and boil boy that We've got a show for you today.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Lexi Brown.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
How you doing, girls, I'm good?
Speaker 2 (00:24):
How are you?
Speaker 3 (00:25):
I'm excellent.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Everyone's had a canon in the back. Oh he was
loud in the last episode. Everyone was talking about how
he was. He was God, he look at him.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
He was rustling wrestling back.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Y'all won't be able to see when this episode jobs
on the video jobs, she'll see him just nice and
demure today. Yeah for no.
Speaker 4 (00:53):
Okay, guys, So we have a lot to get into.
I know, you know, we just go get into it.
Kathy versus Fee player commissioner. Never in the history of
sports have I ever seen a player go at the
(01:17):
commissioner of their league the way the FISA Collier did
in her exit interview.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
And honestly shout.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
Out to Fee because for her to do that was
very brave of her one she didn't have to do that.
I feel like as far as what she said, I
support her in her experiences and what she has, you know,
felt towards the commissioner in the league since she's.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Been in the league.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
She was actually my rookie when I was in my
second season, so I wasn't a VET yet, but she
was a rookie. So I've seen Fee grow up, you know,
into this strong, powerful player, woman, mother, businesswoman.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Co founder. So it's been like really cool to see
Fee grow up.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
For me, I feel like everything that she said was valid,
and I think other players have chimed in said what
they need to say.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
I don't really have much to add.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
And for me, last time, I was very vocal about
my working conditions.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
I got traded. So I'm going to keep it cute.
I'm going to keep it cute on this front and
say that I support Fee and I want to do
everything in my.
Speaker 4 (02:40):
Power as part of the Players Association and being part
of the CBA committee to make sure that we get
a deal done that we all feel is beneficial to
the league and the players. Because at the end of
the day, Kathy works with the owners. Guys, Kathy does
not work for us. She works with the owners. So
for me, coming at the league and the owners sideways. Yeah,
(03:04):
that's going to light a fire under negotiations for sure.
But as someone that wants to work in league leadership
and ownership in front office, this is something that I
have to tread lightly with because those are the rooms
that I want to be in one day and continue
to help grow the league and give players and organizations
(03:25):
the resources and the knowledge that I feel is necessary
to continue to build the league up. So shout out
to fe though, Like when she came up with her notes,
I said, oh, oh this is getting this is getting
a little spicy. But from the outside looking in, Mariah, like,
how did you feel about her words and her delivery
(03:49):
and all the things that she was saying.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
I thought her accusations towards the commissioner were very damning,
and I was very interested to see what Kathy was
going to have to say in response. Look, the Visa
Collier is a very respectable player who isn't as Lexi
and I have both talked about throughout the season and
since we have been covering the w she is not
(04:12):
the person to just be like lashing out about anything.
So I feel like her speaking, especially in that manner
that was very specific, accusatory and I mean direct, Kathy.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
I'm speaking to you.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Was shocking.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
I think that was the biggest part to me, saying
I had this private conversation and these were the exact things.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
That were said. Were she had the red button for sure.
Speaker 1 (04:36):
I think probably sitting in that conversation allegedly hearing those
things that were said, specifically about the rookies that we
have been so supportive of of on this program, specifically
Caitlin Angel Paige, I'm sure when Fie was in that
conversation hearing those words, she was like, oh, this is
the red button for show, and if things that work
out in the CBA negotiations, trust I will be informing
(04:58):
the public.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
And that's exactly what she did. So I thought that
it was very enlightening.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
I was more shocked, less shocked about fees exit interview
and the way it was delivered and how honestly respectful
and eloquent I thought she was.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
More so, I was shocked by the commissioner's response.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
I saw a lot of WNBA players actually in the
comments of her response video where she was like, look,
I have a family too, which as two people who
have gotten tons of hate on the internet. I'm sure
that it has been really tough for her and her
family and everything they're experiencing.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
As the commissioner of a league.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
As long as I've been covering sports and been a
sports fan, I was not expecting that response. Look, the
commissioner is usually the principal of the school and not
necessarily the victim of these sort of things.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
Saying I'm so hurt and disheartened by this.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
Yeah, oh, yet not exactly denying it, just saying there's
a lot of misinformation out there, but not.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
Saying fees lying.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
I don't think that she was I don't think any
player would come out and be that specific about something
like that. Those things didn't happen, but I felt the
response to it was a little disheartening, at.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
Least for you guys.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
I didn't feel like it was necessarily taking responsibility for
Even though she doesn't work for the players, she does
have her responsibility to y'all and with growing the league,
like y'all.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Are was going to do that.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
The owners aren't going to do that, obviously, they have
a responsibility to help you guys do that.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
But without y'all, there is no league.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
There is no nothing so at the end of the day,
there number one like people that they're answering to should
be y'all. And in that response, I didn't feel like
it was that. I didn't feel like there was remorse,
and I was a little pissed about it. As a
fan for the players of the WNBA, I feel like
your own more respect than that, to be honest, and
I would rather just keep it a buck and say, look,
(06:44):
there were some things I regret, or look, we're moving
past that.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
I don't want to hear, but what about me? Because
David Stern would have been like, everybody's in trouble and.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
This this, this, this, this and that like.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
That would handle.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
So I didn't like that at all.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
I'm glad you.
