This is one of Tara and Suzanne’s favorite episodes of the series, could it be because we are weirdly rooting for a breakup?

Dean is flying off the handle and it makes us wonder – did everyone start disliking him at the same time?

Plus, we want to hear from you, what would you have done in Rory’s situation, would you have had your date with Jess?

Speaker 1 (00:00):
I Am All in again.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Oh it's just you.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
I Am All in Town meeting with Suzanne French and
Tara suit An iHeartRadio podcast. Hey guys, welcome back to
another episode of I'm All in Town Meeting with myself, Tara,
and Susanne.

Speaker 4 (00:29):
Hello.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Hello, Today we're talking about season two, episode thirteen, a
Tiscit a Tasket, which aired February fifth, two thousand and two.
And I loved this episode.

Speaker 4 (00:42):
This is one of my favorites. It's just so good.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
I forgot how good it was, Like it's a it's
been a minute. I think I haven't seen this one
since our rewatch last time.

Speaker 4 (00:52):
Yeah, I don't think I've watched it for a while either,
And it was it was just fun to sit and
watch it again.

Speaker 5 (00:58):
There's just a lot of good stuff going on.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
Yeah yeah, yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
And with everything going on with like Jess, I'm just like,
I mean, it's messed up right, like she's basically falling.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
Out of love with Dean and falling in love with Jess.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
But you're like.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
Weirdly rooting for it. Oh yeah, I am.

Speaker 5 (01:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:17):
I think because they've done a good job of making
us start to not like Dean as much.

Speaker 5 (01:24):
Like he's just.

Speaker 4 (01:26):
Whiny and he flies off the handle at everything, and
so it's just kind of fun to watch these early
steps in the conversion from Dean to Jess and Rory's
completely in denial and she's like, but it's the rules.
It's like, oh, come on.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
It makes me wonder, Like, I mean, I did watch
the show in its original run for the most part,
but I don't remember.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
Like week by week being like, oh my god.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
So I kind of wish, like I wish we could
go back and see how if people like felt the
same way about Dean, because right now we're kind of
binging it in a sense.

Speaker 5 (02:05):
Right, Well, I mean, I guess kind.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
Of we are doing a week by week, but like
we know what's coming.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Yeah, but like, did everyone feel the same way that
you started to dislike Dean? Like did everyone start disliking
Dean at the same time?

Speaker 4 (02:18):
Yeah, that's my question. Yeah, that's a good question for sure,
because it is it does hinge on how they how
they developed the story over time.

Speaker 5 (02:30):
And yeah, first in the first.

Speaker 4 (02:31):
Run, nobody knew how that, you know, how Dean and
Rory We're going to play out, especially when we get
into like season four and stuff.

Speaker 5 (02:39):
So yeah, so that's a good question.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
I will first and foremost say I did not see
the clown pillow this episode. But I didn't see the
Grandma cookie jar.

Speaker 5 (02:51):
Oh I didn't even notice that.

Speaker 4 (02:52):
But you're right, I didn't see a clown pillow. I
wasn't paying attention to the to the Grandma cookie jar.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
Actually, Weirdly, the reason why I saw it is it's
the scene where they're in Rory's room and laurel Ie
talking to Rory like after she comes home and stuff.

Speaker 4 (03:08):
Okay, like near the end.

Speaker 3 (03:10):
Yeah, near the end, and there is a shot of
lorale I standing in Rory's room, but it goes to
the kitchen.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
At the back and it's like, weirdly in the middle
of the shot. Like I was like, it took me
a second. I was like, what is I was like,
oh my god, that's the cookie jar.

Speaker 3 (03:24):
So it's like smack in the middle, but like in
the distance, in the like in the back. So that's
why I I was on the hunt for the clown
pillow because I thought maybe it'd make an appearance in
Rory's room.

Speaker 4 (03:33):
But oh yeah, yeah, they didn't spend a whole ton
of time at Loraliz's house in this episo. So I
did notice another can of Hanson's soda.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
Yeah, when she's at the picnic with Jess. She Yeah,
the Hanson's was listen the product placement. They really paid
for that. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (03:55):
And there was also a giant display of Oberto beef.

