Games with Names is the production of iHeartRadio, February twentieth,
nineteen eighty nine, UIC Pavilion, Chicago, Illinois.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
It's Ricky Steamboat versus Rick Flair, Styles and profile, Livesy Ride,
Jeff Flying Kids, Steiner, I forgot having a hard time.
Whoa delegators down? This is wheeling and.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
Kneeling in the city.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
Who welcome to games with names? Today we're looking at
the Shytown rumble, Rick Flair versus Ricky Steamboat with the
(01:54):
legendary Rick Flair himself now Rick in one sentence, why
did you pick this match?
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Because I had the best chemistry with him of anybody
I've wrestled. I wrestled Dusty Moore, I wrestled Stinging a
Lot Luger, Harley Rays. But he and I just said
that chemistry. You know, I went over talked for the match.
He trusted me to just you know, talk our way
(02:23):
through it. So and uh to me, he's arguably the
greatest uh baby Face of all time. Shawn Michaels what
he wants to when he when when Seawan wants just
work babyface is great too, but Sean can go both ways.
Ricky nothing bad about Ricky Steamboat. Just the nicest guy
(02:47):
in the world. He looks like it for sixty five
bench for sixty five, yeah him, he said he I
think he's six foot tall.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Six that's still a lot for sixty five. Is this
the greatest match of all time is this?
Speaker 2 (03:04):
I think we set the bar pretty high in this match. Well,
he had three. It was the best one in the
our draw and then Nashville afterwards. But this what makes
us different, you know what I mean? My wrist hoole, right, gravel,
hold on the guy and just holding down. We never
(03:25):
stopped for thirty minutes.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
It's technically insane.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
And he let me. He let me smack the ship
out of him.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
You guys were definitely yeah doing whack it. Yeah, he
let me smack this ship a couple of times. You
guys were getting up in the neck area. Yeah, I
mean it was crazy. What so this is your greatest
match of all time in my opinion?
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Yeah? Well, he and I had many more. I had
some really great ones with Bury Windom too, But I
think I think we set we set the bar pretty
high with this.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
At that time, it was constant and we'll get into
it more or but we want to see what you're
up to. What are you up to these days?
Speaker 2 (04:04):
I'm selling cannabis, which I smoked way too much of
last night, and I've got an energy drink and I've
I've dropped the line of liquor what's.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
The energy drinking a wool energy woo energy. Yeah, it's
mushroom fused, mushroom infused. What kind of mushrooms?
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Functional? Mushrooms? Nothing to make your paring right or anything,
but yeah, if you drink one in the morning, lit'tle
justus crucial.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
To It's great for brain functionality. Yeah, it's like crazy
studies into all the mushrooms right now, especially for all
the athletes that use their heads.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Uh, you know, I've done some of that stuff, and
I feel like it makes me cognitively like dialed. Yeah,
sometimes I don't. I can't compute my thoughts. Yeah, sometimes
I feel like when I take some of these mushroom supplements,
I can compute my thoughts.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
Yeah, the truth, there's some truth. They're expensive, but the
good ones keep you going all day long. You know
what it costs money to live long? Yeah, it costs
money to live long. Let's talk about some of your
sports fandom. Who are you fan of sports? NFL? Basketball, Baseball?
(05:17):
Are you watching sports these days? Oh?
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Every day I live on sports. Of course I love Lebron.
I know Michael, but I still think Lebron's better. Just Lebron,
just a different kind of cat man six eight two
sixty or so sixty nine Michael is sixty six two fifteen.
(05:40):
You know, I just think I don't know what record
Lebron has to break, yeah to say he's the man.
But I love Lebron. I like Tom a lot. I
think Tom will be here Thursday.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
Yeah, he's in La.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Is he calling the game?
Speaker 1 (05:58):
No, he's calling He's called on Sunday's match. What's the
America's fucks game of the Week. I want to say
it's Bucks. No, it's not the Bucks. He's not He's
not doing Thursday Thursday's Football Prime.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Yeah, that's at the Al Michael and Kirk.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Yeah, Now are you big Tampa Bay Buccaneers?
Speaker 2 (06:19):
San? I am kind of they they screwed me around
a little bit and uh that they called me and
said will you fly to Detroit for the Detroit Draft?
And then I got my and want me to bring
my daughter. So we got all something going and they
called me at the last minute. Instead they we elected
(06:43):
to go with someone else to choose the pick. So
that kind of turned me off. And then the guys
that do game game Day right wanted me to do
something with the Bucks for Monday night football. So went
and did it. And the guy that runs the game
day with the Kirk and old guys, Yeah, say you
(07:05):
do this. I promise I'll have you on game day.
I never heard from again. The same old story, same
old story. Yeah, well, we got to get you over
to Patriots Nation.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Make you a love that. We'll get you to ring
what is it? We can ring the bell now the lighthouse.
You gotta get Rick Flair to the lighthouse.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
I love that. I love Boston.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
Boston.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Do you all got it? Do?
Speaker 1 (07:29):
How come?
Speaker 2 (07:30):
It's just a nice city. It's fun.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
One bar after another.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
One bar after another, A bunch of fun bars, that's
for sure. How was it performing there when you were rested?
Speaker 2 (07:42):
The best Boston fans are great. Yeah, God, yeah, Boston
fans are really That's one of our better markets. In
the big buildings, I'm so glad that Big dig is over.
My God, that exhausted me. I'd put my jeeps on
my car and when I go around the block five
(08:03):
times in the same place.
Speaker 1 (08:05):
The Big Dig, I mean, they spent so much time
and money on that thing, and the traffic is still rocious.
Speaker 4 (08:11):
But you know what, though, like downtown Boston with the Greenway,
It's so much nicer than what it was. Remember ninety
three used to go through downtown and it was a mess.
Speaker 2 (08:20):
It's I was just sitting that damn tunnel for an hour.
Speaker 3 (08:22):
Oh my god, you still do, Yeah, you still do.
Speaker 1 (08:25):
What are some other cool sports towns that were fun
to wrestling?
Speaker 2 (08:30):
Chicago is great, Chicago, New York is fun. This is
a fund down in wrestling too, La La and Atlanta's fun.
Atlanta's got issues now for a lot of different reasons. Yeah,
in the South, Greensboro, I mean, Charlotte, the South eat
(08:52):
it up. Yeah, for the Big Way, that's route. I
spent forty two years in Charlotte, So but I'd have
to say that. Yeah, Chicago, Boston obviously the Garden, but
the Garden is the New York just so tough to navigate,
My god. Yeah, it overseas. Tokyo's phenomenal, Sydney, Australia, Auckland,
(09:14):
New Zealand. I mean, I've I've been a Tokyo's have
you been to.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
I've never been to Tokyo.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
You gotta go.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
My dad went in the eighties Yea with a rock band,
and he always raved about it.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
Oh, it's phenomenal, he said.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
The food's great, it's clean, the people are awesome.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
That they are these karaoke bars that are open all.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
Night, all night long.
Speaker 1 (09:37):
What's your karaoke song? The wonder the Wonderer. I'm a
type of guy that'll never said. Seems to be the story,
same story. Hey, baby, as long as we wander, sometimes
you just need the wander, that's right. So, speaking of Charlotte,
(09:58):
we had actually on a few months ago. Yeah, how
cool is that to have your daughter.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
Right now? It's unreal? Yeah, and she's the best best, Yeah,
she's unreal. Do you know five eleven and buck fifty
five corkscrew moonstall level nine gymnast. She could have gone
to do she could have gone to any school in
the country if she would have agreed to play a
little barrel. But she wanted to be an outside hit
(10:27):
or yeah, and uh at five eleven, that's that's not
what it's about right now. So but she ran a
five thirteen mile when she's in the ninth grade. Wow. Yeah,
and on one week's practice because the diver Province High
School got hurt. She won the state championship and diving. Yeah,
(10:51):
she's a full on athlete.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
She was so cool. Do you do you see any
of you in the ring when you're watching her?
