Tonight’s highly anticipated news conference following a historic meeting between Presidents Trump and Putin on American soil left journalists scrambling for answers. Many were hoping the world leaders would announce a ceasefire or at least take questions from reporters but as Amy and T.J. discuss, instead we only heard a few, vague remarks about an unspecified agreement and Putin throwing Trump a major bone, announcing he would never have attacked Ukraine had Trump been president in 2022.

Speaker 1 (00:02):
Hey, they're folks. It is Friday, August fifteenth, and we
are such losers that we planned our entire Friday and
Friday night around a press conference having to do with
the President of Russia and the President of the United States.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
We thought this was going to be musty television. Wanted
to have a cocktail in hand. It was definitely past
five o'clock where.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
We were, and boy, have we been let down. Welcome
to this episode of Amy DJ Road. It's kind of
weird to say, but we absolutely as we're recording this,
we planned the day and a Friday evening. This is
our It's a really big day for us. We have
very early mornings all week. Friday is a big deal.

(00:45):
We wanted to watch this press conference because we said
earlier this is must see television.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Not only is it history in the making, You've got
the President of Russia vla Putin, meeting with on American
soil in Alaska, meeting with the President of the United
States amid this war with Ukraine and pursuing peaces in
the backdrop, and this is a moment where we may
get a huge announcement about a ceasefire. At least that's

(01:11):
what President Trump was touting, you have journalists from all
around the world waiting on the edge of their seats
for these two powerful men, two of the most powerful
men in the world, to walk out and have this
joint press conference.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
And how long did it last?

Speaker 1 (01:25):
To ten minutes, eleven minutes something like that. This was
a big, fat dud in terms of news worthiness. And
I say that because, yes, the biggest goal, I mean
really from a news world and humanitarian standpoint, there was
potential these who could walk out and say that this

(01:46):
war has killed untold thousands, or the past three and
a half years is over. Yes, that was a possibility.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Yes, and President Trump is actively hoping to at least
up his chances of a nobel peace price. So you know,
he is highly motivated to make this happen, and it
has said as much. But the most entertaining, and I
hate to even use the word entertaining, but the most interesting,
fascinating and yes, entertaining part of this whole evening was
watching the news media, our fellow colleagues scramble not really

(02:17):
knowing what to say or to do. When Trump and
Putin just walked off the stage. There was no actual detail,
There was no deal. It appears there was no word
ceasefire used and there were no questions being taken, and
I think that's.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
What really threw so many reporters, so.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
Many anchors who traveled to Anchorage to be there to
get their question, to actually press either one of the
leaders on any of these fine points. It was so vague,
it was so obscure, and nothing happened.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
I don't know there is the expectations should have been
high and should have been off the charts. This was
the first meeting between the president of these two countries
since twenty twenty one. To have them two face to
face is a big deal. To have them face to
face on American soil is a big deal. To have
these two personalities, yes, face to face is a big deal.

(03:08):
And to have the potential for this war to end
is a big deal. Rogues We've been talking about it
was it Monday? When was the announcement made that this
meeting was gonna happen the beginning of the week, right,
this is every single day, been talking about this, the expectations,
what's possible because Zelenski possibly come to this, that all
of this build up and rogues we're watching and we

(03:31):
talked about the build up, and you know, people will
see the TV coverage. It's just a live camera. You
just see the room. The room starts filling out. There
are more people in the chairs and more and more,
and then we see the big dogs come in and
sit in the front seat and we're like, all right,
this is it and they finally come out. Now Putin
spoke first, didn't say a whole lot. The thing that

(03:53):
jumped out was a compliment, a compliment that he went
out of his way to give President Trump and to
essentially confirm something that Trump has been the preaching for
quite a while.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
This was for me, probably the biggest moment just in
terms of whoa he actually said that. So President Putin
said during this news conference that he can confirm he
would not have attacked Ukraine had Trump been president in
twenty twenty two. And while Putin said this, they had
a shot of President Trump and he was beaming as

(04:30):
Putin said this. So was this planned? Was this a
gift that Putin gave Trump? Trump's going to give him
something in return behind the scenes, I don't know, but
it did seem fairly bold and it wasn't backed up
with any explanation as to why he wouldn't have attacked
Ukraine if Trump were president.

Speaker 1 (04:51):
Well, he was giving some explanation that he tried with
and he mentioned Biden. He mentioned Trump's predecessors, mentioned that
he had conversations with the predecessor and tried to convince
Biden of something that isolation should not be brought to
the point of no return, he said, and mentioned the
other guy who was in office, and he set the

(05:11):
whole thing up. This was flattery. You could argue Putin
has been given what former KGB guy, This guy knows
how to manipulate the world. This was flattery. And you
know how much Trump appreciated Putin getting up. How many
times have we heard Trump say that that war never

(05:31):
would have started I was in office.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
He said it repeatedly and often, and so to have
President Putin confirm it in front of the world during
this press conference when not a lot else was said,
this was probably a headline making statement because there really
wasn't another worthy headline making statement said by either world leader.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
There you go. Headline is that there is no headline.
That's a good way to wit ropes. There is actually
no headline that came out of this, I think it
became interesting to us. They use the word agreement, they said,
because of the I have it right right. They kept
saying something about an agreement that's been reached.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
There, Yes, an agreement's been reached.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
They said that they've made some really great progress today,
but they wouldn't give any specific.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
Details about what that progress was.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
They talked about having a great relationship, they made some
great headway. But the other probably headline is that Trump
said there's no deal until there's a deal.

