Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hunting for Answers is a production of the Black Effect
Podcast Network and iHeartRadio. Welcome to Hunting for Answers, a
true crime podcast. I'm your host Hunter, and today's case
surrounds a woman whose life was rooted in faith, in service,
and in family.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
You expect the people closest to you to protect you,
to love you.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
But what happens when the very person you trust the
most becomes your greatest threat.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
This is the story of Jennifer Ebach.

Speaker 1 (00:39):
Jennifer was thirty two years old, a labor and delivery
nurse at Ascension Seton Medical Center in Austin, Texas. She
was a wife, a mother of two daughters, and she
had just found out she was pregnant with her third child.
Jennifer was the kind of woman who didn't just show.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Up for people.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
She carried them, whether it was her coworkers, her patients,
or her church community. She left an impression that lingered
long after she walked away. But on the afternoon of
December twenty seventh, twenty nineteen, everything changed, and it didn't

(01:25):
change at the hands of a stranger. It changed at
the hands of her own brother. Earlier that day, Jennifer
reached out to her twin brother Martin. It was early,
around five thirty AM, and she was worried their younger brother,

(01:46):
twenty five year old Michael Eguagu was quote acting strange.
She told Martin that he was having what she described
as a mental health crisis. Martin tried to talk Michael
down over the phone, but the situation was slipping into

(02:06):
something far more dangerous than any of them knew. By
four thirty PM, Jennifer sent Martin another message.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
This one was.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
Short and terrifying in hindsight, Come to the house. When
Martin arrived at Jennifer's home in Fluggersville, Texas, he wasn't
met by his sister. Instead, he saw a church member
standing outside holding Jennifer's eldest daughter, who was covered in blood.

(02:40):
Inside the home was an absolute nightmare. Jennifer was on
the floor unresponsive. Her body told her youngest child was
in the next room crying. Jennifer had been stabbed to death. Outside,

(03:03):
just down the street, Michael stood barefoot and bloodied, kneeling
in the road as if he was praying. A neighbor's
doorbell camera recorded what happened next. Michael calmly walked down
the sidewalk covered in blood. He looked into the lens
and said the words no family should ever hear from

(03:25):
their own blood.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
I killed Jennifer.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
He was holding the murder weapon in his hand, an
eight to ten inch kitchen knife stained red. But Michael
wasn't just Jennifer's younger brother. He was once a rising
star an athlete at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
He was known, liked, and trusted.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
But after the murder, friends and witnesses described a chilling
shift in his behavior. They said he was making disturbing
religious statements, that he was hallucinating, and that he was
no longer himself. One friend said she saw him leaving

(04:16):
the home, smiling, ripping the knife, calmly telling.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
Her that he had killed Jennifer.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
Jennifer's autopsy would reveal multiple stab wounds, some to her face,
others to her abdomen. She was in her first trimester
of her pregnancy. The brutality of the attack wasn't just physical,
It was personal. Jennifer died not only as a sister

(04:47):
and mother, but as a protector in her home, in
front of her own children, and in the days that followed,
the community worn Jennifer was.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
A leader in her local community.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
She was deeply rooted in her faith at Mosaic Church,
and in every space she entered, she gave more than
she took.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Her funeral was filled with people who.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Loved her, worked alongside her, and prayed with her. She
was the glue that held her world together, and now
her family was left picking.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
Up the pieces.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
In court, the final blow came in the form of
a verdict. Michael was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
He was committed to a state mental hospital. Prosecutors explained
he would remain institutionalized until professionals determined he was no

(05:56):
longer a danger to himself or others. My thoughts and
prayers are with Jennifer's family and friends as they continue
navigating such a complex and heartbreaking tragedy. As we close
