Speaker 1 (00:00):
What's up you all time for Go Fight Win, the
show with all the high school football stories you love.
On this week's episode, we got a player with down
syndrome who scored a touchdown on a wonderful senior night.
We have a Massachusetts high school football coach who's won
sixteen state championships, in part in that terrible Boston mass accent.

(00:26):
This more like it right here. We also have a
California high school football team. They don't say high school
football like that out there, but that's how I'm gonna
say it right now. California high school football team with
a pregame penalty for taunting. Did it pay off? We'll
find out it's all coming up on this week's episode

(00:47):
of Go Fight Win. Let's roll if you have the
battle to Donny Cougin, let that pudge you know all
right here on Go Fight Win. It's the show with
all the high school football stories you love. We got

(01:09):
two stories off the top that are feel good, inspirational,
great accomplishments. One that's a little spicier. We'll start with
the old Lime high school football program and the headline
here out of Connecticut Insider is a Connecticut high school
football player with down syndrome is the heart and soul

(01:29):
of his school's playoff team, Old Lime. L y me
they have a senior on their team with down syndrome,
and as they write here at CT Insider, Bryant Carpenter
and his lead says, the Old Lime High School senior
with down syndrome is just one of those kids who
knows everybody, and everybody knows him. He's talking about Peter Kohn.

(01:53):
His nickname is the Mayor. What a badass nickname that is.
By now they probably know what Kon did on November
twenty first, playing for the Valley Regional Old Lime football team,
in which case they might start to call him Touchdown Pete.
Anytime someone has multiple nicknames, you know you don't mess
with them. Yeah, multiple nicknames, dude, you've earned them. And

(02:20):
the key to a nickname is if you don't like
your nickname and your vocal about it, it's gonna stick.
Don't let people know if they try to give you
a nickname and you don't like it, don't tell them
you don't like it, because then you're just gonna get it.
But the best nicknames that are earned are from people
that have earned them and they're worthy. I think about

(02:43):
Bruce Springsteen, the Boss. I don't even know how he
got that nickname, but it's a good one. Johnny Cash,
the man in black, Elvis the King. Well, Old Lime
High School has the mayor, which is not as powerful

(03:03):
as a king, but we are here in America and
the mayor's still a pretty important person. Touchdown Pete. That
denotes that you score touchdowns. Or maybe your nickname is
Pizza Pete. That was the play call on the last

(03:25):
snap of twenty five to eight Senior Night victory over
Coventry Wyndom Tech Bolton. Why do all these schools up
north have so many freaking names? Just pick one, man,
who are you trying to impress? Just pick a name?
I digress. The Warriors dialed up Pizza Pete to Coon,

(03:48):
and the running back took it fifty one yards to
the house. Here's what the mayor had to say about it.
I just focused on my speed in my distance, Coon recounted.
I focused on my head and I focused on what
my coach said. He said, don't give up. Coon deeked
out two guys at the goal line and his teammates

(04:09):
at the at the line of scrimmage rather, and his
teammates escorted him the rest of the way and swarmed
him in the end zone. I love that the writer
of this article, Bryant Carpenter, points out, you know a
lot of times when we see these clips and they're
viral and they are feel good, and you know, you think, okay, whatever,

(04:32):
they just gave him the score, he has down syndrome. Well,
here's what Brian has to say about it. A cynic
might say it wasn't really a touchdown, that it was contrived,
that that other school with all the names is a
just being you know, there's they're just showing some good
sportsmanship and they allowed him to score. But it's also
true that it was a touchdown that was very much earned.

(04:54):
Cohon has been part of the Valley Regional Old line
football program since his freshman year. He goes to practice,
he goes through drills, He supports his teammates and they
support him. He's been through the ups and down, said
senior quarterback Giovanni. Winter's great name. Last year we were
one to nine. He was upset last year and this
year he was waiting all year for that one run,

(05:17):
and he was excited. He was so excited. He's been
practicing this touchdown dance since July. He's been a part
of us, and this is not some gimmick, said Valley
head coach Hill Gabun GABUNBLEI gbu n b l e E.
Team's got some names. Son. He's a heart and soul kid.

(05:38):
He comes to practice. I'm his position coach running back drills.
He's right there with each and every one of us.
He's a part of this and we wrap our arms
around him and fully embrace him. Peter, do you feel
like you're a part of this team? Yes, he said
in the tumult of Valley's dramatic twenty two to eighteen
win over HadAM killing Worth on Tuesday night. I do.

(06:03):
The Warriors will play at Ansnia have a tradition of inclusion.
Just before Coon arrived, cal Miller, another player with Down syndrome,
suited up for Valley and Kuhn also hails from a
football family. He is the seventh of Adam and Margaret
Kuhn's eight children, five were boys. All five played football.