Speaker 5 (04:00):
In the market.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
I noticed the cheese balls on the shelf. Speaking speaking of.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
The market, I would like to point something out. Every
time we're in the market, everything is so weirdly organized,
like why was the glue next to food?

Speaker 5 (04:17):
Right?

Speaker 4 (04:17):
I did notice that in the middle there were like
post it notes by the glue, and then there was
like a box of crackers.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
Crackers. Yeah, it was like they started with a R.

Speaker 5 (04:26):
I think it was weird.

Speaker 4 (04:27):
But then there were more crackers on the wall behind
them all these soda bottles and then more crackers.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
It was yeah, yeah, there was water bottles in the backs,
like it's Dozi's markets organization makes no sense to me.

Speaker 5 (04:40):
Well, and it's.

Speaker 4 (04:41):
Different every time we scored. It's like do they take
everything out after they shoot the sea?

Speaker 5 (04:46):
Like why have to?

Speaker 1 (04:47):
I'm sure they have to.

Speaker 4 (04:48):
Yeah, they're constantly like because.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
We're not in the market.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
Every episode so it's like every four up four or
five episodes, maybe we get a scene in the market
so they have to fill it. But yeah, I'm always
just like, who strategically placed the glue next to the crackers?

Speaker 5 (05:04):
Yes, exactly, yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
Yeah, but the cheese, the cheeseballs really made me. They
were the Planter's brand, Yes, use balls, and I really
was craving like Cheetos after seeing that.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
And some of them were.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
I'm pretty sure unless I was losing it I watched
this last night. I'm pretty sure like some of them
were upside down, like there was something where like one
of the packaging was upside down.

Speaker 5 (05:25):
I'm pretty sure I didn't notice that. How fun?

Speaker 1 (05:27):
And if I got that wrong, never mind.

Speaker 5 (05:33):
I'm curious.

Speaker 4 (05:34):
One thing I would like to hear from our listeners
what what would they have done in Rory's situation? Like
should Rory have gone with Jess or should she have said, Hey,
you know, I have a boyfriend. This doesn't feel appropriate
to me. I'm gonna go I'm not gonna go with you.

Speaker 5 (05:54):
Like what.

Speaker 4 (05:54):
I'm just curious, how because I see a lot of
people say, oh, she should have gone with Jess, so
she shouldn't have gone with Jazz. I'm just curious what
other people would have done. Yeah, well, it was a
hard position for her to be in.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
Definitely for the listeners, definitely let us know in the
comments on Instagram when we post about it, what you think.
But I went both ways, so I was thinking the
same thing. So Rory is very like she is a
goody two shoes. She doesn't want to let anyone down.
So for her, she's like, well, I have to he

(06:26):
paid for it. There is no rule book of you
have to do this. And there was even a comment
I don't remember exactly what it was. There is something
that Laura l I says where it kind of alluded
to the fact of like you didn't.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
Have to go yeah, and.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
It's I think it's the way she worded it, like
like again, there's no rule book. Right then, I was like,
she wanted to go because she wanted to get like
this was her excuse to spend time with Jess.

Speaker 5 (06:54):
Yeah, Like I.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
Think she's been very curious about him. But if I
were Rory, I probably would not have gone, yeah, out
of like respect to Dean, even if there was something
going on and I wanted to break up with him.
I would have a conversation with Dean about our relationship
with Sad being like, pizza.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
I'm gonna go with this guy who definitely has a
cry on me.

Speaker 5 (07:16):
Yeah, I agree with that.

Speaker 4 (07:18):
I think initially when they were still at the auction,
it was a hard position for her to be in
because the two of them were both standing right there,
like looking right at her, like.

Speaker 5 (07:27):
What are you gonna do?

Speaker 4 (07:29):
And I kind of felt like that anxiety. I felt
bad for her in that moment, and I think she
was curious about the whole just thing and the fact
that they had the picnic lunch. But then they went
and got pizza and went to the bookstore after, like
that's not about the rules anymore.

Speaker 5 (07:45):
Like that was a decision. Yeah, oh yeah.

Speaker 4 (07:49):
I could see it from both sides, Like I get
that she's like kind of curious about Jess and I
think she was in some denial about it at that point,
but at the same time, like it was hard on
Dean too to just leave him hanging like that.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
I did feel bad for Dean this episode.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
Usually I'm like, oh, Dean's been kind of like a jerk,
you know, But no, I did feel bad for Dean
because at the end of the day, like he can
see her slipping away and he knows that and now
we are really seeing it, and you're kind of like, again,
Rory's too nice, so and she wants to follow the rules.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
So because mind you, how much should he end up
paying for that basket, like eighty ninety?

