Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome, Welcome, Welcome to the Gold Medal Mindset Podcast. I
am your host, Barna Huckabee, three time Paralympic gold medalist snowboarder,
here to encourage you to live a gold medal life,
one that is full of confidence, resilience, empowerment so that
you can be successful in your goals without sacrificing your
mental health and the things you care about most in

(00:21):
this world. Welcome to today's podcast episode where we learn
to crush our goals with confidence, the secret to measuring
our goals for success. Last week we talked about the
S in the smart goals, which stands for specific, and
today we are going to talk about the M, which
is measuring. But you know how I like to do,

(00:41):
We're going to add a little twist. A lot of
this information is quite old and so we've learned so
much more about goal setting, goal progress, goal achieving, and
making sure that it comes from a place of self
love and not self sacrifice. And that is what I
am going to share with you today as we dive
into the M of the smart goal. So what is

(01:03):
the M? The M stands for measuring your goal. Measuring
your goal provides a clear roadmap that enables progress. You
can track it. It allows you to have strategy adjustments
towards your desired outcome. Without measuring your progress. Without measuring
what you are doing, how are you going to know
that you are on the right track to where you
are goaling? Measuring our progress helps us understand effective actions.

(01:26):
That contributes to achieving your goals. When you measure your
progress and you achieve your goal and then you embark
on a new one, you can always go back and
see how you did things, where things went well, where
things went wrong, and how you could adjust to do
better next time. Now, the key to having measurable goals
is there needs to be a specific target that serves

(01:47):
as a benchmark for your success. Okay, and when you're
doing this, you want it to be quantifiable. And what
does that mean. It means, if you remember from math
class back in like fifth grade, it's how much? How many? Right?
So you want it to have a number and something
that you can go for goal post that you can reach. Now,
you want this goal post to be challenging, but not

(02:08):
so hard that it's discouraging. That is like your big
overall goal and these like measurable goals within that is
just going to make for clear direction and a path
to get to that bigger goal. You have your big goal,
you're going to measure it with breaking down that big
goal into smaller tasks that you can monitor your progress with. Now,

(02:30):
I want to be a little bit clear here. When
I talk about breaking down your bigger goal into smaller tasks,
I don't mean sub goals. I have a little bit
of a problem with sub goals because I think our
brains stop looking at the bigger picture when we have
a lot of sub goals. Right. For instance, if your
goal is to lose ten pounds, I hate that. I
hate that we're going into the weight loss. But I

(02:52):
don't know. Maybe it's the programming, because that's all I
can think about in this moment. But let's say your
goal is to lose ten pounds and your sub goals
are to lose two, four, six, eight, ten. Sometimes when
we're doing that, it could limit progress because maybe you'll
be like, Okay, well I lost six, so that's good enough. Instead,
when I want you to break down into smaller tasks,
I want it to be more of like eating more

(03:13):
fruits and vegetables on your plate, going to the gym,
three times a week, these like quantifiable daily to dos
rather than lose two pounds to lose four pounds, like
this is going to help you track and see like, Okay,
this is what I'm doing to get to my goal
instead of having smaller sub goals, just because I don't
think that's a really great way to measure your progress, right,

(03:33):
I mean, in some ways it is right because like, Okay,
I've lost two pounds, four pounds, six pounds, eight pounds.
Clearly I'm on the path to losing ten. But there
could be a better way to get there. There could
be a healthier way to get there, and maybe we're
kind of missing that in the process of not tracking
how you're actually losing that weight, and so again, that
can go for way more than just losing weight. I
think it's just like that's stupid, annoying female programming where

(03:54):
my brain just went straight to weight loss. Do have
to hate that sometimes? Anyway, how do you measure your progress?
There are some other ways besides breaking it down, And
I have to do this, y'all, Like I will if
I don't put this in my calendar, like it's gone forever.
If I don't see my to dos daily. They're gone forever,
and so one way is to put it in your calendar.
Include the timeframes for checking in your progress, setting reminders

(04:17):
of like, oh crap, it's I gotta go to the
gym three days this week. Well it's Wednesday and I'm
supposed to go to Wednesday. I had a reminder set
in my phone. So reach out to your accountability buddy,
being sure that Hey, like you said you were gonna
come the gym with me, Like, let's go. And so
just have another people on that journey with you and
another thing that I love to do, y'all. This is
something I do every single night, even when I don't
feel like it. I remind myself, hey, future Brenna is

