Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Good Game with Sarah Spain, where word to
boys to men, We've come to the end of the
road with producer Mesh. It's Monday, October thirteenth, Happy Indigenous
People's Day. Hope you take a moment today to find
out what native land you reside on if you haven't already,
It's good to learn about and pay respect to the
people indigenous to your area. On today's show, Big Citrus
(00:21):
will react to the Las Vegas Aces WNBA finals, sweep,
tie a bow on the WNBA season, and send our
first born out into the world. Baby Mesh is leaving
the nest Third Growth plus the only good reason to
go to Times Square, Sorry Elmo, the NWSL sticking with
its commissioner, and Coco Golf picks up another title. It's
(00:42):
all coming up right after this welcome back. Here's what
you need to know today. Slices first, and most importantly,
(01:02):
a reminder that Mish is leaving us, and thanks to
a request from Super Slice Justin Baird, we'll start today's
news with a twenty one baby salute in Young Misha's honor.
Please remove your hats, place your hand over your heart,
and face a flag. Whatever flag you like. Okay, let's
(01:47):
move on. In WNBA news, the champs are here. The
Las Vegas Aces took care of business and completed a
sweep of the Phoenix Mercury with a ninety seven eighty
six win Friday night in Game four of the league's
first best of seven WNBA Finals. Asia Wilson really said
seven games. That's cute. We'll do it in four. This
marks the Ace's third title in four seasons and solidifies
(02:11):
their dynasty. Vegas is now the only team to win
at least three titles in a four year span since
the Houston Comets won four straight at the league's inception
from ninety seven to two thousand. The m Apostrophe VP
was unstoppable yet again, stuff in the stat sheet with
thirty one points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.
(02:31):
Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray put up numbers as well.
Both finished with eighteen points. Colia Kopper led the Merk
with thirty points, her highest scoring total of the playoffs
this season, and Alyssa Thomas contributed in true at fashion
a seventeen point, twelve rebound, ten assists triple double. But
it wasn't enough to keep the Mercury season alive. The
game was pretty much out of reach for most of
(02:53):
the first half, and Phoenix trailed by as many as
twenty points, but they fought back in the third and
closed the gap to twelve. Unfortunately, their momentum was stifled
when head coach Nate Tibbets picked up two quick technical
fouls late in the third and was ejected from the game.
Per ESPN, the head official for the contest told a
reporter that Tibbets earned his first tech for saying quote,
(03:14):
that's terrible end quote after a foul call on guard
Monique a Cola Mokhanni. The head officials said Tibbets then
stepped in closer toward the ref on the court and
yelled that's sing terrible again to draw the second tech.
Tibbets addressed his ejection in the postgame presser here he is.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
It's embarrassing. I feel bad that I was tossed. I mean,
I've been.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
Around this game a long time.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
I mean, I just I think it's one of the
weakest double technicals ever. I didn't even know that I
got the second one. To be completely honest, I just
I just I don't understand it. I feel bad for
our team, our fans, my family, Like it's just it's
like it wasn't needed in my opinion.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Now I'm inclined to agree with them. You can watch
the moment for yourself. We'll link to it in our
show notes. Fair caller not though his Mercury took the
l and it was Vegas standing at center court awaiting
their hardware from Commissioner Kathy Engelbert. When friend of the
show Holly Row introduced Engelbert, Well, the crowd wasn't feeling it.
Take a listen, and to present the trophy for YouTube TV.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Here's WNBA Commissioner Kathy Engelbert.
Speaker 4 (04:28):
Thank you, Holly Well.
Speaker 5 (04:31):
We're here today to celebrate a champion. Thank you to
all the fans. Phoenix had a great run to get here,
and I just want to congratulate the ass on a
performance twenty twenty five WNBA Champions.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
ESPN even had to blur the shot of Engelbert on
two occasions, with the screen going gray to hide a
man in the crowd given the commissioner double middle fingers yep,
the old double bird to pair for Blue Sky user
Dana Holtzbert, he brought Larry and sue. The crowd got
back to cheering when the championship trophy was presented, and
when Asia Wilson was handed the Finals MVP trophy, her
(05:11):
second Finals MVP in three seasons and slices, she more
than deserved it. She averaged twenty eight point five points,
eleven point eight rebounds, and two blocks, and is now
the first player in WNBA history to win a Championship,
Finals MVP, League MVP, and Defensive Player of the Year
in the same season. The Aces were up to their
(05:31):
usual shenanigans again in the postgame press conference, including Wilson
in full uniform and goggles, sitting next to front of
the show Ben Pickman and other reporters while waiting for
her turn to speak, and then later letting off a
few well timed burps and giggles. It also got a
little mushy in there too, though. There was a moment
when head coach Becky Hammond's words had Wilson, Gray and
(05:52):
Young all looking down at their laps, presumably to cover
up their tears. Wilson even held the championship towel over
her face to high for emotion. Here's a bit of
Hammond's comments to the press during that moment.
