Let us pray for God so loved the world that
he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes
in him should not perish but have eternal life. For
God didn't send his son into the world to judge
the world, but that the world should be saved through him.

John Chapter three, verses sixteen through seventeen. Lord, I celebrate
you to day with thanksgiving in my heart for all
you have done for me. Salvation was not cheap, and
peace was not easily one. It took your sacrifice on
the cross. Through you, and you alone, I am redeemed.

You could have left me in darkness, but you made
a way to your light instead. Thank you, Lord, teach
me to day to walk in this new life. You
have given me an eternal life with you that begins

He asked, Who do you say Jesus is? And what
does the Bible declare about his identity? Hello, I'm doctor
Andrew Farley. With today's episode of the Heartbeat of Faith podcast. Together,
we've embarked on a dynamic sea reads through themes of
the Bible, exploring the depths of the Bible through our

dramatic retellings of scripture. The goal is to reveal the
Bible's compelling themes, images and motifs. Every story, letter, prophecy,
and poem is linked to another, forming an epic Biblical universe.
With each episode we tune into the Heartbeat of Faith.

(03:25):
Today will further explore a simple yet profound question, who
is God, with a focus on the second person of
the Trinity, God, the Son. You and I know him
as Jesus Christ, the Son of God and the Savior
of the world. He's given many titles in scripture, Redeemer, Messiah,

(03:47):
Son of David, Bread of Life, Lord, and Lamb of God.
The truth is Jesus is a divisive character. Nowadays, people
from all walks of life have differing opinions on who
who Jesus was and is that was true when Jesus
walked the earth as well sitting by the fire with
his companions Jesus asked, who do men say I am?

(04:11):
They had many different answers, just as people do today,
but Peter found a way to get to the heart
of the matter.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
The fire crackled under the evening stars. Jesus and his
disciples lounged around the warm flames. Jesus was praying silently
to the Lord. The disciples were staring into flickering light.
Jesus lifted his eyes to the disciples. What do people
say that I am? He asked. The disciples shrugged. Some

(04:43):
say that you are John the Baptist that he has
said while poking the fire. Others say you are Elisha.
Some would even say you are one of the prophets
of old that has risen from the dead. James answered,
Jesus looked deep into the flames. But who do you
say that I am? He asked. It was a serious question,

(05:03):
a question that required thought. Peter lifted his gaze to Jesus.
He was not known as a deep thinker. In fact,
Peter was often known for his fast mouth and brash actions. However,
Peter was sure of what he was about to say.
He knew it in his bones. Peter looked deeply through
the flames towards Jesus. You are the Christ, he said,

(05:26):
the son of God.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Peter calls Jesus the Christ. No, Christ is not Jesus's
last name. It's a title for the promised deliverer of
God's people, the prophesied redeemer and restorer of his kingdom.
Christ is the greatly anticipated hero of the Bible. The
entirety of scripture crescendos at the coming of Jesus. Nearly

(05:51):
every Old Testament episode of our biblical sagas alluded to
his coming. One of the earliest foreshadowings in the beginning,
when humanity first turned away from God. When the serpent
deceived Adam and Eve, God cursed him and promised that
a sun would rise to crush the serpent's head.

Speaker 3 (06:15):
God looked to the serpent and said, because of this,
you are cursed to crawl and eat dust for the
rest of your days. One day I will make things right,
and a son of Eve will come, and you will
bruise his heel, but he will crush your head. This
would be the foreshadowing of Jesus coming to put an

(06:37):
end to evil on the cross.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Ever since the fall of mankind in the Garden of Eden.
Our relationship with God has been fractured. A distance was
created between Him and us, a chasm that can't be
bridged through any good deed, ceremony, or heroic effort on
our part. A vicious skull of spiritual darkness and despair

(07:03):
plagued humanity. But we can clearly see in the Bible
that God always planned a way to redeem us. That
plan was sending Jesus to come, live, love, die, and
rise again. Jesus himself is the way we find lasting
freedom from guilt and victory over sin. As we peruse

(07:26):
the Bible, we hear countless stories of triumph over evil.
These were all foreshadowings of the Son of God's triumph
over sin through the Cross and resurrection. Joseph forgave his brothers,
reconciled with them, and saved them from famine. Even though
they had sold him for a handful of silver coin.

Speaker 3 (07:49):
Joseph could tell they needed more explanation, for the last
time they saw him, he was being shipped off into slavery.
Now he stood before them, a governor of the most
powerful nation on earth. I am your brother, Joseph, whom
you sold into slavery. Please do not hate yourselves for

(08:10):
what you have done to me. God sent me here
to preserve the lives of thousands of people, Joseph said.
He explained to them how God had used him to
save the lives of the land and all those who
dwell outside of it. So it was not you who
sent me here.

Speaker 1 (08:28):
But God.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
Samson's sacrifice freed Israel from the oppression of the Philistine.

Speaker 3 (08:35):
Samson screamed as he tore at the pillars. The Philistine's
smiles began to fade, and Samson whispered to himself, let
me die with the Philistines, And in that moment he
bowed with all his strength and pulled the pillars apart.
The entire temple floor fell from the sky, and the
walls toppled on top of all three thousand Philistines Below.

(09:00):
Flames erupted from the center of the temple as stones
crushed the backs of God's enemies. A cloud of smoke
covered the wreckage. Dawn had broke, and the sunrise peaked
above the hills. In the middle of the wreckage, among
the bodies of the Philistines lay Samson's dead body. In

(09:20):
that moment, Samson accomplished more in death than he ever
could during his life. The strongest hero Israel had ever
known experienced more victory and sacrifice than he did selfishness.
The story of courageous self sacrifice would be perfected later
on in another hero. God said his sacrifice would topple

(09:44):
the greatest enemy of them All.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
These moments, and so many more like these, point us
toward the Sun's ultimate victory over sin, death, and darkness.
Soon will be again an entire series on Jesus, exploring
the epic events and images foreshadowing his coming. Jesus is
the savior we were waiting for, and through him we

(10:13):
have access to the third member of the Trinity, the
Holy Spirit, who lives within us. Yes, when we call
upon the name of Jesus to be saved, counting on
his cross for the forgiveness of sins and his resurrection
as the means to eternal life, we are given the
Holy Spirit forever as our comforter, counselor, and guide into

all truth. Thank you for listening to the Heartbeat of