(04:39):
really going to benefit from this if you will, please
do it. As I journal my progress every single night,
I ask myself questions like what can I improve? What
went well? How am I feeling? What made me happy?
What can I forgive myself for? So I really am
monitoring like my progress from a more holistic approach, because
it can be really easy to get so caught up
in our goals, get so caught up in our progress,

(05:00):
get so caught up in our achievement, that we forget
that's not the purpose of life. The purpose of life
is for us to experience these goals, to experience life.
And so whenever I do these nightly check ins, I'm
not only checking to see how I'm doing with the achievement,
but I'm more specifically looking at how am I enjoying
the experience of going for this goal. And sometimes I

(05:20):
find like, Okay, I'm giving up like my family life,
or I'm really not feeling so happy right now, and
I feel stressed out and i feel burnt out, and
maybe I'm like last night I wrote down like I
feel like I'm running a sprint, not a marathon, Like
where can I make an adjustment? And so this is
really just going to make sure that you're measuring your
progress in just a more well rounded, no self sacrifice way,

(05:43):
and that you're not giving up things that you love
in life, and so journaling your progress from that set
up a reward system. Well, treat yourself. Okay, let the
progress that you are making have a prize at the
end of it, but make sure that the prize meets
the progress, right Like, so don't be like I'm a
I'm going to step a new car because I went
to the three times this week. You know, sometimes it

(06:03):
could be like I'm gonna get a new water bottle, right,
like something kind of fun that's going to make you
feel good and remind yourself, like, oh, I do get
a little bit of dopamine from doing this task. And
as somebody with ADHD, dopamine is really hard for me
to come by and I'm always trying to find new
ways to get it so that I stay on progress
with my goals. And that is one way that I
have found to really help me. Additionally, having accountability buddies

(06:26):
maybe that's like publicly or I just don't trust anybody
with them, and having my own journal and my own
way of being accountable has really been helpful. And again
I kind of said this a little bit before, but
having that mindset that this is going to help future
me to me to make sure that I'm looking out
for them, and it's a lot easier to jump back in.
It's a lot easier to say, you know what, like
I have made this progress, I do still love. This

(06:47):
is for me. I want to experience this. I want
to keep going. It's going to help you keep going.
And also, like maybe you have been just freaking grinding
at it day in and day out, and you're like,
I want to quit, Like I'm not seeing the progress.
It's like I suck at this. Whatever measurable tools is
going to remind you, like I said, and why you
started in the process, the success that you are going through,

(07:08):
even if you don't feel it, do it might keep
you that success that you were waiting for, That breakthrough
moment that you've been waiting for could just be like
one or two days away. I don't want to see
people giving up on their goals because they haven't seen
for themselves the success that they have created because they're
not tracking yet. Lastly, is we're going to make these
progress trackers easy and repeatable. Okay, so you want to

(07:29):
you don't want to have to think too hard on them.
Break it down, break it down, break it down. So
one way that I use in my day and actually
so as somebody again with ADHD like, consistency is so
hard for me, dope them is so hard for me.
It's so hard for me to keep going and I
really don't feel like it. And one app that I
have found that has really really changed the way that
I show up in my life is the Habitica app.

(07:50):
I've talked about this on my Instagram. It basically makes
your to do list into like a tamagotchi. So you
have to like keep your little animal alive. You have
to show up every single day, keep your life animal live.
If you don't show up, your animal dies. I've killed
them a few times and I feel so bad and
I'm like, oh my gosh, no, I don't want to
kill my little animal again. I need to show up
and track my progress. And this kind of keeps like
to do's so much like more manageable, because if you

(08:14):
don't put them down on paper or put them down somewhere,
it just stays in your brain. And oh my goodness, honey,
I can't have any more stuff in my brain. So
the Habitka app allows me clearly put out my to
do list. I can put like an end date on it,
I can put it into my calendar from there, and
it's freedom. And also this is not sponsored by them.
This is just something that has helped me so much
in facilitating my success and measuring my goals and what

(08:35):
I have accomplished. And you also get a little rewards,
so once you like show up you not only keep
your little guy alive, but you want to get coins.
And I have it set up to like, if I
get fifty coins, I get to go have like a
coffee out. If I got one hundred coins, I get
a new workouts set like I have this. I will
warn you though, if you kill your pet, you lose
all your coins and you have to start over, and
that is not fun. But it has been a really
great way for me to show up. So I really

