he said, is that
business done? And I said looks like it and he said,
let's eat and then and then we had the whole
the whole evening. It's just brilliant and he was so
wonderful and so like he really got it. And also,
(01:08:51):
you know what was like, I don't know I've ever
told this before. I hope he doesn't mind me saying
this because it's sort of heartbreaking and like so lovely
is he was dressed a certain way and he said,
how do you how do you see the character sort
of dressing? And I said, well, honestly, sort of like this,
like what you wear.
Speaker 2 (01:09:09):
And he went, yeah, that's why I dressed like this.
Speaker 4 (01:09:15):
It was really amazing.
Speaker 1 (01:09:17):
He was additioning for Yeah, he went on an outfit.

he really is.

You know, you've wrote with him. He is what he
says he is and what you read about, Like if
you read Mike Nichols's biography biography, which is amazing, when
he talks about working with Arison Ford, Harrison Ford is like,
I'm here to service the story. I am an actor
in this film. I'm not the star. I'm here to
tell him show me that, use me in the best
(01:09:51):
way to tell this story. And he is like that,
this is an ensemble show. And as incredible as he is,
and he's fucking incredible, he is part of the ensemble.
And yeah, and he you know, Zach, this is I
find it so like moving, like he loves it. And
I also go like I get why he wanted to
(01:10:12):
do it, because he's fucking funny and vulnerable. He gets
to do so much in this part that he hasn't
been able to show. I think, and I think, and
this it's really not me being like, oh, we write
such great science. What I mean is like, I think
it's an opportunity for him that he has really embraced
because he hasn't. He's wanted to do this, He's wanted
(01:10:33):
to show all these signs of himself that he gets
to show in this part. And I think people are
always like, God, he's so funny. He's so funny in it,
and he is so funny, but he's also so vulnerable
in it in a way that I don't think we've
ever seen before.

And he's just amazing, you know, Yeah, I agree with
He's been the tough guy in so many freaking projects
and he's you know, and to see him cry, and
to see him not only cry, but freaking uncontrollably cry, like,
I can't fucking hate this. It's really really as a
fan of his, as somebody who's watched him pretty much
(01:11:08):
since I was three years old, it really is refreshing.
I've seen every form, every form of him, and to
see him like this, I've never seen him like this,
and that's that's that's saying something because he's been in
everything and he's never been this.
Speaker 1 (01:11:22):
I think he really loves being funny. I see I
see that, I see on set that he I see
that he's loving making everyone laugh.
Speaker 2 (01:11:33):
Yeah, and uh.
Speaker 1 (01:11:34):
And he said to me that it's it's he loves
it's one of his favorite jobs. He just loves the
environment of the set.
Speaker 4 (01:11:43):
And he's he's always generous to the writers and he'll
always after receiving his shot, he'll come over and thank
the writers and like he's he's really good and he's
and he's also a generous actor like he because I
think he knows, he knows people are into that they're
working for. The people very excited to work with him.
There was a very nervous like fuck, I've got if

they've got just one scene with him, and he'll he'll
he'll do something to put them at ease, and he'll say,
like this is gonna be great.

It's just a little gesture to show to them, Yeah,
I'm here with you with doing this together.
Speaker 1 (01:12:16):
The biggest obstacle is for the other people, including herself,
to get over to get over it the fact that
you're sitting with Yeah, you have to sitting with it's
your own ship. Yeah, it's your own ship, because if
you bring that to the table, you're never going to
be able to be good. Whether you're an actor or
a writer or director, you have to sort of well,
(01:12:38):
I can only speak for myself, give yourself a little
pep talk, like get rid of all that bullshit. You know,
he's a regular, he's an actor, just like everyone else
is an actor.
Speaker 2 (01:12:47):
And and you know, I think I think they're there
to make you look good too.
Speaker 3 (01:12:51):
Elizabeth Banks said it also, you know, she You know
everybody when when you're working, everybody wants the scene to
be good. Everybody wants what you know, we all say
going to do something because we believed in it and
we want it to work, you know what I mean.
And there's no difference between him and anyone else in
that situation. He wants this to be just as good
(01:13:11):
as you want it to be. He wants you to
be as good as you want to be. And so
you know, yeah, it is a hard thing for you,
but it takes a really good actor one and master
of the craft to put you at ease and relax
you so that you can be what you can be
(01:13:31):
the best version of yourself in that scene.

I'd say, the first time I ever met him, he said,
what's going on? I think I've told this on the podcast,
but in case, I'll tell Brett. He said, let's go
on a ride in my golf cart. So I've been
with him for thirty seconds and he's taking me on
a Indiana Jones is driving me around the back lot
on his golf cart. And there's these little trams that

go by for the tours on Warner Brothers. It's not
as big as Universal, but they they have a lot
of these little tour buses that are constantly going around
and one is approaching us and I and I noticed
that he just so suddenly just looks away for his privacy.
And I say to him, do you ever turn and
wave to the tours?

And he goes, no, I look away.
Speaker 1 (01:14:19):
But I do feel bad about it.

You know how he would freaking they would jump off
the tour.

works on it doesn't have like the button the press

Also, if you work on the Warner Brothers a lot,
they go buy every ten seconds, So it wouldn't be
a very fun environment for him to be working.

of kept everything kind of contained. It's like, let's very
quietly try this thing and then we're going to quietly
be over here and between takes kept it all sort
of low key, and it was really great. And I
think Bill came to visit and you we'd done a

thing and he looked and he was like, okay, great.
And it was such a sort of relief because then
it was like, okay, we're fine. There was no sort
of panic of is this gonna? Is this right? Does
this feel right?

Was some of that pressure? I wonder just as an actor,
because you become, you know, in an un natural, unusual
way globally famous as this very specific character, were you
worried or concerned or anxious about like, hey, I also
want to show everyone I'm not just roy Ken and
this is my first big chance to do that. Was

It's sort of I mean, as in, you always want
to not be boxed in and be able to do
other things, but that is out of my That's the

All you can do is try and enjoy the making
