Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm Sam Mullins and this is Go Boy. We open
on the frosty grounds of a Canadian reformatory in the
year nineteen fifty four. Every night, the type of young
men your mom used to warn you about make the

(00:21):
five hundred meter track from the gymnasium to the barracks.
Among their ranks are certified robbers, thieves, and killers. But
there's one young man I really want you to see,
Roger Karan. If this story has a hero, and I
would argue it does, it's him. Roger's eyes flicked to

(00:48):
the fences topped with barbed wire, his body coursing with adrenaline.
Because this wasn't just any night. This was the night
a legend was born. Suddenly Roger made a break for it.
He bolted, Roger steths pound the frozen ground, and as

(01:13):
he leaps onto the fence, he hears a chant has
broken out among the inmates, and the distance the boys
across the field were chanting the thing that inmates in
that era, in that region would chant whenever anyone would
make a break for it. Atop that fence, covered in

(01:36):
his own blood, this was the moment Roger became Go Boy.
The fist fighting, bank robbing, jail breaking icon. Roger Caron
was sixteen, first convicted. They had called him mad dog
can't Rojia Karen forty two has spent twenty four of
those years in jail. Roger was in and out of

(01:58):
nearly every maximum security penitentiary in Canada, but walls couldn't
hold him. I got his hack from bars all time.
That's what kep him going, was the CHAUNI of giving
it to the other side of the wall. Finally, they
had no choice but to send Roger to the only
place he couldn't escape, the hole. It was here, in

(02:24):
the most unlikely place you can imagine that Roger, a
man with almost no education, found his voice on the
concrete floor. And then I grabbed a pencil and I
wrote and wrote. I wrote. What started off as a
therapeutic creative outlet blossomed into the story that would shock
a nation. Why I was to take off my shirt

(02:48):
and you're see my wide This totally crisscross from bob
wire knife wound, jumping through windows. Go Boy is the
journey from the depths of rock bottom to the soaring
heights of fame and fortune. And he was instantly a celebrity.

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