Speaker 2 (10:59):
No, she's someone better than I was. She yes, yeah,
in the ring. Absolutely, she's just that. At Corksrew won
solid at five eleven, at above grifty five.
Speaker 1 (11:10):
You've seen it, right, you know, as I have a
little girl, and it's to see them progress something they're
working hard. One, I mean, it's the ultimately, it's like
what I felt when I was at the high of
my high.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
Yeah. How old is your daughter?
Speaker 1 (11:27):
She's only eight? Yeah, she's eight. Get her personal trainer,
So we got one. That's that's what I got fresh
she was, she.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
Was about five. She hated it. Dad, I'm not going
to go work out for two hours every day as
you are.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
Look at her now, she's the cham Yeah. No, that's
because that's awesome. I love that. Uh. She was so
cool and she was so personable and her story and
the match we went over was just amazing.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Which match was it?
Speaker 1 (11:57):
We went over the one with Becky Becky Lynch, Yeah,
the WrestleMania Yeah, when they were the headliners of WrestleMania.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (12:06):
Or the three Way yeah, three way match? Yeah, the
first time any woman or any women headline headlined WrestleMania,
which is huge.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Yeah, you know what the funny thing is? They went
in a ring at twelve thirty at night. Jeez, it's
a long day, boy down.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
When you were getting did you have any late matches?
Was the latest you would get in?
Speaker 2 (12:32):
Oh? My god? And otto one night they argued all
night long. I was wrestling Rick Martel and they the
NWA rules were either I wrestle an hour or I
go over right, and so it wasn't Martel. It was
a promotion. They didn't want me to beat Rick, so
(12:54):
we went in a ring at twelve o'clock and wrestled
for an hour.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
Geez, twelve o'clock.
Speaker 5 (12:58):
Now.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
I used to hate night games because you anticipate the
whole time. All day you're running through your How was
especially you guys probably ripping it too before? Were you
ripping before or ripping after?
Speaker 5 (13:12):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (13:12):
I mean drinking?
Speaker 6 (13:13):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (13:14):
I never drank for hours, never, No, but afterwards a lot. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
Dial Maybe I.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
Was up at eight to him free squats and then
bed at six to get up for an eight o'clock flights.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
And you do that for a long time.
Speaker 2 (13:32):
My whole life. I'm still doing that.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
Let's go, And they had to call me five times
away we have to come to day, Kayleie was a
text me ten times, let's go, Rick, you're late, the
cars coming, Let's go. Hey, Rick Flair could be late. No,
he's Rick Flair. Now are any current wrestlers you watch
(13:55):
right now that you wish you could have had a
match with. I wish I could have wrestled Roman. Yeah,
like really like Roman a lot. You know he was
captain in Georgia Tech. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
Yeah, and the Tech is playing great now.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
I mean this nil makes anyone great?
Speaker 2 (14:10):
Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
It's college Football's I don't understand it yet.
Speaker 7 (14:14):
Do I.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
It's basically, get to pay a quarterback, a eighteen year
old kid twelve million dollars like the kid at Michigan
the quarterback. I know.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
It's it's I'm happy that the guys are getting paid
because I mean I was, I played college and it
was it was a struggle. But it's just you got
to see what the social study is going to be
for the next eight years to determine.
Speaker 2 (14:43):
Well, just I always worry about the parents just saying
take the money because they're supporting their family, you know,
and then pretty soon the money's gone.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
That's if they can just stay mentally tough and realize
that if they worry about out their real second contract
in the National Football League. Yeah, every single one of
those guys could be a half billionaire.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
Yep, exactly.
Speaker 1 (15:07):
They're going after the little nut. Yeah, you know what
I mean, They're going after the little nut. Yeah, if
they could just have the discipline, which is very hard,
as Rick said, because you got fucking parents now thinking
their agents, you got selling the kids off.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
Yeah, you got to keep the main thing, the main thing.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
Yeah, it drove me crazy. Lamara Jackson, Jackson's mother is
his agents. It worked out for him, It worked out
for him, but it's still was just like tough. They
don't know what they're doing, how to negotiate like that.
They don't just wake up and become an agent. But
as long as he's happy. But why they're struggling now,
John and Jim are really good friends of mine.
Speaker 1 (15:45):
Yeah, and he was at this match, Jim Harbaugh was
in the front row.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
Yeah, that's for a first time I met him. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (15:52):
Yeah, so you're close with them, real close to Jim. Yeah,
how'd that happen. Well, when Jim was a Michigan he
invited me. They had a deal with the year that
they were uh what's the kids named Rashawn Gary the
defensive uh tackle for the Packers for Shaun Gary Sean Garry.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
Yeah, so he was like the heaviest recruited guy in
the country, and uh, Jim had me come up there.
They had a deal with It was me and uh
Tom Thomas there, Derry Jeter, just a bunch of high
profile off I don't know I figured it into it,
but and they knew that I didn't like Ohio State,
(16:36):
Sorry k Lee. So I went up there and talked
and it was it was fabulous. And then that's that's
literally the first time I met Tom, and I never knew.
I didn't want to walk up to him and go hey,
I don't know. He actually came over to me and said,
I'm because it's from California, right. I didn't know if
he even saw me wrestle the guys right there. Yeah,
(17:00):
that's the first time I met him.
Speaker 1 (17:01):
You don't think he ever saw you wrestle?
Speaker 2 (17:03):
Well, I didn't know. I'm not gonna walk My wife
was going goes, I don't do that. You don't walk
up to people and go way ah, you know, probably
not the smartest thing sometimes, but I just don't.
Speaker 1 (17:19):
I get it.
Speaker 3 (17:20):
I get it.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
But you know he came up to you.
Speaker 2 (17:23):
Yeah, and that I said, I'm I'm a big fan.
Tom Brady went, thank you. Of course, my wife is going,
we're just hell, we're just no work. He's only it
was great and you were great on it, Toude. The roast,
the road. The roast was phenomenal. That was the greatest
(17:46):
thing I've ever seen.
Speaker 3 (17:48):
That was you know what that was.
Speaker 1 (17:49):
That was a fun fun you were right, you were Oh,
you were all over it. It was It was a
little nerve racking because the climbing of comedy. Yeah, I
felt like that roast kind of brought comedy back. Not
necessarily that one, but it was the first time you
heard a gay joe while a black guy joke in
a while.
Speaker 3 (18:09):
You know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
And it all started with Kevin Hart, who's kicked it off.
But he threw out Brazilian jiu jitsu instructor right away.
So I was sitting there like, oh, thank god, that
was a good teammate.
Speaker 5 (18:19):
Yea.
Speaker 1 (18:19):
He took the heat off everyone else with the girl
that Nikki Glazer.
Speaker 2 (18:27):
Was unbelievable. She said he used to have eight rings
or something like that, but.
Speaker 3 (18:35):
Gave way one or something like.
Speaker 1 (18:39):
It was a fun nson. She's awesome. Yeah, she's been
on the show.
Speaker 2 (18:44):
She's she is.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
She's a big Chiefs fan too. Oh yeah, she loves
the Chiefs. I think she just loves Taylor Swift. That
loves the Chiefs. But can you imagine a wrestling roast?
Speaker 2 (18:56):
Oh got it? No, I wouldn't want to be any
other Who would be a good roaster and our business
a guy named Jim Cornett, remember him? He'd be tremendous.
Speaker 1 (19:10):
I mean, you guys would all be great. It's like
the promo videos.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
All the guys are, all the guys are going. I mean,
you know we lost Hogan, right, Yeah, well I do. Yeah,
I know.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
Jerry a lawler. Remember Jerry. I don't remember Jerry, Jerry
the King Lawler.
Speaker 2 (19:25):
Jerry.
