Speaker 1 (00:01):
Morning Run with Amy and TJ and iHeartRadio Podcast. Good
morning everyone, and welcome to Morning Run. It's Monday, May
twenty sixth. I'm Amy Robots.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
And I'm TJ Holmes. And according to Robes here, you
are in one of two categories today. You are either
very excited you're not working today or you're piss that
you're headed to work today.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Correct. I've been both on many occasions.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Oh that is true. But hey, whichever category you are in,
we're glad you're choosing to take a little bit of
a run with us today and coming up on today's run. Yes,
it's Memorial Day. But if somebody asks you right now
tell me the history of Memorial Day, could you, well,
truth be told, we couldn't, But we are going to
introduce you to or explain to you, maybe a tradition

(00:48):
that goes back one hundred years that maybe we all
need to be brushing up on just a bit.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
Yeah, I learned something. We hope you will too. Also
on the Run this morning, a disturbing story out of
Manhattan that sounds more like a horror movie than an
actual police report. Accusations of kidnapping and torture in a
luxury Soho apartment. Plus President Trump makes a big splash
and his commencement addressed to West Point graduates over the weekend,

(01:13):
telling cadets, among many other things, to avoid getting trophy wives.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
There was more to that one as well, but also
coming over with the run this morning, Team USA wins
a championship it hasn't won in ninety two years. Also
a first at the ND five hundred on Sunday, A
question for the winning driver whole milk or two percent?

Speaker 1 (01:37):
Yeah, I needed some more explanation on that one. Will
help you out with that. Plus a history making box
office weekend with the Mouse cine Maverick, Leelo and Stitch
and Mission Impossible Crush a twelve year box office record.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Also this morning, just in time for the unofficial start
to the summer, the annual list of the best beaches
in the United States. If I gave you a guess
of the give you three guesses of what state they
would be in, you would probably be wrong.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Still I was, but I was a little surprised by
this list. But we will share it with you coming up.
But we have to begin our morning run with the
day itself. Yes, it is Memorial Day and I even
asked you, TJ, can we say happy Memorial Day? Or
is that not okay? We landed on that. It's probably
not okay.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
It doesn't feel right to say that, Yes, you honor
folks on this day, but to say happy is I.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Don't know, it's weird, it feels strong, it feels strange.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
There it is, that's the one. So, yes, today we
honor the men and women who have sacrificed who have
served this country in uniform. But it's also become a
day for family, friends, neighbors to get together enjoy a
little time off together. It's also considered the unofficial start
of summer, and there are some barbecues out there, get
togethers all over the country. We have been in the

(02:59):
South often the weather hasn't been cooperating for a lot
of outdoor activities. But yes, that's what the holiday has
become about.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
Right. So it's been a day of course of honoring
but also celebrating. And that's why I ask can you
say happy Memorial Day? Because there is a lot of
celebration that goes on. But we wanted to share with
you how the US Department of Veteran Affairs describes this day.
And how the tradition of Memorial Day began. Memorial Day is,
of course, yes, a federal holiday held on the last

(03:26):
Monday in May to mourn and honor its deceased service
men and women. But it wasn't always called that, and
it wasn't always on a Monday.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Decoration Day is what it was originally called. It started
back in eighteen sixty eight, following the Civil War, when
communities would decorate soldiers graves with flowers in the springtime.
More than one hundred years, May thirtieth was designated as
decoration Day to ensure availability of the choicest flowers of

(03:57):
springtime all over the country.

Speaker 1 (03:59):
That makes a lot of sense, yeah, But eventually, beginning
in nineteen seventy one, Memorial Day was called that and
moved from May thirtieth to the last Monday in May.
And I liked this. I didn't realize, but this is
what they describe. It calls on all Americans to quote
observed Memorial Day by praying according to their individual religious

(04:20):
faith for permanent peace. That's cool. I didn't realize that
that is part of what Memorial Day is and what
it asks of US citizens to do, not just to
honor those who have fallen, but to also pray for peace.
I didn't realize.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
That, and everybody can be on board with that, so
I learned a lot.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
I thought it was really cool.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
But that's Memorial Day. Take that with you today, folks,
and school somebody if you will. But let's continue on
this morning's run in Manhattan, where police say a crypto
entrepreneur allegedly tortured an Italian tourist for more than two
weeks inside his luxure Soho apartment. That sentence alone is

(05:04):
mind bottling, But we're talking about thirty seven year old
John Waltz being held without bail on charges of kidnapping, assault,
and unlawful imprisonment.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
Yeah, it's a real life story that is truly stranger
than fiction. And as Macab is any horror movie we've
ever seen, the details of what this tourist says happened
to him are hard to take him. The alleged victim
is twenty eight years old, and by the way, his
name is being withheld from the public. This man told
police he went to the home of the suspects and