(06:27):
Eli's the eldest at Saint Bernard, David and Joseph at
Valley and now Peter and his younger brother, Paul, a
sophomore Valley. Just some biblical names and some biblical accomplishments.
Coach Hill has been a big part of welcoming him
and making him a full part of the team, said
Margaret Kuhn. He's all about including him and making sure

(06:48):
he's got a space on the team. I'm very, very
touched by Coach Hill creating such a family out of
the team so that everyone gets a place, so that
all the boys recognize his gifts and that sort of
thing is right in Gabunbley's wheelhouse. That was not a typo.
I guess his last name is really spelled gb u

(07:08):
n b l ee. I mean that is some We
got a couple stories in here. That's the name. Gabunbley
is a special education teacher as well. I know the
benefit of having such an inclusive environment for the kids.
It enriches them as much as it enriches cal or

(07:29):
p d or any other kid who decides they want
to come and be a part of this, because it's
representative of the community and that's exactly what it should be.
Peter started playing football in the East Lime Youth League
before signing on with Valley. He also participates in unified
sports in the Miracle League of Southeastern Connecticut's basketball program.

(07:50):
Way to go, Pete, multi sport athlete, but football is
his number one game. My dad and me love to
watch football. He said. How many of us can say that?
That's just an American story right there, and one that
warms a lot of hearts. He loves to sing, he paints,
he draws. He's a renaissance man, says his mama. His

(08:14):
chemistry teacher said, I don't know how he's doing it,
but he's balancing chemical equations, not on paper. Should not
be able to do it, but he is. He's a
motivated student, and he's scoring touchdowns. And he's done it
before in JV games. He did it in varsity for
the first time against that other school with all the names.

(08:37):
And I tell you, man, when I say that this
show is all about the high school football stories you love.
You know, I don't know how many of y'all are
listening to this show right now, but I know this
is why you tune in for it, and this is
why I continue to do it. A little dusty in
this recording studio right now. It's just beautiful, man, And

(09:04):
I love. I'll go back to it again before we
move on. I love that the writer sportswriter brought up
the cynical. People may see that this was just a gimme,
but so few of these stories point out how long
these guys dedicate their time and give up whatever else

(09:29):
they could be doing, whatever else they need to be doing. Therapy,
where doctors' visits, they get scheduled around, they get moved
around so they can accommodate their love for their team game,
their love to be around other people. Man to go,

(09:52):
Way to go, Pete the mayor taking it in for six.
All right, This story here out of w CVB, Boston's
News Leader Channel five on ABC. John Debassio, John Dibaszo.

(10:15):
John Dibiaso won his first high school head coaching job
in nineteen eighty two at Saint Patrick, Saint Pat's Saint
Piety's in what a Town. Fast forward to twenty twenty
four and Catholic Memorials Super Bowl win. They called the

(10:36):
state championship the super Bowl up there. A little aggressive,
a little aggressive, but it is what it is. They
want a ship and it was coach Dibbs's sixteenth high
school championship in twenty three title appearances. I did think
that I was going to be a coach. I had
no idea that we'd be as successful that I'd be

(10:58):
at four schools. Coach Dibbs. He's won twelve championships with Everett,
three with Catholic Memorial. And that math doesn't add up
because they say it was sixteen. So it's either fifteen

(11:20):
or sixteen. The X is and the o's, the wins
and the losses, those come along with it, said Coach Dibbs.
Being around young people like my wife. He's got a
young wife. Congress to him and I have been for
the okay, he's been around He and his wife have

(11:40):
been around young people for thirty seven years we've been married.
Congrats coach. Guys just winning all over the place, dubs
all over the walls. Coach Dibbs doesn't plan on putting
the whistle down anytime soon. No, we're not retiring, said
Coach Dibbs. Both still in good health. My mind's are young,

(12:03):
and it keeps your mind young. As I said, just
think about going into your senior year. Every year you're
not growing up. Wouldn't that be great way to go?
Coach Man This guy's a force sixteen chips. What even

(12:23):
if it's only fifteen I mean, my word, that guy,
he's got the game cracked. He needs to move up.
Move up to college, coach, move on up to college.
You're doing too much. You're too good. I mean, you
got Bill Belichick going to college coaching at UNC. Maybe

(12:46):
you got those Boston ties and you can get on
the staff there are UNC. There's been a lot of
coaches and that have made it from high school to college.
But hey, look, if you're just trying to influence the
high school coach players and they on a great things,
good for you. And I love this the photo here
in the article I've got a link to in the

(13:06):
show description here. It's just the back of coach's head.
Photojournalism is dead. Photojournalism is it has it has perished sadly.
But who cares because coach doesn't need a good photo
from WCVB Channel five to prove that he is a champ.

