Speaker 1 (00:01):
Welcome to another addiction Cooxon's Choice podcast. Very happy to
have the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals as Zach Taylor. Coach.
Have got a big week coming up, You've had a
big had a big couple of weeks. You get your
first glance of the rookies at the rookie mini camp.
What was your what was your take on them? It's
a talented group. You know, they're really focused and about
the right stuff, and those are the types of people
(00:23):
we want to bring into the building. Guys with the
high football IQE, guys that are good locker room fits,
bring a lot of energy to the group, and I
think that's what we have and the rookies. We brought
in a lot of captains, a lot of seniors. Coach
Lucabou was just talking about he was talking about Pratt
and Davis, the two linebackers that were drafted. Those guys
have been around a huddle before, right, Yeah. Yeah, We're
(00:43):
trying to bring in as many guys that have leadership
qualities as possible, and I think that's the right way
to continue to build on this locker room and bring
those types of people into the building. And it's what
we said on draft day. You know, you see those
you know, you see the measurements of these kids and
you say, oh, yeah, they're big. And then you show weapon.
You see a guy like Michael Jordan, right, he's big,
and then rent Nobody's seen anything like Renton around here
(01:06):
and maybe forever. So they certainly fit the deal, that's right.
They looked the part, you know, and so they you know, physically,
they'll be able to walk in and hold their own
and it's just a matter of how quickly can we
get up to speed and mentally and then Monday at all,
it's your first OTA practice. What do you what do
you from a conceptual standpoint? What are you looking to
get accomplished? From the whole team, we just want these
(01:28):
guys to play fast. We have spent the last couple
of weeks of Phase two where we're on the turf
playing eleven on zero, and so guys should be confident
and know where to go when they break the huddle
and get the last scrimmage and know what their assignment is.
Now it's just a matter of not overthinking it when
there's a defense across from you and being able to
play fast and execute the where you wanted done. It
sounds like you got a lot installed talking to Brian
(01:49):
and some of the defensive guys, you know, eighty five
sounds like you're going your way. We got a good
portion of it, and there's always a couple of things
will add at a letter date, but right now we
feel like we got a good core of our offensive
defensive end and we're ready to play. We're all everybody's
eyes on Monday are going to be on that offensive line.
We're all gonna be trying to figure out who's where
(02:09):
who You got any kind of a sneak preview, what
are you gonna line those guys up? No, we got
a good group to choose from, and so um, you know,
there's a couple of guys that are injured and we'll
be out till training camp. So we're really too deep
on the offensive line right now, and so on Monday,
I'm sure they'll be exciting time for everybody. See how
good lines up. As Brian Callahan warned us, though that
might not very well may not be the way you
(02:30):
line up in Seattle on September eight, and whenever it is. Yes,
we have the freedom to do as we choose. For
the next three months here. And so however we decide
give us the best chance to win, well, we'll make
that work. I guess, just uh fast we wind back
the draft day. You did say that five best guys, right,
that's the that's I guess that's the thinking. Ye find
(02:51):
the best, five best that worked together, have get chemistry together,
and can protect the quarterback. The I get it really
got to be exciting you. You got to mesh these veterans.
You're gotta mess these veterans with the with the kids
and Bengals. You know. I've been reading a lot of
stuff about the Bengals, and I keep going on some
you know, radio gigs nationally, you know, and I trying
(03:12):
to remind people that there's a lot in the there's
a lot in the cupboard here. I don't know if
it's has it struck you at all? Where the power
ratings show you guys, And I'm wondering if it surprised you.
Do you care about that stuff? I don't care. That's
what's the beauty of just kind of being hold up
in this offense and not having to worry about that
and knowing that that we got three months to really
get all figured out and for our best products on
the field. But what we're looking for from our rookies
(03:35):
on Monday when they show up fort the veterans is
know what to do. That's the easiest way to make
a good first impression is be able to break a huddle,
no exactly where to go to know your assignment and
then the physical part and you know we'll come to
you eventually. That's why we drafted you. But um, you
know not have to ask all the questions to be
able to get lined up the right way. How do
you do? And is there anything we're gonna see? I mean,
(03:55):
is could we see stuff like a clock out there
or stuff like that, or that's stuff going to be
for training camp or is that stuff you're going to
get right away? Uh, we're working on getting a clock
out there. Yeah, so we'll see what the timeline is
for that. Yeah, um, hopefully since a ruther them later.
I know that's a that's a such a close to
your heart. I know, you know, no one no one
knowing the clock, no one how to run it and
(04:16):
having your players know it. Yeah, yeah, that's ex right, Yeah, yeah,
So any three quick things, let you go for a
check mark, what you want to get done? Uh at
uh he's going into the mandatory mini camp. Three things
you want to get done in the ten OTA's three
three quick like one liners to check the bar okay.
(04:36):
UM want our guys to be on the same page.
And the targeting and the run game because that's how
this whole thing gets started. And so we want guys
really coming off the ball and we'll be aggressive right
off the get go. UM. Nowhere to go with the
run game. UM in the play action game. You know,
we want to be an attacking offense, so our guys
in the perimeter got to be detailed and how to
run the routes. Um. And then we want to see,
(04:56):
you know, our quarterbacks and receivers and the timing of
everything be on the same page. So quarterbacks get the
ball out on time so that the protection can hold up,
and receivers be where they need to be when they're
supposed to be there. And I think we can do
those three things. We'll be in great shape there. Coach,
thanks very much for your time. We'll see out on
the field on Monday.