Speaker 1 (19:25):
Oh yeah, it was announcer with Jim Ross. Yes, yes,
he just had a second stroke. He's in a wheelchair,
yeah right around, can't move anything.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
Literally. Sometimes at night I think to myself, God, how
am I still here? Right? But all these guys are
dropping like flies. Man.
Speaker 3 (19:42):
Yeah, it's it's tough.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
Yeah, it's tough because we all grew up everyone, all
of all of them, in our in our lives. Now,
who's this uh? Vern vern Ganya gan tough as hell?
Tough is talk about the training because I remember you.
I saw something in where he made you guys do
this training and you said it was the hardest training ever.
Speaker 2 (20:03):
Oh my god. Well, first of all, Ken Pattero is
what I knew Verne, right, But Ken Paterra was training
for the seventy two Olympics, and Ken and I lived together.
And when Ganya said to me, I knew his son
real well, and said, do you want to come to
(20:24):
the training camp too? And I said yeah, but I
was three hundred pounds, I could total sixteen forty and
the power Lives I was just training with can I
just got, you know, bigging it. So I'm thinking, yeah,
I'm thinking of Dick the Bruiser and the Crusher. The
first day out there, we trained at his farm out
(20:45):
whise that two mile run, two mile run in a cornfield, right,
five hundred free squads, two hundred and fifty push ups,
two hundred and fifty hunches. How long do you think
it took me?
Speaker 1 (21:03):
Twelve hours?
Speaker 2 (21:04):
Huh?
Speaker 1 (21:04):
Twelve hours? Seven seven? Yeah, I mean that three Wait.
I hadn't run a mile and I was a fresh
friend in college. Seven hours I quit? When did it
become easy? Did it ever become easy? You keep on
doing it?
Speaker 2 (21:21):
It took me three months. I quit twice, but vern
came over and got me. Literally, I says thirty for thirty.
He literally slapped me across the face to throw me
out in the front yard. That you've quit everything, you've
overdone in the livery and quitting me.
Speaker 3 (21:37):
Okay, it was brutal low now now was that?
Speaker 1 (21:42):
I mean that was probably you think about that.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
You know how your wheelbarrow? Right?
Speaker 1 (21:46):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (21:47):
Up?
Speaker 1 (21:47):
Twenty two flights of stairs? Are you kidding to hold
the guy's legs and you've got to crawl like this
shoulders then you carry him down? Oh my god, that's
like some Navy seal ship.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
Yeah, you would not imagine. Remember Brian Oldfield, the shot putter.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
Yeah, it's a little before. I wasn't the shot putting guy.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
But but you know the day right, Yeah, he lasted
one hour he walked the screw this, No, you know
so many pro football players have tried to come in
in the old days. Yeah, Otis says, struck for the
guy from the Raiders. Yeah, he lasted an hour. Who
(22:27):
was the guy in the Steelers that was shooting the gun?
Played with me and Joe Green in.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
That shooting the gun on the Steelers. I can't remember.
Anyway he came, he lasted the day. So and where
was it at at his farm?
Speaker 3 (22:44):
And where farming?
Speaker 2 (22:44):
Wise? Out of Minnesota?
Speaker 1 (22:46):
Minnesota? Yeah, so what time of year is this?
Speaker 2 (22:51):
It was, well, the Olympics were over in September when
he trained October, November, December that I had my first match,
uh in January seventy three, and nobody told us what
to do.
Speaker 1 (23:06):
No one told you what.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
I said, what do we do? We just go out
there to do what I taught you. I said, what
was that being so?
Speaker 3 (23:15):
You were in had a good shape?
Speaker 1 (23:16):
Though you were in shape.
Speaker 2 (23:18):
Yeah, that's ever been an issue for me. It's just
toning it down. I never knew when to go go
to beddy.
Speaker 3 (23:28):
Yeah, I get it. You played football at Minnesota for
a minute, right, I.
Speaker 2 (23:34):
Would Freshmen weren't eligible, but I played, Yeah, yeah I was.
I would have I would have started my sophomore year,
but I they put me in summer school and I
lasted two days and got in my car. There was
no cell phones or anything, and back then drove to
Chicago to see my friend at the works family that
owned the black Hawks and the Bulls and all that,
(23:54):
and they did it on the Bulls and it before
they sold Majery Ryansorp. But my parents thought I was
in school. They had no idea where it was. So
I kind of like went into my own life when
they when they put the mem in boarding school. Yeah,
fifteen you just street smart hitchhike to Miami three times.
(24:19):
That was exciting fifteen years old hitchiking.
Speaker 1 (24:22):
Er. Now, what do you say to someone when you're
hitch hiking? Like, how do you wave them down? Give
me the pitch if I'm driving down the car?
Speaker 3 (24:29):
Fifteen old? But you have to remember, now this is
in the sixties, regardless.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
You got to I've never even heard of this like.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
This, And so they stop and there figure out yeah
that's Cristy. Yeah. Four girls from Michigan State picked me
up and I went all into Miami with them.
Speaker 3 (24:48):
Wow, that's like the movie Dumb Dumber. Yeah, it comes
by Hawaiian Tropics girls.
Speaker 1 (24:54):
Oh my god, Yeah, ron Rice, ron Me and Ronnie.
I've had fun with him. Now, who are some of
your wrestling heroes? When you meet Verne you start training.
Who are some of the guys you idolize that you
wanted to form your style off.
Speaker 2 (25:10):
Of idol Dusty Roads?
Speaker 3 (25:12):
Dusty Road?
Speaker 2 (25:13):
Yeah? Yeah, Verne said to me, why do you like him?
He can't work? I said, I said, I just I
think he's the greatest. You know, he was so christmatic. God,
look you dream was one of one of one kind.
Hard times. You put me through hard times.
Speaker 3 (25:31):
Rick Claire put me through hard times.
Speaker 2 (25:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (25:35):
Who's the Who is the best wrestler to go out with?
Speaker 7 (25:38):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (25:39):
Party with?
Speaker 1 (25:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (25:40):
Which decade?
Speaker 1 (25:44):
Start? Eighties?
Speaker 2 (25:45):
The eighties? Arn Anderson. I had a ball and then
I've had so much fun with the Undertaker. I lost
two old lex watching with the Undertaker.
Speaker 1 (25:58):
I love the Undertaker the best he can Drake Jack
Daniels Man, Jesus, does Paul Bear go out too?
Speaker 7 (26:06):
No?
Speaker 2 (26:06):
Paul Beart was real calm, but take her and I
would tear your apart. My god. We used to go
into European tours where they let us stay overnight in
each town before that was rough. What was the best
town in Europe? I have to say the towns in
Germany were the best. Germany, Yeah, England was good, to Manchester, London,
(26:32):
I wasn't too crazy about Italy. Spain was okay, but
then but the best trip is uh So, Vince calls
me and says that you and Taker are gonna go
wrestle in Japan and then from there you go to
to London right for subbate and then to take her
(26:55):
and I take off and go to Japan. He wrestles
her angle. I wrestled, I can't remember. I wrestled. Then
we fly to London right, and then we flew home
and we got so screwed up, so we apparently landed
in Chicago right and he put bars. The clean up
(27:22):
crew woke me up, mister Flaire have to get off
the plane and I said, wait where are we? And
he he left me with my hands over.
Speaker 1 (27:31):
Like like Undertaker put you in the casket. Yeah, he
puts you in the casket.
Speaker 2 (27:37):
Yeah, uh yeah, he have had some good times Undertaker.
Speaker 1 (27:43):
Now you were the driver for Andre the Giant.
Speaker 2 (27:45):
Yeah, I drove on for a year when he was
Jean Frere. Yeah, yeah, Now I took him to Chicago
and all that he was. I'd take him to see
all the bar it was. It was tremendous.
Speaker 1 (27:59):
Now, what would you I have him in?
Speaker 2 (28:01):
He sat in the backseat in my car, big guy.
