In a world where grace is undeserved but lavishly given by God, we are encouraged to extend that same grace to others. Just as Jesus didn't treat us as we deserved, we are inspired to honor, respect, and love others, regardless of their apparent worthiness. By extending grace to those around us, we can evoke the best in them, just as grace has brought out the best in us.

Even though we were undeserving, God lavished us with an
abundance of grace.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
From His fullness. We all received grace upon grace John
one sixteen.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
God has given us a new heart, a new spirit,
and the empowering presence of His spirit within us. He
has forgiven us all our sins and made us new
at the very core of our being. God's radical grace
toward us inspires us to display his love and his

(02:58):
life to their people. Hello, I'm doctor Andrew Farley with
today's episode of the Heartbeat of Faith podcast. Our goal
is to fully engage with the narratives of the Bible
to comprehend the recurring motifs and symbolism. We aim to
gain insight into the overarching message of scripture, discerning God's intention,

(03:25):
and learning how to live by the Heartbeat of Faith. Today,
we'll take a brief look at grace. What is God's grace,
why is it so powerful? And how does God's grace
empower us to live upright lives. Let's look at a
passage in Ephesians that showcases the grace of God.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
But God, being rich and mercy for his great love
with which he loved us even when we were dead
through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ. By grace,
you have been saved and raised us up with Him
and made us to sit with Him in the heavenly places,

(04:13):
in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come, he
might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness
toward us. In Christ Jesus, for by grace you have
been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves. It
is the gift of God, not of works that no

(04:35):
one would boast, for we are His workmanship, created in
Christ Jesus, for good works which God prepared before that
we would walk in them. Ephesians two one through ten.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Paul describes the salvation we've received from Jesus as a
gift of grace. While mercy is the abe sense of
deserved punishment, grace is so much more. Grace is being
given a gift when we don't deserve it. In Ephesians,
Paul describes the free gift we've been given. He says,

(05:14):
we've been made alive. We've been raised up with Christ
and seated with him. He says we're now God's workmanship.
Paul even says God did all of this for us
because he wanted to put his kindness and grace on
display for us to see now and for eternity. When

(05:38):
we receive a gift we didn't earn or deserve, it
can be pretty disarming. At least it was for Peter
when he received a surprising gift from Jesus.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
After Jesus was finished, he turned back to Peter and Andrew,
why don't we go out into the deep and put
your net out for a catch, Jesus asked. Peter gave
a condescending laugh. Master, we have toiled all night and
have nothing to show for it. He looked at Jesus.
He was earnest and clearly wanted Peter to take the

(06:13):
boat out. Peter shrugged, Fine, that's your word, we will
go out. So Peter and Andrew reluctantly took the boat out.
Peter gathered up the nets and tossed them to the
side of the boat. Then Peter sat, knowing that nothing
would catch. Just as Peter was getting comfortable, he could
hear the sound of stretching rope. The net was tightening

(06:36):
on the side of the boat. Peter leaped to his
feet and looked overboard. His net was completely filled with fish,
so much that the nets seemed like it was about
to break. Peter, Andrew, and Jesus tugged on the nets
and hurled in the largest catch Peter had ever witnessed.
The nets on the other side of the boat were
overflowing as well, so Peter gestured for James and John

(06:58):
to bring out their boats as well. The men rejoiced
with their catch. This bigger catch would provide for their
families for months. All the men danced in place and
shouted for joy, but not Peter. He looked at Jesus
and fell to his face. He was broken. He felt
unworthy of Jesus's gift. Depart from me, Lord, he said,

(07:21):
I am a sinful man. Peter bowed his head before him.
Jesus knelt down and placed his head on Peter's shoulder.
From now on, I will teach you how to be
a fisher of men.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
Peter knew he didn't deserve what Jesus offered. He felt
unworthy and unqualified to be with Jesus. However, Jesus dignified
Peter and used the opportunity to invite him to a
new calling. That's what grace is for you and me

(07:55):
an invitation. It's an invitation to a new life and
a new call. It's an invitation to live in perfect
union with Jesus himself, and living from that union with Christ.
Were invited to walk in the good works God has
prepared for us. Solomon felt inadequate and unprepared when faced

(08:20):
with the weight of royal responsibility that he inherited from
his father David. God chose to give Solomon an abundance
above and beyond what he asked for. It was this
abundance that empowered Solomon to serve God.

Speaker 3 (08:40):
The night was calm and there was no breeze or
sound in all of Israel. The stars shone brightly, and
Solomon was deep asleep in his bed. He shifted slightly
in his bed, experiencing a dream more vivid and real
than any other. Solomon stood before the Lord. He could
not see him, but he was there. What do you

(09:02):
want most, Solomon heard the Lord ask, ask in it
will be given to you. Solomon paused for a moment.
He looked up and said, you showed my father faithful
love since the beginning. He was honest and truly faithful
to you, and you have continued your love for him
by allowing me to sit on this throne. Solomon began

(09:23):
to choke up, trying to capture the right words. Now,
my God, you have made me king, and I am
like a little child stumbling about, But you have placed
me in the midst of your chosen people. They are
a nation so great and so vast that they cannot
be fully counted. Solomon paused again, this time kneeling before

(09:44):
God with his hands spread open wide Please give me
an understanding heart in wisdom to govern your people well.
Allow me to know the true difference between right and wrong,
good and evil, curses and blessings. There is no man
that can govern these people without you by their side.
Solomon finished his request and sat at the feet of

(10:07):
God for a long time. The Lord was very pleased
with Solomon's request. He could have asked for riches, success, power,
or victory over enemies. However, Solomon simply asked for a
discerning and loving heart. God replied to Solomon, saying, because
you have asked for wisdom instead of a long life

(10:28):
for wealth, I will give you all you have asked
for and more. The joy of God was palpable, and
Solomon could feel it welling up in his chest. I
will give you a wise heart, and no other ruler
in history will match your mind. I will also give
you more than you have asked for, with riches, fame,
and prosperity. All that I ask is that you follow

(10:51):
me with your whole heart, as your father did. And
before Solomon could look up at the Lord, he awoke
from his dream. He rose out of his bed and
water worshiped God alongside the governors of Israel.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
Even though we were undeserving, God lavished us with grace
upon grace. He gave each believer a new heart, a
new spirit, and the empowering presence of His spirit. Through
the death and resurrection of Jesus, you and I have
been given a brand new life. It's not just about

(11:26):
patching up our old lives. We've received a completely new
life where the old is gone and the new has come.
Now we're thoroughly equipped, not by our own efforts or abilities,
but by the sheer gift of God's grace. This grace
is nothing short of phenomenal. It means our sins, those past, present,

(11:50):
and even future, have been totally forgiven. Imagine the weight
of your spiritual debt getting wiped entirely clean. That's what
Jesus did for you. We're not bound or shackled by
the stringent demands of the law, for we now live
under the glorious freedom of God's grace. And here's the

(12:14):
cherry on top. It's not just about external changes, it's
about our very identity. We've been made brand new, our
old self laid to rest, and now the life we
live we live with Christ in us. Every single moment,
Every single breath is a testimony to this miracle. So

(12:38):
celebrate this reality, embrace this identity, and let's truly live
in the exhilarating freedom and power that comes from God's unending,
unstoppable grace. Thank you for listening to the Heartbeat of