Speaker 3 (06:25):
So you could.

Speaker 2 (06:26):
Infer I don't know if those two things don't really jibe.
To say that we've reached an agreement and then to
hear there's no deal until there's a deal. That is
a confusing two statements that were said within a matter
of minutes of one another.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
They gave no specific I mean, I mean they were
barely even vague.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
You could argue that barely even vague.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
Kept saying many points we agreed on something that Trump said,
extremely productive, meaning many points we agreed to. Some that
are left one probably the most significant. We have a
very good chance of there. We didn't get there. What
those are direct quotes, I mean, that's what they said
I'm not lacking context or some other parts of that quote.

(07:08):
That's what they're saying, and they just didn't give a
whole lot. I'm sure some information will start to trick
a lout, but as of now, it's just amazing that
the build up that the build up to this week
and the potential for what it could be turned out
to be a big fat nothing. So they both split time.
President Putin spoke for the first half of it. Then
President Trump spoke, and even while they were speaking, you

(07:31):
could see Robe and this happens, reporters were sticking their
hands up, well, try to get it's not your time.
They're still speaking, they know, but they'll they'll try just
in case a leader might say, oh, to hell with it,
and that's and take a question. Hands kept going up.
Trump kept speaking. You could tell Trump was wrapping up.
Then you could see those hands really start going up.
And then something weird happened. Robes. President Trump in front

(07:53):
of the world and a room full of reporters did
not take.

Speaker 2 (07:57):
Questions, and that is highly unusual. This is a president
who always takes questions. You could almost say we saw
him on the way to Alaska with the press on
his plane, peeping his head into where the reporters.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
Were answering questions playfully.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
This is someone who loves to engage with reporters and
the media, and certainly in this moment, this was his moment.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
A meeting he called a meeting. The world was watching.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
It seemed incredibly odd that he didn't take questions, and
you could see how thrown the reporters were. You could
see how thrown the media was. Everyone thought there was
going to be a lot to chew on.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
We included in that group.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
We were expecting to be taking copious notes and really
leaning in and listening to how he handled all of
these questions. He did not take one, which was wild.
Also well, the meeting was reportedly supposed to be like
six or seven hours of discussions between Putin and Trump.

Speaker 3 (08:51):
The reports are that they only.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
Had about half of that, about three hours of talks,
and so there's questions about just how much progress was
made or not made.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
Another change was the one on one. It was supposed
to be one on one, It ended up being three
on three. I think that uh Rubio and then the
Middle East envoy on the US side joined Trump for
the meeting, and then a couple of envoys on the
other side joint, so that was a change as well.
Just I think it became and all the networks had
their they cut into their coverage tonight to do this.

(09:23):
I don't think they would have done it had they
know there was going to be no news and a
twelve minute press conference of just a couple of flat statements.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
You don't break into Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, you
know that unless you think this is going to be huge.
And everyone had their big dogs, their main anchors, their
most prominent journalists on this story waiting for some major
news to be broken, and it just didn't happen.

Speaker 3 (09:49):
It was a big womp wan Okay.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
So this is where it got funny to us because
we have been there, done that in our television broadcasting,
our news careers. So as it was so abrupt, and
given it's Trump, we could have actually braced ourselves for
another hour of those press conference of him. So he's
done that no problem in the past. So he stops talking.

(10:15):
They both come around the podiums and shake hands and
take pictures and they're walking off now robes. We saw
almost panic on the faces of some of the correspond
absolute panic, Wait a minute, what do we do now.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
And what just happened and what do we actually report?
And so as we were listening to it, and we
only laugh because we know because we've been there. But
basically it was just anchors throwing to reporters who were
repeating that they didn't know anything, back and forth through
each other, to the point where we both looked at
each other and started laughing, because, yes, you have to
fill the air somehow, some way, but when you don't
have information, you keep talking about what you didn't hear,

(10:53):
what you don't know, and what you expected them to
say that they didn't say, and you don't know what
it means.

Speaker 3 (10:58):
And that is what we got from.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
And just every single network was in the same boat,
and every single correspondent was struggling to find the words
and then just kept repeating the same words over and over.
It Actually that became the entertainment of the evening, was
to watch our fellow colleagues. And yes, we again are
commiserating because we know how hard it is. Live television
is one of the hardest things to do in the world.

(11:21):
And when you have that kind of pressure with this
kind of story, and you literally have no information.

Speaker 3 (11:26):
It's it's it's challenging. Let's just say.