Speaker 3 (08:26):
I think, yeah, ninety, Okay, if someone paid ninety dollars
for my basket, I gotta give Rory some credit. I
would go to that lunch too, like someone spending that
money on a basket with some like crappy whatever she made,
you know what I mean, Like yeah, but when she
called him at the end, I was like, you, yeah,

(08:47):
did not need to because she called with zero agenda.
And then he kind of was like, oh so the book,
I'm reading it, and I'm like here we go.

Speaker 4 (08:56):
Yeah, she didn't call Dean, and that again was a choice,
Like she knew how upset Dean was and she chose
to call Jazz instead, So off we go.

Speaker 1 (09:07):
And I did. I did kind of agree with.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
Laura I in the sense of like just defending Dean
and all that, because again, Dean did nothing wrong, like
he was going with the plan. You know, he was
gonna bid, but the poor guy had did not have
ninety dollars to bid.

Speaker 4 (09:25):
Right, right, And maybe he shouldn't have gone to Laurai.
That might be a little weird, but yeah, like he
was panicking and he was, you know, upset that at
what he sees happening in front of him, and he
was concerned that, you know, Rory was going to get
into trouble.

Speaker 5 (09:41):
So I can kind of understand that.

Speaker 4 (09:42):
And he doesn't really have like any other close friends.

Speaker 3 (09:45):
Well, and I was gonna say, and I don't think
he can go to to Lane, like Lane's not like
a friend. I mean, usually in this situation you would
go to like the girl's best friend and be like, hey,
I'm having a rough time, but like Lane is so
closed off because of her, and I guess we can
kind of go into that conversation. She's just not the
one you can have that conversation with.

Speaker 5 (10:06):
Right right exactly.

Speaker 4 (10:07):
And I thought it's funny that you mentioned that because
I thought as I was, because I watched the episode
again right before we got on Zoom, and I thought
about it. I'm like, you know the stories, so Lane
and Rory start out at the auction together and then
Lane's cousin buys her basket and then Lane leaves, so

(10:29):
that everything that was happening with Lane and.

Speaker 1 (10:33):
Henry chose happening at the same time, and everything that was.

Speaker 4 (10:36):
Happening with Rory was happening in parallel, and neither one
of them knew about the day that the other one
was having.

Speaker 1 (10:42):
That's a good point.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
I knew, I knew it, like, but I didn't put
two and two together.

Speaker 4 (10:48):
Yeah, And so when Rory calls Lane at the end
of the night and missus Kim was like, oh, she
doesn't she's not feeling well, you know, because Lane didn't
want to talk. Rory has no idea why. She doesn't
even know that Lane is upset. And then you know,
vice versa. Laane doesn't know all this craziness that went
on with Rory either, So it would have been a
little out of place for Dean to try to talk

(11:08):
to Lane because Lane's I had no idea like what had.

Speaker 5 (11:12):
Happened that day. So it was it was an interesting.

Speaker 1 (11:15):
This was the first time I was like really annoyed
with missus Kim.

Speaker 4 (11:19):
Yeah, I agree, I thought the yeah.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
Like mind you, I know, she's intense, But I was like,
Laane is a good kid. We all know that she's
not going to like get knocked up, you know what
I mean. Also, like the fact that after all that
she found out that he was exactly like what she
would want to set Lane up with. Was it like
going to be a doctor and this and that?

Speaker 2 (11:42):
And yeah, I thought.

Speaker 4 (11:53):
It was weird that that Lane was the missus Kim
even let Lane participate in the basket thing to begin with, Like,
why even be in it if you have to set
it up so that your cousin bids on your basket?

Speaker 3 (12:05):
Well I think that I think that missus Kim does
really care about the town, so I think that's the
reason why. But yeah, but couldn't it be like missus
Kim making the basket.

Speaker 1 (12:16):
No, actually, she wouldn't want to go sit with anyone.