(13:31):
He's done it fifteen or sixteen times. I don't, I
don't know for sure, but way to go, courch last
story going out to the West Coast. Soon's a little
spicy high school on sports Illustrated wrote this story California

(13:58):
high school football team haunts tries to intimidate opponent before
CIF State football playoff game. All right, uh, Tarik fatall
fatall man, I'm having trouble with names today. Y'all bear
with me. Tariq wrote this, nothing like theater before a

(14:24):
big high school football game. I'm gonna read this like
John Facinda, especially when a trip to this CIF State
championship game is on the line. San Diego Lincoln ran
onto the field before kickoff against Newbury Park. Now this
is more like it. These are two schools and they

(14:45):
only have a couple names. There's no hyphens, there's no backslashes,
there's just names, one name each. San Diego Lincoln. It's
a town, it's a president. Newbury Park Okay, it's a name,
it's a place. Do we need all the names? Do

(15:06):
we need all the hyphens? Do we need all the
separated names? No? Take a note from this, Connecticut, Take
a note from this, Massachusetts. We just have a couple names.
San Diego Lincoln ran onto the field before kickoff against
Newbury Park and clearly planned to try and intimidate the

(15:29):
visiting Panthers by running over to their sideline and talking
trash Friday Night and the cif State Division one doublea
So Cal Regional ballgame. Now that's California for you. In Texas,
the you got a lot of divisions, you got a
lot of leagues. They're big states. I get it. Massachusetts
and Connecticut, y'all are the smallest states. We got Rhode Island.

(15:52):
I bet y'all got this too. Why do we have
so many daggum names in the smallest states? A lot
of divisions, a lot of region names in big states?
I get it. Higher population. I'm fired up right now.
Over these over these names sound like coach Saban, so

(16:14):
quit asking. The commotion nearly started a fight. Well, I
tell you, in South Georgia, by god, it would have
started a fight and they'd still be going Newberry Park
coach Joe Smiegel, these names are killing me today. Man,
you're Joe Smiegel? Are you gollum? Precious? Coach Precious is

(16:41):
scene yelling at Lincoln players and coaches while referees try
and use their bodies to keep the two teams separated.
The Spectrum broadcast team said there were three penalty flags
issued to Lincoln prior to the game starting did it matter?
Did it matter? Let's set the stage. Newberry Park fourteen
to oher. They beat murray Atta Valley thirty one, twenty eighth.

(17:05):
The week before Lincoln was ten and two. They won
the Open Division. I don't know what that means. Are
that wild card team? I don't know? But one team
was unbeaten, one team had lost two games. Well, the
winner of the game would go on to play in
the State Division one double a final against the winner

(17:26):
of Fulsom and Pittsburgh. Is that two Johnny Cash references
on the show Fullsome Prison in Time keeps draging home? Well,
here's what happened newbury Park. This is from AOL. These
teams are getting some national coverage. Eric Sondheimer out of

(17:48):
the La Times rights Newberry Park suffers crushing defeat to
San Diego Lincoln. Oh oh, looks like the trash talk
paid off. And if you're a coach, this story is
one that you bury and and if it was still
a paper, you would bear it. You'd burn the newspapers

(18:11):
because you don't want your players to see that talking
trash works. But it did in this case, because Newbury
Park lost its fifteenth game after winning fourteen straight twenty
one point two seconds left, Lincoln quarterback Akielee Smith throws

(18:39):
the go ahead touchdown, gave Lincoln its first lead to
the game, and they will get to play Pittsburgh, who
beat full some Prison twenty eight twenty seven. So way
to go, I guess to Lincoln, Sandy, I go Lincoln,

(19:02):
Oh baby. Sometimes you bring the juice and the juice
fills your cup. Sometimes you bring the juice and you
spill it all over the tray. Look, I got a
nearly two year old, four year old who's lived through it.
It depends on what you bring. You bring a juice,

(19:25):
a cup full of juice that's going to fill you up,
propel you to victory, or is that juice just gonna
lead to a tantrum. Well, it led to a big
old fat dub for Lincoln. Y'all. The season is nearing
an end. I currently have next week's next week's episode,

(19:49):
Come on, Wes, finish strong, don't let your tongue tie
you up. Next week's episode I have penciled in as
our final episode of the season. I appreciate everyone who
listens to go fight, win each and every week. If
you're a high school football coach, Please tell your fellow
coaches about it. Go check out coach dooleaselist dot com.

(20:09):
If you're playing for a state title, go get it.
If you did not win a state title this year,
keep working for it. And I appreciate y'all more than
you know. I love high school football, I love the
stories that it allows us to enjoy. And we'll see

(20:31):
you next week. God bless