Oh say, well, he wasn't as heavy than when he
first started. He was like when I first met him,
he was like four probably four twenty four thirty. But
then you know he eventually got to five to sixty Jesus, yeah,
we could drake boy. Yeah, so you've never seen anybody
like that in your life.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
I've heard a hundred. I've heard one.
Speaker 2 (28:24):
Hundred and six bears. I saw him do it?
Speaker 1 (28:26):
Is he the best drinker of all time?
Speaker 2 (28:28):
Unbelievable. He drank a goddamn seven forty seven out of
every bottle of vodka on the plane. I mean other
people are getting served too, but boss, more vodka.
Speaker 1 (28:43):
You don't have any more?
Speaker 3 (28:45):
He caught it.
Speaker 2 (28:48):
Bring me something else.
Speaker 3 (28:50):
Was he even getting drunk or was it just no?
Speaker 2 (28:54):
Are you kidding me? You talk about a guy that
had no privacy in life. Yeah, you can say about
Michael Jordan, or mom and Ali or Tiger, but Andre
just you couldn't miss him walking into the airport. And boy,
if he saw you walk into the airport, he boss
even before match, you take come drink for one hour
(29:18):
before the plane leaves, Like, I don't want to realize
drink you just agree? Yeah you sure did.
Speaker 1 (29:27):
Now what are you guys talking about in the car?
Speaker 2 (29:31):
Girls? Nothing changed and nothing changed. Not always our favorite subject.
Or we were knocking our opponents airbat.
Speaker 3 (29:44):
The opponents gotta get him down.
Speaker 2 (29:49):
Gosh, you would have loved him.
Speaker 1 (29:53):
I could only imagine, because he's like a big old lineman.
Speaker 2 (29:57):
Yeah, the redskin has made him a deal. I don't
know what what fell through with that.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
But what kind of deal is this? They were going
to We wanted to play de tackle? Yeah wow, how
do you think Andrew the Giant would have been as
a d tackle.
Speaker 2 (30:11):
At four twenty five? Horror fying at five six so
he could hardly move his back was so bad. Yeah,
but that was later in life. But at four twenty five, Jesus,
the guy could drop kick and everything.
Speaker 1 (30:26):
So he was pretty athletic, too, very athletic if a
soccer player. Yeah, head to toe take us through a
Rick Flair outfit back in the day, head to toe.
And I know you don't wear you you never wore
the same outfit twice.
Speaker 2 (30:40):
Never.
Speaker 1 (30:41):
I saw that in all of your.
Speaker 2 (30:43):
Three hundred pairs of Alligator's shoes from Bruce Friedman. You've
ever heard Friedman?
Speaker 6 (30:48):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (30:48):
Yeah? Yeah? Expensive? Yeah, expensive, three hundred pair.
Speaker 1 (30:53):
Why why the alligator?
Speaker 2 (30:55):
I don't know. I just I just liked the jewelry
and clothing I met Bruce, and I still buy it.
I just bought some stuff from Bruce. They have to
be multimillionaires. Have ever seen in their store? No, it's
just three stories on Mitchell Street in Atlanta of shoes. Yeah,
and because of all the athletes were chopped there right, Yeah,
(31:17):
the oversized stuff and all that.
Speaker 1 (31:20):
So you have just thousands. Yeah, what's the most lavish
purchase you ever made? Most lab of clothing, of anything?
Probably the most. I bought an AMG S sixty three
where they only made one hundred and sixty of them.
Then I paid two hundred grand for that. But it'll
(31:42):
it'll go. It's because a thousand horse power, it'll it'll run. Jesus.
Speaker 2 (31:47):
I'd drive it an alligator alley two hundred miles an hour. Yeah,
there's no cops number. It's not even a chance to
get and go out there, and portions will pull up
with me and all of it. It's kind of like
it's not like it's pretty termed, but you know you're
gonna run into a car it wants to run.
Speaker 1 (32:05):
Are you car?
Speaker 2 (32:05):
Gay? I love cars, but I don't know a queer
form like I used to be.
Speaker 1 (32:10):
Yeah, well are you what was your Are you like
the international cars where the old school most like the
Mercedes Mercedes? Yeah, high luxury baby, and I had a
bunch of Corvettes when I was younger, but nothing like
that car I have now.
Speaker 2 (32:25):
It's four wheel drive, thousand horse power.
Speaker 1 (32:28):
Those things move new technologies insane.
Speaker 2 (32:30):
Yeah, yeah, I put I put a chip on it.
It'll it'll go.
Speaker 1 (32:35):
Rick Flair's putting chips on the car. Yeah, make you
go a little, get a little extra horses at Yeah,
you gotta get you gotta get mixed.
Speaker 2 (32:41):
One more chip to go twenty eight grand, but it'll
be twelve hundred horsepower.
Speaker 1 (32:46):
Jesus, we'll be right back after this quick break. You're
seventy four years old. You're ripping around two and almost
seventy six. Yeah, and he's still ripping two hundred. Yeah,
I about my four minute plank yesterday. Let's go, do
you do a four minute plank? Four minute planks are tough.
Speaker 2 (33:03):
You didn't see it. Huh. You didn't see my plank yesterday.
Speaker 1 (33:06):
Look I didn't see it.
Speaker 3 (33:07):
Let me see it.
Speaker 1 (33:09):
I want to watch all four minutes of it.
Speaker 3 (33:12):
How long do you think you could do a plank
right now?
Speaker 1 (33:13):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (33:14):
You just had surgery, To be fair.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
I just had my You hurt your back right in
the plane crash.
Speaker 2 (33:20):
Well, I brought my back in through places.
Speaker 1 (33:22):
I had my disc replaced with this new technology. I
was always going to talk to you about that off camera.
It's insane.
Speaker 2 (33:29):
Show them out.
Speaker 3 (33:30):
Let me see this four minute plank.
Speaker 2 (33:38):
Look at it. Let's go.
Speaker 1 (33:42):
That's insane. Yeah, that's four minute plank. Where do you
start feeling the most? What injury comes up that you
think of?
Speaker 2 (33:50):
I don't you know? It's funny? Is here I am,
with all all those years of taking all those bombs. Yeah,
I don't hurt anywhere. You know, I'm not this this
arm because I've torn them over twice here once here,
this arm is fine, but this one I can't bend
it back. But it doesn't hurt. It's the key. No pain,
(34:11):
no knees, no hips, nothing miracle.
Speaker 1 (34:14):
So I retired four years ago and I was feeling
crazy pain in my shoulder for like the last five years. Yeah,
And all of a sudden, I go to see a specialist.
I'm like, is this because I have my shoulder redone?
They're like, nah, this isn't your shoulder. At your neck,
I had a freaking herniated disc from a long and
my joint space in my C seven six was collapsed
(34:36):
and my left arm turned off. Wow, because it was
sitting on the nerve. So they go in and they
replaced my disc and they gave me a half inch
yeah back because of the disk space. And I'm like,
pain free, it's insane, Like I'm six weeks out right now.
Speaker 2 (34:54):
Oh that's great. Well I had see you five and
six and my neck my neck, but there was no
surgery for it back then. But do you talk about painful? God? Wow,
neck pain is horrible.
Speaker 1 (35:07):
Anything to do with the spine is the worst. Yeah,
because it's it's related to everything. Yeah, your hamstrings, your
freaking your whole posterior chain. Yeah, it's and I watch
you guys it's so crazy, the pounding you guys put
in and and just to hear that, how you guys
went so hard after the matches, Like how did your
(35:27):
body's like withstand that? It's crazy?
Speaker 2 (35:31):
You know. I tell biobles all the time. They don't
realize it because they talk about that one year of
eighty three, But from eighty three, a four and eighty five,
I had seventeen days off in three years, jeezy in
an hour every night, an hour, not fifteen minutes dicking around.
Speaker 1 (35:53):
Yeah, like no, no, it's it's crazy. It's impressive.