Speaker 4 (07:02):
It's not glad you brought up David Stern because I'm
pretty sure he was the commissioner when my dad was
playing Yes, and my dad actually went through a lockout
in his career, and he and I have a lot
of conversations about CBA and negotiations because he was.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
A player during a lockout.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
He was a WNBA coach, she was a wnbagm Like,
he knows so much, so I've just been picking his brain.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
I always pick his brain.
Speaker 4 (07:32):
But I've been picking his brain as of late about
this CBA stuff because he actually went through a lockout
and he says that our lockout now is very, very
similar to theirs in nineteen ninety eight. I think, I
want to say, so, that's still pretty early for the NBA.
(07:53):
We're still very early in our you know, WNBA lifetime,
Like we're still like basically a little kid as far as.
Speaker 2 (08:02):
As you're approaching.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
I feel like your thirtieth birthday asah, and that time
is around the NBA's thirtieth birthday has a league, soit that.
Speaker 4 (08:10):
So he was like, there's a lot of similarities to
what you guys are asking for and what the league
is trying to give y'all, And.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
That's what a negotiation is.
Speaker 4 (08:21):
Both parties are not going to come to a conclusion
where everything that they want is gonna is gonna happen.
So obviously the revenue sharing is top priority. If people
by now do not understand what that means, then y'all
are just being dense for no reason. Because me and
(08:42):
Mariah have talked about it over and over all, the
players have talked about it. There's messaging out if you
guys really want to hear about CBA talk. We literally
have an interview with Terry who's in charge of the
players Association, that we did back in February, So there's
information out for everybody to really understand what we're asking
(09:03):
for and the comparisons to the NBA NFL, Like, yes,
as far as players associations, that make sense, but as
far as money revenue, expensive expenses, like we understand that
it's apples and oranges. We trust me us as players
understand that. So we're not going to beat a dead
(09:24):
horse here because I feel like we've talked about it
so much about what exactly we're asking for when it
comes to the salaries and the salary cap. What I've
been interested in is now with the finals happening and
this long season and the injuries, are fans finally like.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
Why don't any of the teams use their bench?
Speaker 4 (09:46):
Why are the why are the players so tired when
they have all these players on the bench, Like, I'm
glad that that's coming to the forefront. And also despite
everything that Fees said about her and Kathy's private conversation
and how Kathy is kind of out of touch with
the players, which I agree with a lot of her
(10:07):
points that she was making was about the officiating and
the integrity of the game and the product that's being
put out on the floor, and that point kind of
was missed completely by a lot of fans, obviously by
the media. The media didn't even talk about anything else
that he said in her exit interview because of the
(10:28):
interview was like four minutes.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
It was a few minutes.
Speaker 4 (10:32):
It was everyone just focus on the fifteen second clip
of her talking about our superstars and what Kathy said,
and I was.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Like, yes, that is an important.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
Part to highlight, but everything else she said was exactly correct.
Speaker 2 (10:49):
So I think we can use that to.
Speaker 4 (10:51):
Segue into the finals a little bit because we have
seen a very dramatic change in the officiating. I feel
like from the first half of playoffs and the regular
season to the finals right now, and for me, I
think Fee would have said I do believe, I truly
believe that she would have had the same sentiments whether
(11:13):
they advanced or didn't advance. And some people are not
sure if she would have, but I think that she
would have still said what she said regardless if they
advanced or not. But I do think that the officiating
tangent was definitely a jab at the Mercury, and we're
seeing it play out in real time because they are
(11:34):
not looking their best right now in Games one and two,
I don't think, because I think their physicality is being
used against them. Let's get into the finals a little bit. Yeah,
(11:55):
let's get into the finals a little bit. So what
you got for us, Maria as.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
The Mercury are a very physical team, as we saw
that kind of being the catalyst to fees entire speech that.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
She gave in her Agna interview.
