Speaker 1 (00:01):
Morning Run with Amy and TJ and iHeartRadio podcast. Good
morning everyone, This is your Morning Run for Thursday May First,
I'm Amy Robox.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
And I'm DJ Holmes. On the Run this morning. The
US economy has done something it hasn't done in three years,
and that's bad. Trump's reaction blame Biden and then tells
American kids to brace themselves for fewer dolls. We'll explain,
all right.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Then Kamala Harris speaks out for the first time since
losing the election, and Harris points the finger at Trump.
CBS is under fire from Bill Belichick. The Super Bowl
winning coach, is accusing the network of falsely editing his
interview to make his girlfriend look bad.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Also on the Run this morning, the most expensive prank
call ever. It's got to be the NFL hands out
huge finds over that fake call to Shador Sanders during
the draft. We're talking about three hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Also,
horror at a Major League baseball game last night as
a man falls from the stands onto the field in
(01:04):
the middle of the game.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
And singer Michael Bolton reveals he's been privately fighting brain
cancer for the past eighteen months, and Katie Perry speaks
out about all that hate she's been receiving from her
trip to space.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
Plus, Jack Black's song from a Minecraft movie has just
set a pretty unbelievable record. We have been listening to
it this morning. It only took us about three minutes
to listen to it about fifty times. We'll explain the
record coming up. It's a cool story, this one.
Speaker 1 (01:34):
Yes, we're excited about that. But we begin our run
on this Thursday morning talking about your money. So why
was President Trump talking about your kid's dolls? In a
Marie Antoinette ish moment, the President conceded that Americans might
end up paying more for stuff in the short term
while his trade war with China plays out.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Yeah, in his cabinet meeting yesterday, Trump said this, well,
maybe the children will have two dolls instead of thirty dollars,
So maybe the dolls will cost a couple bucks more
than they would normally end quote. Now, a lot of people,
namely the person sitting across from the table for me
as we were putting together this podcast this morning, let
(02:13):
them eat cake. It reminds people very much of that
famous Brie Antoinette line and scene an idea of kind
of telling other folks deal with your problems.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
Its tone, tone deaf, exactly right.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
All right, So this was the part of White House
campaign really yesterday to battle the negative headlines about the economy,
and there were a lot of them.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Yeah, headlines like the US economy had its worst quarter
since twenty twenty two. You know, Trump hates seeing headlines
like that. There's a new report, this is what the
headlines are all about, that shows there has been a
sharp slowdown in our gross domestic product that measures all
the goods and services being produced in this country. And
economists have all pointed to Trump's tariffs and the escalating
(02:56):
trade war with China for those weak numbers.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
No, no, no, no, Trump says, all all you economists got
it wrong. That's not the issue at all. The real
issue is former President Biden. Trump posted this saying our
country will boom, but we have to get rid of
the Biden overhang. This will take a while, has nothing
to do with tariffs, only that he left us with
(03:20):
bad numbers. But when the boom begins, it will be
like no other.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
Be patient, I like because we can't fully explain that
those were some of those sentences were in all caps,
like this has nothing to do with tariffs, was in
all caps.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
But the other part he included in it, and that's
a big deal. I think he's actually seemed to be
acknowledging some pain. Yeah. The other all caps was when
he said be patient.
Speaker 1 (03:43):
Be patient. Well, a big part of the drag on
our GDP. There has been an import frenzy recently in
this country. It makes sense when we explain why Americans
and American companies have been buying up as many international
goods as they can before the tariff deadline, and that
drove imports. So last quarter, the fourth quarter of last year,
(04:05):
point negative one point nine percent, that was our imports
this quarter, this first quarter of this year forty one
point three percent.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Incredible.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
That is remarkable, and that's why we're seeing those declining
numbers in the GDP. All right. Former Vice President Kamala
Harris made her first major speech since leaving office, and
as expected, she took the opportunity to slam President Trump.
Harris said Trump's tariffs are reckless and clearly inviting a recession,
calling them the greatest man made economic crisis in modern
(04:38):
presidential history.
