Speaker 1 (00:00):
I am all in again. Let's you. I am all
in again with Scott Patterson and iHeartRadio Podcast. Hey everybody,
(00:23):
Scott Patterson, I am all in Podcast, one of them productions.
iHeartRadio Media. iHeart Podcast. Season two, Episode thirteen, A tisket
A tasket with the one and only, luminous, world famous
Easton Allen. Welcome today to the podcast. He's a huge
(00:44):
Gilmore Girls fan. He's a host of our incredible spinoff podcast,
I Smell pop culture, and boy do we ever we
smell even deeper when Easton is at the Rains and
he interviews singers, artists, movie stars, cultural icons that were
referenced in the show. I'm thrilled to have you back.
As we dive here into season two, episode thirteen, Easton Welcome.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Thank you, Scott. This is such a thrill. I'm so
honored to be here. I love baskets. I'm just having
the best time with.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
This episode of the Baskets are great, aren't they? Yeah?
All right, here we go. The synopsis stars Hollow Charity
Picnic Basket Auction. Laurel and Rory face unexpected competition for
these baskets. Jackson refuses to bid on Suki's, prompting a
communication reset, while Rory and Lorelei clash over you Guessed
(01:36):
it Jess until Emily surprisingly backs. Laurel I directed by
Robert Berlinger, written by the one and only Amy Sherman Palladino.
Laurel's picnic basket, she finds out that Miss Patty is
keeping a photo of lorele in a wallet so she
(01:57):
can set her up with guys. Random guy, so Patty
sends laurrel I a bunch of pictures and resumes of
potential men. Laurel I recognizes the men bidding on her
basket from the photos Patty center. She runs to Luke's
and demands he bids on her basket. One of my
favorite scenes so far of the Luke Lorelei category. Luke
(02:19):
and larele I share a romantic moment. And that's what
I want to ask you about, is that it should
it be Luke Laurel or Laurel Ion Luke. It's always
been Luke or Laureli, but some people say Laurea ion Luke.
What's that about? Easton? I mean, I think respectfully, we
should probably be saying larel and Luke. You know it
doesn't it doesn't have the same rhythm. It does not
because Luke's that single syllable and rhythm, aren't we We
(02:39):
certainly are. Yeah, we're not going to change it, Luke
Laurelaw's scher omanic moment. While eating lunch together. Luke tells
Laurel I he is actually enjoying this, but then Dean interrupts. Okay, Easton,
where's miss Patty finding all these men?
Speaker 2 (02:55):
I was curious about that too, that the guy that
stood out to me that she had for LOURAI was
the guy who had seen Ghostbust one hundred and twenty
four times, because I have done that, and I like
to think that if a guy like that can find love,
then any of us can.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
A lot of eligible bachelor's and starts hollow. I had
no idea.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
I'm wondering if she's going to surrounding villages the trit
So who did Laurla.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
I really want to buy her basket? I mean, she
tells Luke she used her basket to get men to
do home improvements for Is that really true? What do
you think? Yes?
Speaker 2 (03:27):
I mean I think she's she wants to use it
as a way to connect with Luke.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
I think there you go. Yeah, and she ultimately does.
I mean, she really connects with Luke R Yeah, she
really forces And Luke tells Laura one day she will
have the perfect man bit on her basket. Why why
doesn't Luke think this can ever be him? Or is
he just playing game? Is this just Luke playing games
a little bit? You know?
Speaker 2 (03:54):
I I I think it might be because I because
Luke is a confident guy. But I don't know if
Luke has visualized the true potential that could happen between
him and Laurrelai at this point. So you know, I
think Luke is looking for love at the bottom of
that basket just as much as Lauray is.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
Oh No, I think he does. I think he thinks
the true potential all the time. And I think he's
he feels his only shot is to be aloof and
distant and detached and cool. That's that's so cool. He's
trying real hard to be just like not caring, and
I think that sort of convinces himself into at times
(04:35):
actually not caring. Yeah, Like at these opportune moments, he's
like so casual, laid back, he's sarcastic, he's dismissive and
it works against him, you know, but it's but it's
the game he's playing, so you know, it's a nice
scene between Louc and Laureless. It's really perfect until Dean interrhus.
(05:00):
If Dean didn't interrupt what do you think would have
happened next? You think you think there would have been, Hey,
you want to go out on a date? They have
They haven't been out on a date yet, have they? No?