Speaker 3 (12:11):
The Mercury are a very physical team.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
Lexie, I'm curious how you think specifically that obviously from
a defensive standpoint, but like how specifically, like why are
we seeing that play out so much now? And in
what ways are their games being like for people who
haven't really necessarily been watching the Mercury this season as much,
How specifically is this affecting what their bread and butter is.
Speaker 4 (12:34):
Y'all know that Alisa Thomas is the head of their
snake Phoenix. The way she plays basketball is very unconventional,
it's unorthodox, it's extremely physical. Becky Hammond literally said in
her media availability that she is the only player that's
transitioned from basketball to football, and that was a backhanded
(12:59):
cop But she's not wrong because if you guys have
watched Alyssa Thomas play, she does run people over like
that's her mo. She says really hard screens. I mean,
I got a lot of at stories in the bubble.
She concussed me with a screen in the back court,
(13:20):
so like I first, I have first hand experience of
what it's like to be laid out by Alyssa Thomas.
And there's a video on my Instagram. If y'all don't
believe me, I'm gonna actually put I'm going to repost
it this week and y'all can be like, oh, she
wasn't lying.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
No, she literally laid me out in the back court
in the bubble. I got a concussion.
Speaker 4 (13:39):
So the way she plays basketball is extremely physical. Kalia
Copper has been known to be a really aggressive defender.
Satu is also a player that plays really physical, uses
her body and her size extremely well, but sometimes can
be a little bit out of control.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
I feel like I think that with the.
Speaker 4 (13:59):
Extreme criticism of the refs of the last week and
a half two weeks, they had to have had their
little secret ref meeting or in their little ref group.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
Chat or whatever and be like, we need to we
need to clean this up.
Speaker 4 (14:14):
And I think that's why we're seeing Jackie go off,
Dana Evans go off, Jule Lloyd getting loose, because I
think everyone gets really caught up in the physicality of
post players.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
But that's not going to change. That's never going to change.
Speaker 4 (14:31):
That's always been how post players play basketball, and that's
why we're seeing less and less of them because the
girls are bigger and stronger, the men are bigger and stronger,
and no one wants to be laying up and banging
against another human being for to forty eight minutes. If
you guys don't understand the rules of.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
Defending.
Speaker 4 (14:55):
When you're in the post and your back is to
the basket, you have a complete different set of rules
than when you are faced up facing the basket. So
that's why you probably feel like post players are way, way,
way more physical than guards because they allow that, because
that's just the nature of that position is you need
(15:16):
to be a little bit more physical. You need to
be able to have your own space and be able
to make moves. But when you're a guard and faced
up like it's hands off, Like you cannot put your
hands on people. You cannot grab people, you can't wrap,
you can't do any of that.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
And I feel like the biggest issue this season.
Speaker 4 (15:33):
Was the freedom of movement at the guard position, and
people cannot freely cut, people cannot get open, people can't
come off of screens because the refs have been allowing
players to like have their hands on their.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
Waist, on their like everything.
Speaker 4 (15:50):
So I feel like even when you're looking at a
player like a Caitlin Clark, like a Sabrina, even Jule
this season with her, you know, up and down, it's
because those are players that rely heavily on having a
freedom of movement and they just simply weren't allowed to
have it this year. It's something that I struggled with
in my first year back after.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
I got sick.
Speaker 4 (16:10):
I was not strong enough to deal with that physicality
and it really affected my game.
Speaker 2 (16:15):
So I think that.
Speaker 4 (16:18):
These finals, they are like, y'all can't touch anybody, And
that is why we're seeing Chelsea, Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young,
Dana Evans.
Speaker 2 (16:28):
Get loose because they have freedom of movement.
Speaker 4 (16:32):
And I'm really happy to see that because that benefits guards.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
Throughout the league, especially.
Speaker 4 (16:38):
Ones that come off a lot of you know, downscreens
and you know, like to shoot outside shots and don't
necessarily like to be in the lane. Also, Jackie's a
very physical player as well, so if you're initiating the
contact as as an offensive player, like you have the
advantage when the refs are calling games the way that
they are. So I feel like Phoenix is going to
(17:02):
have to adjust, which is hard. Like we said last week,
it's very hard to like dial it down, like it's
really hard to turn it up as well. But they
now see how the refs are calling these games, and
they're going to have to adjust. But they're gonna get swept,
Like it's possible the way Vegas is playing right now,
(17:24):
Like they have to.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
They have to figure it out.