(05:34):
was then tortured by him and another person who has
not yet been apprehended.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
Oh my goodness, Okay, the story continues here. The man
says the to beat him, drugged him, used electric shock,
and hanged him off allege he somehow managed to escape
ran to a traffic enforcement officer for help. Police showed
up to this eight bedroom luxury Soho apartment where he
said he was being held. They say they found multiple

(06:02):
polaroid pictures of the alleged victim being tied up and tortured. Yes,
as you said off the top, this is a movie
we've seen somewhere.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
This is insane. So the alleged victim told police this
all happened because he refused to give them his bitcoin password.
Police say they also found several torture devices inside the apartment,
including a saw, chicken wire, and night vision goggles, as
well as a gun and ammunition. I mean, this is
a crazy story, and this man waltz. He was ordered

(06:32):
to surrender his passport because prosecutor said, this guy has
the means to flee, including a private jet and a helicopter.
So he had obviously an eight bedroom apartment and Soho.
I can't even imagine what that price tag was, So
that's why he is behind bars. His bail was too
high for him to get out. So yeah, he's not
getting out anytime soon. But the details of this story

(06:54):
are truly surreal.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Eight bedroom apartment you had.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
Me, Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
All right, let's continue on our run here on this
what is this?

Speaker 1 (07:04):
This is a Monday morning, This is Momorial Day. It
doesn't feel like a Monday because it's a holiday. I
get it.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
But we can see you on our run on this
Monday Memorial Day. Next leg takes us to West's Point,
where President Trump gave the commencement address to the US
Military Academy over the weekend. In a headline making speech. Now,
we are going to throughout this story. Now directly quote him.
We don't need to paraphrase. We don't mean to in
anyway try to explain his words. They speak for themselves,

(07:33):
because this is the stuff he actually told this graduating
class of cadets.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
Yep. So first up, he advised graduates to avoid getting
a trophy wife. Trump was referring to a real estate
developer of his telling this to cadets. He ended up
getting a divorce, found a new wife. Could you say
trophy wife. I guess we can say trophy wife, but
that doesn't work out too well. I must tell you,
for a lot of trophy wives, it just doesn't work.

Speaker 2 (08:01):
Okay. But is that good advice?

Speaker 1 (08:04):
Okay? Is it relevant? Advice is maybe the more important question.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
But maybe he's looking out at a group of individuals women,
men and women. But he's in that moment talking to
the men, assuming they're going to be really successful in
some way, form or fashion. And there he was good.
Could it be good advice?

Speaker 1 (08:24):
I don't think that's what I'd want to hear in
my commencement address, just saying for myself or for my child.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
I'm trying here. Trump also talked about his administration's end
of diversity, equity and inclusion programs, telling the graduating cadets
and again, folks, everything is about to come out of
my mouth is a direct quote from the President of
the United States. So and I quote. The job of
the US Armed Forces is not to host drag shows

(08:51):
to transform foreign cultures, but to spread democracy to everybody
around the world. At the point of a gun. The
military's job is to dominate any foe and annihilate any
threat to America, anywhere, anytime, in any place. End quote.

Speaker 1 (09:07):
He does not mince his words. Trump went on to say, quote,
there will be no more critical race theory or transgender
for everybody forced onto our brave men and women in uniform,
or anybody else for that matter, in this country. End quote.
He also said he was investigated more than the great
late Is it ALFONSEA Capone? I was like al Capone Alfonso?

(09:28):
So yes, he was investigated more than the great late
Alfonso Capone. Trump wore his Make America Great Again hat
throughout the speech and took credit for making the military
better than ever before. And we should point out he
did draw a lot of applause from guests at times,
especially when he discussed the issue of transgender athletes playing

(09:49):
in female sports and hiring on merit over diversity. So
we got a lot of applause for some of those comments.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
Did he really say late great?

Speaker 1 (09:56):
He said great? Late? Yes, he said great?

Speaker 2 (09:58):
Was in there, great alfans Capam?

Speaker 1 (10:01):
Yes he said great, he said great.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
The great late. I mean he among gangsters. I guess
he could be great. Yes, he could be a great
bad guy. So maybe he was saying that.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
He was a great bad guy. I guess.

Speaker 2 (10:11):
All right, folks, stay with us on this Monday Memorial Day, run.
When we continue. They have been doing the Indianapolis five
hundred for over one hundred years, and yesterday something happened
there that's never happened before. Also, coming up, you didn't
know something was going on, but Team USA did something

(10:31):
that hasn't done in ninety two years. You weren't even
paying attention. And finally, oh, the big Memorial Day box office.
The numbers are in and an alien is ruling the
box office. Let's continue on this Monday Memorial Day run

(10:56):
and the next leg takes us to Indianapolis, where they
had the Indy five hundred, the one hundred and ninth
Indy five hundred. They've run this race robes more than
one hundred years, but yesterday experienced that first when Alex
Poalow became the first Spaniard to ever win the race.