Not not yet. Yeah, we're still dancing around each other.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
I mean, I like to think that it would have
progressed to that point if Dean hadn't gotten in the way,
as Dean's apt to do at this point.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
I wonder in the writer's room on the storyboard, they
had a postcard up there and said, Okay, in the
middle of the scene, Dean winds here. I know.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
I'm watching this whole episode, and I'm like, poor, I
feel so bad for Jerry. Like all he does is why,
Like he just winds constantly, right, he's yeah and huffing
and puffing.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
Oh no, And I'm just like it makes me sad
for him, right, yeah, I know, and he commits to it.
He's good at it. Yes, you know, let's talk about
Jess and Dean. This is a heating op, isn't it.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
Uh. Jess runs into Dean and roaring in the grocery store.
He's always there. They're about to kiss and kiss again,
there's Jess, and Dean tells Roy how much he hates Jess.
I mean, he's really just becoming uncorked at this point.
Rory tells Dean it's a waste of energy and it
would be easier if they just got along. Don't you
(06:14):
love hearing that when you're in the heat of your hatred?
Justin Dean go back and forth bidding on Rory's basket.
Jess outbids Dean, paying ninety dollars for it. That's Jada
ninety bucks man, and that's a lot of money to
a kid. Oh yeah, Jess and Roy share their basket,
share her basket, her bracelet Dean gave her falls off
(06:37):
at the bridge, Oh, the bridge over troubled waters. I
called the Simon and Garfunkle bridge that I pushed Jess
off of into the troubled waters. And he notices it
fell off her wrist. Jess finds it, snatches it, puts
in his pocket. He even gives it the old movie
he round his fingers. Yeah, but to do it? Do
(07:04):
you think that Rory made the right decision? Did she
have to share her basket with Jess, even if it's
a tradition, or she wouldn't it have been great just
to say, you know what, No, yeah, here, here's your
money back. I'll pay your money back. That's my man,
I know what you're doing. What's going on in Hooterville.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
I know we love Jess. I'm so anti Rory in
this episode. I think every decision she makes is the
wrong one. I think she was wrong to do that.
I don't like I know it's tradition, but I just
think given the circumstances, she should have not done that,
or yeah, given the money back, or just said I'm
not going to share this basket.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
With you, right yep, So it's not going to happen. Yeah,
that's what every guy wants. By the way, all your
girls listening out there, this is what your dudes want. Yes,
you know what, pal, I'll pay you the ninety bucks.
I'm not going to lunch. This is my dude f off. Yes,
right exactly, it's im messing with my dude. There's a
(08:06):
time where you got to stand up for the relationship.
Roy didn't do it. No, guys should be friends. Oh
it's okay, I'm going to go have lunch with him now.
I mean, wow, she wanted to spend time. Yes, she
really did. She did.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
He really hooked her in with that Charlie McCarthy reference.
She was like, Oh, man, if this guy can talk
about a ventriloquist from the fifties, I'm there.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
It's really not a fair fights in that regard. But
I mean, being a stand up kind of guy metric,
I think Dean. You know, Dean's a better dude, all right. Yeah,
Ess paid ninety dollars for her basket. How does Rory
not see that? Jess likes her. I mean, I mean
(08:53):
she sees it, right, She likes it. She does. She
likes having this.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Guy clearly look at her and trying to get her attention,
screwing with her boyfriend.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
And then Dean does just the boner move of all time, right,
you know, he goes to her mommy, he complains talk
about self immolation. Yes, it just come on, guy, don't
(09:25):
do what he did it.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
He did it?
Speaker 1 (09:29):
Oh jeez, Yeah, that's that's the thing. What do you
think about that move?
Speaker 2 (09:34):
I mean, again, every everyone in this episode is making
bad decisions, which I generally like to watch in a show.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
I love watching people just do the wrong thing. It's entertaining.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
But oh my god, man, like you're going to her
mom like this is so humiliating, and then it's just
and then like you know, now now Laurala is involved,
she this is going to drive away between her and Rory.
It's I don't know. And again, Rory's doing the wrong thing.
(10:06):
But but Dean's handling it poorly too. He should have
just confronted Laura and Jess, or sorry, Rory and Jess
about how he's feeling.
Speaker 1 (10:13):
She would have gone to her mom. Takes a long
time to learn how to just say, you know what,
have fun, Yeah it does, bye, and then become remarkably unavailable. Yes,
he's just getting put through the meat grinder, this kid.
Oh yeah, I mean, this is just bad. They're just
(10:35):
they're just his character's just dying right now.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
Why do you.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
Think Rory feels the need to be nice to Jess.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
I mean, I think that Rory likes the attention from Jess.