Speaker 1 (17:28):
Yeah, obviously the Aces are very much up right now.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
Game two.
Speaker 3 (17:33):
Speaking of Jackie Young, I want to talk.
Speaker 1 (17:35):
About her record breaking performance most points is most points
for an ACE player ACES player? Can I speak, guys,
most points for an ACES player with thirty.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
Two in a finals game, She's been the quiet spark
for them.
Speaker 1 (17:49):
After a little bit of trouble in game one, Becky
literally laughed and said, I could never be mad at
Jackie and now we see why, LEXI, can you speak
a little bit more to because everybody is so focused
on Asia Wilson obviously because she's their MVP, and she's
Asia Wilson doing incredible things on both sides twenty plus
point games.
Speaker 3 (18:09):
Then you got Chelsea Gray and her assist. We'll talk
about that in a minute. But Jackie Young, what specifically
about her?
Speaker 1 (18:16):
You mentioned her being a physical player, but like their
big quote big three, I guess we could call them,
why does this work?
Speaker 3 (18:23):
And what role does she play in that?
Speaker 2 (18:24):
Guys?
Speaker 4 (18:25):
Jackie Young was literally a number one pick. She was
a number one pick. She left college early to become
a number one pick. So I do agree when you
say she often gets overlooked because she plays next to
Asia Wilson and Chelsea Gray, and then she had Kelsey
(18:45):
Plumb de Erica like they guys like they were literally
the WNBA Avengers for a few years, and I think
because they were seeing so much success and that the
way that they were playing basketball was very transformative as
far as how we're playing now, I think that the
individuals kind of got lost in the sauce and at
(19:08):
the end of the day. You know, Asia was the
one that kind of rose to the top, which I
think is amazing. I think she has earned that. I
think she is the best player in the world.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
At the moment.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
Jackie is quiet. You know, everyone calls her the quiet Assassin.
She she but it's so funny that we say that
about her because she'd be yapping on the damn court,
like she'd be talking, like she'd be running her mouth.
Speaker 2 (19:33):
But she has the game to back end.
Speaker 4 (19:34):
You can't hear that, and it's so everything still it's
like very quiet still, Like it's so funny that we
all collectively as the league know her as being like
the quiet assassin, but we also collectively know that, you know,
when she gets going, like she'd be talking her shit.
So I think that's funny that that's the reputation that
she has for herself. I think these moments she lives for.
(19:55):
She's just so poised all the time. She really The
thing that impress has impressed me the most about Jackie
and her growth as a player is her three point shooting.
I remember when she first got into the league, she
like was not a very good three point shooter at all.
So I'm looking at her stats right now year one
(20:16):
thirty two percent, from three year two twenty three percent,
from three year three twenty five percent from three.
Speaker 2 (20:22):
Twenty twenty two. I don't know what she did in
the off season, but.
Speaker 4 (20:27):
Forty three percent, forty five percent the year after that,
and now she's kind of like found herself somewhere in
the middle. She's also taking more threes than she was before.
But when she added that three point shot to her game,
she became like very unstoppable and again just an unsung
(20:48):
hero of this ACES team and this Aces dynasty quote
unquote that you know they're building how many how many
championships did we say for them to be a dynasty,
they need four? As I said, Okay, so if they
won this one, they'll be at three. Well, they still
be a dynasty even though that they lost Deerica and
Kelsey would still be considered a dynasty because they still got.
Speaker 2 (21:11):
The core three.
Speaker 1 (21:12):
Yeah, because think about it, the Warriors are still considered
a dynasty with that they won without kd before and Africa.
You know what I'm saying, It's not really about as
as long as the core is there and the core there.
As I've called them the a apostrophe ce s.
Speaker 4 (21:28):
Becky into the into the core.
Speaker 2 (21:33):
So I would say, like the core group.
Speaker 4 (21:36):
Was plumb, Chelsea, Jackie Asia, the Erica, and now it's
Chelsea Asia, Jackie Becky.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
So I'm like, and there's something to be said about
a championship winning culture. We talked about this at the
beginning of the season with the Aces, but it kind
of being like they were the super team, They're gonna
win the championship. Buck I remember that era and then
then becoming kind of silly, not a bad way, but
(22:10):
they were kind of.