Speaker 2 (35:57):
Eleven thousand a mile a week one time, Sydney to Auckland,
Auckland to Saint Louis, Saint Louis to Atlanta, Atlanta back
in Tokyo all one week.
Speaker 1 (36:10):
Jesus Christ. But you know what, you're the reason you
and your comrades that you guys were doing. The other
reason why that fucking w w E is what it
is today.
Speaker 2 (36:20):
Yeah, they don't, they don't see it like that.
Speaker 4 (36:23):
I know.
Speaker 1 (36:24):
How do we not have a union, Yeah, that's that's crazy.
A multime billion dollar company, right, yeah, no union, Well
it would take the wrestlers. You have to unify. Yeah,
it's hard.
Speaker 2 (36:38):
Because nobody wants to do it because they just move
on without you. They wanted me and Hogan to do it.
Then he'll called me and I said, I said, I'm
not jumping out there because they'll just replace me.
Speaker 1 (36:51):
And that's and that's why our union as the NFL
is so weak. We have a weak union because just
like your highest paid stars aren't going to say, hey,
they replace me, they're not going to fight for the
guys that are scratched not scratching at the bottom, which
is very similar to like when you're talking about policy
(37:13):
with guys in the NFL locker you got you know,
ten percent of the locker rooms making crazy money, fifteen percent,
Then you got a middle class, and then you got
guys that are not going to make the team. And
there's a lot of those guys, but they're all voting.
So it's tough to get alliance with our union. And
it probably sounds very similar to why you guys don't
(37:34):
even have a union.
Speaker 4 (37:34):
Yeah, well, do you think it's tough because you can
write someone out, so someone like puts their neck out
too far, they can write out whul Covid from the
stories where it's like you could never write out Tom
Brady from being in the NFL because he's just so good.
Speaker 3 (37:48):
Do you think that component maybe plays into why it's
so hard to unionize?
Speaker 2 (37:54):
No union? I don't know. I just didn't want to
be Jesseph Vento drove me crazy. Come on, come on,
I go, Jesse. You know, so I give up the
NBA World Championship walk out through. They just put the
belt on DBS or back to Harley or somebody, you know,
So who knows. I don't know. It just wasn't something
(38:17):
I wanted to explore, but I certainly was asked to
do it a lot.
Speaker 1 (38:22):
You hope that they figure things out because I mean,
it is such a big business.
Speaker 2 (38:27):
They well they first of all, they WW takes care
of anything if it happens in the business. But if
you get hurt on the outside, that's your well co
recor or something. They're very sensitive to taking care of people.
They won't do that nice. And somebody gave me an
(38:48):
explanation of why, but I can't remember what it was.
Speaker 4 (38:51):
We're also starting to see the wrestling superstars get more
access to their personas to like outside of the ring,
Like with social media, it feels like like when your
daughter came, she was actually she wasn't Charlotte, And having
that like differentiation seems like it's pretty new that the
wrestling's exploring.
Speaker 2 (39:07):
Yeah, but actually here's there's only two people that own
their intellectual property in the history of WW. Me and
the Rock. Hogan owned his, but you know now he's
a terrible mess with his family fighting over his money.
Speaker 3 (39:25):
So how did you get ownership of your persona.
Speaker 2 (39:28):
Because I sued him. Yeah, well, because when I was dying.
When I was dying, I was on life support for
fourteen days, everybody cashed in. My agent stole one hundred
and fifty grand because if I'm dead, they didn't goes
to court, right or whatever my will was at the time.
(39:51):
A state planning is very important, by the way, But
everybody was cashed in because I thought I was going
to die. And then when I lived, you know, then
I find out what's going on. Read the letters. WW
was writing me letters. I wanted me to sign it
when I was, you know, signing my intellectual property back
(40:12):
to him. So I didn't assume. I just said I'll
go public with this, give me my ship back. But
like undertakers, that was Mark Calloways six feet under. You
can't even get his They pissed him off with Steve.
That's why Steve Austin so mad. They will never give
up Stone.
Speaker 1 (40:31):
Cold Austin three sixteen shirts man.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
Yeah, even still now, it's still so.
Speaker 3 (40:38):
Yeah, still so and for more than what they were
back when he was wrestling too.
Speaker 2 (40:41):
Yeah. Do you know Steve had to quit when he
was thirty nine years old when he broke his neck. Wow? Yeah,
you imagine he'd been able to wrestle he was fifty
or something like that.
Speaker 1 (40:50):
I love Stone Cold. That was like, that was the generation.
That's how when I was a kid with Stone Cold,
I used to we used to have your uh wrestling
pill you and Hulk Holkster because I have a brother
that's seven years older than me. Yeah, and that was
you guys were his generation. And I grew up in
like the punk stage because I was like, that was
my age and it's yeah, it's freaking the rocket.
Speaker 2 (41:13):
I mean, all Steve wants to do is hunt, hunt,
and fish. Yeah. He just builds a ranch about forty
miles out of Towel. Yeah, he moved out of LA
I think he kept his place here, but I think
he moved he moved there full time. Yeah, but he
he won't have anything to do with it. He basically
(41:36):
Steve basically is the one that took him public, you
know what I mean. And I mean he made a
lot of money, but not nearly enough, and then it
was not giving him his trademark. So it's who knows. Yeah,
the business is really really hard to get your individual property.
Speaker 1 (41:53):
Yeah, it's well, you know, in the NFL, we don't.
We don't own any of ours really, you own your
your name, but like anything associated with the league, yeah,
you know, they get they get they get the money
and we get a piece of it. Yeah, Which that's
the that's the good thing about having a union because
you do get something of it, and you are making
(42:14):
your name because of the platform of it. So I
understand both sides.
Speaker 2 (42:19):
But yeah, but I mean I was telling her yesterday
talking about you and you know any other wide receiver.
It takes huge to me. Tell me what it feels
like to run across the middle of not knowing what
it's like.
Speaker 1 (42:34):
You know, it's it's who is the hardest. Cam Chancellor
knocked he hit me pretty hard. Brian Dawkins knocked me
out pretty I saw a floater he was, but he
was with Denver at that time. Yeah, well Ed Reed
lit me up one time. Ray Lewis knocked me out
of a game once he hit me so hard in
my butt once he likened me to the ground that
(42:56):
I had my ass. I had a hematoma internal bleeding
in my butt and my ass got like I had
j lo ass. Yeah, like to two weeks.
Speaker 2 (43:06):
It was bad.
Speaker 1 (43:07):
But you know what, going across the middle, it's changed.
In the middle of my career. It used to be
a lot harder because they could hit you a lot harder. Yeah,
you know, like probably the last six years of my career,
guys weren't going for the big hit as much. They
were going for the interception because that's how they get paid.
They don't get paid by big hits. They get paid
(43:29):
by numbers of getting intercepted.
Speaker 2 (43:30):
Yeah, but one big hit and change the guys.
Speaker 1 (43:33):
But they're also getting penalties and they're getting fined for
it now. So it changed. Early in my career, it
was it was you know, it was a no fly zone.
And the one thing that I always would say is
that you have a quarterback clock in your head or
like at least I did. Like, if you're going in
a certain part of the field with a certain coverage,
(43:58):
you can have an idea there's gonna be a guy
hitting you, so you can kind of brace for it.
I mean, you can't control it, but you can embrace
your body for it. Which that's a lot of the
times I would do. Now, if you're if you fuck
up and you run a man type route in zone
where a guy is waiting for you, and you continue
(44:18):
on the run and you get blown up, that's your fault. Yeah,
because that's my fault because I should have because of
that zone, I should have stopped. There's like so many
little intricacies, so you can avoid getting blown up to
the best of your ability. But it is football. There's
gonna be something that happen.
Speaker 2 (44:37):
Oh yeah, I can't imagine what it was like getting
it by Jack Tatum.