Speaker 2 (04:39):
Doesn't that almost sound like a superlative that Trump would use. Yes, yes, exactly,
he's rubbing off on her. Finally, but she went on
to say, give a warning here that our fundamental rights
and freedoms are in jeopardy, and that Trump's agenda is
quote self serving vision of America where they punish truth
teller's favor, loyalists, cash on their power, and leave everyone
(05:02):
else to fend for themselves. Quote. This was the first
time since the election, Yes, that Harris has made comments
about the Trump White House. She's speaking at a This
was last night at an event in San Francisco for
a group that helps women run for political office.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
Yeah. In that speech, she also praised people who've stood
up to Trump, from judges to those who've spoken out
against the deportations. To Senator Corey Booker, she pointed him
out specifically, who talked for twenty five hours on the
Senate floor in protest of Trump's policies. Now, there has
been recent talk that Harris may be considering running for
governor of California, that's, of course, her home state, or
(05:36):
even another run for president in twenty twenty eight.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
All Right, we continue here on this Thursday morning Ron
with CBS being accused of selectively editing its recent interview
with coach Bill Belichick. Who's doing the accusing. Bill Belichick,
the Super Bowl winning coach, said the network was trying
to create a false narrative about his girlfriend, Jordan Hudson,
who at one point during the taped interview, could be
heard off cameras saying, we're not talking about this when
(06:02):
the interviewer asked about how the two met.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
Now Jordan is twenty four, Bill is seventy three. Belichick
released a statement in which he strongly defended his girlfriend
and a QCBs of not sticking to the rules, saying
he had clearly communicated to his book publicist that any
promotional interviews he participated in would agree to focus solely
on the contents of the book. Unfortunately, that exception was
(06:26):
not honored during the interview.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Belichick says, yeah, he said he shares a personal and
professional relationship with Hudson, who was doing her job, He says,
by trying to keep the interview on track, He said
that the segment that aired quote does not reflect the
productive thirty five minute conversation we had, which covered a
wide range of topics related to my career. Instead, it
presents selectively edited clips and stills from just a few
(06:51):
minutes of the interview to suggest a false narrative that
Jordan was attempting to control the conversation, which simply is
not true.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
CBS called BS on that assertion, saying in its own
statement that they'd agreed to a wide ranging interview and
that there were no preconditions or limitations to the conversation.
This was confirmed repeatedly with his publisher before the interview
took place, and then after it was completed. We noted this.
You saw this yesterday, so Bill Belichick saying, hey, my
(07:20):
publicist said that we were only going to talk about
the book, and then CBS said, the publisher said that
the interview could be wide ranging, So we don't know
if that's a distinction that could possibly mean that both
people are telling the truth.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
We've done this an awful lot. How does this mistake
get made? He also claimed that he's told the interviewer
several times, no, we're going to move on to something
like He had several attempts, So the one you see
his girlfriend actually interject was after several more of saying no,
we were sticking with the book, I don't know. And networks,
no matter what you say, make deals all the time.
(08:00):
They do well almost every time about what is and
isn't going to be talked about in an interview. So
to suggest that there may bee wasn't a conversation.
Speaker 1 (08:10):
Ahead of time, well, and also just this is pulling
back the curtains a little bit. Sometimes publicists or PR
folks make deals, but the journalists, because I have always
taken on this practice after making a few mistakes early
on in my career, to not do interviews where someone
tells me you can't answer ask this question. They can
answer it however they'd like, including I have no comment,
(08:33):
but most journalists would say that we would never go
into an interview already being told they can't ask a
certain question. So I buy that.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
So what I'm saying journalists will say that, and journalists
I'm calling bs on that. Yep, we have all gone
into countless interviews in our career. Was that, hey, we're
going to stay away from that. Thing was whispered in
our ear and an agreement said okay, informally, not a
big deal. This is I'm very curious to know what
happened here. Well, we're going to continue on our run now,
with perhaps the most expensive prank call in human history,
(09:04):
the NFL has find the Atlanta Falcons two hundred and
fifty thousand dollars and find their defensive coordinator, Jeff Ulbrich
another one hundred thousand dollars for failing to protect confidential information,
namely Shador Sanders phone number.
Speaker 1 (09:20):
You might remember. Sanders, the superstar quarterback from Colorado and
son of NFL legend Dion Sanders, received a call from
someone during the draft pretending to be an NFL owner.
Turns out, the son of coach Ulbrich later admitted he
was responsible for it, having unintentionally come across the number
on an open iPad at his dad's house.
Speaker 2 (09:40):
Yeah, he said. He wrote it down for the intent
he was going to use it later for prank call,
so he wrote it down for that reason, later gave
it to his friend. His friend actually made the call,
but the two were sitting there together and laughing it
up when this was happening. Now. The Sun later apologized publicly,
and his dad apologized publicly yesterday, calling it inexcusable him
to not protect confidential info. But Robes, it's your own
(10:04):
house is nothing here but family. I don't think you
would it would ever cross your mind that I need
to protect this from my own kid.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
No, that would not have been something that he reasonably
wouldn't have thought of a.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Kid who's an adult.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
By the way, exact one exactly well. The coach said,
when he found out what happened, he got in touch
with Dion and Shador and said they were amazingly gracious,
more gracious than they needed to be in a moment
like this. That's pretty cool to hear. And he also
said he promised that he and his son will work
to demonstrate that quote we are better than this.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
End quote and a lesson there people deserve grace. This
was ugly, we call this was a mean, mean brank
But to hear him say how gracious theond and his
son were, we can all learn something like that. I
appreciated this part of the store.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
It actually does have a kind of a heartwarming ending.