Speaker 2 (22:11):
Like the meme of you.
Speaker 1 (22:13):
They were constantly doing funny, silly stuff and everything was
like ha ha, we're joking around.
Speaker 2 (22:18):
And we're still really good.
Speaker 4 (22:19):
We're still gonna whoop your ass and laugh at you.
Speaker 1 (22:22):
Right then things kind of slowed down and to an
ACES sense, right like us calling them five being five
hundred a horrible season slowed down to an ACES sense,
and we went into this season. During training camp, remember,
everybody was like the vibe is so serious with them,
Like everything was very serious, and we said at the
(22:43):
beginning of the year, it's clearly because they're like hold on,
hold up, we got to get back to.
Speaker 2 (22:48):
This championship DNA.
Speaker 1 (22:50):
This isn't We're not just like a joke with an
MVP every year, like we are a championship winning organization,
and they're very much I mean as far as i'm
I can see, Like if we're we have to get
out the brooms, that's crazy. So it looks like we're
heading towards that again then winning a championship, which means
it's a culture they have going on, which is dynasty.
Speaker 3 (23:09):
That's dynasty language.
Speaker 4 (23:10):
Yeah, And when you have a culture, you're able to
pull yourself out of hard times and hard moments, which
is exactly what they did this year when everyone was
counting them out and questioning their personnel changes and their
acquisitions and they're coaching, they were questioning everything, and I
(23:31):
was like, I need everyone to calm down. Did I
expect them to win sixteen straight?
Speaker 2 (23:36):
No? Didn't. I don't think anybody did. But did I?
Speaker 4 (23:40):
I did expect them to finish in the top four
of the league. Absolutely? And how when Jackie starts playing
like this, when Asia and Chelsea Gray get their synergy going.
Speaker 2 (23:54):
They are such a hard team to beat.
Speaker 4 (23:59):
And then you have a coaching phenom legend and Becky
Hammond just staring at you, waiting for you to mess up,
waiting for her to draw Ato to get someone a
wide open, easy shot, Like they're just clicking on all cylinders.
And I can't say the same about Phoenix right now.
Speaker 2 (24:21):
And then I think that was.
Speaker 4 (24:23):
Super apparent when they had three over three minutes left
in the game and coach coach cleared his bench. I
never I never seen that before. I understand that he
was worried about injuries and fatigue, so like from that perspective,
I understood, but like, we're in the finals and there
(24:45):
was a moment in that span where he had his
bench and where if Westfeld hit a three.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
It was a single digit game.
Speaker 4 (24:52):
So for me, I was like, I understand it from
players safety, health and safety perspective, but like it's the finals,
Like you can't wave the white you can't wave the
more competitive nature, right, you can't wave the white flag
that early.
Speaker 1 (25:07):
I also wanted to kind of get your perspective on
the importance of coaching, because we talk a lot about
continuity and coaching and.
Speaker 3 (25:15):
Those at the top on the show, but Becky.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
Very much has been a part of this building dynasty
and growing dynasty. That the aces have going on and
things like that, like pulling out.
Speaker 2 (25:29):
Clearing your bitch with three.
Speaker 1 (25:30):
Minutes left in the finals game, would you.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
Still very much have a chance. That sends a message
of like.
Speaker 4 (25:36):
All right, we're going I don't like me either, and
that means that they are coming super correct for game three.
That's all I That's what I got from that is
you're throwing a towel like that. That means you are like,
we're getting our butts home and we're going to figure
out how to beat them in game three. I feel
(25:56):
like Sammy Whitcomb was it one hundred percent after her
scary injury in game one? Was it game one? I
feel like she she might've hurt herself. She wasn't herself.
Saw Tou had a rough night. I mean she had
twenty two to nine, but it wasn't like very satu
like at was in foul trouble. Ka has been playing
(26:20):
really well in this finals dB. You know, she had
her amazing moment in the Semis, but overall like she's
kind of has struggled throughout the playoffs, especially with her
outside shooting. I think Becky has just found a way
to incorporate her entire team and the way she needs them.
(26:40):
We said in the last series that Dana Evans and
Jewel Lloyd are like the key to the Aces winning games,
and Dana Evans Game one showed up and showed out.
So I want to give a shout out to Dana
Evans because last season for her in Chicago was was
rough and fans were me and it wasn't probably this
(27:03):
season that she was envisioning for herself.