Speaker 1 (44:41):
Tatum, I mean ray Lewis was. He was a monster
out there. He was scary because he was bigger, faster,
stronger than everyone and he also knew the playbook. Yeah,
the guys that were in tuned with conceptually with the
offense use Yeah, well they need They got the D
lineman that spanged up which is the nose tackles. I mean,
(45:03):
they're getting ran through that now because of it, which
is so weird because I remember vividly when we play
against the Baltimore Ravens. We'd have a great run attack
going into the game and we would throw it all
out and say, we have to pass to beat this team. Yeah,
because you can't run the ball against them. Yeah, And
you know, I think they'll get back to It's the
(45:24):
first quarter of the season. It's early, and they're well
coached team. They'll get guys back's a great Yeah, John,
They're a tough team. It's just with these Ravens. You
got you want to see him play better at football
and like the high pressured situation.
Speaker 2 (45:40):
Lamar's out for three weeks.
Speaker 1 (45:41):
I know the hammi. Yeah, you don't like seeing a
hammy on a fast guy because those things nag.
Speaker 2 (45:47):
He's an incredible athlete.
Speaker 1 (45:49):
Yes, who's some of your favorite football players to watch
these days?
Speaker 5 (45:53):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (45:53):
My favorite huge Aaron Rodgers fans. And he's playing pretty good.
He's playing real good. Yeah, he's still got an arm.
Nobody gets it. He's got a cannon for an arm.
He does even at his size, he can throw the
ball a mile. He's he's honestly sneaky big yeah. If
you if you see Aaron Rodgers in person, yeah, I know,
(46:16):
like he's got if you shake his hands, he got
big ass hands. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (46:21):
And he's got long arms, and he's like very leverage
strong and he uses his body super I mean, he's
one of the greatest throwers of all time.
Speaker 2 (46:27):
Oh, I think so too.
Speaker 1 (46:29):
And Dan Marino, Dan, you know Dan, Yeah, but I
think Dan Marino's in that same category. Those guys just
arm wise, they could put the ball anywhere they want.
Speaker 3 (46:39):
Yeah, what's it like hanging out with Dan Marino?
Speaker 2 (46:43):
Actually just a regular guy always. I've done some golf
tournaments with them that drink. He likes to drink and
who doesn't, right, The guys that are fun to hang
out with it, they're tougher in hell with the hockey players,
Oh my god. And they can drink, oh god, pints
of beer. I used to be best friend with Bob Probert.
Speaker 3 (47:03):
Oh hell yeah. Yeah, of course you.
Speaker 2 (47:05):
Talk about a bad ass brother, Bob. Bob is he
was psychle man. He he'd walk into a bar man
and he I mean he had hands like cement blocks. Brother,
he was as tough in the street as he wasn't
on the ice, and he was a killer on the
ice ever watching documentary. Yeah, tough guy. Yeah, isn't that phenomenal?
Speaker 1 (47:29):
Those guys, those guys are different breeds the hockey guys. Yeah,
because I used to hang out with a lot.
Speaker 3 (47:35):
Of the Bruins.
Speaker 1 (47:36):
Yeah, when they were winning their sharp and chips in
the thirteen and stuff with Tuca and Sagan and looch.
Those guys are fucking crazy, they are. They'll drink three
pints of beer and be on the ice at fucking
eleven o'clock the next day and like nothing happened.
Speaker 2 (47:53):
Yeah, And I know Bob Probert, I mean, Bob is
like we did this. We brought him on wrestling one time.
And remember a guy named Tank Abbott. Tank Abbot, yeah,
the UFC guy. Yeah, so we were just the deal
was with there's Bobby right there. You're talking about a
tough some bitch man. He whipped anybody's ass.
Speaker 1 (48:18):
And they're not scared of getting their ass beat and.
Speaker 2 (48:20):
Ship, you know what I mean. He was tougher in
the streets than and what. So Tank he goes, he said,
what do you what?
Speaker 5 (48:27):
What? Uh?
Speaker 2 (48:28):
What? What?
Speaker 3 (48:29):
What?
Speaker 2 (48:29):
Should I do? I said, just walk over and ask
Tank what he wants to do. So he goes over
and Tank said, uh, I'll get back to you. And
turn around and Bob by the shoulder and said, I
asked you a question, and and uh, Tank, Abbit said him,
(48:50):
I told you, I'll get back to you. He said,
there's no getting back to What are we going to do?
Fat boy? He said to him, he said, don't destress
with me right now. I'll beat the fuck out of
you right here, and you don't fucking dressing room. We
won't even do it out there by the whole dresser
room like this, like right, thank But was scared to
(49:12):
death of them. Wow, Bob had those eyes. Man, when
when he has one of those eyes lit up and
he's a tall guy, yeah, six' four two point, thirty that's.
Speaker 1 (49:21):
Aura. Yeah when you got a, tall like crazy looking. Dude,
yeah and he's not like but he's he looks like
he could.
Speaker 2 (49:30):
Do he just sort of three grams of cocaine and
drink Twenty. Jackson he's still. Standing took, it took fourteen.
Cops he was bodyguard at the end of his, career
right twenty five, thousand dollars a day and he was
in A Miami guard bodyguard at somebody in the club

Match.
Speaker 4 (01:02:19):
Okay so we Got Ricky steamboat also known as The
dragon build out Of honolulu and Sometimes. Charlotte he's A
Wwe hall Of famer and AN Nwa world heavyweight, champion
trained under the tutelage of Verne. Gane he was, athletic
he was a high, flyer but also technically. Sound he
submitted himself as a great wrestler during an eight year
run in The Mid atlantic, region and he was thirty
(01:02:40):
six at the time of this. Fight what made him
so good as a, Wrestler he just had the. Gift
it was a, good, real good amateur, Wrestler state champion In.
Florida he just was smooth on That and you wouldn't
believe the FIGHT i used to have to have because
nobody wanted nobody. Wanted none of the, old older guys
(01:03:00):
wanted the young guys to make. It that's been kind
of the way it's. BEEN i guess probably a lot of.
Sports nobody wants to give up their. Spot, Yeah SO
i Talked George, scott the, booker and they're doing a
deal with me and him and the rest is. History
but he just a tremendous. Athlete you know what we
(01:03:21):
are doing moon salts and shit like that back. Then
but he certainly could have done. It, yeah he's that
good an.
Speaker 2 (01:03:26):
Athlete, Yeah AND i told you four sixty five pound
BENCH i mean phenomenal.
Speaker 1 (01:03:32):
Physique can you feel a guy that's strong in the
weight room when you guys are doing your moves or
is it? Are sometimes it's just easier to do the
move with a guy that's. Elitely So i'll tell you
the guy you can really feel with His.
Speaker 2 (01:03:44):
Brock. Yeah, well When brock grabs a whole, year you know.
THAT i used to go Easy.
Speaker 3 (01:03:50):
Berotter is there any of? That sometimes With?
Speaker 2 (01:03:55):
Brock there Was i'm fifty six years, OLDER i, Mean
wreussell Brock, lesser good. Lord so what happened Was steve.
Quit SO i got THE tv And vince, said where's your?
GEAR i said my? GEAR i, SAID i THOUGHT i
was co owner of the. Company he said you. Were
now you're Wrestling AND i said? Who he Said. BROCK
(01:04:16):
i said Rock. Lesser he, said get your ship and
never come AT tv without it. Again AND i went
from being a commissioner or WHEREVER i was to Wrestling.
Speaker 1 (01:04:30):
Brock that's a tough. Day but he's a bad apple.
Man oh, yeah holy. SHIP i played With Steve. Neil
yeah you Know Steve. Neil, Yeah southern cal He, Bakersfield. Bakerfield,
yeah he didn't play any, yeah, yeah he Beat brock
lessner The World. Champions, yeah he was our. Guard he
(01:04:53):
beat him in uh Uh Amateurs. Amateurs, yeah well he
was older THAN i, think but they they they wrestled
In World champions and AND i Think Steve steve beat.
