Gazette with Amy Sugarman and Danielle Romo, an iHeartRadio podcast,
(00:24):
We take you back to April fifth, twenty eleven. On
this night that Parenthood aired, Dancing with the Stars was
airing a season that would eventually be won by Heinz Ward,
the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver. Yeah, and this episode of
Parenthood is airing directly after a special two hour episode
of The Biggest Loser. And then here comes param and
(00:44):
here we are and again this was when The Biggest.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Loser was, Like, this is when it was in its prime,
the Biggest Yes Loser.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Absolutely, So before we dig into it, I just want
to call out because I can't cannot think of his name,
but I know you will know that Ambers date for
the prom is the guy that became so famous for
like American Horror Story and a bunch of stuff, Like
he's really uber famous.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
I think.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
It's guys, he's n Peters, very famous.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Peter who was the murderer that eight people.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
Jeffrey Dahmer.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Did he play Dahmer?
Speaker 1 (01:29):
I don't think he played dam Maybe he did play Dahmer.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Did he did I have that right, but not.
Speaker 1 (01:36):
He played Dahmer in Netflix's Monster. No, that's Charlie han Y.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Yeah yeah he did.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Yes, he was do Yes, Charlie Haunt was at Geen.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Okay so much see my even in the menopause era, Mark,
I still got it.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
That is solid, that's very good.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
So that's him. So I would like to say that
this show launched.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
Care oh for every week, it seems launch the girl.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
That went on to be on Girls Like.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
Yeah, there she was a Syamama.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
It gets to your synopsis.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
Okay synopsis April fifth, twenty eleven, cut off not at all.
Here we go and his parent, who the episode is
called New Plan Crossbeat, does everything you can to get
Jasmine back. Meanwhile, Adam is nervous about Hattie going to
problem with alex As Juliett tries to spend more time
with Sydney Elsewhere, Sarah works at improving her script while
also trying to focus on Amber's future. Directed by Michael Waver,
(02:31):
written by Jamie Dunier.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Here's my hot take, let's hear it really good episode
in that there was a lot of things that I
want to talk about, but overall, I'm not giving it
as high marks as others. I don't really know why.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
I really love this.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Sort of a vibe I have for it because I
love it too. Don't get me wrong, I love it too.
There's lots of things I want to talk about, especially
with Julia and Amber and everybody.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
Start with cross roll.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
So here's what I loved, and you you weigh in,
and he's desperately trying to get her back, which I
you know, I get it. We've all been there, like
in high school. It's the old if I just make
the right mix, yes.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Long, yes, yes, so I get it.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
I like the boat scene when he's selling the house boat.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
But the parts that I really liked.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
Were him and Adam, and I had to call out
also Sarah saying to Adam to show up.
Speaker 1 (03:33):
Yes, he's in pain and he needs us and he's
our brother. That was nice to show up.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Yeah, that was good.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
What is Crosby's current income situation? Like, what is his
job right now?
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Well, he's the music producer. He works at the like
he's like a.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
Music yeah, okay, right, all right, but still I mean
he's going for a one point one million dollar house,
which is one point five millions of days dollars. I
look that up. I mean, it seems seems deep or.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
Could be in the bay are. Although that house was
a bleep pile. It wasn't good.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
Well, the second one was the first one.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
Look, we don't know where he's looking.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Is that Berkeley? I'm assuming we're supposed to assume it's Berkeley.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
He can't be too far from the siblings.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
Yeah, correct, And that's where the kids go to school,
I think. Although I think the houseboat was like in
the Tiberon City area, I don't know the houseboat was
worth something, so he probably could scrap together enough for
like a down payment.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
I mean it's definitely a stretch.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Well, and I also loved the moment when he sold
the boat and he flinched at being called mister Braverman.
That was such a great subtle time to grow up.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Right. I watched it twice. Was yeah, right, right again.
Joel is really the hero of this show.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
And he does not get nearly enough like credit for
being the hero because he's going to help fix that house.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
Well for sure, but that was crying. I did cry
at that point. I cried at the end when Adam
walks in yeah, do you think I can fix it? No,
I think we can fix it.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
Yeah, perfect, I know it's so good.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Now I want to dig deep into the Hattie Michael B.
Jordan's stepping together hallway moment with the parents walking into
the bedroom.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
What's your take? And then I'll say what I think.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
Well, here's my take this show. I love the unpredictability
of this show because the whole episode is they're not
going to have sex? Are they better not have sex?