Speaker 2 (27:05):
I would love people to now.
Speaker 4 (27:08):
Put some respect on these players' names. I say that
all the time on this show. Is a lot of
people who tune into the WNBA, who have tuned in
the last year or two are judging a lot of
these players in these what nine months that you guys
have seen them play basketball on their respective teams in
(27:28):
the w And.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
What Dana did in college at Louisville was amazing.
Speaker 4 (27:34):
Her body of work overseas is amazing. She won a
championship her rookie year after getting traded, Like Dana is
someone who has put the time and work in and
I'm really glad that she showed up the way she
has throughout this playoffs because I think a lot of
people were also questioning like why did they bring Dana
(27:55):
on this team? Why is she on the aces, Like
she's not a good fit.
Speaker 2 (27:59):
I think she's excellent fit.
Speaker 4 (28:01):
And in their press conference the other day, Becky even
gave her or two nights ago, whenever the game was
Becky even gave her a shout out for her shooting
drill scores, like when you think people aren't watching and
paying attention to what you're doing, and on off days
when you're doing your shooting, Like we have so much
technology now, guys, like if you're in the gym, it's gonna.
Speaker 2 (28:24):
Get checked, Like there's there's a.
Speaker 4 (28:27):
Camera somewhere counting all your shots. The Phoenix coach said
it about Sammy or the media members said about how
many shots Sammy gets up. Becky shouted out Dana for,
you know, her shooting drill scores and stuff like that.
So these players are working their asses off to be
ready for the moment, and I'm so happy for data,
(28:47):
like I like she was. We were teammates in Chicago,
and neither one of us really played that much, but
we were in the gym together a lot, and we were.
Speaker 2 (28:55):
On the bench together a lot.
Speaker 4 (28:57):
And even in the finals when we had a really
huge blowout game. We both got to play, we both
got to score in the finals. So for her to
now be in the finals being a key piece to
the Aces winning games, like it just makes me so
happy and like I love it for her because she
did have a rough year last year and she put
(29:18):
her head down, worked one overseas. Now she's here hooping
and she's going to play unrivaled. Like it's just gonna
go up, up up for her, and like that's what
it's all about at the end of the day, when
we talk about being ready for your moment, Like that's
that personified.
Speaker 2 (29:33):
Is Dana for real?
Speaker 1 (29:34):
Shout out Dana contributing to Championship Teams.
Speaker 2 (29:38):
You go, girl.
Speaker 3 (29:49):
I want to ask you a little bit of.
Speaker 2 (29:50):
A spicy question.
Speaker 1 (29:51):
So clearly At has been unhappy with the refang. You
have Sawtu foul trouble in game one and AT and
foul trouble in game two.
Speaker 3 (30:03):
Both have had the assignment of Angel Wilson.
Speaker 1 (30:07):
She was in voul trouble, had a quiet night compared
to her usual standards, finished with ten, five and six.
Speaker 3 (30:14):
So my question to you is watching the game.
Speaker 1 (30:17):
Right, is this more of a asil Wilson thing being
able to get her primary defender into foul trouble or
is this a skilled thing on Asia's part, or because
I know the fans are going to be wondering because
of all of the drama in the last series with
the links the refs obviously we talked about at the
(30:39):
top of the show kind of having their message in
their group chat. It seems like if they were officiating
the same way they did in the last series, would
things be different.
Speaker 2 (30:49):
I think it's a little bit of both.
Speaker 4 (30:51):
Like I said at the beginning of the show, at
does play basketball like football, and that's so like, that's
her style of play, like cool. She's been allowed to
play this way for many, many years. I think on
the flip side, she should not be the primary defender
of Asia Wilson. She should defend her at times, but
(31:13):
she should not be the primary defender for this exact reason.
Asia's skill set, her footwork in the mid post is
so elite, like she's gonna bait you into one or
two fouls just off the strength of her skill set alone,
like you could play the best defense in the world.
But because her release point is so high and her
footwork is so good, she gonna catch you slipping sometimes.
(31:37):
So I think that Asia has worked really hard on
her game to get it off the block and get
it to the midpost where she can face up like
I said earlier, and get the different defensive rules to
where you can't be as physical with her because she's
facing up. And I think that if the refs did
(31:57):
ref book by the book, like every don't touch anybody,
that at would fill out of every game. So I
don't like I see her frustration because she's like, y'all
been letting me play like this all season for years,
and now in the WNBA Finals, y'all want to start
getting tikki tak with me.