Him that was just like Claimed stave and c double. As,
yeah maybe he only won N. A at one, point
WHO i Watched Kurt angle take Down brock three. Times,
(01:05:13):
yeah nobody was as tough As. Angle oh, god, damn
what an.
Speaker 2 (01:05:19):
Athlete but you know he was an undersized heavyweight in
college two. Thirty it's all they. Waited but the wrestling
guys Like Sylvester trek and at, mean but so all the,
guys you know that that ship goes that we're always
once in a, while the guys want to play. Around
so brockhead his gear on. It kurt was barefoot and
(01:05:42):
he goes to The angle that you could never take me.
Down so of course he got the rings were. Loaded
the old companies they're, watching But kurt duggled on three
times in a.
Speaker 5 (01:05:52):
Row, Wow.
Speaker 2 (01:05:53):
Kurt kurt was like a cat.
Speaker 1 (01:05:55):
MAN i, mean he was so, quick, quick, Strong, yeah
you know how to use his.
Speaker 4 (01:06:00):
Weight so we Got Rick, flair also known as The
Nature BOY wu build out Of, Charlotte North, carolina twenty
times twenty one time world, champion UH Wwe hall Of
fame Double Inductdee, double one of the greatest to ever do.
Speaker 3 (01:06:14):
It known for the iconic four leg.
Speaker 2 (01:06:16):
Lock which never Beat anyboddy. WRESTLING i have one ship
with that damn. Hold everybody could reverse.
Speaker 3 (01:06:29):
IT i saw.
Speaker 1 (01:06:31):
It you got, reversed and that's what you got pinned
this in This. Yeah, now there is one move that
during this. Match take us through this, match what you
remember of this, Match but there is one That there's
one move the top.
Speaker 2 (01:06:44):
Together.
Speaker 1 (01:06:45):
YEAH i think that was the one where you he
threw you into the and you did like a crazy
athletic fucking.
Speaker 2 (01:06:52):
On top of him over the, Top yeah. Together.
Speaker 1 (01:06:54):
Yeah now did you choreograph that or is that just
that just?
Speaker 3 (01:06:57):
CAME i called.
Speaker 2 (01:06:58):
Everything we never talked about, anything because for, ME i
had to hear the. Crowd you know the problem with
that now is they rehearse everything so intensely that if
you walk out the door and the crowd isn't liking
what that makes, Sense you never know what to hear
the crowd and the guys don't have the, experience you,
(01:07:19):
know to change it on.
Speaker 1 (01:07:21):
Fly so it's kind of like how offenses called plays. Sometimes,
yeah you know there's there's a Scripted first fifteen and
we weren't a Scripted first fifteen. Team we would have
like five plays that we knew we would, call like
the first, drive and then we would have counters to
how the defense was playing, us and we would log
that data and then we would call the game off of.
Speaker 2 (01:07:43):
That.
Speaker 1 (01:07:43):
Yeah so like we're reading the, defense you were reading
the fucking. Crowd, yeah and you weren't just going by.
Speaker 2 (01:07:49):
Script. YEAH i like.
Speaker 3 (01:07:50):
That who are some of the better like improvisational wrestlers
that you wrestled with over your?
Speaker 1 (01:07:55):
Career Harley Ray's Harley. Ray i'll tell you Great Harley race.
Story So harley is a wrestling you know his L,
yeah he really tough, guy, Right.
Speaker 2 (01:08:11):
So he's we're In greensboro and when he's Wrestling andre
in a singles, match and he had to Know. Harley So,
harley all of a sudden he Stands andre, up straight
up and down vertical. SUBLI i, Mean i'm watching us
going ship right, boom and then he gets Up andre
(01:08:32):
and he Slams, ANDRE i mean literally Picks hi, up
not Like holgan slam. IT i mean he lifted him
up and slammed him, right and so he would let
you would have Loved Holy. Race he'd been great in
THE nfl locker. Room he comes back and he's. SPOKEN
(01:08:52):
i go over to him and he, goes did you
Ask andre.
Speaker 1 (01:08:58):
If you could do? That ask him WHAT i? Said
soup lex slam kick out on? Two why WOULD i ask?
HIM i told, Him, Oh, God, hardy would you know
(01:09:22):
he's in a car record AND.
Speaker 2 (01:09:26):
I killed the first. Wife he's nineteen years.
Speaker 1 (01:09:29):
Old and to save his, arm they put a metal
plate in his left arm right from here to hear
this thick and all the way from here to the
table to take the.
Speaker 2 (01:09:41):
Arm so you know When hardy, goes nobody's looking for
the left. HANDED i have seen him destroy.
Speaker 1 (01:09:48):
People because of the. Rode, yeah, yeah like the elbow and,
Yeah gronk used to wear the elbow. Pad remember you
Know gronk wears that big as. Thing yeah that was
because he broke his, arm but then it became like a.
Speaker 2 (01:10:03):
Weapon. Yeah, no he had so every bar we go,
TO i, mean He, harley he was he just wanted
everybody to know his world's. Happening so we go into a,
bar like When Billy bobs and Fort. WORTH i, said
LET'S i get some. Drinks he, Said i'm going to play.
POOL i, Said god damn, It, harley DON'T i know
what you're gonna. Do he goes over to the pool.
(01:10:26):
Table there's ten people, playing, right takes a, queue chalks it,
up and knocks all the quarters off the fucking, tables
like eight, quarters and, GOES i got the winner. Problem
one time he did the WHOLE smu football. Team we
(01:10:49):
had to fight away out the.
Speaker 3 (01:10:50):
Door that's the cancel of the.
Speaker 1 (01:10:55):
Season that's like the eighties.
Speaker 3 (01:10:57):
Movies, bro this is like eighties.
Speaker 1 (01:10:59):
Movies you got, fun just rocked.
Speaker 2 (01:11:00):
Up you know?
Speaker 1 (01:11:02):
What you know what he?
Speaker 2 (01:11:02):
Did when when When holgan those guys came TO uh
To Kansas. City i'm wrestling there at The Memorial auditorium
and they came to The Civic. Center hardy, goes hold
this show, Down, Rickie i'll be, back and he pulls
his that millimeter, out puts it in the back of his.
Head he, Drives he goes over and he walked. In
(01:11:26):
the kick kicked open the. Door hogan was in the.
Bathroom he put the gun In ogan's face and, said
what are you doing in my? Town hogan, Said vince,
SAID i. DIDN'T i mean hardly with a Different.
Speaker 1 (01:11:44):
Wow he's like a real. Badass, oh real bad. As
if you Got hardly his, name you gotta be, yeah you, know,
hey he he couldn't when he left left high school at.
TWELVE i mean left school at.
Speaker 2 (01:11:58):
Twelve talk about street. Smarts, yeah you're talking About i'm
seeing poll literally in a. Fight i've seeing pole guy's
hair out of the head like.
Speaker 1 (01:12:08):
Patches who's the best ship talker in the ring than.
Speaker 2 (01:12:14):
It would be? Me and, uh who's a really good ship? Talker?
WELL i Thought dusty Olds at the best interview of
all time a couple of. Us But dusty was always
a good. Guy it's hard For dusty to be a bad.
Guy he just couldn't. Help but like, him you, know
and he was a creative. Genius now he's your. Inspiration
(01:12:34):
but you were kind of like almost a. Heel, yeah
your whole. Career, now how does?
Speaker 1 (01:12:39):
That how does that?
Speaker 2 (01:12:40):
Work i'm a terrible. BAYFACE i was so. Limited, YEAH
i just like being a. Heel i'm better much better
being a heel in a? Bayface how did you get this?
PERSONA i still don't understand it because you got like doctor.
PARENTS i don't know boarding, SCHOOL i know around rich.
