Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey Christy, Oh hey Will, how are you? I'm good?
Are you? Because you look like you're fumbling around there
a little bit? No, what is wrong with me? I
don't know. I'm good. I'm really so good. And I
love to see your face because I love to see
your face too. We can see each other's faces. I

(00:22):
feel my face is big and red, if that makes
any sense. I like it red. I have a green
screen behind me, so that actually takes away red in
my face. But I'm just hoping what they're going to green?
What people are gonna then green screen behind you is
my giant red face, which you'll be awesome. Now it's this,
it's my leg lamp. It's my leg lamp gives me

(00:43):
my red face. My lamp from Christmas story, Oh my god,
the real talk right now. They already have Christmas everywhere
a Target. I took my girls to Target. Don't I don't.
Don't get me started, and like I was, like, we
just want to you have a Halloween decorations, you know,
kind of like a little museum, and it's always Christmas.

(01:04):
Oh my gosh, that's my theory. It's so early. It
gets anyway. I don't want to be a grinch. I
guess Oh, I'm totally a grinch. I'm totally bah humbug Christie. Absolutely,
Can I ask you a question because we were kind
of talking about this a little bit beforehand, and then
we'll get into our guest, who's awesome. We have an
amazing guest today and we're gonna get to that. But
there has been some controversy in the v O world,

(01:26):
controversy which seems to be just unavoidable everywhere you go. Now,
can we talk a little bit about Chris Pratt and
and Mario what's going on? But like, like catch me
up with what's going on with that? Absolutely? I saw
Mario already a big thing of Mario, so they're definitely
like throwing it out there for people. He was in
target Um and it started to get me thinking about

(01:47):
what was going on with Chris Pratt. Right, So basically
a trailer dropped and it revealed Chris's voice, Okay, as Mario,
but I feel like it began and ended with that.
He didn't try to infuse any kind of originality to
the voice, and so there's a lot it's just Chris Pratt.
It's Chris Pratt and he's but it's just Chris Pratt.

(02:09):
It's not Chris Pratt putting on a funny voice. It's
just Chris Pratt. Well, I kind of wonder and it's like,
no shade to a list celebrities who get these you know,
multimillion dollar deals um with probably lots of back end
because they have tons of leverage, which when you think
about an average person who would infuse that role with

(02:30):
tons of nuances and you know, stuff like that that
was original to the Mario that everybody knows and loves
and wants. Truly. I mean, maybe this is an unpopular opinion,
and of course he got the job right, so he's
got the last laugh. But well, those people don't get
those people don't get back end right. But again, this
is what what I've been talking about forever, is that, Okay,

(02:53):
so most people don't care that it's Chris Pratt. If
you're watching an animated movie, you want watch the best
animal animated movie you care, you can't. It doesn't matter
that it's Chris Pratt, exactly. They're not. Your kid is
not sitting there going wow, Chris Pratt really nailed that part.
And we're backing, you know, I'm I'm banging, you know,
bashing on Chris prattice because he's in the news right now,
But you could insert any celebrity. This has been happening

(03:16):
for years. Actually, and again I'm not saying a list
celebrities should not do animation. It's a ton of fun.
It's an amazing acting form. It's something that every actor
should try. It's it's incredible, it's wonderful. But Bradley Cooper,
Bradley Cooper did a great job with the Raccoon and
Guardian with Rocket Raccoon. There you and there are. There
are a ton of a list actors that come in

(03:37):
and they give it there all, but would the part
would Mario have been better if there was an Italian
actor that came in and did it like Mario? That Okay,
so you've never heard of this actor? Is that gonna
you're gonna have? I know, it's my opinion that that's
everyone's like, there's a controversy he didn't put on an
Italian accent. Well, if Chris Pratt puts on an Italian accent,

(03:58):
there's going to be even more of a controversy. Well,
how do you figure that out? Will you figure that
out by hiring a great voice over actor who's an
Italian voiceover actor. And the fact that nobody knows the
guy's name, who cares as long as is done, well,
you're mari well and I have to I have two points.
So one is I think that this rests in the