Speaker 2 (32:19):
Third place MVP voter, get her me like, y'all go
play in my face like that.
Speaker 4 (32:25):
So I understand her frustration, trust me, But also like,
this is Asia Wilson. We're talking about who actually did
win the MVP. So when it comes to who's going
to get the benefit of the doubt in Vegas, it's
gonna be Asia Wilson.
Speaker 2 (32:40):
Now, the tie could turn in Phoenix.
Speaker 4 (32:43):
Because we know the word of the year for these
referees has been inconsistency. So we're gonna see what happens
in Phoenix and if they if they keep it tight
like they've been keeping it, but who knows.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
And that's and that's the annoying part about the frustration
with the refs.
Speaker 4 (33:02):
It's like, you really don't know if you're going to
get the same type of foul calling game to game.
And I think that's why everyone is so irked and
frustrated because you don't really even know. And it's funny also,
it's funny like so when the refs, when you get
(33:22):
the refs, I don't even know if you know what
refs are coming until like the actual game time or
warm up time, but they put the ref's names in tape,
like in front of your benches, so you know the
ref's names. So even before the game starts, the tape
is there with their names.
Speaker 2 (33:37):
We're like, oh, we got.
Speaker 4 (33:39):
In today, we got hurt today, like so we got
to get mentally prepared.
Speaker 2 (33:45):
So who is refing our games?
Speaker 4 (33:48):
I personally, I do have a handful of refs that
I really like, but I also have a handful of
refs that I don't like as much. But as I
always say, foul call. My biggest issue is freedom of movement.
Speaker 2 (34:04):
That's it.
Speaker 4 (34:05):
And I'm stronger now, you know, it's not going to
be as much of a problem as it was last season.
But I remember coming back my first like few games
and I was like, yo, I can't even get open, I.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
Can't get the ball. I'm tired. Why am I.
Speaker 4 (34:22):
Getting thrown around like a rag doll right now? And
it was because they wasn't calling no freedom movement. But
I also was just a little, a little weakling. But
I think that Game three is a must win for Phoenix.
If they don't win Game three, I think I think
they could possibly get swept.
Speaker 2 (34:43):
And I don't I don't want that.
Speaker 4 (34:45):
This has been such a great playoffs and for it
to end in a four to zero of the first
seven series seven game series in WBA history, going to
four zero, I would hate that as a fan and
as everything, but I would hate that so much.
Speaker 1 (35:03):
I mean, before we send the people off into watching
this next game, I guess the next time the hoop
promotes we they'll have already watched it. But however, what
do you think that Phoenix needs to do to get
back in the series.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
Slash.
Speaker 1 (35:13):
Is it possible for Phoenix to get back into the series. Yeah,
like it is there a possibility or has they not?
Speaker 2 (35:23):
It's absolutely possible. I have their I have everybody's playoff
metrics here. You know me, I love I love numbers.
Speaker 4 (35:29):
So point blank Satu has to play better in at
has a stay out of foul trouble the end. Sammy
Wickcom has to make threes and they have three point
shooters on their bench, but they have just not been
playing a lot of minutes. So it's whether it is
coach going to trust his bench to come in and
maybe make something shake, give them a new look. I
(35:50):
don't know if he's going to do that in Game
three of the WNBA Finals, but he has he has
high quality shooters on his bench that are ready to go.
Speaker 2 (36:00):
I feel like, so it's.
Speaker 4 (36:01):
Gonna be interesting, especially if Sammy is not one hundred percent,
He's gonna have to lean on his shooters that he
has on the bench, and he has them, so I
think that's gonna have to happen. I think Vegas is
just gonna have to stay focused in locked in. I
think they're gonna have to keep riding this Jackie wave,
and I think Jewel and Dana have to just continue
(36:22):
to come in and contribute in whatever way that they can.
Vegas Is offensive rating right now is one oh nine,
and throughout the playoffs that would be first, and during
the season they were at one o six. They finished
the regular season at one o six offensive rating. Phoenix's
(36:44):
offensive rating right now is ninety eight point four and
during the season the regular season, they finished at one
oh four.
Speaker 2 (36:54):
So their offense is not Their offense.
Speaker 4 (36:59):
Is not where that during the regular season, and I
think it's fatigue. I think that it's they are settling
for a little bit more outside shots than they were
in the regular season, and I think that that is
an easy adjustment for them to make. Where they hang
their hat is their defense, and their defensive rating has
slid a little bit in the playoffs, and Vegas is
(37:23):
a brown the exact same as it was throughout the season.