No sex? She's like, they're not gonna have sex. No
one's gonna She even says to him like you want
to have sex, like no, it's not time yet. And
then they have sex.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Boom because and it was all her doing.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
Yes too, Yes, that's not how a predictable show would
have ended.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
When she walked into her bedroom, did you have a
moment where you thought she might cry?
Speaker 1 (05:47):
Yes? I did smile.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
She's so happy, right, which is very Hattie Like Hattie
is not going to make a decision that isn't right
for her. I say, I liked the whole thing. I
loved them at the prom. They have really great chemistry
as a couple.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
Michael B. Jordan and Sarah Ramos Ramos. Yeah, they're really good.
And here's what we know. Michael B.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
Jordan obviously has gone on to be a movie star.
And I need to watch Sinners. Did you watch Sinners?
Speaker 1 (06:14):
I haven't, but boy, I'm gonna have to.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
I mean everyone's talking about it. It seems too scary to me.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
But all right, all she is so good on Chicago
Med that I think she was sort of didn't get
enough of her flowers, as the kids say, for how
good she was in Parenthood.
Speaker 1 (06:30):
Yeah, she was really great in Parenthood, really good. Couple
quick observations. What is it Adams a real dick this
entire episode until the final scene. He's a dick to
Crossbusya in as his daughter, but also prom is all
about sex? Is it? Is that still the case?
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Because I don't think it so that wasn't even the
case in.
Speaker 1 (06:47):
Art ear No, I don't think it was. No, it was.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
About somehow drinking before the prom.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
Yes, that seems to drinking.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
After the prom, Like that's what I think it was about.
Although did you catch the lawn? And when she comes
out in the purple dress and she goes, I look
like a magician's this is because she did?
Speaker 1 (07:05):
I wrote that down, although I have to say I
thought you like better in that than she did in
the in the gray that she.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Chose, Yeah, that's not gray.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
Actually it was more of a like, no, it was
like a neutral. It was like a Champagne almost maybe
uh you know, it was very bland, almost like a
light mocha.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Look.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
Neither dress were great. I actually thought Amber looked really cool.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
Yeah she did.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
But then we have that, first of all, the fact
I was so shook by the fact that I'm like,
she's literally going with Dahmer, Like.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
I mean, just said Evan Peters went on to become
so major. He's like, yeah, pretty amazing. So here's what
I didn't love.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
Okay, now it doesn't mean I didn't love it in
the show.
Speaker 2 (07:53):
It's just for me.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
I was like, wait, what So first of all, if
she wanted to go to college, why only apply to
two schools?
Speaker 1 (07:58):
Like your question? Yep, fair, she had a.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Chance at Berkeley, how about a Saint Mary's? How about
a Chico? Like, how about uh Santa Clara?
Speaker 3 (08:08):
Like, there's a million schools in the Bay Area that
if she was even remotely had a shot at Berkeley,
she could have.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
Gone to call Oh, for sure.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
What I don't love is this is this sudden pivot.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
She's brummed, and then you know, Mahmmett threw her off
with the Harvard.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
By the way, how Mahmett was going to Harvard? I
have no idea.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
Suddenly she's so like, I don't even want this and
I want to do what I want to do, and
you need to support that.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
It's like, but what what do you want to do?
Speaker 3 (08:37):
Because a minute ago we sort of really thought you
wanted to college.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
So I'm befuddled by who Amber is.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
First of all, thank you Jackie for pointing out that
it's Yale and not Harvard. But uh, secondly, you're right
her whole.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
Pardon me, pardon me, Rory, she'll be joining Rory. She'll
be she'll be with Rory Gilmore to tie it all.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
To this podcast, Okay, continue, This whole thing isn't working.
That whole speech you did would be an excellent monologue
for an acting class, Like I flagged that, Like if
my daughter already is a monologue, I'm giving her this
because this is really a solid thing about Yeah, I
don't maybe maybe she doesn't know what it is. Maybe
she's google her whole life's been going after what Sarah wants.
(09:16):
Now she's got to figure out what she wants.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
But I feel like she's never really gone for what
Sarah wants and Sarah doesn't really do that. So it
was a little for me, like are you talking to
Christina Like this isn't what Sarah does and Sarah's like
that's why. Lauren Graham does make that face a lot
in this show. Do you know the face I'm talking about?