Speaker 6 (06:04):
I love being their coach. I love being their coach,
I love being their friend. I love being a phone
call for them. I love pushing them, probably sometimes to
their disliking a little bit, but I'm invested in their
greatness and getting that out of them every day. And
(06:29):
I know I've shared tears with all of them along
this journey, especially this year, and this one hits different
because it was different.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
There was.
Speaker 6 (06:44):
Probably a lot more adversity than any of us anticipated.
And at the end of the day, we're all human,
and but we're humans that wanted to get it right
and get it right together. And I'm there's still with me.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
Now. That's a scene right out of our favorite sports movies. Damn.
The celebrations continue for the aces. They were recognized at
Allegiant Field ahead of the Las Vegas Raiders Tennessee Titans
NFL game on Sunday, and they'll really let loose with
a parade in Sin City on Friday. The finals weren't
just good to Asia Wilson in company, though, they were
also good to TV network's advertisers, the league, and every
(07:23):
fan rooting for the growth of women's sport. As I
mentioned last week. The ratings for Game one on ESPN
averaged one point nine million viewers and peaked at two
and a half million, making it the most watched WNBA
Finals game one in twenty eight years. And even though
ratings dipped in games two and three as the potential
for an ACES sweep grew through the first three games,
this year's Finals were still the most viewed in twenty
(07:45):
five years. Some more w News Today got to send
a shout out to all the players who made all
WNBA First and second teams. The first team includes Asia Wilson,
Alyssa Thomas, the Minnesota Lynx's Defista Collier at the Atlanta Dreams,
Ali Scha Gray, and the Indiana Fevers Kelsey Mitchell. The
roster for the second team is Jackie Young, the Seattle Storms,
neck Ogumkay, the New York Liberties Sabrini and escu A,
(08:08):
Leah Boston from the Indiana Fever, and Pagebeckers of the
Dallas Wings. Each member of the first team will get
ten thy three hundred bucks and each member of the
second team gets five one hundred and fifty hell of
a season. To all of you, and again I ask,
can I borrow a dollar onto Track and Field Athlos
NYC has concluded another event full of glitz, glamour and
(08:30):
great athletes. In case you need a refresher. ATHLOS is
a professional women's track and field meet founded by Serena
William's husband Alexis o'hanian, that had its inaugural meat in
September of last year, and they really step things up
for year two. On Thursday, ATHLOS held the first ever
long jump event in its history and they did its
smack dab in the middle of Times Square. Long jumpers
(08:52):
took their qualifying jumps in front of a big old
crowd of onlookers who got to see Olympic and World
champ Tara Davis Woodhall clear six point eight one meters
in qualifying and she went on to jump seven point
one to three meters in the final on Friday at
Icon Stadium to win the long jump competition. Other winners
included Brittany Brown in the one hundred and two hundred
(09:12):
meters Friend of the Show, Massi Russell in the one
hundred meter hurdles, Mayor Lady Paulino in the four hundred,
Kiely Hodgkinson in the eight hundred and faith Kip Jegon
in the mile. The event boasts participation not just from
elite athletes, though also some of the music industry's brightest stars.
You might remember that last year Megan the Stallion performed
at Athlos. Well, this year's headliner was Sierra and Athlos
(09:34):
founder Alexis Ohanian also got a favor from his wife Serena.
At the event, the tennis goats stepped out on stage
to place a crown atop the head of each victor,
and all the winners got sixty thousand dollars in prize
money too. This one seemed like another really fun and
entertaining event, and we're excited to watch as Athlos continues
to evolve to the NWSL. On Friday, Sportigo is the
(09:57):
first to report that league Commissioner Jessica Hurrman has been
given a contract extension through the twenty twenty eight season.