(08:57):
hope you try it. Let me know in the comments
or on social media if you try the habitica app.
I've put a few of my friends on it and
they love it, so let me know. I can't wait
to now you know anything about me, I like to
get a little woo. I like to make sure that
everything I'm doing is intentional. And if you were in
the last episode, then you know a little bit about
this already. But we want to make sure that we're
programming our unconscious mind to achieve our goals. The reason

(09:19):
is is because when we get our unconscious mind on board,
they are such a great facilitator for success. Three ways
that like I didn't share in the last episode that
I want to really make sure that I am driving
home in this one is a making sure it's specific.
I guess we did technically talk about that in the
last episode, so if you didn't hear it, go listen.
But you want it to be specific. You want to
have clear direction. You don't want your brain to be
thinking about where the heck they need to go. When

(09:40):
it's specific and clear in detail, you know where you're
trying to go. You're not having to try and make
it up on the fly every single day. So making
sure that that is happening is going to really just
calm that unconscious mind. The second thing is making sure
that your emotions are attached to it. And by doing this,
you want to be really purposeful when you're setting your
goal and when you're measuring your goals. You want to
make sure that you're really a line. It is something

(10:01):
that you want it, you have your whole, whole heart
and chest into it. And so when you do that,
I also want you to think about anything that could
be holding you back emotionally when you think about your goals.
And these are called limiting beliefs, and they come up
in the sneakiest of ways, y'all. So the way to overcome.
This is being a self aware of them, notice them,
to sit in them, understand where they came from, and

(10:22):
three start writing them when they come up. When they
pop up, you say, ah, wait doing this today. I
choose this more powerful approach and the more you do this,
easier it is. And I highly recommend yeah, either having
a coach, a mindset coach that can help you through this,
or a therapist if it's something that you really want
to like talk back and reflect on. And I use
both for this specific purpose because that is, honestly the

(10:44):
biggest reason that people are successful or unsuccessful. It is
these unconscious beliefs that they have yet to work out.
A lot of mindset work is going to help, and
until you tap into that, you will find a lot
of resistance when it comes to achieving your goal. That
brings us to the third part is visualize that success. Y'all.
There is so much power in visualization and the more

(11:07):
that you do it, the easier it become. Even if
it's five minutes every night before you go to bed,
just seeing yourself be successful, allow yourself to feel it,
but then the rest of the day let it go.
You don't want to be so caught up in your
achievement and what you're trying to get that you miss
out on living life. So setting this intentional time to
visualize yourself successful is really going to help your brain,
help your motivation, help the way that you feel around

(11:27):
your goal. But then let it go. That's a time
and a place to focus on that outcome and then
the rest of the time you're going to experience the process.
We got that out of the way. We love some
lou But next superpower is finding a way to stay present.
And I really feel like this helps goal setting because
it helps you set meaningful goals and it allows you
to be mindful in the present moment of like how

(11:48):
you actually feel when you are achieving these goals, and
when you check off a new thing on your to
do list, it's going to be a lot easier to
reflect upon how you actually felt in that moment, which
is going to allow you to know like, am I
on the right path? And am I making progress? Do I
care that I'm making progress? And I know, like it's
sometimes in life our goals are set because they kind
of have to, but for the most part, we are

(12:09):
in control of where we want to go. In this
life and making sure that hey, like, I am paying
attention to exactly what I'm doing, and I am mindful
in this moment, and this is aligned with me, or
this isn't aligned with me, And this isn't aligned with me,
not because of some kind of unconscious belief that I've
yet to work out, but it's not aligned with me
because I just don't care anymore. And so being present
in that moment, experiencing what you are doing, experiencing that

(12:32):
progress is really going to allow you to see how
much you actually care and where you may lack in
your everyday life. You might be thinking of, Okay, bron No,
that's great. You gave me the example of losing weight,
which I don't really care about. You gave me the
example of the Paralympics. I'm not going to the Paralympics.
Can you give me an example that might be more tangible.
So an example that I have that I've been thinking
about is saving money. I feel like we could all
save a little bit more money. Maybe you're trying to