Speaker 1 (11:29):
Reporting a story. Yes, this was this is the biggest
story going right now. This could look we're talking about
a press conference, but we're talking about ending a war,
and so everybody's chopping at the bit. What did they discuss,
what did they agree to? They could get us closer
to that? And all they did, Like I said, they
don't even breadcrumbs. We don't even know where to what

(11:49):
to even ask. And because they were so they're okay,
had this has got to be the issue. Whatever they
did agree to had to be so insignificant, so small,
that they didn't even want to take a question about it.
They didn't even want to be challenged on it, because
obviously it must not be a big deal.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
Now, yes, I would agree with you, because he would
have wanted to tout something, to have something to say,
see what we did, here's what we did. You would
want to roll out your list of accomplishments from the meeting,
actual things that happen that are going to change or
at least end or lead to the end of this war.
Trump is expected to sit down, though, with a one

(12:32):
on one interview with Fox News before he heads back home,
So that might be happening right now. Actually, as we're
recording this, it will be interesting to see just how
much he is pressed on those details if and when
he actually does sit down and do this interview.

Speaker 1 (12:48):
Okay, so there were a bunch of interesting moments, not
a lot of information, but a couple of interesting moments.
But one of maybe the most interesting nuggets that came
out of it happened at the absolute end at the
press conference, and it had to do with an invitation
that was extended from one leader to the other.

Speaker 2 (13:18):
Welcome back everyone to this edition of Amy and TJ,
where we just watched that uh press conference that really
wasn't much of anything at all, highly anticipated, the world watching,
reporters scrambling to try.

Speaker 3 (13:32):
And figure out what the hell just happened or didn't happen.

Speaker 2 (13:37):
And as we were waiting for any kind of clue
as to what agreement or if a ceasefire had been reached,
it was just a lot of generic, vague statements of progress.

Speaker 1 (13:50):
We've agreed to some things, not other things, and then
one big thing we couldn't agree on, but we'll see.

Speaker 2 (13:56):
But no questions, no questions, And there was you just
rough before we went to break this this very interesting,
odd moment that happened.

Speaker 3 (14:05):
It couldn't have been planned.

Speaker 1 (14:07):
I don't know. The way they talk about Pootin, everything
seems planned. It seemed like he might have had this
up his sleeve and was ready to do that in
front of the world. But I thought that was a
hell of a It seemed like it threw Trump all
but Trump, but you know what he was, He's quick
on his feet. He had a response.

Speaker 3 (14:23):
He certainly did.

Speaker 1 (14:24):
So.

Speaker 2 (14:25):
Putin invited Trump to meet with him in Moscow next
so he said, you know, hey, we should we should
keep talking. He's like, yes, next time in Moscow. And
Trump called the idea interesting, but then quickly said, hey,
I'm going to give a little heat for that one
if I if I end up going to Moscow.

Speaker 3 (14:42):
So like, he made no promises.

Speaker 2 (14:43):
But it was a quick little moment of levity that
Putin added to an otherwise awkward and uneventful press conference.

Speaker 1 (14:52):
But he put him on public notice. The idea of
the President of the United States going to Moscow.

Speaker 4 (14:59):
Nah, I could see that I could see this president,
this president President Trump doing it in an effort to
as he is again chasing that Nobel Peace Prize, saying
I did what I had to do.

Speaker 3 (15:11):
To make the world a safer place, a more peaceful place.

Speaker 1 (15:14):
You know, I'm looking at the play by play robes
here of NBC. I didn't realize we talked about the split.
It apparently went eleven twelve minutes. I didn't realize Putin
they kept a clock. He spoke eight minutes and the
President only spoke for three.

Speaker 3 (15:28):
What that is wild?

Speaker 2 (15:30):
Wow for Trump. For President Trump, who has made such
a show of this meeting, and even like we saw
him on the Air Force one on the plane heading
to Alaska.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
He was he gave interviews, he did a press gaggle, he.

Speaker 2 (15:45):
Was walking and talking and jovial and excited. This was
his moment. He's meeting with Putin. He's going to change
the world. So for oh my goodness, I didn't realize
he only spoke for three minutes.

Speaker 3 (15:56):
So that tells you all you need to know.

Speaker 2 (15:58):
If President Trump chose to only speak for three minutes
after this major meeting with Putin, he did not get
what he wanted.

Speaker 1 (16:05):
He didn't That is so true. All right, Well, folks,
I don't know what you're doing on your Friday night.
I know what your plans were, but you know what,
long as you're with the person you want to be with,
it doesn't matter if you're watching a press conference or
watching a scary movie.

Speaker 3 (16:18):
Yeah, what are we going to watch next?

Speaker 1 (16:20):
That scary movie?

Speaker 3 (16:21):
Let's can we put the news?

Speaker 1 (16:23):
Can we start with the news, or just isn't it?

Speaker 2 (16:25):
Isn't it interesting when scary movies are a relief from
the headline.

Speaker 3 (16:29):
That's where we are these days, all right, folks, well.

Speaker 2 (16:32):
Where we you are.

Speaker 1 (16:33):
We always appreciate you hanging out with us. If you
look for a scary movie to watch that out and
see weapons.

Speaker 3 (16:38):
It is so good, so good.

Speaker 1 (16:40):
Trust us. But for my dear partner Amy Robot, I'm
t J. Holmes. Talk to y'all soon.