(04:18):
hands of the directors pushing back um on, you know,
to the studios and saying hey, guys, you know I
very I feel very strongly about you know, if you
need an a list person, let's do our best to
find somebody who is the best fit for Mario. And so,
of course we we never know what else is going on.
I have really we don't know Chris Pratt is part

(04:39):
of an executive producer on this, Like I really don't
know that. Or again, we're not bashing Chris Pratt. I
like Chris Pratt. I think Chris Pratt is great. You know,
Guardians of the Galaxy phenomenal movie. Nailed that role. You know.
I I'm strong Guardians of the Galaxy. I'm star Lord
on the show. So I you know, I have to
follow CHRISTI do your best. Chris Pratt. No, but see

(05:02):
that's the thing I didn't do, Chris Pratt. I couldn't
you can't follow Chris Pratt by trying to do a
bad Chris Pratt impression. You just have to make star
Lord your own. That's what I had to do. So
star Lord is essentially me. He's a little bit more animated,
but he's just call me star Lord. He's me because
I couldn't do Chris Pratt. But Chris Pratt. I'm not
bashing Chris Pratt. I'm bashing the industry that says it's

(05:26):
more important to get an A list celebrity for an
animated show than it is to get the right person
for the role. Absolutely, and this is this is and
it's also tough because you know, we hear at, I
hear voices. We really are very inclusive and we love
our fans so much and we want you guys to
be a part of our contest that's coming up. And
we also want you to know that you know, we
know how passionate you are about being a part of

(05:47):
this whole world of animation and voice acting, and like,
there are tons of opportunities that are out there and
there you know, there's more and more every day, um,
but we like to set precedent about that inclusion and
like so that that's just kind of where we stand
with it. So well, no, it's yeah, and again, to me,
inclusion is is hugely important. And we've all, especially in

(06:08):
the voiceover world, you've all done roles that you look
back at now and say, I, you know, if they
were casting that now, they should not cast me. We've
all done that because we've all been in a room
where there's the same ten of us and a role
comes up and then they animate it and they make
it a different ethnicity or sometimes even a different gender,
and it's like, oh wow, I probably shouldn't have done that,

(06:29):
but you don't know that going in, so it happens.
At the same time, we are to a place now
where Chris Pratt shouldn't be playing Mario. Sorry, it's not
it's there's there go you can't go find a great
Italian actor that can go and do Mario. I mean,
why why not? Um So, it's it's one of those
things where we have to get up and and I've

(06:50):
said this before and we've talked about this with a
number of our our guests, where again, a list celebrity
should absolutely do voice over. It is a ton of fun,
It is amazing easing. Uh it is such a pure
form of acting that they need to experience it. But
you should also put on your shoulders a little bit
of responsibility of if I'm going to do this, at
least fifty of the cast has to be regular voice

(07:12):
over actors, because you can't you can't just be taking
acting roles from the people that have made this their living,
which is what us voice over actors. That's what we've done.
We've made this our living. So uh, yeah, that's my
two cents. I it's there's oh, there's a controversy a
day now in the world. Everything's controversy. Everything can be

(07:32):
a controversy. This is one of those things that just
kind of seems a little stupid and they just missed
it was just miscast. I like Chris Pratt, not Mario.
But anyway, speaking of amazing actors, boy do we have
one today. She is the voice of everything. Uh and
somebody that I've known for a while, going on twenties

(07:53):
something years now, she's Yeah, you've been saying her name
a lot because she's so good and we've worked together
so many times. I think the first thing I worked
with her together on was a show called Secret Saturdays,
which we talked to love that showed. It was a
great show. It was one of my one of my
underrated shows. Like if I had a list of underrated
animated series, that would absolutely be on the list. Um,
but yeah, this is uh, we got a great one today.