We never looked at Vegas as a super defensive team.
That was Phoenix's bread and butter. So I think they
just need to lean back into that, which, like we said,
is gonna be hard because of their physicality and the
way that the games have been reffed.
Speaker 2 (37:38):
But they're just gonna have to figure it out.
Speaker 4 (37:40):
So finals figure it out, go back to what has
been helping y'all, which is y'all's defense. Vegas is averaging
eighties eight points per game. Phoenix is averaging eighty one
points per game. Vegas is shooting thirty eight percent from three,
shooting twenty and Phoenix is shooting thirty one percent shooting
twenty seven. So Phoenix is shooting more threes than Vegas
(38:03):
at a lower clip. Rebounding something that was very glaring
in the last game for both teams. Honestly, I think
they both can rebound a little bit better, but they're
both kind.
Speaker 2 (38:17):
Of like the same rebounding.
Speaker 4 (38:19):
Neither one of them or like killing anybody rebounding wise
about the regular season. So I think that defensively is
where Phoenix is going to get their energy. I think
that's where they've gotten their energy all season long. I
think At is going to have to stay in the game.
She can't get in foul trouble. The team looks so
(38:39):
different when she's not running the show and not saying
that mcannie can't handle it, but she's like she's like
point guard adjacent, like sh'll run an offense when she
absolutely has to.
Speaker 2 (38:53):
But at the end of the day, At is the
one running that team. So I think they're going to
be fine.
Speaker 4 (38:59):
I think they're going to get back home, get some rest.
And that crowd in Phoenix is crazy, so they're going
to feed off the energy of of the of the
X factor is that? Is that what they're called whatever?
I love playing in Phoenix. I think Phoenix is like
one of my favorite places to play.
Speaker 2 (39:19):
I'm a playing a lot that we're texting.
Speaker 1 (39:21):
I was like, I love it.
Speaker 4 (39:22):
I love I Honestly, I think I have more places
I love to play than like my least favorite places.
Speaker 2 (39:29):
Like I absolutely hate playing in Connecticut.
Speaker 4 (39:32):
Obviously everyone does, I think unless you went to Yukon.
Speaker 2 (39:38):
I also don't really like playing in.
Speaker 4 (39:43):
Hm hmm, else I really like to play. I don't
really like playing DC their gymas. It's just too little,
Like I just feel like they deserve better.
Speaker 2 (39:52):
We deserve better than playing in that little arena. Like
is it smaller than the Dream Arena? I think so.
Speaker 4 (40:00):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (40:01):
Wow?
Speaker 4 (40:01):
And if it's not smaller, like it's not smaller like
capacity wise, like the actual building is feels like.
Speaker 2 (40:10):
Way smaller than the dream where the Dream play. Yeah,
the Dream arena, yeah, the quarter Yeah, the Dream.
Speaker 4 (40:17):
Arena is nuts. I really enjoyed in there, and I
like that. I like the Dark Court too, which some
people hate it.
Speaker 2 (40:23):
But I love it.
Speaker 3 (40:24):
I love that.
Speaker 2 (40:25):
I love it.
Speaker 4 (40:27):
So I think this is going to come out before
Game three, actually the morning of.
Speaker 3 (40:33):
So they won't know either.
Speaker 4 (40:34):
Yeah, so I did read a few comments, like now, guys,
I'm going to the YouTube comments. Okay, I like to look.
Speaker 2 (40:41):
At them now.
Speaker 4 (40:42):
I'm also back on threads. Guys, I'm back on threads.
I'm trying to get our show a little bit more popping.
I had to check somebody yesterday. I've only been back
on threads for like four days, and I already had
to check somebody because they try to talk crazy about
my dad and my agent, and I was like, y'all
(41:03):
can talk crazy about me, but don't don't bring my
dad into this.
Speaker 2 (41:07):
So he didn't say anything like that. Sad.
Speaker 4 (41:11):
Yeah, he didn't say anything absurd, but like now I
have to not have to step in because now you're
talking about my father and my agent, Like I don't
played by my family, So keep it cute on threads.
Speaker 2 (41:24):
I think that.
Speaker 4 (41:27):
Next well, depending on how these next two games go,
I want us to do like a Q and a episode,
so probably not next episode, but the episode after. So
y'all tapping with us on Well, Maria, you're on.