Berman's original contract was set to expire in the coming months,
and many wondered whether she'd retain her position as negotiations
around her future with the league had gone on for months.
Decisions about the commissioner are made by a board of
people led by a four person executive committee and per
(10:19):
sport Ago, the full board did not have a unanimous
opinion on how to move forward, per that same report,
once they'd approved her extension, the Executive Committee also finalized
Berman's deal without a final vote from the full board.
During Berman's tenure, the NWSL agreed to a new and
groundbreaking collective bargaining agreement with their PA, secured a two
(10:39):
hundred and forty million dollar media rights deal and the
approval of a number of expansion franchises, and saw team
valuations increase exponentially from around five million to over two
hundred and fifty million in a few years. But Berman
has also gotten flack for her handling of recent controversies,
like when the league continued a game after Angel City
player Savvy King collapsed on the field, or when she
(11:00):
reportedly threatened to find the owners of the Kansas City
Current after a disagreement over a lengthy heat delay. I'm
sure we'll have more on her extension and her plans
in the coming years in later shows. More ONWSL speaking
of the Current, they aren't fair, y'all. They just aren't fair.
Kansas City already assured the number one seed in the playoffs,
already owners of the NWSL Shield defeated Gotham FC two
(11:23):
nil on Saturday to amass a new NWSL record sixty
two points on the season. Ridiculously good and right behind
them producer Misches Washington Spirit. The Spirit played to a
one to one draw with the North Carolina Courage on Saturday,
after having already clinched the number two seed and home
field advantage in the postseason thanks to other results around
the league. We'll talk a little bit more about how
(11:44):
the NWSL postseason is shaping up a little bit later
this week to the LPGA, where we finally have a
two time winner this season. TI player Gino Tittikul won
the LPGA shang Hi title on Sunday in an extraordinary
comeback down four shots with just five whole remaining, Titikoul
forced a playoff with Minami Katsu, then took the win
(12:04):
on the fifth playoff hool. Titsikoul, who also won a
tour stop back in May, is now the only player
to win two LPGA events so far this season. Heading
into the weekend, twenty six different athletes had won across
twenty five LPGA events so far this year, including one
tie to tennis and the Wuhan Open, which concluded on
Sunday with an all American final featuring Cocoa Goff and
(12:26):
Jessica Pegoula. After Goff won the first set six', Four
pagoula took the lead in the second set and was
on the verge of sending the match to a third
set thanks to her five to three, lead But goff
managed to win four straight games to win set number
two seven to five and claimed The Wuhan open, title
her second win of the, season following a victory at
The Front open In. June in her post match, Remarks
(12:48):
goff called out her, Coach Jean Christoph, farrell who she
hired just ahead of THE Us open to help retoolers.
Serve she said That farrell quote originally didn't want me
to come BECAUSE i had a TOUGH Us, open BUT
i had to prove him. Wrong i'm a very stubborn,
person so maybe he said that on purpose for me
to have a good result here end. Quote stubborn seemed to.
Work coco stick with. Stubborn we got to take a quick.
(13:12):
Break when we come. Back we're Giving misha a big,
squeeze one last big citrus with THE og three coming up,
Next welcome Back. Slices we've been putting it, off but
this is Officially misha's last, day so this is our
(13:35):
last chance to have a chat before they head. Off
and also thanks to THE Wnba finals AND i guess
The Las Vegas aces for keeping it nice and clean
and finishing their series and this season right in time
for us to tie a bow on everything With mesh
before they. Leave so let's before we get to the sad,
goodbyes talk about The. Aces alex was, Right misha AND
(13:57):
i were?
Speaker 4 (13:58):
Wrong WAS i?
Speaker 7 (13:59):
Right we had seven? Games this was the opposite of seven.
Speaker 1 (14:03):
GAMES i wouldn't say the opposite of seven. GAMES i
would say you were a lot closer to right than
people who picked the team who got swept to, win
which is what we. Did we were way, wrong fair,
enough fair, Enough.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
Yeah, ALEX i would BE i would be rolling in
that one right.
Speaker 8 (14:19):
NOW i would be milking that for all it's, worth because, you,
literally If i'm remembering, correctly Said i'll just do it
just to be a contrary and just in, case so
if you're, WRONG i.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
Win is that not what she?
Speaker 1 (14:30):
Said pretty?