Speaker 1 (11:15):
Polo has been the most dominant driver in the sport
the past several years, winning three IndyCar season titles, but
he never actually won the Indianapolis five hundred until yesterday
and him winning and his crew coming on to it,
it was really you. I saw you laughing and smiling.
I said, what are you looking at? And you showed
me and it was such a cool moment to see

(11:36):
that excitement happened with his victory.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
I didn't know you weren't aware of the tradition indy
five hundred. The winner goes to the winner circle and
they drink milk. They always drink milk.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
And I was like, the race, yes, And you said,
how did you not know that? Then you showed me
all the different images of all the people winning and
drinking milk, And now I have been schooled. Okay, And
what about.

Speaker 2 (12:00):
The milk tradition goes back to nineteen thirty six. A
guy just happened to be photographed. He won the race,
he was exhausted, somebody handled the milk. It was his
drink of choice. But it wasn't until some years later
some milk executives smart found that picture and then he
insisted that every winner from then on be giving milk afterwards.
So now it's a thing. Every single driver, all thirty

(12:23):
three were asked ahead of time, what is your preference
whole milk or two percent? Now, what would you guess
most milk drinkers would choose whole milk? Really? Wow?

Speaker 1 (12:33):
Yeah? Right? Absolutely?

Speaker 2 (12:35):
Most deal if they absolutely Most of them were talking
seventy percent, choose whole milk, and what if you don't.

Speaker 1 (12:41):
Like milk, you go with it. You just want to
suck it off.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
Oh they've been doing this one hundred years and you're.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
Like nah, And I like me, can I get half
in half? Oh? Maybe like cream full cream? I prefer that.

Speaker 2 (12:53):
See, this is what I don't like to watch.

Speaker 1 (12:55):
Stories with you. Oh, I always pay attention to things
that other than win or anything like that. All right,
next up on our run, speaking of sports, maybe you
didn't even realize me that the World Hockey Championships have
even been going on in Stockholm, Sweden. Yes, I did
not know that. What is that the World Hockey Championships. Okay,

(13:17):
it's in an annual international hockey tournament among hockey nations.

Speaker 2 (13:21):
It's a big deal, okay, right, Every single year they
have this, the World Championship. So the United States, however,
has not won this thing since nineteen thirty three. Until yesterday,
the US defeated Switzerland one oh in overtime to win
its first World Championship in ninety two years. In fact, Robes,

(13:41):
they haven't even been in the finals since nineteen thirty four.
Just want to give them a moment and give them
some love. I know a lot of us were not
keeping an eye on it, and even me as a
sports guy, I wasn't keeping a close eye on what
was going on. But congratulations to that team we're doing. Look,
we're not a hockey nation when you start talking about
the can and the Rushes and the Swedens and the

(14:02):
Finlands and so on and so forth.

Speaker 1 (14:04):
But this was great for the countries that have a
lot more ice than we do. That's what I feel
like you just named. But yes, cold places, congratulations to
Team USA. All right, Next up on the run, we're
gonna head to the movies. History has been made this weekend.
It is officially the biggest Memorial Day weekend in box
office history, you know, and I'm.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
Happy to hear that. After all they've talked about the industry.
It's going through in the movie theaters. This is great
to see. But yes, Disney's remake of Lelo and Stitch
blew away. All expectations took in what is it, one
hundred and eighty three million dollars domestically, Yes, that is wild,

(14:44):
just domestically, and three hundred and forty one million dollars worldwide.
It's right behind leelew and Stitch. Of course you've been
seeing some issue Impossible you can miss. It has been
promoted like crazy, but it made seventy seven million dollars
in the US and one hundred nine million dollars world wide.

Speaker 1 (15:01):
Yeah, so those two films combined their massive success makes
this weekend the biggest Memorial Day weekend of all time.
Final Destination, Bloodlines, we have got to see That was third,
Thunderbolts fourth, and Sinners. So those are the top five
out this weekend. Centers is still in the top five.
That's incredible. The previous biggest Memorial Day weekend, by the way,

(15:22):
was all the way back in twenty thirteen with Fast
and Furious six and they Hangover Part three. It was
like a big sequel weekend. But yeah, that was the
last time. That was the number they beat, and they
beat it handily, by the way.

Speaker 2 (15:36):
That is Leilo and Stitch. I didn't expect. I thought
we're gonna do find it.

Speaker 1 (15:40):
No one did.

Speaker 2 (15:41):
Disney was smarter, they say. I was surprised to see
so much of their merchandise that has been sold over
the past several years. They recognize Leland and Stitch merchandise
has been selling like crazy.