I think I think also, I mean, she and jes
connect intellectually a lot, like the they like the same
books that they clearly have a lot in common.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
I I think.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
She feels bad for him to a certain extent, but
mostly I think she just likes him and she likes
the attention. I don't think she like feels like I
have to be nice to him. I think she enjoys
hanging out with him. Yeah, yeah, you know, they do
sort of.
Speaker 1 (11:17):
It's easy for her to have a conversation with him, yes,
you know, it's it's and they're gonna teach She's going
to teach him about Hemingway or no, she's gonna learn
about Hamingway. He's going to learn about Anne Ryan Hyan Rand.
I don't think her politics are terribly difficult to understand,
so I'm kind of scratching my head, you know. Anyway,
(11:39):
I guess for a sixteen year old, it's a big mystery.
All right, Let's get to Jackson and Suki more bad decisions.
(12:02):
You know. Jackson is laying it on really thick, like
do you want me to re up my lease at
the end of the month, And Suker says she doesn't
see why he shouldn't. Why on it's nice apartment time,
and uh, you know, it's a little weird that she
didn't pick up on his uh crestfall and countenance. Is
(12:22):
that a phrase?
Speaker 2 (12:23):
Yeah, yes, yes it is and properly used. Uh yeah,
it's where she didn't pick up on that. But then also,
like he is he expecting her to read his mind?
I don't know, it's pretty obvious what he wants. But
at the same time, come on, man, just like just
say it. You don't why are you playing this weird game?
(12:45):
And then he then he continues to play the game
with the at the basket.
Speaker 1 (12:49):
Auction right, yeah, he doesn't bid on the basket and
souctioned off, and that upsets Suki. And you know, she
never considered moving in together, she says, And then she
apologized to him that she was thought about living together,
but she doesn't want to ruin their relationship. Yeah, you know,
(13:10):
it's not on her, it's on him, right, Yeah, it's
on him to like just make that move, just bring
it up. This is what I want. And he finally
did yeah, which was which was great. He buys the
basket from Kirk for two hundred and fifty bucks, which
was an hysterical scene. Twelve children.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
Yeah, finding out that Kirk has twelve brothers and sisters
is a wild reveal.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
Right, that's a wild reveal. And then Jackson proposes to Suki.
She says yes, great, scene, tears in her eyes. She's
gonna marry the vegetable guy. She's gonna she's gonna she's
gonna be healthier whole life. It's gonna be great. So
Kirk is a little said that he is is he
(13:56):
doesn't have anyone else to make a basket for him,
not even his own mother. Is there anyone who stars
hollow for Kirk? You think.
Speaker 3 (14:05):
So far?
Speaker 1 (14:06):
I don't. I don't know. I don't know who could be.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Kirk is such a unique guy and he needs a
very special person, and I don't know if that person's
in the stars hollow for him at this point.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
Here's my question, why have we never seen his twelve
brothers and sisters? Yes? Where are they? I mean, can
you imagine the fun the casting department would have casting
twelve brothers, Kirk brothers and sisters all.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
Yes, I wanted to see that. I also really wanted
to see you get a look at it. When Kirk's
sitting on the bench kind of pondering his basket, but
I want to see more of the pretzel basket. So
he made the basket out of pretzel and.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
Filled with goat cheese, and I thought them was so
exciting and I wanted to see more of that. Kirk
always leaves us wanting more. That's his way, right, But well,
there's your spinoff episode. There's your spinoff show. It's Kirk
and his brother's sisters, right, Yeah, twelve's company. Twelve's a crowd,
(15:14):
all right. So Jackson and Suki went from not living
together being gaged wid they are taking it too fast?
Speaker 2 (15:21):
Yes, yes, I also thought that Jackson's little beanie bothers
me and is like his little hat ye crazy swinging
the wrong the other direction. I mean she was obviously
down to live with him. Uh, take it, take it
a step.
Speaker 1 (15:41):
At a time. We don't have to get married here.
That's I thought. That was just crazy to see that happen. Well,
if Suki hasn't about living with him, you think their
marriage is going to work out? No? I mean, you
know people that want to get married and move in together.
It's it's kind of like a slam dunk. I mean
it's like yeah, yeah, there's no doubt, right, and it's
(16:04):
gonna work exactly.
Speaker 2 (16:07):
But no, I think I don't think this is gonna work.
I don't think he should have proposed. I don't think
she should have said yeah. Like again, if she's not
jumping at the chance to live with them, why is
she saying yes to marrying him.
Speaker 1 (16:18):
I don't like it all right, now, let's get this
is my favorite storyline in the episode, Laane and her
mother Lane and Henry, and I liked it. Henry, you know,
battered her away and said, listen, you know, I'm just
this isn't gonna work. It is silly, and it was
so heartbreaking. Right, So, her secret plan to share her
(16:40):
basket with Henry without her mom knowing, obviously just fails.