Speaker 4 (14:31):
Much we're those not the words that came out of your.
Speaker 7 (14:33):
MOUTH i, MEAN i also picked The aces to win last.
YEAR i Just i'm not going to rid Against.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
Asia you. Can't you're, Smart you're.
Speaker 4 (14:40):
Smart take your, victory Lap.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
AS i saw a couple of different places post after
The aces. Won betting on The aces was never a long.
Shot SO i think when you've Got Asia wilson at
the helm of a, team, really no matter what else
is going, on you got a pretty decent shot of
coming out on. Top and The aces. DID i, MEAN
i think for, me for as exciting as it was
to watch her be, GREAT i was just, disappointed AND
(15:02):
i think the league has to be. Disappointed when you
think about the opportunity for more, games more advertising, money more,
viewers more, discussion more, conversation more, debate everything else that
comes with a tight, series and that comes with more,
games and it sucks to have the very first time
they're rolling out a seven game series be one that
(15:24):
does not need it or even.
Speaker 4 (15:25):
Close at the same, time WHEN i think about.
Speaker 8 (15:28):
The redemption arc for The Las Vegas, Aces i'm kind of, like,
ah but it's kind of worth it because to see
them go from losing by fifty three points to you,
Know i've Seen Asia wilson post many a TikTok about
people saying she individually was, washed the team was. Washed
(15:49):
they were no longer to Be aces Of. Old they
couldn't be a dynasty. Anymore and you, know getting to
see them shove that back of people's faces that kind
of makes it worth.
Speaker 4 (15:59):
It BUT i absolutely what you.
Speaker 8 (16:00):
Mean, like the opportunity to elongate a season that was
as insane as this one was definitely a missed. Opportunity But,
PHOENIX i think they. Overperformed like for the SEASON i
thought they were gonna. HAVE i still think they.
Speaker 1 (16:12):
Overperformed, Yeah SO i think there are two different, conversations,
Right one is The aces perspective or the, story and
one is what the league would benefit the most. From
and definitely they would have preferred a longer a longer.
Series but, yeah the way The, aces essentially after that
fifty three point, loss put their foot on the gas
(16:32):
and never really let up. Impressive, yeah it's so.
Speaker 7 (16:36):
FUNNY i was thinking back to some of those early
interviews that we had In june And. July you, Know
Ben pickman came on AND i remember he was, like,
YEAH i had The aces in the finals for my preseason.
Preview and you, KNOW i look like an idiot now paraphrasing,
here BUT i think what stands out to me is
that back when The aces were, losing it wasn't, like,
(16:58):
oh they're, bad like sometimes we feel that way about,
teams like, oh they're just, Bad but it was always
instead for The, aces what's wrong with? Them why aren't
they doing? Better and that's a much more hopeful place
to be, in, Right, like it was clear that something
just wasn't, clicking and they made it, work and they
made it work when it mattered most at the end
(17:19):
of the. Season and as we've seen a lot of
times in, sports if you can't make it work in
those final few, games then your name's not going on that.
Speaker 1 (17:27):
Trophy, yeah and your point is a great. One it
was always when they're, clicking it looks like The aces of.
Old why can't they just keep that focus and that
efficacy throughout full? Games and they did that in the. Finals,
yeah they had a couple lapses where they let The
mercury back in from some pretty big, deficits but for
the most, part what we saw from The aces in
(17:50):
this final series was what we expected from them all,
season knowing the talent that they have and the coaching
that they. Have and speaking of, coaching you, KNOW i
was starting to butter Up tibbets early in the postseason
for the job he was, doing and by the, END
i was, like maybe it was just A gm putting
together a good. TEAM i, MEAN i still think that
(18:10):
he did a good job and they outperformed, expectations but
what we saw down the stretch was definitely him being
outmatched By Becky hammond when it came to adjustments in.
Speaker 4 (18:19):
Game, Yeah AND.
Speaker 8 (18:22):
I can't necessarily Say i'm surprised by that, either because
we're talking About Becky, hammond who was not only as
star as a player in this league and then went
and cut her teeth Under Greg, popovich, who you, know
men's or, women's one of the best coaches to ever do.