Speaker 3 (12:18):
But you know, but yeah, like I think that missus
Kim is all for I mean, she's at every town meeting,
She's at absolutely everything, so she's very supportive of the town.
But you got a point, like the the whole thing
was to have a lunch with, right, Well, I guess
that's why they brought the cousin because he was going

(12:39):
to be the lunch date.

Speaker 1 (12:40):
It was all a pre planned but I.

Speaker 4 (12:42):
Mean, like the basic gist of it was to like
have I mean, it's it's a little archaic the whole
thing to begin with, like the women make a basket
for the men to bid on, and that's kind of weird,
but yeah, the whole point was like to have a
date out of it. So that's why I thought it
was weird that missus Kim would let Lane participate in
an event that is intended to find yourself a date.

Speaker 3 (13:06):
So also like what a great idea for like speed
dating or like a blind date or something, you know
what I mean, Like I was thinking, like this should
actually be a thing.

Speaker 5 (13:17):
Yeah, that's true. I liked Lorealize approach.

Speaker 4 (13:20):
He's like, yeah, I can get people to do free
stuff on my house.

Speaker 1 (13:24):
Yeah, right, what was that? What was the money going towards?
Do we know?

Speaker 5 (13:28):
I don't know. I don't know if it was a chair.

Speaker 1 (13:30):
It was an auction, but like what is the money
for just the town?

Speaker 4 (13:33):
You know, I'm not sure. If they said and I
just completely missed it, I don't know.

Speaker 3 (13:38):
By the way, I would just like to say I
had like zero call outs in this episode, so I'm
sure you do but I was just thoroughly enjoying it.

Speaker 4 (13:45):
Yeah, I only had one thing, and it wasn't even
something that you would notice as you were watching. It
was just something that I've heard before, and that is
in the scene. Well, okay, so first of all, Jackson
and Suki, let's talk about that first time. Oh yes,
I was so annoyed with Jackson for not bidding on
Suki's basket, Like he was so mean wishing her because

(14:08):
she didn't understand his cryptic renewing the least means.

Speaker 5 (14:12):
I want to move in with you?

Speaker 4 (14:13):
Like, how could he possibly be mad at her for
not knowing what he was saying?

Speaker 1 (14:17):
It clearly knew that she didn't understand it.

Speaker 3 (14:20):
It's not like but no, maybe he didn't because he
like didn't under When I watched it, I was like,
she has no idea the dots that are supposed to
be connected.

Speaker 5 (14:28):
Right exactly?

Speaker 3 (14:29):
He really he realized that she wasn't connecting the dots,
So like, why are you gonna get mad at her
when she didn't understand what you were asking?

Speaker 1 (14:35):
And this is.

Speaker 4 (14:36):
Exactly exactly that just annoyed me about Jackson. I mean,
it had a good outcome because now they're getting married,
but I was so annoyed with him for making her
feel bad and just he was just playing with her
like I didn't.

Speaker 3 (14:50):
Also, you know, that's the best basket of all the baskets,
so like, either.

Speaker 1 (14:54):
Way for a good cause, you're getting a great meal.

Speaker 4 (14:57):
Yeah, yeah, exactly, and ended up costing him two hundred
and fifty eight. But the one thing I wanted to
mention in case anybody didn't already know, this is the
scene where.

Speaker 5 (15:11):
Everything is resolved.

Speaker 4 (15:12):
They're eating the picnic basket and that when they decide
to get married. That scene was actually shot at night
and it was split to look like it was daytime.
And I can't remember where I heard that, And it
might have even been when Jackson Douglas was on the
podcast the first time.

Speaker 5 (15:32):
That might have been where I heard it. I have
to go back and listen to that episode.

Speaker 4 (15:35):
But yeah, that scene was shot in the middle of
the night, and if you look in the background in
the trees, you could see it's like all black behind them,
but they lit where they were sitting.

Speaker 3 (15:45):
To like sometimes I can tell by certain lighting, Like
there was one scene specifically in this series. It's when
Laura I and Rory are standing in front of Harvard.
The way the lighting was was like, this is like
a set and there was like I could tell it
was a set with like lighting and not natural light

(16:08):
because it was something I have to go back, but
it was something with the way the light was hitting them.

Speaker 1 (16:11):
I was like, this isn't natural light? So interesting?

Speaker 3 (16:14):
I didn't catch that this time, but I.