(12:53):
save money for a house. Maybe it's a five thousand
dollars let's say, for a down payment on a house
in the next year, and You're going to do this
by creating a budget and reducing your expenses. Right, So
this is your goal. You're like, I got my goal,
I know the timeframe, I know how I'm going to
do it. But what are those measuring tools, those to
dos that you can do in the process, and how
you can track if it's actually working? And again the

(13:15):
reason that we're tracking is it actually working. You could
go a month and you're like, wait, I didn't see
a single benefit from this. What are you going to do?
Hopefully you're going to change it right so that you
do start seeing a benefit. Maybe you go a month,
you didn't see a benefit, you changed it, You go
another month and it got better. Then you go another
month and then it got worse and you're like, what
the heck happened here? And you're able to look at
it and make these adjustments and make sure that you're

(13:38):
making your path to success forward. Again, it's not going
to be linear. You're going to have some stepbacks and failures.
But what you do is you adjust and you make
it better. So getting back to that example, saving five
thousand dollars for a down payment on a house in
the next year by creating a budget and reducing those
unnecessary expenses. The first thing you're going to do is
you're going to budget your income. Right, you're expensive. You're

(14:00):
going to identify the areas where your expenses can be reduced.
You need to know how the heck to do this.
You have to sit down and look at it. Then
you're going to reduce the unnecessary expenses by cutting back
on non essential purchases, maybe going out to eat, maybe
it's some subscriptions, entertainment, whatever it is, you're going to
cut back on those experiences. And I know throughout my journey,

(14:20):
as I was saving mone you notice it's like, Okay,
I'm going to cut this out. And then you go
a month and you're like this is unsustainable, Like I
actually really enjoy this and I cannot go eleven more
months without it, So where can I cut something else
that I could have this? And again you're not going
to know until you track it. And what's going to
happen to or what could happen if you don't track
it is you're going to go maybe two months and
you've just been suffering and powering through, and it's going

(14:42):
to lead to burnout. It's going to lead to being
really upset. Maybe mental wellness is just in the toilet.
So tracking, again, is just such a powerful tool to
make sure that you are achieving your goals and just
some more holistic approach. So the next thing, maybe you
set up an automatic savings plan. Boom, the money goes
in each month. See how that works. You're going to
track that progress and you're just gonna see and adjust

(15:05):
how you're doing towards that five thousand dollars. It sounds
like so simple, but once you really start putting your emotions,
your unconscious beliefs, your mindsets towards money, you realize like
holy shit, like yes, this is so simple in terms
of like what I need to do, but day to
day like this is really hard and this is really sucky,
and so how can I make it better? And again,

(15:27):
that's why we measure our progress. So basically, to wrap
this guy up, having measurable goals, it's kind of like
using your Google maps. You need to know where the
heck you're going. You need to know how far you've gone,
and you know which turn you need to take to
reach your destination. Right, So having goals and being able
to measure them is basically your GPS your road map

(15:47):
for life, and if you can't measure it, it's like
trying to find your way around New City without a map,
Like you're just wandering, unless it's all like city because
like that that place is actually very easy to go
without a map. But anyway, you're just wandering aimlessly, hope
and a stumble upon your desk. And if you're anything
like me, you don't end up stumbling upon your destination.
But hey, you know what, I'm going to actually take
this and run with it, because sometimes you might stumble

(16:10):
into a new destination that is actually far better than
you expected. I still recommend having goals in your Google
Maps because you can still do that even with goals. Anyway,
let's get back to it, and measuring your goals means
you know exactly what you're aiming for. You're hitting bull's eyes,
you're tracking your progress along the way, You're watching the
score increase every time you hit a throw. You know
it's a good game, but you want to challenge, so

(16:32):
you don't want to totally beat it down. You want
to make sure that your goals are challenging but not impossible.
And yeah, you just want goals. I keep you on
track and make you have just a well rounded life.
And so you're not giving up the things that actually
make you happy, you're giving up the stuff that is
in your way. And so I encourage you guys to
apply these tips in your life. I encourage you to

(16:54):
listen to the last episode on specific goals, and I
look forward to having you guys in the Alive to
Action episode which is next. And that's the essential key
to mastering your goals for success because you can have
all the tools, you can have all the plans, but
unless you're taking a lined action, you're not going to
go anywhere. And I'm excited to talk to you guys
about that in the next episode. If you want more,