It SO i can't Say i'm necessarily, surprised BUT i
really do hope he learned from, this BECAUSE i don't
know what happens to The Phoenix mercury this. OFFSEASON i
(18:43):
don't know what happens to a lot of, teams, literally
but you, KNOW i, SEE i, mean they got to the,
finals you know WHAT i, Mean they still made it
to the, finals and SO i think he's gonna have
a lot of learning to. DO i hope he does
a lot of learning from. This there's no better film
film you get in the, finals you know WHAT i.
Mean and like you, said they put together a hell
(19:05):
of a. Team shout out to THEIR. GM i hope
they can figure out a way to keep a lot
of those pieces together so they can retool and look
even better down the stretch in crunch, time decision making,
wise on and off the, court and in the huddle next.
Season but, yeah he bless his, Heart that's What i'll. Say, blessed,
blessed Ni, herd.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
Blessed let's let's, again let's hedge how much criticism we
offer someone who, did in fact lead his team to
the W Nba. Finals but, yes work to, do work
for so much of the league to. Do because we
ended up with a third aces championship in four, seasons
a true. Dynasty there were a lot of. Questions i'm
not gonna say best ever yet we did have a
(19:48):
four straight series to start the w with The houston.
Comments but, YEAH i, mean obviously this is a this
is a team for the. Ages what was your favorite
moment from the cell bration the post game on the
court shouted out. MINE i think there were too. MANY
i love the tambourine being whatever PRESENT i. WAS i
(20:11):
was pretty moved By Chelsea gray getting emotional about her
son And holly sort of being, like all, right let's
end this. Interview go grab, him go find, him go
give him a, hug And chelsea was, like where where is?
Speaker 2 (20:21):
He?
Speaker 1 (20:22):
Yeah, yeah that was.
Speaker 8 (20:24):
Great, YEAH i gotta SAY i was really. Excited i'm
an Asu Arizona State Kronkite school grad and this took
place In. Phoenix obviously The aces wanted on the road In,
phoenix AND i got to see A Kronkite school.
Speaker 4 (20:39):
STUDENT i am.
Speaker 8 (20:40):
DEAN i don't think she's a student. ANYMORE i think she.
Graduated shout out to you either. Way who was one
of the, people Including, ben who was sitting next To
asia and the presser when she decided just to be
on silly goofy time and sit there with the rest
of the. Reporters so that was really. Cool but my
favorite moment has got to be A Melissa smith in
DJ N carrington meeting in the middle of the. Chaos
(21:00):
djna's on a knee, scooter you know WHAT i, mean
but still fly with the blazer. ON i don't know
if people saw it Had smith on one, side three
on the other. Side it was, blingy it was, sparkly
and it was so. Cute it was so cute to
watch her celebrate With Melissa, smith who you know her
first few years in the. League she's been in the
league for a few years, now but it's been ups and.
Downs man and for her to find herself on a
(21:23):
team like The aces in crunch time when they needed
a piece exactly like her and she shows up and
rises to the.
Speaker 4 (21:28):
Occasion it was just really cool to see that payoff
for her and see them get to celebrate together with
their cute little.
Speaker 5 (21:34):
Dog.
Speaker 1 (21:34):
Oh it feels very appropriate that On misha's last show
they would make sure they could find the hoops and
gay ship.
Speaker 4 (21:40):
THAT i had to do.
Speaker 1 (21:42):
It if you are like all in on The Phoenix
mercury because you wanted your two gay moms and now
you're like pivot pivot other gay.
Speaker 8 (21:49):
Couple if there's any queer person who is pushing a queer,
agenda it's.
Speaker 4 (21:53):
Me it is, Me, okay, Yes.
Speaker 1 (21:58):
Alex you pushed any agenda it's on your favorite. Moment you.
Speaker 7 (22:02):
KNOW i love, tea and SO i was obsessed with just.
Watching as soon As Kathy engelbert and her neutral green
suit walked onto the. Court WAS i hoping that she
would be wearing a deck of cards or? Something, yes or.
Speaker 1 (22:21):
A full dealer's.
Speaker 7 (22:22):
Outfit, yeah, YEAH i don't know whatever The lion trainers.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
Wear what if she was like a show girl and she, said, oh,
no it's just About Taylor swift's. Album she's dressed like
a full bacas.
Speaker 7 (22:33):
Showgirl but did you Say asia when people started booing.
Speaker 4 (22:39):
Everybody's face that?