He lets her know that he just wants to date
a normal person without sneaking around, and he can't blame
the guy, right, yeah, and then he and then he
lowers the bone. He tells Lane he asked somebody else
to the prom, and she furious with her mother, and
(17:02):
this is when it starts getting interesting. You know, this
was one of the funniest scenes because Emily.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
Said, a doctor, I.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
Damn, it's so good. But man, these two. What a powerful,
powerfully acted scenes these two have. Yes, it's just fantastic.
The work is sterling, the writing is fantastic, the situation
is so relatable. Absolutely, I really think that, you know,
(17:43):
Lane is telling an extremely important story. These two are
telling a really powerful story. And it's one of the
highlights for me of this entire show is when these
two go head to head. Yes, or any scene with
Lane or and her mother in it, no matter who
else is in it, it's going to be incredibly satisfying.
(18:05):
Oh yeah, did Lane self sabotaged this relationship with Henry?
I mean, if he's a perfect man, why didn't Lane
tell her mom about him? I don't think she's self sabotaged.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
I think that even though Henry is everything that her
mother would want, she still is so apprehensive about introducing
any kind of man to her mom that that's just
something that's going to be giving her so much anxiety
and seeking her mother's approval, even though this is a
slam dunk way to get it. Still just like I
(18:41):
don't want to have that confrontation. That's what I think
she's avoided.
Speaker 1 (18:45):
But then she was afraid Mom's going to approve of him,
and I'm gonna hate him, yes, exactly, So I can't
you know, Yeah, where's the drummer in me? The rebel
in me? So so here's the question. Do you think
(19:05):
missus Kim is going to save the day get Henry
to contact Lane again? Can I hear? You know? I
don't know. I'm curious. Yeah, that's an.
Speaker 2 (19:14):
Old move for missus Kim, it is to insert herself
that way.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
But I mean, I hope she again. That moment you.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
Describe when she's like a doctor is Korean like everything
that you could see. Yeah, you can see how close
she was to perfection.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
I think she was. She will I loved it if
she did love to see a doctor. Emily's so good,
She's so funny. She's so funny. All right, So this
is the closing scene. This is at the Kim house,
(19:53):
and we just talked about all this, and Missus Kim
is so shocked. She's kind of shocked and thrilled at
the same time. And and now we go to Friday
night dinner and attentions between Laurela I and Rory are
really high. We've never really seen them like this before.
So they're fighting about Rory's friendship with Jess, and Emily
tells Laura I she agrees with her parenting decision to
(20:18):
try to keep Jess away from her daughter. And this
this was also a great scene in Richard's study when
she goes in and and can we talk Rory, you know,
and it's like she tells Rory she trusts and respects
her judgment about Jess. Does the app complete opposite of
what her mother recommends her doing. Yes, Oh my god,
(20:41):
you agreed with him? I'm so sorry. Yeah, I know.
Is this the first time that Emily's agreed with Laurel
about a parent parenting I mean I think so at
this point, I don't recall him. Major moment, Yeah, big moment.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
So it's obvious why this freaks or a lie out
so much. I mean, it's like, this is not what
you want to hear. This is what she wants to hear.
Why do you think Rory decides to call Jess instead
of Dean at the end of the night. So that's
like the page turner aspect of the writing.
Speaker 2 (21:16):
It's like, oh, yes, I mean, because at this point
Rory hung out with Jess on the bridge. They went
and got pizza and like shopped and walked around. Rory
is out on Dean. She is, in my opinion, she
is out at this point.
Speaker 1 (21:33):
She is.
Speaker 2 (21:35):
Je The allure of Jess is too strong, She's too interested.
The way Dean's been acting. How could you not be
turned off by that? And she just she wants more Jess,
She's got it. She wants to talk to him more.
She wants to be around him more. Right, which is
not you know, a bad thing to do with you're
in a relationship with somebody else.
Speaker 1 (21:55):
Listen, young fellas out there listening to this right now.
If you're high school guy and you're somehow listening to
this podcast, if this happens to you, take the hit, yes,
and don't scream out because the enemy will hear you
screaming and they will kill you. Do not react. Just
(22:20):
take the hit, smile, wish her well, have a nice time.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
Bye bye.
Speaker 1 (22:28):
Yes, that's your only move, because that's going to really
help out your reputation because the entire school is going
to be watching for your reaction. And if you don't care,
and you continue to act like you don't care and
you just move on, that's power. It's hard to do
as a young man. Yes, that's probably impossible. That's the move.