(08:16):
So who's joining us? It's Carry Wallgren and I'm very
excited to have her on the show too. Oh my gosh, Basis. Hey,
Hi Cary. I'm so sad though that I missed the
I missed the window of opportunity when you guys were
doing it in person. Yeah, did like three days worth

(08:40):
of shooting with it was so fun, beautiful set. It
was great. I'm sure it was so nice. But yeah
for joining us. Hey, it's lovely to be here. Um,
you know, welcome to my basement. Yeah, is this your studio?
This is okay because we I love seeing everyone's studios.
Well every time we of a guest come on. Generally

(09:01):
it's where you know, we get to see where they
are actually recording from when either auditions or their home records.
It's not like super fancy. I mean there's the microphone
over there. Lighting, lighting, That lighting is so nice. At
least it doesn't look like a kill Room like Troy
Baker's Here you Go. It actually kind of it kind

(09:22):
of does if you see it, because like all of
the walls and the ceiling are all soundproofed, so when
you walk down into it, it's like inviting, and yet
there's something very ominous, and then as you go back
into the corner where it's most soundproofed, it's just very

(09:43):
blair Witch like standing wow, like sc scream all you want.
No one's going to hear you. Yeah, well, we've wanted
to have you on since like we started. We were
just talking about that finally. Yes, yes, you didn't give
up on me everything ever, never never, we were talking

(10:06):
about So I was trying to tell Christie that I
think the first place you and I met, I think
was Secret Saturdays. I think it was too Yes, right,
It's was Secret Saturdays. I think because we had dietrich
On not too long ago, and and we got into
a whole Secret Saturday's thing. Because I still put that
up there as one of my like, uh favorite cartoons

(10:31):
that I've ever done. That didn't kind of get the
recognition that I thought it was, right, is it? And
isn't that interesting? Like I have shows like that too,
where they never quite took off, and yet they're kind
of sentimental favorites are like, oh that's the one that
got away or ye away, but you know, just like
never never got the respect. Yeah, okay, well then I'm

(10:53):
going to jump in right there. What's your one? What's what?
What's the if you had to pick one that you're
like that. I loved that and it didn't get the
respect that this which one would be? Um? I always
wanted Symbionic Titan to go longer. Okay, good show. I
was on that. I think, Yeah, I I ended up
playing this this cheerleader Kimmy, and they had she like

(11:18):
she like started developing some substance and she like kind
of started falling for this this one of the robot
guys who like and and there was a dance. Okay,
if you look up, you gotta do the voice. It's
not all that interesting. It's just so you're here to
help me with my math homework. Okay. But here's the

(11:41):
thing I remember about that show. If you google Booty Shake,
Booty Quake, there was an animated dance that Kimmy does
to try to get this guy that she doesn't know
as a robot to do her math homework for her,
and I do not know how they ever got that
past the sensors. Woke Booty Quake. It's the most erotic

(12:02):
animated dance thing I've ever seen done on a I'm
googling it right now. Yeah. I would also say to
our listeners be very careful how you google that. That
seems like that could be a mistake. Yeah, you might
want to throw some bionic Titan in there as well, exactly.
That might be the best way to narrow down the field.
Oh it's shake It, bake It booty Quicket. Sorry, shake

(12:26):
It Baked Booty Quicket. I just google it, you know,
bake It booty quake it. Okay, this episode of I
Hear Voices brought to you by Shake It Baked Booty
Quaket different. Wow. Okay, so we jumped way ahead. Let's
go back to not worked. You're a kid, You're you're

(12:48):
a little kid. What do you watch? What do you do?
What do you what are your animated go toos as
a kid? Okay, Well, I definitely drank the Disney kool aid,
so it was Disney Princesses all the time. I could
recite those movies front words and backwards and act them
out in the living room, which I did you know,
Christie was bell on Broadway. That's you were. Yeah, It's

(13:12):
just another reason I love you. Power for good Christie.
I did. Listen, I'll tell you what I did. Okay, guys,
I'll tell you what it did. So I have a
little bit of stage fright. You know, I don't sing
a ton or I'm just maybe out of practice and no, no, no,
but I don't really sing anymore since becoming a mom.

