Sarah and Alex present their nominees in categories including the “The Megan Rapinoe I F***ing Yeeted My Achilles in the Final Game Award" for the most unbelievable injury and the “Misha Jones Left You Brokenhearted Thanks Obama Award" for the athlete or coach whose departure to another team or league caused you the most distress. It's up to you to decide who were the best, most fashionable, and most socially influential athletes in the world of sports. Plus, an in memoriam for the athletes who nearly killed us this year with their retirement announcements.

the need to know and getting straight to the second
annual Slices. The Good Game with Sarah Spain end of
year awards handed out to the best, most fashionable, most
socially influential athletes in the world of sports, plus an
in memoriam for the athletes who nearly killed us with
their retirement announcements.

It's here the moment you've all been waiting for, the
second Annual Slices. We nominate the best of the best
of twenty twenty five, and you get to decide the winners.

Here's how it works for each category.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
Alex and I have nominated one honoree apiece, and we've
added a nominee we're calling the people Slice. You'll vote
to determine the final winner. We've included a Google form
in the show notes and you can use that to
vote for one of our nomine or you can even
write in a candidate, if you think we missed someone.
You ready to get going, Alex, Let's do it. We're
going to have to carry the weight for the missing niche,

but I think the People's Slice is going to be
representative of that third option. Even though it will be
a a silent option. You will speak for the People's Slice.
First up, drum roll please the Brandy Chastain Sports Bra
Scene Around the World Award for the Sports Moment of
the Year. Last year's winner the US women's national team

winning gold at the Paris Olympics. My vote for this
one is Yukon women's basketball Back on Top. I remember
the nerves that we had throughout the tournament about whether
Paige Beckers could be considered the most talented player Yukon
has had that will never win a title. It feels
sort of like duh at this point, But there were

moments throughout the season where we weren't sure who was
going to win it all, and it was really nice
to see Page and Asy and Gino and all of
that team get to celebrate.

So I'm going Yukon back on Top.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
I am going to pick the Minnesota Frost winning the
PWHL title. For a second year in a row. And
the reason I went with them is one, winning it
out of fourth place again is wild. And then also
all four games of the p WHL finals against Ottawa
went to overtime, including one that went to triple overtime.
And if they give us that much free hockey, I

think we have to reward it with this award.

Fair, very fair.

The people Slice went with the Las Vegas Aces, battling
back from their bad start to win the WNBA title
and speaking of a team that gave us more than
we ever could have asked for, the parade fits the pettiness,
the celebrations after they proved that they were not in
fact down and done.

So. The Aces another good nominee, and.

I think it just speaks to what a strong year
it was for women's sports that the Aces are kind
of number three in this at least for the two
of us.

The next award, the Billy go Award for Athlete of
the Year, spelled of course b I llie in honor
of Billy Jean King, last year's winner for Athlete of
the Year, Simone Biles.

My pick for this year. It feels like a dud
to me.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
Asia Wilson wins her fourth MVP, her third title, her
third Defensive Player of the Year award, her second scoring title,
fastest player in WNBA history to reach the five thousand
point milestone as a Nike Basketball ad set of her
time Athlete of the Year feature, only a magazine can
cover her. This was Asia Wilson's year, not just on

the court, but off the court, with her finally going
public with her relationship with Bam, feasting on all the
social content, her a one shoe release, all the shows
she's just been on. It just feels like a no
brainer to me.

My pick for this award is the Kansas City Currents
Temwatchwinga winning her second straight MVP, Leadingansas City to the
fastest shield in NWSL history. Just an absolutely incredible season.
And if anyone was doubting just how valuable Temwa is,
seeing Kansas City lose as soon as Temwa is on

the sidelines, I think speaks to just how important she
is to that team. And I think just one moment
of joy I want to highlight was that header goal
that she scored a day after making a deal with
Black co In Andofski, Kansas City's coach, and just seeing
her run straight to him and give him this huge
hug just warm my heart in a really fantastic way.

