Speaker 2 (00:46):
Hunting for Answers is a production of the Black Effect
Podcast Network and iHeartRadio. Welcome to Hunting for Answers, a
true crime podcast. I'm your host, Hunter and Today we're
delving into a case that shook the city of Baltimore, Maryland.
A young woman, eight months pregnant vanishes without a trace.
(01:09):
Her baby shower was planned, she was excited for new beginnings,
and then just silence. This case would later take years
to unravel. This is the story of a Kia Eggleston.
May third, twenty seventeen. Twenty two year old Atkia was
(01:32):
just days away from celebrating one of the biggest milestones
of her life. She was eight months pregnant with her son, Anubis,
and was eagerly preparing for her baby shower. But on
that day, she simply disappeared. No goodbyes, no trace, and
no explanation. Her family grew concerned when she failed to
(01:57):
show up to the shower that she had been planning
for months. Calls and messages went unanswered. When they went
to go check on her, they found something very chilling.
Her apartment was nearly empty, her furniture was gone, her
belongings missing, but there was no sign of Akia. Authorities
(02:22):
were alerted and an investigation into her disappearance began. But
there was something strange. Despite being eight months pregnant, Akia
hadn't packed a hospital bag, she hadn't taken baby clothes,
She left behind her bank card, her id, and perhaps
(02:43):
most heartbreakingly, she left behind her young daughter. With every
passing day, the fear deepened. Where was Akia and what
happened to her unborn child. As investigators dug deeper, they
uncovered a startling revelation. Akia had been planning a future
(03:07):
with someone. His name was Michael Robertson, the man she
believed was her boyfriend, the man she trusted, and the
man that she thought she was going to be building
a life with. Text messages revealed that Akia had withdrawn
money for a down payment on a new home, a
(03:28):
home she believed that her and Robertson would be sharing together. However,
there was no record of Robertson making any such arrangements.
The dream that Akia had of a family was in reality,
a carefully spun lie. For years, Akia's family pleaded for answers,
(03:52):
but with nobody, no confirmed crime scene, and no clear
evidence of what had happened, the case grew cold. Her
face appeared on missing persons posters, her name was whispered
in online true crime forums, but there were no answers,
(04:14):
no leads, and no closure, and then in twenty twenty two,
the silence broke. After years of uncertainty, Robertson was arrested
and charged with two counts of first degree murder for
the deaths of both Akia and her unborn son. Prosecutors
(04:38):
laid out a chilling case against him. He had manipulated Akia,
deceiving her into believing they had a future together while
secretly plotting her fate. Though her body was never found.
The evidence was damning, the deception, the missing money, the
(05:00):
sudden disappearance, and in July twenty twenty three, a jury
found him guilty. Then in October twenty twenty three, Robertson
was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences in prison. Justice
was served, but closure was still somehow out of reach.
(05:26):
Akia's mother and family continue to fight for awareness, ensuring
that her story is never forgotten. Though Robertson is behind bars,
the pain of Akia's absence still lingers. Her unborn son
never got the chance to take his first breath, and
her daughter, now growing up without her mother, lives with
(05:49):
an emptiness that words cannot fill. My thoughts and prayers
are with the family and friends of Akia Eggleston as
they continue to cope with the aftermath of this tragedy.