(13:34):
But but they had a fairy tale um theme this
week and my girls, she's um, she's five, and it
was fairy tales and so I had I had happened
to volunteer to come in that week, and I brought
my blue dress from Broadway. So I had my blue
Broadway bell dress that they gifted me. After I did
the show, and i'll wrap it up. I sang for

(13:57):
the first time in like years to the kids, um,
Beauty and the Beast, and I showed them and I
even have a dog like a clincher, and I had
like props that I brought in and I gave each
of them roses that the little girls would and boys
would give to me as a gift. So it was
a full circle moment for me. So I did. I
tried to use my power for good. Cary, I promise

(14:18):
in front of five year old isn't it if the
rose dies the guy's dead too something like that. Yes,
he's a body. Right, we're going to let you know.
So your question, did you slay? Oh? I slayed so good.
I did, And I even posted it on social media,
so double win. I got the content and the kids. Alright,
I apparently need to stop you more. I need to

(14:41):
stop you too. It's gonna happen because but don't stop
will because well it's not on social media things to
google there today we've got Christie's uh and the quake
Booty Shake. Okay, so you drank the Disney you love

(15:06):
Disney stuff growing up? What else? Yes? Um? I also
when I got a little bit older, it was all
about Batman, the animated series. Interesting, what a what a pivot?
That was huge? Okay, you know because I remember watching
a lot of things growing up. I mean the Disney
thing was it was a big deal just because it

(15:27):
was something that you know, it was back in the
day where there was one release a year, and that
was like an event. Well my family, like we would
wait for that and it would be this big event
to go to the new Disney movie or you know,
like when you're much literaler and Sleeping Beauty is already
out in snow white and everything. So you know, I

(15:48):
was drinking the kool aid really early. Well, what I
find interesting about that car is that, like your voice,
you have such a range, right, and so the voices
that we hear, especially as little girls, and like the
feminale entity of the Disney princess Cannon like voice was
that inspirational to you? Over time you think like maybe
that's a part of oh yes, your brain. Yeah, I

(16:10):
mean you know, uh definitely, uh yeah, Like you know,
everything in me just wanted to be that sort of
sweet and what I wanted to sound like that, and
I kept hoping that when I hit puberty, I was
going to look like that too, and it never happened.

(16:31):
So so you you gravitated towards the princesses then and
not the bad people, because we've had some people on
that are like I was all about Ursula like something
like that where they wanted yeah I was, No, I
was all about the princess because there was just something
about and this is you know, this is very shallow.
But like I, I they were so pretty. But is

(16:54):
it shallow? It's not. There's something magical about that. You're
magical about it. And you know for me, like I
had the Dorothy Hamil haircut like I and for everybody
out there who's too young to know what that is,
you just imagine the Mark Camel haircuts a bowl. Yeah,
imagine Mark Camel and Luke. You just imagine putting a
bowl on your head and just hunting. Are they do

(17:17):
you like that? Do you know? It was very chic.
I just didn't pull it off, Christie, No, I didn't.
I didn't put it. So it was just like the
awkward Like I, it was just one awkward phase after
another as I was a kid. But then so maybe

(17:37):
that's what like the dark side started kind of creeping
in or something. And so by the time Batman the
Animated Series came around, like I was, I was just
just jaded nothing and that was what did you like about?
So because Batman the Animal Series is to me is

(17:57):
the game changer of animation. Yeah, I mean, you know,
they stopped printing on white paper, they started printing on
black paper. Andre Romano came in and started to record
it like a straight radio play. It was all about acting.
Nothing was Andrea a friend of the show. She said
that she got rid of everything they called puky. So
it was like, you know, a newscaster used to be

(18:20):
this just in and we're here, and that was how
they do cartoons. And somebody would sit down and do
that and she go, no, no, no, I don't want it, pukey,
do it like a newscaster. So everything became very real
and that resonated with me. Is that what it did
for you as well? That same kind of feeling exactly
it was? It was exactly that that it visually, it

(18:42):
took it into a different dimension. It sounded realistic. It
was scary. I remember the Scarecrow episode. It's a Scarecrow
episode being so scary like so, and I liked being
frightened as a kid, you know, like I was reading
Steve and King way too young and you know, things

(19:03):
like that. So why so the Dark Streak like it
satisfied all this animation and uh, you know, scary storytelling
and just high stakes steaks. And it was so and
Kevin Conroy, I mean and Kevin, you can't. I mean
Shakespeare for kids right there, it's it is. It is
Shakespeare for kids. That's what we said. That's actually a

(19:25):
perfect way to put it. And and just this is
a forgive me if you guys have heard this story before,
but like one of my favorite stories going along with that,
you know, because people are always like, well, how did
you get into voice acting? And I was like, I've
been obsessed with cartoons since I was little, and it
was very much on my radar. Like apparently, when I
was five, I told my parents I want to be
the I'm going to be the voice of the Disney

