Speaker 1 (00:10):
Hey, they're folks.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
It is Wednesday, December thirty first, and Cardi B went
on social media this week put out a video pleading
with her fans to stop being mean and criticizing her
over her relationship with her boyfriend Stefan Diggs. The very
next day, he was charged with felony strangulation and with that,

(00:34):
welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ Robes.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
We need to start here.

Speaker 2 (00:38):
Yes, the headlines that our boyfriend was charged need to
make clear not against her having to do with the
former employee. But this kind of got us talking because
dear lady, this is a bit of a mess right
now for Cardi B. And that there's a Cardi B
side to this, and there's a legal side to this
with her boyfriend, but our hearts kind of went out

(00:59):
to her and hearing her plea online.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
Yeah, and there's a personal side to this too. So
she just had a baby with Stefon Diggs in November,
and part of the criticism came up because they had
to spend Christmas apart, and I say had to, but
Stefon Diggs was posting pictures with some of his other
there I apparently there was at least one other new
born and then not with Cardi B. So yes, the

(01:22):
people were outraged for her. They didn't think she's being
treated right. She's probably overwhelmed by a messy family situation
you've got we call it a messy one.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Yes, it's a family situation, like so many people. It's
a mixed family, it's a blended family. There are kids
over here, the kids, and it's the holidays. We've done
episodes about this period, point blank. But to that point rogues.
This is Cardi B, who was very active on social media,
who gives fire in her albums a lot of times
on her songs. She is used to taking incoming. I

(01:54):
thought it said a lot that she put this video out.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
She seemed extremely vulnerable, extremely frustrated, and hurt and wounded.
You know, it's one thing to deal with all of
those family pressures personally privately, to now have everyone weighing in,
and you know, she felt like they were hating on her.
That she was asking people, you just said it, please
stop being so mean. Why are y'all being so mean?

(02:20):
I wish the best for you? Why are you not
doing the same for me? I need your support and I'll.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
Be honest when I first saw the headlines about her
video and then read excerpts of it, I thought one thing,
And then when I went back and watched it, it
comes off differently. It almost seemed like just I mean,
she's laying on a couch, got a head wrap on,
and it looks like she just decided something in the
moment got her and she just hit record, and like damn, y'all.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
It came off a little differently.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
Yeah, she wasn't all dolled up and doing some big
speech about you know, online hate. No, she was real
in her home, comfortable and kind of not. It was
venting in one way, but it was more you felt
sorry for her, Yes, you your heart went out to her.
You weren't. It didn't seem like she was as angry

(03:08):
as she was hurt.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Yes, And we're used to her being angry and her word,
I'm saying, not a mad person, but she is not.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
She's tough.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
She's a tough cookie. She's a tough cookie. So this
comes out one day. I think you pointed the video
out to me first, so I didn't know what was coming.
Maybe she did, maybe she didn't. But the very next day,
her boyfriend Stefan Digs, superstar pro Bowl level receiver for
the now surging and playoff bound New England Patriots. Word
now got it. Yesterday happened in court that he is

(03:38):
being charged with felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery.
The accusation is that he slapped and choked someone who
used to work for him, his former chef, And this
was all over a financial dispute. And we go through
and I say, Stefan Diggs outside of the football world,
football fan where I don't know how many people are

(04:00):
familiar with him, but certainly more God familiar.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
When he started dating her, of.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
Course I didn't obviously not shocking. I did not know
who he was. And yes, so his name became much bigger,
his fame grew much higher because of Cardi b period.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
No question, wasn't it the And it might have been
a really big deal. Remember what was it on CBS
with Gail She announced at the same time what a
NEWB album and she was bregant. Yes, so this was
a big deal. She's been putting this relationship out there
in a major way.

Speaker 3 (04:34):
Yes, And she talked about how she was having the
baby right before the holidays and then going on tour
in February, so she was hitting the ground running. So
she's a busy I mean successful doing well. It seems
like yay, she's just had a baby, she's got her
her boyfriend, her man, she's got a new tour starting,
and yet you see her on the couch pleading with

(04:55):
the public.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
All right, So again that was the day before we
ended up getting word now yesterday about this arrest. So
we need to I say, arrest that he is not
in custody on his attorney actually made an appearance for him.
But it did happen in court yesterday. But Robes, according
to the court documents, the incident, and we should say
here we are not talking about a civil lawsuit. We

(05:18):
are not talking about somebody at this point who has
sued him for millions of dollars for an incident. We're
not talking about someone who has even sued to get
her money back in this financial dispute. No, she has
gone to police and said this guy assaulted me and
he is now facing charges. So Robes just goes back
to the incident apparently happened December second, according to court documents.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
Quick, yeah, no, that's right, and I was saying, just
to have Cardi B's video put out when it was
she went to police on the sixteenth, So you would
think that Cardi B had to be aware, was aware
of what was coming, and maybe this was a way
to soften the news, saying, hey, I already feel stressed
about what y'all are saying about my relationship. And she
knew once this news came out, it was going to