And I do like and appreciate that there is and
there have been consequences, that there are financial consequences that
have to be paid. I think that's an important part
of the grace and the understanding there needs to be
a punishment.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
Goes along with something that Katy Perry said that we love.
We're going to talk about here in a few minutes.
We stick around for that, but next up on the
rundown here, this was kind of just a horrific thing
that played out last night at a Major League baseball game.
A fan fell from the stands and fell onto the
playing field. He is reportedly in critical condition this morning.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
You have this horrific scene played out in the seventh
inning at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. It was a game
between the Pirates and the Chicago Cubs. It was all
captured on video as the play was going on. TJ.
You and I watched it to see and you can
see the guy go over a barrier and his body
literally was flopping and tumbling in the air as it
(11:50):
before it hit the ground in right field, And it
was so dramatic when you knew to look for it.
But the play was still going on, the game was
still going on. They had their backs turned to many
of them and didn't even see it happening.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Yeah, one of somebody in the dugout described just the
whole like this play was going on while the man's
body was laying on the field. The guys it was
just so far they couldn't see it. The man was
treated for several minutes on the field before being taken
away on a stretch up again reportedly in critical condition
this morning. This has come up in several arenas and stadiums.
People fall. There have been deaths of Major League games before,
(12:23):
as recently as twenty fifteen. Usually there's some issue about
guard rails and how high they should be. Oftentimes don't
know what happened. Look, it's hard to see, so I
don't want to describe what I think I saw. Yeah,
so they we'll just leave it there. But I hope
he's going to be okay. But you see the line
I added, there's one of the players. I thought that
was a nice moment.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
Yeah. One of the players said, it's a humble reminder
of the gratitude we should all have to play this game. Yeah,
it was a sad story. We will continue to update
you on the man's condition.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
All right, well, stay with us here on this Thursday morning.
Ron coming up one of our favorites, Michael Bolton. Actually
he is sharing some really tough news about his health.
Will tell you what's happening with them. Also, we're hearing
from Katie Perry after receiving all that backlash for her
trip to space. Well, she kind of had a kind
message for the people out there treating her like a
(13:13):
human pinata. And a record has been set on the
Billboard charts, not at the top, but near the bottom.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
Both It's black, Welcome back to this Thursday Morning Ron
and next up on the Run. One of our absolute favorites,
singer Michael Bolton, has revealed that he has been battling
brain cancer for the past year and a half. Bolton
(13:43):
was diagnosed with a glioblastoma back in December of twenty
twenty three, and he had it removed in emergency surgery.
Speaker 2 (13:49):
Yeah. We had a second brain surgery the following month
after an infection set in.
Speaker 1 (13:53):
Now while glio, yeah, glioblastomas.
Speaker 2 (13:56):
Glioblastomas are the most common malignant brain tumors, and adult
surgery can only slow further growth and ease symptoms, no cure.
In fact, the Cleveland Clinic puts it this way that
without treatment, a cancer like this can really result in
death in as few as six months.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
Yeah, this is a devastating disease. Bolton said. He underwent
both radiation and chemotherapy. He now gets an MRI every
two months to monitor any new tumor growth. The singer
described the toll it's taken on him, both emotionally and physically,
saying he now has issues with his memory, mobility, and speech.
But I love what he had to say about his fight.
(14:35):
Succumbing to the challenge is not an option. You're really
quickly drawn into a duel, and I guess that's the
way you find out what you're made of. Look, my
uncle has battled this specific disease four years now, and
it takes a so much of a toll. But I
just loved his spirit and I loved his message, and
I love that he's sharing it because when people share
(14:57):
public figures, share their battles, it raises awareness, it raises funding,
and it's just a brave thing to do because it's
it's not always fun or ideal to be regarded in
that way as weak or as a cancer patient. But
I applaud him for speaking out.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
It's something it's so hard to talk about because it
seems just so devastating and sad, and no, they're no
happy ending, it seems. But he's found a way, like
you said you in and on a very good quote
of his there so and again we will we should
explain what he's one of our absolutely favorites and means
a lot to us. But we'll continue here on this
Thursday morning. Wrong with Katy Perry. She is talking to
(15:32):
her fans and letting them know she's okay, and she's
also talking directly to all those haters. None of you,
of course, listen, not you haters, those haters out there
who pounced on her for flying to space on that
all female and celebrity Blue Origin flight last month.
