Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hunting for Answers is a production of the Black Effect
Podcast Network and iHeartRadio. Welcome to Hunting for Answers, a
true crime podcast. I'm your host Hunter, and today we're
discussing a case out of Capital Heights, Maryland. It's a
story surrounding a twenty nine year old mother of three,
a woman with her whole future ahead of her until
(00:24):
she disappeared in January twenty twenty five. Her family pleaded
for answers, but no one would expect the disturbing chain
of events that unfolded. This is the story of Alexis Schuler.
On January tenth, twenty twenty five, Alexis Schuler was last
(00:47):
seen leaving her home with her on again, off again boyfriend,
thirty year old Devonte Gray. It wasn't unusual for the
two to be together. Their relationship had been complicated, marked
by turbulence, distance, and repeated attempts at reconciliation. But something
(01:08):
was different this time. When Alexis didn't return and no
one could reach her, her family became worried. Days passed,
no calls, no texts, no sign of Alexis. On January fourteenth,
her family officially reported her missing. Authorities quickly turned their
(01:32):
attention to DeVante Gray's home and Capital Heights. On January nineteenth,
they executed a search warrant, and what they found was horrifying.
Inside the home, they noticed a weird smell, but saw
nothing else suspicious and Alexis nowhere in sight. But after
(01:56):
days of surveillance, authorities discovered that Alexis had been inside
that home, and once inside, they uncovered a newly constructed
wall built under a staircase. Behind it was what investigators
described as a quote makeshift tune. Alexis's body had been
(02:20):
encased in concrete and soil, stuffed into the space and
concealed with sheet rock. Police say construction tools, cement mix,
and debris were found at the scene. The autopsy confirmed
the cause of death. Alexis had been shot. Devonte Gray
(02:42):
was arrested at the scene and later confessed to the murder.
He told police that the killing happened during a dispute,
but didn't elaborate further. Authorities charged him with first degree murder,
campering with physical evidence, and misuse of a firearm. He's
(03:03):
currently being held without bond. Alexis's mother, Tijuana Schuler, had
long feared for her daughter's safety. She had reportedly warned
Alexis repeatedly about DeVante Gray. In an interview, Tiajuana said quote,
I told her, I don't trust him, I don't like him.
(03:28):
But Alexis, like many others, caught in cycles of control
and manipulation, struggled to break free. Tauana said that when
she filed the missing person report, she knew something was wrong.
Her daughter had never gone this long without contacting her
or her children. The reality was worse than she could
(03:50):
have ever imagined. Alexis Schuler was a devoted mother of three.
She is described as warm, vibrant, and fiercely protective of
her children. Friends say she had a laugh that could
light up a room. Now her children are left without
(04:11):
a mother, and her family is left picking up the
shattered pieces of a future that was stolen all too soon.
Her loved ones are not just grieving, they are demanding justice,
not just for Alexis, but for the countless women who
never make it out of dangerous relationships. My thoughts and
(04:35):
prayers are with the family and friends of Alexis Schuler,
especially her children. They're now being taken care of by
their grandmother. Alexis's mother, Tajuanna. As we close out this episode,