The It's the exact same face she had when Amber
(09:41):
had her melt down in the kitchen with the chicken
and set.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
It's this face of I don't know what.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
To say, I'm heartbroken, I'm in shock. My mouth is
a gape.
Speaker 2 (09:52):
Ah. Yeah, yeah, And so we saw that same face.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
It's sort of the I'm hurt, I'm shocked, I don't
know what to do, this is this is a mess face.
Speaker 1 (10:03):
Well, and we've got some more seasons. Do we figure
out Sarah Amber's path? I don't remember if she finds
her way, yeah, I.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
Mean yeah, you'll find out. I don't know it, I
mean whatever, It's not like people haven't seen it, but
I just was like, Okay, Amber, you could be upset
that who'sy's going to Harvard or Yale whatever it was,
but you could go to college. We thought you wanted
to go to college. Also, it's not too late, like
you can still get in places or go to DVC
(10:31):
and then like all the things right. So I'm just like,
this is kind of I don't know, befuddling is what
I would say.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
It is a little weird.
Speaker 3 (10:39):
Yes, And she was so upset and sort of like,
I'm me and you need to like me, and which
was all well and good, except.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
That I'm like, I think we did like you. Yeah,
we don't know who you are because you're not. You
don't know who you are. I don't know. It's sort
of messy for me.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
Fair And while we're on Sarah, she and Blount. He
offers her a stage reading if she can cut the
first two scenes of Act two, and she pushes back,
and he says, I can't help but think what would
happen he put all that energy into this play. Barry
has no dignity and all this stuff. The ring of
my first wife says blood he's annoying.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
He's annoying.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
I don't know. I thought he was kind of tough. Love,
and I kind of like the tough love element.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
Here's the thing. I feel like, Wow, Richard Dreyfus, this
is awesome. But I'm also like something is annoying about
the character.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
But if he's going to put his career, his reputation
on the line, he needs a lot out of.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
Her true true, But also like he hasn't done anything
in a while, and also like there's things I like.
I like what he's doing, but there's something where.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
I'm like, what's happening. Something's weird here?
Speaker 3 (11:47):
Yeah, with him, Like I'm like, is there gonna be
like a mystery with this guy?
Speaker 1 (11:52):
I don't remember. Maybe, but I don't. I feel like
he just can't well, I don't know. Maybe they do.
Do they ever got this? I don't know? Again more spoilers.
I don't remember if they get this thing off feet
or what.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
I can't quite remember all that so great questions that
we just don't know.
Speaker 1 (12:07):
Well, we're heading towards a finale, so that would be
a good time for that.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
Yeah, I know, isn't that crazy?
Speaker 3 (12:12):
By the way, how fat the show just moves it
really moves along.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
Yeah, yeah, so weird. What did we not talk about?
Speaker 1 (12:22):
We talked about Julia and Joel, And here's the thing.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
I love every second of it, even though I'm heartbroken
for her and she's trying so hard to make that
little one just everything to her and all her fill
all her voids.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
Side note, do we think Julia, do we think Erica
Christiansen broke her wrist in real life?
Speaker 3 (12:45):
Oh my god, thank you for bringing that up, because
I would have forgotten.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
No reason.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
No, and that cast.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
So like on matt Lock, which I'm watching, there's an
episode where Jason Ritter does the whole John Ridder Pratt
fall falls down the stairs and he's got kind.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
Of this like.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
Contraption on him. I mean that that was a fake
contraption he had. She's wearing a cast.
Speaker 1 (13:08):
Yeah, it's a full cast. Oh here it is Erica
Christenen brook arom in a cycling accident in twenty eleven,
and so they incorporated it and made Julia.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
It's fine, cool, great, I'm.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
All for it, better than I'm trying to hide it.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
Then I forgot.
Speaker 3 (13:21):
I felt like the cast disappeared, though at one point
I didn't even stop noticing it. My thing was it
was the meltdown and when Zeke says Joel, like, what's
going on? Yeah, yeah, yeah, to me, they have clearly
the best marriage.
Speaker 1 (13:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:41):
And also Joel has the best relationship with Zeke and
Camille of any of the spouses.
Speaker 1 (13:48):
That's true, that's true.
Speaker 3 (13:50):
He is totally in that family. Maybe it's because he
lost his mom, but they are. He is to me
the most not a in law, he's.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
Very in Yeah. They trust him, they know that he's
a guy they can count on and take care of
their daughter. And they're going to be so too.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
I think so too.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
I liked earlier when it's same storyline, but earlier Juliet
tell us slipping and telling Sarah that Amber didn't get
into any colleges.