Speaker 8 (22:40):
Video we should definitely link to that video in the
show notes because that VIDEO i count of Jewel i've
Seen Dana.
Speaker 1 (22:46):
Evans, yeah, well and Then Dana evans at the same
time was doing the lebron smiling through it. All can't
believe this is my. Life like right in that, moment
she was talking to someone about it unrelated to the
booing Of kathy and the double. Bird, Yeah, Alex i'm
not too mature to admit. THAT i also was, like
(23:07):
let me, see let me see what's up With. Kathy
she sped her way through that trophy. Announcement she was,
like and congratulations to The. Aces they really had a great.
Season here you, go not wanting to be up.
Speaker 7 (23:19):
There all.
Speaker 1 (23:20):
Right, WELL i mean that's that's it for the twenty
twenty five w. Season any last thoughts to tie.
Speaker 7 (23:26):
For THE wnba, season there's only negotiations to. Happen well
agency maybe an.
Speaker 1 (23:31):
The off, Season alex says are technically the off, season so,
yes plenty more conversations to come And Bias niz to
take care. Of but as far as the play on
the court and the season regular season and, postseason that
part is. Over any last, thoughts any eulogies for twenty
twenty FIVE wnba. Season i'm glad it.
Speaker 4 (23:51):
Happened sad it's. Over hags you know WHAT.
Speaker 1 (23:54):
I, Mean hag. Happened don't cry because it's, Over smile
because it. Happened i'm writing on your. Crack that's what
you would write down the middle of the year. Book.
Anyway my eulogy Is i'll just SAY i appreciate, that
even though it was still toxic this, season it simmered
down a little from last. YEAR i felt like we
(24:15):
were talking more. BALL i appreciate that despite some pretty
serious injuries which were a real bummer to folks Like
Caitlyn clark And Brianna stewart And John Gwell jones And Ifisa.
Collier we still had a dedicated and invested audience who
were showing up for games in person and on. TELEVISION
(24:35):
i appreciate, that you, know The Indiana fever gave their
fans a hell of a run after what could have
been a really disappointing year that was built up between
The All Star game at home Without caitlin to the
end of the season and the postseason Without, caitlin there
was still so much for them to cheer for and
so much for them to be excited about heading into next,
(24:55):
year which is just such a gift From Steph white
and those. Players and just heading into this offseason and the,
NEGOTIATIONS i have to SAY i mentioned in a previous.
SHOW i went On Katie nolan's Podcast casuals and talked
about the negotiations and how the players are looking for
revenue split and all. This And i've been in our
(25:16):
space and the women's sports space for about two years
now and out of the normal regular sports discourse space
quite so. Much and the comments on the clip That
casuals And katie posted To, Instagram we're so. Disheartening it
was such a retread over and over of complete and
(25:37):
utter ignorance to, reality and it just made me reinvigorated
to have these conversations using data and facts and to
help educate people on professional sports revenue versus profit valuations versus.
Reality how much money is reported as. Lost i've said
(25:57):
it in a previous, show just a couple of years.
Ago the, end a third of teams reported a. Loss
that does not mean that THE nba is bad business
and no one wants. In that means sports teams work
differently than other business, models and there are also other
business models that operate in the red for a long
time with a belief that there will be profit in the.
Future the idea that we only talk about women's sports
(26:20):
as a space where they should shut it all down
and they're not deserving of, anything and their whiny, YadA
YadA YadA is such a tell for the misogyny that
still runs. Rampant AND i Message, KATIE i, Said, Man
i'm so sorry that's still your comments. Section great, engagement
hundreds and hundreds of. Comments they all suck great. Engagement
would love for women's sports to have as many dedicated
(26:43):
fans wanting to chat about it all the, time and
also hate it for you because that comment section is
flames and it's all so angry and ignorant and so.
Misogynist So i'm just made me more grateful for our
show and for the space that we get to work
in and also dedicated to changing people's minds in this
offseason spreading facts and.
Speaker 7 (27:04):
Numbers, yeah when people call us out on our, show
it's usually like people with a decent point who listen
to the, argument who come in with their own take and.
Speaker 1 (27:13):
Experience, yeah sometimes it hurts my.
Speaker 7 (27:16):
Feelings a little, bit but, like at LEAST i know
that they're not saying it Because i'm a, woman right.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
Right these comments just ignored literally everything we said in
favor of a narrative that they've elected to believe regardless
of facts and. Reality SO i guess it's in keeping
with life right, now but still disappointing. Me she got
a eulogy for the season in.