Speaker 1 (15:48):
Yes, Perry's saying this, when the online world tries to
make me a human pinata, I take it with grace
and send them love because I know so many people
are hurting in so many ways, and the internet is
very much so a dumping ground for the unhinged and unhealed.
Well said Katie, and well played.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
I mean, she could have taken a shot at them.
But we have talked to the therapist, doctor Gardier, one
of them before. He said, sometimes people are in their
own pain and they're projecting that onto you in some way.
And yes, the internet is a place they can do it.
But this is well said I'm going to refer to
this probably a lot yep in the coming days, weeks, months,
and even years. But she was seemingly singled out among
(16:29):
those six women on that team because maybe she's the
most famous of the bunch, but she was ridiculed and
criticized not just by anonymous social media users, but also
several well known women like model Emily.
Speaker 1 (16:40):
It's Radakowski Redikowski.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
Redikowski and also actresses Olivia Mount and Olivia Wild. Wendy's
even jumped in on the hay with several really negative
online memes about the singer.
Speaker 1 (16:52):
But you know, this was a bright point. Just want
to bring this up because we talked about it on
yesterday's morning run. But this is just an also nice
act trick to the story. British pop singer Lily Allen
apologized directly to Perry for her harsh words, acknowledging she
was being mean. Alan said she recognized her own internal
misogyny in her words that she chose, and I just
(17:14):
I thought that was really brave of her as well
to admit that and hopefully that can get some people thinking.
But also Katy Perry's description of what it felt like
human pinata that resonates. It feels physical, almost like you're
just getting beaten up.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
You can take issue with the flight. Nobody's saying not
to have an opinion about it, but it's just when
things get mean and unnecessary, that's tough. But good for her.
Katy Perry on our final leg here, we've been talking
about this and listening actually to this all morning. We're
gonna focus on the song that's number seventy eight on
the latest Billboard Hot one hundred Singles chart. Now why
(17:51):
because the song at number seventy eight has just set
a record for the shortest song to ever beyond the
Billboard charts.
Speaker 1 (18:01):
It's a song from a Minecraft movie, the mega hit
that's made over eight hundred million dollars at the box
office so far. The song is called Steve's Lava Chicken
and it's sung by Jack Black, who stars in the movie.
We have been listening to it this morning, and you know,
it's just like a funny, upbeat, ear warm, earwormy little song.
Of the scene in the movie is when a character
(18:22):
was explaining how to cook chicken using lava and yeah,
it is just thirty four seconds.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
Yes, that is the shortest. Now, song to ever be
on the Billboard charts. How can you make a thirty
four second song? The song is so short that we
are right now going to sing the entire song to you. Okay,
we're just.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
Gonna say we that would be you.
Speaker 2 (18:45):
Okay, we are just gonna share the lyrics. I'm serious,
you all. This is it. It's a thirty four second song,
and the lyrics though like this. Go ahead, Robes you
take it away.
Speaker 1 (18:53):
La la la lava chicken, Steve's lava chicken. Yes, it's
tasty as hell. Ooh, mama, cita. Now you're ringing the bell.
Crispy and juicy. Now you're having a snack. Oohs super spicy.
It's a lava attack. That's it. You know what. It's
funny like when we were listening to it. It has
a great beat. It's fun. It's funny, and I wanted
it to keep going. I wish they made it two
(19:14):
minutes in thirty four seconds.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
The first time I played it for you, he said,
can you play it again? I want to hear them
are and it is fun, but please check it out.
It won't take you long. But would you believe we
hear thirty four seconds? Like that has to be. It
had to blown the other songs out of the world. Right,
There was a thirty seven second song by Kid Coody.
It was a beautiful trip. Never heard of it, of course.
Speaker 1 (19:36):
But hey, they made the record. They beat it by
three seconds, so good for them.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
Here's the Jag Black. But before you go on this Thursday,
something we like for you to consider as you go
about your day. Our quote the day This Thursday is
tied to the first day of Mental Health Awareness Month.
Mental Health Awareness months start today.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
Yeah, and it's an important month for everyone to recognize
that so many people suffer in silence as well with
mental disorders. But I loved this quote. It's from Paradise
Lost by the Way by John Milton, but this is
just such a cool quote. The mind is its own place,
and in itself can make a heaven of hell or
(20:13):
a hell of heaven. Really, the power is within you.
It's how you look at things, it's how you react
to things. And I think just remembering that we do
have our own power to change how we think, but
we have to recognize it first.
Speaker 2 (20:27):
To take that with you today, folks. The mind is
its own place and in itself can make a heaven
of hell, hell of heaven. And with that, folks surely
appreciate you running with us.
Speaker 1 (20:37):
So you tomorrow for the run on T Jail And
I'm Amy Robach, thanks for running with us.