(19:48):
Princess someday. You're the first. You're our first guest to
say as a kid you wanted to be a voice actor.
Everybody else found it later. That's so funny. So apparently
when I was five, my parents my I said I'm
going to be the voice of the Disney Princess, which
years later I got to play one of Ariel's sisters
like the third Little Mermaid movie. So I feel like

(20:11):
it counts like she was that count You're also, i
would say, you're probably still doing pretty well in your career.
I'm guessing not happening in the future. They haven't kicked
me out of town yet. But but the other thing
is that you know, this continued, and so I'd be
recording my voice on cassette tapes and things like that,
and I would start mailing it out when I was
like eleven and stuff like that. I'd start mailing into places.

(20:34):
And when that Man the Animated series came out, and
I was so excited about it, Like we were one
of those families where dad would clip out articles and
put them up on the refrigerator. There was like that
was the lead up, the excitement lead up to Batman
the Animated Series coming out is that we would post
these articles up about it on the fridge. That's how

(20:56):
people used to post things on the that's true, friend
years old exactly, And kids, for all you out there,
a newspaper is the thing that used to be delivered
to your home that contained news, actual news exactly. Well.
I would rush home after school to watch Batman the

(21:16):
Animated Series and I would watch the credits and Andrea
Romano's name would always pop up, like voice direction and
casting by Andrea Romano, and I was like, this woman
is a genius. I need to write and tell her
that I'm moving to Los Angeles and that she does
a really amazing job. So I actually went to a
bookstore and I looked up the Warner Brothers, like, I

(21:37):
looked up her in a book. It was Likes in
Los Angeles. Yeah, yeah, And so I wrote her this letter.
And I think I was in eighth grade. Uh, maybe
ninth grade, but I think it was like around eighth grade.
And I wrote her this letter, and I was just like,

(21:58):
I just want you to know that you do in
a amazing job casting and voice directing for for Batman
the animated series. You're so good, and I just want
you to know that I'm moving to Los Angeles one day,
and I really hope that we get to work together,
and I look forward to meeting you one day. And
I mailed it off and and I don't think she
ever got it. Oh no, well, you've worked with her,

(22:19):
you've worked with her having you. So that's the thing.
Like fast forward, I get cast as charm cast on
Ben ten and I walk in to the first session
and Andrea Romano is sitting there and I can never
tell this story without like getting the big lump in
my throat and like all these years later, like trying
to cry about it. So I just looked over and

(22:42):
I saw that she was there, and we introduced ourselves
and stuff like that, and I'm just like walking into
the studio, going, don't cry, don't cry right now? Did
you tell her the story? Did you tell her the story?
You know? I feel like I may have, like some
time later. I didn't tell her that time because I
was like trying really hard not to cry. Sure, sure, sure, yeah.

(23:03):
We've all had those moments in our career where it's
like I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna cry right now, right
and and and it's totally like it's still to this
day makes me emotional because it was such such a
full circle thing all those years later. And and I
think maybe way down the line, I said, well, you know,
I wrote to you a letter when I was a kid.
I don't think you ever got it, but I sort

(23:23):
of I don't think. I like, probably we need to
tell andre so momentous and then to actually all those
years later get to do to get to work with her,
you know, I was to get to work with her
a lot and stuff. That was That's what that's that

(23:45):
same thing happened to me because I was such a
Batman the animated series fan that when they called to
say do you want to audition for Batman Beyond? I
was like, why would I do? There's no point of
that happening. Um. And so then having the first show
I ever do is Andrea directing me and sitting next
to Kevin for three years, I mean it was like
it was that same thing of just especially we did

(24:07):
return to The Joker and I'm in between Kevin and
Mark Campbell for two weeks. I was like, I'm just
gonna keep my mouth shut because the second out of
my mouth, I'm gonna be fired. It's like I don't
belong here. Um. So it is that same kind of
amazing legendary you're working with those people, you're working with
the people after you are. When you got that audition,
you had something ran through your head that You're like,
why would I do this? You were you had some