Speaker 1 (15:53):
So they figure there's a market for it, and they.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
Put this out there and they did a good job
of it, and sure enough boom. All right, folks, Well
as you continue on your Memorial Day Monday.

Speaker 1 (16:04):
Wait wait, yeah, you might be thinking about go to
the beach. This is the unofficial start of summer.

Speaker 2 (16:09):
I was I was ending the episode because I thought
we were at the quote of the day.

Speaker 1 (16:13):
Al no, no, we're best beaches in the United States.

Speaker 2 (16:17):
That's on me, y'all. I completely skipped over this last story,
which is, yes about the best beaches in the US.
Some of you might be listening to us on the
beach as we speak. So the best beaches in the US,
I give you four guesses. No, if I give you three,
your first three guesses, where are they? You're going to
probably say Florida, Florida, California say California, and Hawaii say Hawaii.
The best beach in the US is not in any

(16:39):
of those places.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
According to someone, this is an annual list that's been
put out by a guy who goes by the name
of doctor Beach, a professor at Florida International University and
a coastal scientist. So I guess this is somewhat legit.
I take issue with a couple of these things. But okay,
So the best beach in the country Cooper's Beach in Southampton.

Speaker 2 (17:00):
New York. Well do you take issue with that?

Speaker 1 (17:02):
Yes, I've been there. It's lovely. Yes, I just feel like,
how does that compete with some California and some Hawaiian beaches?

Speaker 2 (17:10):
But okay, he has an extensive list of criterion things
he considers, but this beach has been making his way
up the charts, if you will, of his charts. It
was number three and twenty twenty three, and then number
two last year. So here it is. It's on the
south shore of Long Island, New York. It's described as
and I quote, hundreds of yards wide, made of grainy
white quartz sand and backed by large sand dunes covered

(17:33):
by American beach grass interspersed with extravagant mansions.

Speaker 1 (17:39):
That is true, That is an accurate description. I've had
a couple lovely bonfires on that beach, so it's pretty.
But okay, after Cooper's Beach number two on the list
is I'm going to have a hard time saying all
of these Wala Beach in Maui. I'm sure that's I've
never been there, but I'm sure it's gorgeous. Number three
is Poi Poo Poypoo Beach, and I really want to

(18:01):
go to Kawai. I've never been there. Number four on
the list is del Nor Wiggins Pass State Park in Naples, Florida.
Naples is gorgeous. Number five is, well, we're back in
New York Maine beach in East Hampton. I'm seeing a
like skewing to the East coast. Yeah, I'm just saying.

Speaker 2 (18:20):
Maybe those beaches are just stepped their game up. But
rounding out the top five is actually a beach. Do
you know this one? South Carolina beach?

Speaker 1 (18:28):
It ki Island. It's gorgeous, Yes, in South Carolina.

Speaker 2 (18:31):
Gives another one in Florida, Hawaii, Hawaii, and then one.

Speaker 1 (18:35):
Okay, so again East coast. There's no California beaches on.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
This East Coast bias.

Speaker 1 (18:40):
It's a wild thing not to include some of those gorgeous,
gorgeous beaches that you you lived in San Francisco, you
know the Catalune Bay, Laguna Beach.

Speaker 2 (18:50):
It seems wild that coastal treasure of ours doesn't have
a beach that's one of the best.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
Yeah, all right, well that is according to doctor Beach.
So y'all can debate that how you like. But as
you go about your day on this Memorial Day, we
have something you'd like to consider. And this is in
honor of where we have spent our Memorial Day weekend.
So TJ, would you like to read the quote of
the day.

Speaker 2 (19:13):
You only passed through this life once. You don't come
back for an encore. That, folks were spoken from the
guy who once he left, he was gone. There was
no encore. Elvis Presley has left the building, has left
els has left the building. Yes, I don't know where
you doug this or not, but yes, as we record this,

(19:35):
we are literally sitting in the Peabody Hotel, the historic
Peabody Hotel in downtown Memphis. This is an area, of course,
where I did all my growing up. So good to
have you home.

Speaker 1 (19:47):
Yes, and it was lovely to visit. I have fallen
in love with Memphis oddly throughout I've been to all
fifty states, but I had never been to Memphis, and
so this was so cool. This is your hometown, West
MEMPHISI is specifically, but it's about ten minutes over the
river and anyway, it's been beautiful here and I just thought,
you know, the Elvis is everywhere. If you come to Memphis,

(20:08):
you know that. But I loved this quote and so
we'll share it with you one more time as you
make your way on your Memorial Day. You only pass
through this life once. You don't come back for an encore.
Hope you make this day count. Thanks for running with us,
every one.

Speaker 2 (20:24):
I mean you Robot and I'm GJ. Holmes. Always appreciate
you running with us or thank you very much.