Speaker 4 (16:16):
Yeah, there's another one, and I can't remember which episode
it is where it's another it's Lorel and Rory and
they're outside Lorelei's house and you can tell that they
had to shoot it in two passes because one of
them is inside and one of them is outside, and
it's very clear, like the lighting is very different. One
of them was on the sound stage and one of

(16:37):
them was standing at Lorelei's house on the Warner lot.
It's very obvious that it wasn't shot at the same
time because the lighting is completely different. I can't remember
what episode it was, but I know that I'm sure
someone will tell us.

Speaker 1 (16:51):
There probably was pickups.

Speaker 5 (16:52):
To be honest, yeah it probably was.

Speaker 4 (16:56):
But yeah, I didn't really have any other call outs either.
I thought it was just was such I was just
enjoying the episode so much.

Speaker 3 (17:03):
It was well, we were also like mainly in the town,
so like there wasn't really anything.

Speaker 1 (17:10):
Also, I do think that it's interesting that after.

Speaker 3 (17:14):
The Richard heavy episodes that Richard wasn't in this episode.

Speaker 5 (17:20):
Oh that's true, that's true, right, Yeah, it was just.

Speaker 1 (17:23):
Like he's unemployed.

Speaker 3 (17:23):
I mean, they did give him a reason. Where was
he he was at? Where did Emily say he was?
He was at something, he.

Speaker 1 (17:32):
Was something where he wasn't home.

Speaker 3 (17:33):
But I'm like, okay, so now he's busy all the
time with unemployment.

Speaker 4 (17:38):
Yeah, I guess maybe after filming that stretch of episodes
he needed to go home.

Speaker 3 (17:42):
Was he was he doing any other shows while filming
Gilmore Girls? Uh?

Speaker 4 (17:49):
You know, I don't know enough that I know of
off the top of my head.

Speaker 5 (17:52):
I'd have to look that up.

Speaker 3 (17:54):
They're like series are are Emily and Richard considered series
regulars or are they reoccurring? Uh?

Speaker 4 (18:02):
They I would guess they're probably series regulars.

Speaker 1 (18:05):
Yeah, because I wonder if like because Richard.

Speaker 5 (18:09):
Or I can't think of it.

Speaker 4 (18:12):
Ed Herman had the special credits like special special guest star,
like he had the special credit in the opening, So
I'm sure they.

Speaker 3 (18:20):
Were, But I just wonder because like, there are a
lot of times where we're like, we haven't seen Emily
and Richard for three episodes, you know, like or specifically
ed Herman.

Speaker 1 (18:28):
We sometimes get we get Kelly more than Ed.

Speaker 5 (18:32):
Yeah, that's true.

Speaker 3 (18:34):
I guess I'd have to go back on IMDb and
c if like anything came out. But I'm sure he
was doing other projects in the middle.

Speaker 4 (18:40):
But you know, yeah, I know he did a lot
of like, uh, narrating audio books and stuff like that,
so he could have been doing that stuff on the side.

Speaker 1 (18:48):
Too interesting.

Speaker 4 (18:49):
Yeah, So yeah, all around, a strong episode, very great episode.

Speaker 3 (18:55):
All right, So the next episode we're gonna be watching
is season two episode fourteen. It should have been Lorelei
and off the title, I don't know what this is.

Speaker 4 (19:04):
I do you want me to give you a hint? Yes,
this is the one where we meet Sherry.

Speaker 3 (19:09):
Oh okay, yes, man, just a lot of big episodes
in season two.

Speaker 1 (19:15):
I didn't realize these were all season two.

Speaker 4 (19:18):
This one aired February fifth, so February sweeps probably.

Speaker 5 (19:22):
Oh yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (19:24):
Also, it kind of makes sense that the episode the
basket one was close to Valentine's Day.

Speaker 1 (19:30):
They probably like, did that.

Speaker 5 (19:32):
Yeah, that's true. I didn't even think about that.

Speaker 3 (19:34):
You're right, Yeah, but you're but sweep sweeps make sense
while we're hitting, getting all these bangers back.

Speaker 5 (19:39):
To back right in the middle of the season.

Speaker 1 (19:42):
All right, Well, we will see you next week.

Speaker 4 (19:44):
Meeting adjourned.