A very deserving nominee as well as is the People's
Slice nominee Paige Beckers, who led Yukon to its first
NCAA title since twenty sixteen, then went straight to the
Dallas Wings, where she earned WNBA Rookie of the Year
honors and then landed a spot in the Team.

USA training camp.

That is a hell of a year for a player,
and I think it's wonderful to see her have this
continued success after success when we had that long stretch
of injury that really kept us from seeing her at
her peak. When you've got Diana Trossi saying that you
believe she might end up being the greatest player in
the history of the WNBA, that's a pretty ringing endorsement
for someone in her first season.

Marie Felipe Pulin, who won the other actual Billy Jean
King Award, the MVP Award in the PWHL Alyssa Lu
who had this incredible comeback and we're excited to see
hopefully in Milan Courtina. But we're gonna stick with those

writings slices. Okay, moving on the next award, the very
unserious Sid Coulson Award for Excellence in Social Media Trolling.

Last year's winner, of course, Sid Coulson, after she posted
herself wearing the Skyline dress that Kathy Engelbert wore with the.

I'm sure we could have nominated Sid once again this year,
but I'm going to change it up and I gotta
go with the stud buds. Their twenty four hour stream
at the All Star Weekend was the stuff of legend.
You got Kathy Engelbert dancing to knock if you buck.
You got Necho Gumkay walking in on the stream telling
them to get their asses to the CBA meeting. You
had athletes maybe potentially accidentally outing themselves at others.

It was wild, is all I have to say.

And I don't know if it was all trolling, but
certainly there were moments throughout the twenty four hour stream
and just in the existence of the stud buds that
you can absolutely consider trolling.

And I have to say, Sarah, I really struggled coming
up with a nominee for this, so much so that
my old RESEARCHERR brain came out and I was going
through text messages searching in my scent message history for

so I wanted to find the things this year that
were really funny. And so I was going back through
my group messages with you and me being like, when

And it was a little bit of a struggle for
me to find something, but I'm ultimately going with Jaden
Shat showing up to Temu camp with a phone background

that was Emma Hayes wearing the pink wig from the
NWSL Championship weekend. It's one of those things where it
would have been really weird if Jaden shaw had made
Emma Hayes her phone background and hadn't told Emma Hayes,
but the fact that she was able to display it

League they surprised college softball players who were drafted to

that they'd be a part of the first season of
the new. League didn't tell them which team yet or
where they were, going but it was sort of this
moment to capitalize on the enthusiasm around college softball and

box BUT i went with debut leagues because we saw
so many and if you, remember on our, show we
started off our year doing one oh one episodes introducing
you to these new leagues that we were going to

see unveiled in twenty twenty. Five and SO i think
the emergence Of Love Volleyball Athletes Unlimited Softball league unrivaled
just the number of successful first timers who launched in
twenty twenty.

YEAR i love. It i'm also going a little bit

at the age of forty, one a breakout? Star? Yes

to see somebody who was, retired not just for a,
year not just for two, years but since twenty nineteen
come back and have such incredible. Success it's just one
of those things where when she initially stepped, away it
was not because she wanted, to it was not because
she was. Ready it was because she was in literal

was going to get backlash for it from the people

ISSUES i, mean, obviously she's been an incredible representative for

atmosphere around, gymnastics for allowing herself and her teammates to have.

so much important, change BUT i don't know if she's
really taken up for issues the same way as she
did in support of trans, inclusion and she kind of

still think she's deserving of this, nomination and hopefully in
the future people will call her in to help her

tearing her acl during WN Being All star weekend when
playing pickup at The Phoenix mercury's new. FACILITY i don't
think we're going to top that one this, year But
i'm going to go with one that was much sadder

in terms of the sports outcomes of, it and that
Was Caitlin clark getting hurt with forty seconds left in
an already secured win of a regular season game and
having to miss THE Wnba All Star game In. Indianapolis of,
course she went on to miss the rest of the,
season and it was just like so disappointing in every,
way but specifically having to miss The All Star game
in the home city of her team where she was going.

year awards handed out to the best, most fashionable, most
socially influential athletes in the world of sports, plus an
in memoriam for the athletes who nearly killed us with
their retirement announcements.