Speaker 2 (14:16):
Pretending she's okay not being able to have a baby.
I mean, it's all just sort.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
Of like yeah, yeah, yeah, I like that moment.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
Right, They're all trying so hard, which is what everybody does.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
We all do that, and then I'm fine.
Speaker 1 (14:29):
Sidney, He's like, how many things do we have to
do together?
Speaker 3 (14:33):
So I kind of love her because she's sort of like,
we're already doing the other thing.
Speaker 1 (14:39):
And once again, at the end, Julian and Joel are perfect,
and I got weepy again, they are you When he
says like them, I've always wanted to go golfing with
you or whatever he says right at the end, I
was like, oh man, he always knows what to say.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
That guy is the best.
Speaker 3 (14:57):
I wonder if I loved him so much on Handmade
Tale because I had remnants of Joel like in my
body where I was like, I love Joel.
Speaker 1 (15:04):
Yeah, and here's the thing.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
Here's the thing about him on Handmaid's Tale.
Speaker 3 (15:09):
He is ultimately a really good guy on Handmaid's Tale,
doing the right thing by everybody.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
M h.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
Even though sometimes he has to make some choices and
he likes Serena a bit much, and Serena's you know,
Serena's complicated whatever. Different episode of listen if you want to.
But he's the thing I like about Joel and on
Handmaids Sale. So I'm assuming it's Sam the actor complex.
(15:39):
It's not one note ever with him.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
No. I think it'd be hard for him to play
a scumbag too.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
I think so too. He can't he can play now? Yeah,
I agree. I got to see what else he's done
because I really like that guy.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
Very good actor, very good portrayal. I give this episode
a nine point eight.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
You know what, I think I'm gonna raise that to
a nine. No, not point five?
Speaker 1 (16:01):
Okay, I word five? All right?
Speaker 2 (16:03):
Still solid, really really good.
Speaker 1 (16:15):
Are you ready to play our game? Oh?
Speaker 3 (16:17):
Yes, okay, hold on, I gotta get ready, ready, ready, Okay, I.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
Have six final bonus round grouping.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
It's hard because I did so well last time. Okay,
I'm ready, and I don't. I wonder if I wouldn't
be good at giving the clues. But we'll maybe one day,
we'll try that after we play for a while.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
On the Jackie Ramas. Help with that one.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
But yes, now it's me and you doing this. You
are Betty White to my I'm the contestant.
Speaker 1 (16:39):
Right rreckt. I have one through six? Which one would
you like?
Speaker 2 (16:42):
Oh? Two?
Speaker 1 (16:44):
Okay, number two? Here we go. Okay for twenty five
thousand dollars sixty seconds on the clock. Please, Here is
your first subject. Go the appliances, the refrigerators, a kitchen,
ice cream, ice, things that are cold.
Speaker 2 (17:05):
Things that are frozen, things in the freezer.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
The the ice caps, things that are water frozen, things
that are wet, things that are frozen, things that are
water warm, ice things that are wet. Things that are water, no.
Speaker 1 (17:25):
Summer pass okay, uh, an appliance, a charger, things are
plug in, a basketball.
Speaker 2 (17:35):
Things that are orange, things that are around.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
A rubber ball. Things that bounce, uh, a kangaroo, a dog, cat.
Speaker 3 (17:44):
Things that jump, things that bounce, things, things at oink,
things that a kangaroo.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
Oh, an airplane, things that fly?
Speaker 2 (17:56):
So sorry wait wait, still do the others because I
need to know. So what was the one.
Speaker 1 (18:02):
With the ice things that melt?
Speaker 2 (18:05):
Oh? Boy, maybe did you say the polar ice caps?
Speaker 1 (18:08):
I didn't say Polari said the ice caps. That's what
I was going for.
Speaker 2 (18:11):
Okay, Now with the one with the.
Speaker 1 (18:13):
Last one with the piggy and the cat and the
kangaroo and the airplane. Uh, I don't know what else
I could have said? That hot things that have a tail.
Speaker 2 (18:25):
Oh my god, I don't.
Speaker 1 (18:27):
Yeah. Well, but we added up, you got seven and
fifty dollars, and you're again to take another challenger in
our next week.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