(22:55):
That's the move, and that also makes for a great
scene in a television series, you know, take away the whining.
That's still like good television. It's almost film, right, Yeah,
anyway it is. That's my boomer advice. Doll you spring
chickens out there, take note. Listen when Scott Patterson talks,
(23:17):
he speaks wisdom. Everybody. You'll thank yourself later. Take the hit.
Look how many times Easton, how many times you been
in that situation? A few? Yeah? And did you take
the hit? I took the hit the h not.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
Yes, I did, and it always kind of worked out,
not because of maintaining my pride, but mostly because I
just really just.
Speaker 1 (23:38):
Didn't want to deal with it.
Speaker 2 (23:39):
It was worth I took the hit out of avoidance,
which you know I dealt with later in life.
Speaker 1 (23:45):
There's almost a world where you should thank thanker. Yes, yes,
and thank god I found out now exactly because think
about this first would be if it kept going right,
what if we ended up marriage? You did it during
the marriage. Yes, Then it's hard to take the hit
because then you really take a hit in your bank
account and you you lose your house and the whole
(24:08):
What is this like? You know she still has a
box of my pencils. What am I gonna do? Yeah?
What assets are you dividing up? At that point? That's
my eraser. Just take the hit. Be cool man, be
a little Fonzie, Be a little Fonzie. Yeah, put on
your leather jackets, lick your hair back, and just go
(24:31):
to collar up. Hit that juke box. I have a
nice Let right, take care And it's really your only
shot that she's gonna circle back around. Yeah, because that's
that's the thing that's going to be on her mind.
You you young fellas out there. You know, she'll be
thinking about that and you and your non reaction while
(24:51):
she's on the date with mister dreamy eyes. Right. It'll
drive her crazy, it'll eat it. That's the way to
do it. And then you get all your power back
with or without her. It's wonderful anyway. All right, all right,
I think, uh, what do you think Jess and Rory?
They have more in common? Oh yeah, what do you think?
Speaker 2 (25:11):
Absolutely, without a doubt they're more in common and this
relationship could be pursued from a more responsible angle. But hey,
that's that's how young love works.
Speaker 1 (25:22):
Yeah, you know, and she stays with Dean. It's you know,
it's a it's a pathway to bored him. Yep, maybe happiness, right,
you never know. Yeah. I think with Rory's mind, it's
it's a pathway to bored him and frustration. And I
think with Jess it's a it's boy, that's a disaster
waiting exactly. She'll have fun, It'll be a roller coaster, right,
(25:47):
that's right, man. What would you do if Roy was
your daughter? I mean, let's say you and Laura l A. Marrick, Okay, right, Yeah,
you're not Christopher, you're Easton. Okay, so it's Eastern and Laurel. I.
It's not Luke and Laurel. It's Eastern Laurel. I. Yeah.
And he stayed together, right yeah, and Laurela, I mean
(26:10):
Rory was your biological daughter. What would you do? And
I knew this was happening, Yeah, the Dean, the Jets,
the whole thing. Yeah, I would.
Speaker 2 (26:19):
I mean I would tell her you are acting inappropriately,
you're acting responsibly. You need to think about the feelings
that you have, and you need to follow those feelings
and break up with Dean. You need to end things
the Dean immediately before you can move on with your life. Yes,
(26:41):
it's the car. Change the license.
Speaker 1 (26:42):
Plate to UH to Roy loves Jess. Yes, drive the
man crazy. Yeah, that's what I tell her to do.
Speaker 3 (26:54):
Oh my god.
Speaker 1 (26:55):
All right, well I think we solved it. Yes, And
I don't mean to put you on the spot, but
I you know, I know how much you are on
your feet. Yeah, Sosh, you the good stuff anyway, Easton Allen,
Ladies and gentlemen, round of applause. Thank you so much, Scott.
This has been such a blast. You got to come
back real soon. I know you're very busy in your
global superstar at this point. Are you doing a tour yet?
(27:18):
Are you doing a stadium tour? Arena tour yet? You know,
we're working on it.
Speaker 2 (27:23):
We're working on arenas first and then we're gonna go
up to stadiums. We'll probably do Wrigley at some point.
But yeah, you know, it's it's a it's a wheels
or in motion.
Speaker 1 (27:32):
We'll say it's all happening. Yes, all the best man,
congratulations and all your success. You're natural. Thank you so much,
Scott and uh best fans on the plant keep those
cards in let are coming, and where you lead, we
will follow.
Speaker 3 (27:48):
Stay safe, everyone, everybody.