(06:00):
reach a fever pitch.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
All right.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
So the incident again apparently on December second, believe it
happened at Digg's home. This was a personal chef who
was working for him, and then there was a dispute
over whether she should be paid monthly or paid weekly.
We won't get into all of that, but this chef
does have text message exchanges that she has handed over
police that shows there was a heated dispute at least
going on via text. Now that text a few robes

(06:23):
apparently rolls over into a face to face difute when
he apparently it confronts her in the bedroom, her bedroom
at his home. I BELIEVELD have that right where she
had things. It gets into a back and forth and
said she got angry excuse me, he got angry and
next thing you know, he's got in a choke hold,
is what she described, at least from.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
This police report.

Speaker 3 (06:44):
Yeah, she said that she felt like she was having
trouble breathing. She said that she felt like she could
have blacked out. She got to that point where she
felt like that was possible. But she said that she
doesn't have any pictures of any injuries sustained during that altercation.
But police obviously listened to her, saw the text messages
and made the decision. And she said she was hesitant

(07:06):
to come forward. The reason why she waited is because
of who Stefan Diggs was. She knew this was going
to be a major, massive headline if she would forward
with her complaint.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
So, I mean, that's a series. This is a serious incident.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
Again, it's felony strangulation that he's being charged with. She
said he slapped her in that room.

Speaker 1 (07:26):
Anytime he tried.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
Or she tried to get away from him, he squeezed
and choked her a little harder. By the time the
incident finally did stop, said he threw her on the
bed and said something along the lines of yeah, I
thought so. And that's the incident and now here we are.
Now there is something about a non disclosure. I think
you might have seen this as well, Robes. That came

(07:48):
later she was asked to sign a non disclosure by
his assistant.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
She refused to do that.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
Say hey, you sign a non disclosure and he'll pay
you your money. She refused, And now here we are,
So we are. We've seen a lot of stories and
accusations and stuff that goes to some credibility.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
It absolutely does, because if it was about getting money
or about getting paid and perhaps maybe even getting a
little extra, we don't know if that was on the
table for pain and suffering or anything she incurred during
that altercation that she claims happened. Yeah, the fact that
she said no, thanks, didn't sign the NDA, didn't take
the money, and instead went to police. She didn't file

(08:27):
a civil lawsuit, she didn't go to an attorney, She
went to a police station. That does speak to credibility.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
She also Robes, and this will I haven't seen her
make as many headlines yet, but the possibility that Cardi
b is now in the middle of this story in
that the woman claims in her police report that she
was contacted by a woman, I think a text message
and a voicemail essentially saying don't make such a big

(08:53):
deal out of this. In the report at least it
says she believes it was the girlfriend of Stefan Diggs,
who of course is Cardi B, but didn't name Cardi
B in the report.

Speaker 3 (09:05):
Yes, I mean, so that makes a lot of sense.
And so also now hearing what we heard from Cardi
B that level she knew what was coming. This is
a huge story. This is a massive stain.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
And if it's an incident now where she was involved
in trying to get a woman who was assaulted from
going and seeking police help, is that that is the
storyline correct there? And it's going to be. But again
we don't know. This is one person making an accusation.
You mentioned the Patriots robes and why the woman says

(09:40):
she didn't want to come forward because she knew of
the affiliation with the Patriots. And look, the Patriots right
now are having that hell of a year. The Patriots
right now have secured a playoff spot. The Patriots right
now haven't been in the playoffs since twenty twenty one,
and they haven't had a receiver do as well as
Stefan Diggs since I think twenty nineteen or so. This
is a big deal for this organization and robes right now,
they're standing by their guy.

Speaker 3 (09:59):
Yes they are. They say they are aware of the accusations.
Obviously everybody is right now, but their intimation was they
were aware of them before we all were aware of them.
And they made a very strong statement saying Stefan has
informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegation. Period.
We support Stefan period.

Speaker 1 (10:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (10:18):
I mean they listened to their guy. He is their
family member. He's an important one. Now, if the third
stream punter was going through this and came into the office,
I don't know if the statement would be the same.

Speaker 3 (10:29):
Yes, and if the Patriots were doing as well. I
mean they need Steffan Diggs. I mean you can tell
me yes, okay in a way that yes, I we
fully understand.

Speaker 2 (10:37):
He to their success and a very young quarterback they have.
He is absolutely critical to what they're trying to do,
which is win a Super Bowl for the first time
since they had a guy named Brady as their quarterback.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
This is a big deal.

Speaker 2 (10:50):
So his response as well, we should certainly mention that
Diggs did have a response from his lawyer, and ah,
we read a lot of statements, and I don't want
to get in there and.

