Speaker 1 (00:01):
Let us pray put on the whole armor of God,
that you may be able to stand against the wiles
of the devil. For our wrestling is not against the
flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers,
against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age,
and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians,
(00:26):
Chapter six, Verses eleven and twelve. Dear Lord, I know
sinister forces are at work in the spiritual realm, but
I also know you are King. There is no force
of darkness stronger than your light. Shine in me to
day as I count myself dead to sin and alive
(00:47):
to you, and shine through me to day as I
bear the fruit only you can produce, and bless others
in Jesus name. Amen, Thank you for praying with me today.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
There's nothing more sinister than fallen angels, but we shouldn't
overestimate their power. Part of why they seem so sinister
is that we can't discern where they are or how
they're working. But we do know their motive destruction, We
know their ultimate demise, and we know they cower at
(02:44):
the name of Jesus.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
His eyes glared at Jesus, and he rammed his fist
against the wall. As Jesus was speaking, a deep laughter
echoed from the back of the synagogue. Everyone's head's turned,
and as the man walked towards the front, his eyes
were bloodshot and his entire body twitched and shook as
he marched. His laugh was disturbing and sent chills down
the spines of the disciples. Ha He yelled as he
(03:12):
pointed towards Jesus, Why have you come to us? Jesus
of Nazareth. The man spat, his neck flexed backwards, and
his face turned red. Jesus knew who this man was. Rather,
he knew who possessed him. Have you come to destroy us?
I know who you are. You are the Holy One,
the Son of God. You are be silent, Jesus rebuked.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Hello. I'm doctor Andrew Farley. With today's episode of the
Heartbeat of Faith podcast. Today we continue highlighting themes, motifs,
and images in the Bible. We look at stories from
the Bible and show how they're all connected, woven like
threads in a tapestry. We've looked deeper into evil, trying
(04:03):
to expose the darkness by shining the light of Jesus.
The week of Halloween is fun for many children around
the world, but it can also be a time of
unabashed celebration of darkness. We can expose that darkness rather
(04:23):
than celebrate it. Today we look at demons. Who are they,
what do they want? And are they as dangerous as
Hollywood portrays? Demons are created beings, fallen angels who rebelled
against God with Lucifer and were cast out of heaven.
(04:45):
They aimed to usurp God and be like him, but
they failed. Now their mission is to drag humanity down
with them and have us share their fate destruction. Demons
don't operate from a place of victory. They've already lost
(05:05):
and will continue to fail. Their goal is to make
sure humanity loses with them. Depending on your background, you
may have mixed feelings about demons. Perhaps you grew up
terrified of them, or maybe you were skeptical about their
very existence. The Bible affirms the existence of demons, but
(05:30):
it also puts their very limited power in perspective.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
And the name of Jesus, come out of this girl,
you unclean spirit. Paul interrupted and yelled. The girl fell
onto the floor, rolling in the dirt. Her fists banged
on the floor and her teeth bit into a tongue.
But then, like a storm that had finally been broken
by the sun, the demon left her. She wept where
she lay on the road. Paul and Silas lifted her
(06:01):
to her feet and brushed the dirt off her clothing.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
She gave a remorseful grin towards the men, and then
ran back to her master's Even though the exacerbating noise
was gone, Paul had a sinking feeling that this was
not over.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
Jesus equipped his disciples with the authority to cast out demons.
After all, they're nothing more than fallen angels, and we
shouldn't overestimate their power. Part of why they seem so
sinister is that we can't discern where they are or
how they're working. But we do know their motive destruction.
(06:42):
We know their ultimate demise, and we know they cower
at the name of Jesus.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
He yelled with intense pain. Sand and blood covered his
naked body. His pupils were white with rage and sadness.
Tears fell down the man's face, and he scowled at Jesus,
Why do you come to me, Jesus, son of the
Most High God. His voice was deep and piercing, but
behind the voice was a man in great pain. He
(07:15):
was possessed by a demon, so it was no longer
him who spoke. He had a storm raging within him.
What is your name, Jesus asked, calmly. I am Legion.
The demon replied, for I am Many. The demon's attempt
to intimidate Jesus failed. Jesus stepped forward, and the demon
retreated backwards in fear. Do not cast me out into
(07:37):
the nothingness, Legion begged. Jesus nodded and gestured to a
herd of pigs grazing on the side of the mountain.
The man's body jolted backwards, and all of the sudden,
painful cries could be heard from the pigs above the mountain.
They ran in circles, eventually tossing themselves off the side
of the mountain into the sea. When the pig herders
saw this, they ran back into the city and gathered
(08:00):
people to come and see.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Satan and his demons aim to drag humanity in the
opposite direction of God's calling. But we believers are sealed
with the holy Spirit, and First John four tells us
greater is he who is in us than he who
is in the world. As believers, we've been transferred from
(08:25):
the domain of darkness into the Kingdom of God. We're
no longer under the power of the enemy, but we've
been set free by the finished work of Christ on
the Cross. Believers can't be possessed by a demon. When
we believe in Jesus, God removes our sinful spirit and
(08:48):
gives us a new one. First Corinthians six seventeen says
he also joins himself to our new spirit. There's simply
no room for Satan to reside within us, as God
won't share us with the enemy. We are a people
of God's possession, and Scripture says the evil one cannot
(09:12):
touch us. Yes, it's important to recognize Satan is real
and demons actively wage war against believers, but the attacks
are external aimed at our minds are thinking. The enemy
uses lies and accusations to distract us from our identity
(09:36):
in Christ. But we can stand firm against these fiery
darts by putting on the armor of God. The armor
of God is not a set of actions we must take,
but rather Jesus Christ himself. Each piece of the armor
represents a different aspect of Jesus. The belt of Truth
(10:00):
represents Jesus as the truth. The breastplate of righteousness represents
Jesus as our righteousness. By putting on the armor of God,
we're reminded of the truth about our righteousness, about our
union with Christ, and about his victory over the enemy.
(10:21):
We can rest in the truth that greater is he
who is in us than he who is in the world.
The name of Jesus makes the darkness tremble. Thank you