Kids but, yeah right, place right, time and a lot
(01:13:05):
of hard. Work almost understand me that when people and
they contemplate, That i'll tell him that And i'll think about.
It seventeen days off in three, Years, yeah we're and
wrestling an hour every, night eleven thousand mile a.
Speaker 1 (01:13:19):
Week that's a. Lot, yeah it's a lot of. Drinking
so what about this match is something that you remember the?
Most one of the one of the. Moves it was
fucking twenty six minutes, long, right twenty three minutes, long
and it felt like you guys were working the whole.
Speaker 2 (01:13:35):
Time, yeah was there was no, downtime no rest. Time,
yeah that's a difference now grabbing a. Hold i've worked
with guys who want, to you, know grab a hole
and hold you. Down that that was never my. Style so,
YEAH i think it was a statement to our. Condition
he was really well conditioned, Too AND i always prided
(01:13:57):
myself on being able to, be you, know in your
wrestling hour every. Day you, know it's the funniest. Thing
well used to drive doctors crazy in my resting. Heart
it was like thirty. Eight, yeah so WHEN i was,
sick they put a paste. BAKER i, mean not BECAUSE
i needed, it but because there's something wrong with. Them
(01:14:18):
but every DAY i got, UP i did five hundred free,
squads and THEN i wrestle an hour at. NIGHT i,
mean you know you're going to get a lot of.
Exercise but back THEN i could eat ANYTHING i wanted to.
EAT i, mean but then as you get, older metabolism.
CHANGES i just ease off the, pasta WHICH i still.
(01:14:39):
Loved eat spaghetti all day. Long who.
Speaker 4 (01:14:42):
Can't so this match is widely regarded as one of
the most technically sound matches in wrestling. History it's a
lot of, cells a lot of, hits the athleticism full on.
Display it started off early with a lot of hard
chops chops, everywhere and then the pacing really picks, up
and pretty much from that moment just kind of ramps.
Up is There speci a big moment during this match
where you felt, Like, okay now we're really in, It
(01:15:04):
like now we're like cooking Our how does?
Speaker 5 (01:15:05):
That?
Speaker 2 (01:15:06):
Yeah you know what's funny because it was on a
pay per. View we had, to you, know stay with
the time where we. Could we could have done it
for an, hour which he AND. I he AND i
have done a ninety minute matchow that's a lot of.
Times but we never sat in a hole. Either he's
just fabulous AND i still talk To ricky a. Lot
he's had some health, issues you, know has a, lot
(01:15:30):
so many people. Have but he And Shawn michaels are
the two best workers of all.
Speaker 1 (01:15:36):
Time him And Shawn. Michaels, Yeah now what does that?
Mean best workers of all? Time like the best, performers best.
Performers he's the, best good guy And sean's the best
overall because you can Do sean will be a prick.
Speaker 2 (01:15:50):
Too he's a good heel and he's a but he's
a great. Bayface it's being able to sell and convince
people that that you're, hurt you know WHAT i, mean
where they really started to feel for, you which is
really hard to do now because it's it's so well
known that it's. Choreographed you, know people don't realize that
(01:16:10):
just because it's, choreographed it's still. People we got another
guy with a broken neck now who broke his neck
BECAUSE i Think Kevin owens has Done, JESUS i mean the,
guys and then people will call it. Fake it's. Fake.
Guys getting the ring will show you how fake it.
Speaker 1 (01:16:28):
Is shit hurts and it's a lot of wear and.
Speaker 4 (01:16:30):
Tear so some of the big moments of this of
this match as a big steamboat clothes line into a
flying chop and then right into a flying tackle that
takes out the ref.
Speaker 3 (01:16:39):
Too and then you both Traded, yeah you both traded.
Pins and then the second ref comes out of.
Speaker 1 (01:16:44):
Nowhere, nowhere bald bald guy comes out.
Speaker 3 (01:16:48):
There so how does that get like pitched to, you, like,
oh we're going to take out the, ref and then
like how does that come?
Speaker 2 (01:16:53):
About that was my. FINISH i gave it to.
Speaker 3 (01:16:55):
Him you gave it to.
Speaker 2 (01:16:56):
Him. Yeah you. Know the thing about it is you
look back on some of them stakes Of madia, career
like when When sting beat me In baltimore for the.
TITLE i should have just submitted in the, scorpion but
back then nobody wanted to.
Speaker 1 (01:17:13):
SUBMIT i, mean just we're losing was one, thing but
to submit in a, hole you, know but it would
have made it better for, him and it wouldn't have
affected my career at all with.
Speaker 2 (01:17:26):
Him he was just so. GOOD i was so happy for.
Him he would if he had a really tough ex
wife that was. Insane now you can quote. Me she
she hates, me AND i GET i don't get along
on her because she wanted to Be Miss elizabeth and
(01:17:47):
you know WHAT i. Mean, yeah and he insisted in
bringing his kid to bringing a Little ricky to the
ring and all. THAT i, mean you see people as
much as you think people like, that the rest of
fans didn't like it at. All, yeah they Wanted Ricky.
Dragon the girls want A Ricky steamboat. Alone and the
girls loved. Him god hand Some. Hawaiian.
Speaker 3 (01:18:10):
Yeah an he won was THE Nwa Heavyweight champion after this, match.
Speaker 1 (01:18:14):
Yep now what's the aftermath of?
Speaker 4 (01:18:16):
This So Ricky steamboat won THE Nwa World championship title.
Belt and then this was the first you mentioned earlier
of the epic. Trilogy you had The class of The
class of The, champions Which steamboat won, again and Then
Russell war which you recapture THE Nwa heavyweight, title and
this set up The flair versus Funk i quit.
Speaker 3 (01:18:35):
Match.
Speaker 2 (01:18:35):
Yeah, god it was brutally almost broke my. Neck Terry
funk in.
Speaker 4 (01:18:40):
The nineteen ninety one you would have your first stint
IN wwf before returning TO wcw nineteen ninety.
Speaker 3 (01:18:45):
Three steamboat would retire in ninety four and you both
would be inducted INTO. Wwell, now what was it like
to go to THE. Wwf, oh it was. GREAT i
had to get. AWAY i remember this guy named jim
Or hurd me cut my hair and call Me sparta
because it was a terrible.
Speaker 2 (01:19:03):

Issues so WHEN i cut my hair and walk into the,
airport nobody knew WHO i. WAS i Want, god damn,
it this is. Bullshit mc flair got, Haircut, OKAY i
(01:19:23):
still bored the plane first.
Speaker 1 (01:19:24):

was an all time?
Speaker 1 (01:19:34):
Classic, well the thing of it Is steamboat AND i
had so anymore before that were probably even.
Speaker 2 (01:19:39):
Better SO i. DIDN'T i didn't think it would have
been a, classic BUT i over the over the, years
it just keeps coming around and around and, around and,
UH i just think the thing that made it so
much different than, now is that the rules are different
and everybody's you, know they practiced so, long and you
(01:20:04):
know some guys don't like getting. HIT i hate Steam
boot as hard AS i could, hit and he never
flinched and HE i mean he hit me, back BUT
i mean it just just it was just a great
chemistry of two. Guys there's there's the greatest worker of all,
time right, There, Sean.
Speaker 3 (01:20:23):

they changed it At. Chavez they used to have this steam.
Thing they would put the whole thing in there and
you'd hear go and they would steam the. Tortilla now
they have this thing where they put it on the flat.
Thing BUT i remember back in the day it'd make
the tortilla super super. CHEWY i love that spot so

go with a they had a hot, dog they would slice,
(01:36:27):
it put it on like sour dough french, roll And
i'd get a buloz AND i would dip it in.
There OR i go roastby, sandwich or they had great
stuffing and great turkey. Gravy and THEN i always they
always had crisp. Salad you get a cold crisp salad
And i'd add beats and they'd throw a lot of
ranch on it and then you cut it up in
your ranch would get all. RED i love that. Place.