Speaker 1 (11:02):
Completely break it down. But he's saying this did not happen.

Speaker 3 (11:06):
Yes, should we read the whole statement, Yes, this is
what his lawyer put out. Stefon Diggs categorically denies these allegations.
They are unsubstantiated, uncorroborated, and were never investigated because they
did not occur. The timing and motivation for making the
allegation is crystal clear. They are the direct result of
an employer employee financial dispute that was not resolved to

(11:28):
the employee's satisfaction. Stefan looks forward to establishing establishing the
truth in a court of law.

Speaker 2 (11:35):
Which he has every right to do. And this is
nothing but an allegation at this point. But he is
saying this whole incident didn't happen. This woman has filed
a police report. The motivation would then have to simply
be I just want to get them, I just want
to make him look bad.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
I just want it.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
I made this whole lie up because there's nothing now
for this chef that is beneficial.

Speaker 1 (11:55):
Is it just going to hurt her help her future business.

Speaker 3 (11:58):
Uh, it's not going to help her future business. It's
not going to help her with any sort of contract
she might get now, because if it looks as if
she's somebody who goes and reacts and retaliates by going
to the police, you're never going to be hired as
a personal chef again. You're never going to be allowed
into someone's home again.

Speaker 1 (12:15):
She knows that.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
Wow, I hadn't thought about that.

Speaker 1 (12:17):
She knows doing this.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
So if I am going to lose so much of
my business, shouldn't I go after him financially to secure something?
And she hasn't, So she had to be that mad
at him in this dispute to just make up this
lie and go to police. Or maybe there is something
to it. Again, we've seen plenty of these, just how
it reads, but there is. He is innocent until proven guilty,

(12:40):
and right now, that's what he is. Stay here, folks,
we told you about that Cardi b video. We'll tell
you what she said in that video and why this
woman is more stressed maybe than most mothers you'll run
into today.

Speaker 1 (12:54):
Stay here, all right, folks.

Speaker 2 (13:05):
We'll continue here on Amy and TJ talking about just
what was a I guess that is tough robes.

Speaker 1 (13:11):
Holliay's can be tough for.

Speaker 2 (13:13):
A lot of reasons. But Cardi B has a new
relationship with a new guy. For the most part, she
has a new baby, she has a new album, and
she has a new tour that's about to start in February.
And when she does, she's got to leave four babies
at the house.

Speaker 3 (13:26):
Yeah, I was going to say, and three kids from
a marriage that she's in the.

Speaker 1 (13:30):
Middle of the divorce. Yes, and the album has everything
to do with that guy.

Speaker 3 (13:35):
Yes, So imagine you're in the middle of a divorce,
a very public divorce. You have three kids. By the way,
her youngest with him is fifteen months, so she has
what a two month old and a fifteen month old?
She basically has Irish twins, divorcing the first dad and
now going through some public messiness with her new guy
and again about to start a tour. I cannot I

(13:57):
think I'm stressed out. Just hearing that makes me feel
like I can't breath.

Speaker 1 (14:02):
Even take the public part of it out of it.

Speaker 2 (14:04):
Any woman who has back to back babies stressed as hell.
Add in the job, the career, the stress, the holidays,
robes the holiday, getting all the kids, the right presence,
getting the family. I mean the girl right now is
going through it.

Speaker 3 (14:21):
Yeah, and neither dad there for Christmas. Yeah, like that's
that's hard, and it's really hard.

Speaker 1 (14:26):
They explained, And again we talked about you.

Speaker 2 (14:28):
The one that reminded me that so much of it
had to do with folks saw that she was not
with her current boyfriend for Christmas and he was posting
videos or whatever with his other kids and the family
that didn't involve her, and people took issue with it.

Speaker 3 (14:42):
Correct, Yes, so she didn't way, she note. And obviously
they've forked this out. Obviously you talk about, hey, babe,
I've got other kids. I got to figure it out.
A lot of us who are in divorces know that
you have to take your relationship sometimes has to take
a back seat to kids being loved and feeling loved
at Christmas time, around the holidays. That is part of
what we do.

Speaker 2 (15:02):
And also sometimes your kids. Sometimes the parent doesn't want
you around their child right like his other kids. The
moms might not want card to be anywhere close to
those kids. Like those are just family dynamics. I'm not
a surprise to a lot of people listening to us
with mixed family, we can't.

Speaker 3 (15:20):
We can't possibly know what's going on. But clearly they
had it worked out. She made it very clear that
they had no issue with it. But yeah, I think
people were pointing out the fact that it seemed as
though he had one or maybe even two children around
the same time with other women that Cardi b gave
birth to their son, and so they're in a way
they're trying to protect her and say, hey, get rid
of him. But when you're in the middle of a

(15:41):
relationship with somebody you love and you understand the dynamics,
I'm sure she was aware there were other pregnant women.
I'm sure she knew this was all happening, and she's
at peace with it, and they've worked it out between them,
and it is between them.