It's here the moment you've all been waiting for, the
second Annual Slices. We nominate the best of the best
of twenty twenty five, and you get to decide the winners.

Alex and I have nominated one honoree apiece, and we've
added a nominee we're calling the people Slice. You'll vote
to determine the final winner. We've included a Google form

First up, drum roll please the Brandy Chastain Sports Bra
Scene Around the World Award for the Sports Moment of
the Year. Last year's winner the US women's national team

winning gold at the Paris Olympics. My vote for this
one is Yukon women's basketball Back on Top. I remember
the nerves that we had throughout the tournament about whether
Paige Beckers could be considered the most talented player Yukon
has had that will never win a title. It feels
sort of like duh at this point, But there were

moments throughout the season where we weren't sure who was
going to win it all, and it was really nice
to see Page and Asy and Gino and all of
that team get to celebrate.

So I'm going Yukon back on Top.

I am going to pick the Minnesota Frost winning the
PWHL title. For a second year in a row. And
the reason I went with them is one, winning it
out of fourth place again is wild. And then also
all four games of the p WHL finals against Ottawa
went to overtime, including one that went to triple overtime.
And if they give us that much free hockey, I

think we have to reward it with this award.

back from their bad start to win the WNBA title
and speaking of a team that gave us more than

I think it just speaks to what a strong year
it was for women's sports that the Aces are kind

The next award, the Billy go Award for Athlete of
the Year, spelled of course b I llie in honor
of Billy Jean King, last year's winner for Athlete of
the Year, Simone Biles.

My pick for this year. It feels like a dud
to me.

Asia Wilson wins her fourth MVP, her third title, her
third Defensive Player of the Year award, her second scoring title,
fastest player in WNBA history to reach the five thousand
point milestone as a Nike Basketball ad set of her
time Athlete of the Year feature, only a magazine can
cover her. This was Asia Wilson's year, not just on

the court, but off the court, with her finally going
public with her relationship with Bam, feasting on all the
social content, her a one shoe release, all the shows
she's just been on. It just feels like a no
brainer to me.

My pick for this award is the Kansas City Currents
Temwatchwinga winning her second straight MVP, Leadingansas City to the
fastest shield in NWSL history. Just an absolutely incredible season.
And if anyone was doubting just how valuable Temwa is,
seeing Kansas City lose as soon as Temwa is on

the sidelines, I think speaks to just how important she
is to that team. And I think just one moment
of joy I want to highlight was that header goal
that she scored a day after making a deal with
Black co In Andofski, Kansas City's coach, and just seeing
her run straight to him and give him this huge
hug just warm my heart in a really fantastic way.

A very deserving nominee as well as is the People's
Slice nominee Paige Beckers, who led Yukon to its first
NCAA title since twenty sixteen, then went straight to the
Dallas Wings, where she earned WNBA Rookie of the Year
honors and then landed a spot in the Team.

USA training camp.

That is a hell of a year for a player,
and I think it's wonderful to see her have this
continued success after success when we had that long stretch
of injury that really kept us from seeing her at
her peak. When you've got Diana Trossi saying that you
believe she might end up being the greatest player in
the history of the WNBA, that's a pretty ringing endorsement
for someone in her first season.

Marie Felipe Pulin, who won the other actual Billy Jean

Last year's winner, of course, Sid Coulson, after she posted

You got Necho Gumkay walking in on the stream telling
them to get their asses to the CBA meeting. You
had athletes maybe potentially accidentally outing themselves at others.

certainly there were moments throughout the twenty four hour stream

Shat showing up to Temu camp with a phone background

would have been really weird if Jaden shaw had made
Emma Hayes her phone background and hadn't told Emma Hayes,