Speaker 8 (27:36):
General, uh in, general you, know despite everything that's still
up in the, air all the things that we've already,
mentioned THE cva, negotiations the general vibes Between kathy and the,
players the you, know, officiating the coaching changes and all.
That generally, Speaking i'm still so so so proud to
SAY i was in on the ground floor for a
(27:58):
league like, this you know WHAT i, mean and to
see how much motivation and drive there still is to
make this the basketball utopia that women's basketball aficionados and
fans and casuals alike want it to.
Speaker 4 (28:11):
Be And i'm still.
Speaker 8 (28:14):
Really really hopeful and really REALLY i don't, KNOW i
still have a good feeling in the pit of my
stomach WHEN i look AT i mean men's leagues generally,
speaking BECAUSE i don't want to really watch those, leagues
but also WHEN i look, at you, know kind of
the cultures around, them not just on the, interwebs but
like you, said in the front offices and, THINGS i still.
Speaker 4 (28:34):
WORRY i still wonder.
Speaker 8 (28:35):
About whether or not all those people really care about
the fans really care about the. Product and on the w,
side we're still working on, it you. Know BUT i,
mean The mercury did what they did because now they
have a, new, full new practice, facility all that stuff
to work. With you got so many teams seeing an
influx of, money seeing an influx of resources and you're seeing.
Speaker 4 (28:56):
The product on the court continue to.
Speaker 8 (28:58):
Improve so the proof is really in the pudding with this,
league and you, know we're at a point where there's
a hurdle to jump. Over BUT i feel still really
confident in the, players AND i won't say in the,
leadership but you, know in the minds around the game
that are putting their best.
Speaker 4 (29:15):
Foot forward to help elevate.
Speaker 8 (29:17):
It so still very, proud very proud of this, League
still very happy to be a.
Speaker 4 (29:21):
Fan, Man there's nothing like. It there's just nothing like.
Speaker 7 (29:24):
It as we enter this kind of moment of, transition
leaving this, season entering what is likely to be a
new era of the W i've been thinking back to
kind of the reaction that was had around THE cba
when it was last announced in twenty, twenty and how
it was, celebrated how it was seen as this pivotal
moment in women's, sports like it was something that the
(29:44):
players were proud, of and rightfully, so because it had
groundbreaking protections in, it groundbreaking, bonuses and it set a
new bar for women's, sports and the fact that it
has become so outdated five years is being.
Speaker 1 (30:02):
Fantastic m.
Speaker 7 (30:03):
Hm so one of the THINGS i was thinking about
AS i was watching these, finals AND i know we're
done shitting On Nate, tibbett but Even Becky. Hammond, Right
so the two highest the two highest paid coaches in
THE wnba make in over one million dollars.
Speaker 1 (30:17):
Each, well the.
Speaker 7 (30:19):
Salary cap in the w right now is still one
point five. Million you have a coach out there who
is making two thirds of what the entire rosters make
in and that has got a. Change AND i think
as we think of this next moment in women's, sports
we have seen owners invest right and so they are
able to invest in things that don't have a salary
(30:39):
cap when they want, to so the, facilities the coaches,
salaries stuff like, That and so what will the league
look like if owners are also able to pay players?
More And i'm excited by that AND i hope that
five years down the road again we're, like oh my,
god that twenty twenty FIVE cba.
Speaker 1 (30:57):
Sucks completely, agree but.
Speaker 7 (30:59):
Only in the the perspective of twenty. Thirty so, yeah
that's less of a eulogy as it.
Speaker 3 (31:04):
Is maybe a, priligy a celebration of. Life the PRILIGY
i made up a. WORD i do that sometimes. Confidently.
Speaker 1 (31:15):
UH i completely agree, Though and then it's such a great,
point like if you're investing in every other, part what
will it actually look like when you can invest in
the players who are the whole point and the. Product
speaking of, Eulogies mesh isn't, dying but might as well
be uh dead to us after they. Leave just, Kidding
we're gonna make you come.
Speaker 7 (31:34):
Back, yeah you're gonna do some more big citrus right, Right.
Speaker 8 (31:38):
Yeah you're Gonna you're gonna hit the phone and we're
gonna schedule a.