Speaker 2 (15:54):
Like you said, they try to protect her, like I
think you just said, But clearly, based on some the
stuff she said in her video, that's not how she
took it.

Speaker 3 (16:02):
No, it felt took a lot, and I'm sure some
of it was not was not kind, was very cruel
in me, and like, what are you doing? You know
you're a moron? Why are you with this person.

Speaker 2 (16:13):
That kind of thing again, I'll send from the outside,
trying to judge somebody else's relationship is if we have
any idea, what the hell is really going on? But
she started her video, look she was She's one of
my favorite artists. I'd spent a little time with her
in Atlanta during covering the super Bowl there, like, I
got a lot of time with her, an hour and
a half kind of just that wasn't the interview, just kicking,
just sitting back in this big conference room, and I

(16:33):
got to see her work, and I was so jealous
of her because she got to be her authentic self.
Like I wish I could open my mouth and say
whatever the hell I want and be me.

Speaker 3 (16:42):
I hadn't thought about that, are thought about that?

Speaker 2 (16:45):
And even though you do, might agree, or I find
an objectionable or might even be profane what comes out.
I always looked at her and admired damn to just
be you and it's working. I always admire that. So
when I see her in this video, this looks like her,
but in a different way, in different tone. If you
haven't heard her album, the latest album, it's about her

(17:06):
heartache and the pain and going through divorce and wanting
to be with a guy and the offset her husband
is a high profile, very successful rapper, So that album
even was kind of This was the tone I felt
in this video is the tone I heard in some
of what she was rapping.

Speaker 3 (17:24):
Pain.

Speaker 1 (17:25):
It's pain, man, it is. It is hard.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
All we see is the final result that show she's
about to put on. Yeah, you'll go buy the tick
and go, Wow, the show is great. This is a
woman with four kids, two of them under the age
of two, who's rehearsing twelve hours a day.

Speaker 3 (17:43):
Yeah, would she say put on the show rehearsing ten
to twelve hours starting January one? Like this was her time.
The holidays were her time to relax, to chill with
her four kids. And yeah, so you can understand how
this video got made. It was out of desperation in pain.

Speaker 2 (18:00):
I will give you some of the excerpts that jumped
out of her us. We'll leave out some of the
Cardi B specific profanity. But she's started with this, y'all
need to calm down. Y'all been dragging me for three
or four days, and y'all been a little too mean
to come from her to say somebody is saying that's
because she says some crazy stuff online. She's been in

(18:21):
online beefs before and says some while so.

Speaker 3 (18:23):
She can take it, she can give it, she's done. So.
Then she says, I can't change shit. I can't go
back in time. I already had a baby. Y'all want
me to put my baby back in my pee. Y'all
want me to leave my man and come f yours.
I have so much work to do that it's stressing
me out. I'm gonna be away from my babies, away

(18:45):
from my personal life. I'm already super stressed out. I
need my support system. I need my fans to support me.
Don't be dragging me. It's enough, all right, it's enough.
It's a rare type of plea. You like that she's
begging y'all please just leave me alone. Yeah, and then
she says, leave me alone, Damn, y'all scare me.

Speaker 2 (19:06):
I just oh man, it's a mess, and your heart
goes and look, we always look at all these are
rich and famous people.

Speaker 1 (19:13):
They can do. I just, man, there's something in this
that is very.

Speaker 2 (19:16):
Real, and maybe for us it hits home when it
comes to public scrutiny. People not understanding your life, not
understanding your relationship, and just nothing but incoming. And it is.
But also we relate to blended families. Yeah, oh yeah, yeah,
he's got to be here, got to be there. I understand.

(19:37):
I don't fault anybody for any of this. And sometimes
life family, it's just messy. But they're going through a
public life.

Speaker 3 (19:43):
Yeah, everyone had stress for the holidays, but Cardi B
has been taking it like nobody like I can, I
actually like and we do have some experience with this.
But man, that's a whole other level.

Speaker 2 (19:56):
And again, at the core of all this right now
still is potentially a victim out there who was now
going to police because she quite possibly was abused, was assaulted,
Yes by this guy. That is real and that is
a real victim. But it's always we always do these
stories rope. It's not just one side or the other.
There are victims all around often in these stories.

Speaker 3 (20:19):
Yes, And it doesn't help when people weigh in and
start pointing the finger at folks and saying things that
you can't unhear, because we do a lot of a
lot of folks they read what you write and they
take it to heart and it affects them. So yeah,
it's just another reminder to be kind, all right with that, everyone,
thank you so much for listening to us. I'm Amy

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
