Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey it's Delilah. Thank you for stopping by. I have
put together some of my favorite radio moments here to
share with you on our daily podcast.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Hey it's Delilah.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
Today we're going to mash up a bunch of great callers,
some from the past, some new, some old, all of
them fabulous. Hi Nancy, Welcome to the Delilah Show. How
can I make your night better?

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Delilah? I was hoping that you could make a dedication
to my husband of thirty years.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
What's your husband's name and what do you want to
tell him?

Speaker 3 (00:42):
His name is Chuck, and I want to tell him
that the last thirty years have been fabulous. I'm sorry
it wasn't forty five, but let's hope for another forty five.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
So why wasn't it forty five? Were you guys together
and then you broke it off or something?

Speaker 3 (00:58):
Chuck and I dated. I was in eighth grade, he
was in tenth grade. We went together for a couple
of years, and then my mother thought he was a
bad influence, so she made me break up with him.
He went his way, I went my way, and we
bumped into each other on an elevator thirty years ago,
and we been together since.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
So were the sparks flying on the elevator? Is a
good thing that it didn't electrocute you?

Speaker 2 (01:22):
Oh my god.

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Yeah. And then that night he was out jogging and
he purposely ran by my house and I was like,
were you want my elevator today?

Speaker 1 (01:31):
And he was like, yeah, you lived in the same
area all that while.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Yes, oh yeah, goodness.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
He got married. I got married, he had baby. I
had a baby. He got divorced. I got divorced.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
Yes, he got on the elevator. You got on the elevator.
He ran by your house, and the rest is history.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
I invited him to coffee and he's never left.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
How was one tall cup of coffee?

Speaker 3 (01:59):
Yes it was, Yes, it was was.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
Oh how sweet? How sweet?

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Yeah? We've gone through a lot and we'll meet through
whatever whatever God hands us. We get through it.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
I will play a wonderful song for you. Thank you
for calling and sharing that sweet love story. Nancy, you
and Jack.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
God bless you so much.

Speaker 3 (02:20):
Delilah, Bye bye Horn, Bye bye.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
Jennifer.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Welcome to the Delilah Show. Who is on your heart tonight?

Speaker 2 (02:34):
My husband Tracy, Tell me about Tracy.

Speaker 4 (02:37):
We've been together fifteen years, married, twelve. This past Saturday
had a lot of ups and downs. We were separated,
going through divorce, and then I got cancer. This happened
about five years ago, and the only person that was
there for me was him, and it brought us back

(02:58):
together and us closer than ever. And now we're doing great.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
And how is your health? You sound very strong.

Speaker 4 (03:07):
I am. I'm in remission. I beat it and I
like to thank him for that, and he helped me
through a lot of it.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
It sounds to me like God took a very sad
and tragic circumstance and turned it into something awesome and
amazing for you too.

Speaker 4 (03:25):
He definitely proved the for a sickness and health.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
And what was can I ask and you don't have
to answer, but what was going on beforehand, before your
diagnosis that you were ready to toss in the towel
and say I'm giving up on us.

Speaker 4 (03:40):
He's older than me. My husband is twenty almost twenty
two years older than me, and we just had a
lot of differences in how we raise our children and
it was just causing a lot of conflict between him
and the kid, me and the kids.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
Things like that, and realizing that he could lose you,
not just through a divorce, but permanent lead.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Did that change his attitude? Oh definitely so.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
Even though he's older, it sounds like he's the one
that grew up when you were diagnosed.

Speaker 4 (04:09):
Yees, he definitely did well.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
I'm sorry you went through that, but I'm glad you
went through that and if that is what God used
to lead you to back to being a family.

Speaker 4 (04:20):
Yes, we have a beautiful thirteen year old daughter together.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
What's your daughter's name, Alison? And does she know that
that her mom is a walking miracle? She does.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Good.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
I'm so happy to celebrate in your happy ending or
your happy beginning.

Speaker 4 (04:40):
Thank you so much, Delilah.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
You have a great night. Thank you. Hi, good evening,
you've called Delilah. Who is this?

Speaker 5 (04:58):
Hi Delilah, This is Jill. How are you?

Speaker 2 (05:00):
I'm good, Joe? How are you? How has your summer
been so far?

Speaker 5 (05:05):
Hanging in I guess I just see the I guess
I just see the song that've hurt me up. I
haven't been too positive lately.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
Well, sometimes when your heart is breaking, it's foolish to
think that you can be positive. God doesn't want us
to fake it and pretend like Oh, we're happy, gappy
when our heart is breaking. What's going on that's stealing
your joy?

Speaker 5 (05:28):
Just uh, a lot of loss going on, death through family,
and just a lot of stuff going on. And I
just kind of feel worthless right now and kind of tough.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
So I get lost, I get death in the family.
But where does the worthless come from?

Speaker 5 (05:47):
There's just people that have left and it doesn't feel.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
Like it matters.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
You know, well, I promise you you're not worthless.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
And if somebody doesn't see your worth, that doesn't make
you any less valuable.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
That makes them blind.

Speaker 5 (06:03):
I hope you're right.

Speaker 2 (06:04):
I know I'm right.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
I have a friend named Wendy who was thrifting with
me one time, and she saw a bracelet that caught
her eye, and she asked to look at it, and
she said, this is kind of like your bracelet. And
I recognized it right away, and I'm like, I want that,
And I bought it and it was I don't know,
twenty thirty bucks, and I got it home. I took

(06:27):
it to my jeweler and it was solid gold and
it was worth about twelve hundred dollars. So I felt
guilty for having snagged it out of Wendy's hands and
gave it back to her because it was hers to
begin with.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
She found it. I didn't, but.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
It was solid gold, but the little junk store was
in thought it was costume jewelry.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
You are solid gold.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
And if somebody doesn't recognize your worth and tries to
convince you that your costume jewelry, please know that your
solid gold and that when the right person or the
right people come into your life, they'll recognize that instantly.

Speaker 4 (07:06):
And I hope so.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
I knew what the bracelet was worth the second I
saw it, because I have two others just like it
that I paid full price for. And when somebody recognizes
your true worth, trust me, they are going to be
turning cartwells to have met you and to get to
be a part of your life. And if somebody chooses

(07:29):
to leave your life, let them go. That just makes
more room for the right people to be in your life.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
Very true.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
I appreciate that you sound like the kind of person
I would love to hang out with. You're the kind
of person that when you see an elderly person on
the bus, you give up your seat without even thinking
about it because you're kind. You're the kind of person
that when a baby is crying on an airplane or whatever,
instead of getting irritated, you you want to go help

(08:01):
the mama and make her life a little better.

Speaker 5 (08:05):
True.

Speaker 1 (08:05):
Yeah, you are a good person to the core of
your being. Please don't ever forget that, will do? Let
me play a song just for you. God, bless you.

Speaker 5 (08:14):
Honey, Thanks you too.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
I so hope you have enjoyed these radio moments as
much as I enjoy bringing them to you. I'll share
more with you each weekday on Hey It's Delilah.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