(24:28):
doubt about it. Of course I had to. I'd never
done it. I've never done voice over in my life.
So the idea that I was going to go and
do the next show after Batman was then they went
to Batman and Robin. So the idea that it was
gonna then be still the entire crew and all the
same directors and animators and same voice director, and Kevin
still like I had no I had no shot. I

(24:50):
had no it was out of your league. You thought,
oh yeah, I had no idea. I also didn't know
I was gonna love voice acting as much as I
did it. I've said this to people where I started
at I was now twenty two when I think when
I got beyond one something like that, and I was
already getting jaded as an actor. I was on a
sitcom along running sitcom. I've done films, and you start

(25:12):
to get jaded, and then you forget why you're there.
And then you do something like an animated series that
you love and you get the butterflies in your stomach
and it's just pure acting again, and you're like, oh, this,
this is why I do this. This. So it's that love.
And I see, Cary, I see that with you almost
every time I record with you. Is you still have
that we You still a true voice over actor, still

(25:35):
has that. I'm just so happy to still be here
kind of it's it's so true and and it's weird
because like the the longer, I'm I'm in it. You know,
there's there's still a couple of franchises that I haven't

(25:57):
broken that, you know, I haven't cracked that nut, and
it almost hurts more So who who so what are
they come on? We always asked that question. We always
asked dream jobs, who would you be? Because I know,
for instance, you're an enormous wonder woman fan. I'm an
enormous wonder woman fan. And I did get to play
her once you did, so check that off, right, I

(26:18):
checked that little box and it was it was you know,
it was nuts. It was it was just well, I'll say,
like like the woman that was playing her was was ill,
and so I just stepped in. So it wasn't like
the best circumstances, and so I I've always sort of

(26:38):
tried to play it down a little bit because it
was you know, her thing, and but but for my
own personal little uh satisfaction, it was just like yeah, bucket, Liz. Yeah.
But Masters of the Universe never never backed that nut,

(26:59):
And they did, you know, couple of these remakes and
I'm like, Pela Doll, what Evilyn? So which one would
you have taken? If they offer you both roles, but
you can only have one. Who do you be? Dang? Yeah,
this is the quandary because Tila would have been in
more episodes, but you're still thinking like an actor alone,

(27:25):
So like, we gotta eat. I think I just Evilyn
Is was pretty awesome though, I mean, she was just great.
I don't know what something forgive my ignorance on that one. Man.
Oh yeah, by the power of grace coming back. I
thought that was coming around. It's coming and going. It's

(27:46):
one of those kinds like g I Joe where it goes,
but it's never quite as good as the original thing.
So who all right? So, so mash is the universe?
Is there any anything else? So? And and and by default,
like Shira, sure, I'm just going to lump them all together.
That that is just the I have. Wasn't Isn't Mary McGlenn,

(28:08):
who's one of your good friends and bandmates, didn't she
direct Shira? Wow, we got to talk about Car's beautiful voice,
and we're gonna we're gonna get to that. But can
we bash Mary McGlenn a little bit? Our our friend,
our amazing friend Mary, who is like my D and
D sister and I love to death um, but sheer,
Oh my god, you're in a band together and she

(28:30):
doesn't cast you in Shira. I mean, listen, I know
that there there are other powers to be that these
things have to be clear. Hi, but it's Chris Pratt.
Chris Pratt as Shira. We were just talking about the
Chris Pratt, the whole thing that just happened with Chris Pratt.
But we will Chris Pratt Mario the whole the whole
controversy with him as Mario, where he comes out. I'm

(28:52):
gonna have to read about this. Basically, he just didn't
do a little. He doesn't sound like he did anything,
just Christ as Mario. So the question then becomes, why
do they not Why do you cast an a lister
to just be Chris Pratt is Mario as opposed to
like a voice over actor who's Italian who can make
Mario sound like Mario man? And that's crazy because that

(29:13):
never happens, Like they never cast a listers and wolves
that they're unsuited for. Fine that you are being sarcastic. There,
you're right still on fire. We were talking about the
problem is that most children care about the voice actor,

(29:35):
and the most kids sit in the in the theater
saying I'm not going to see this unless Chris Pratt
or some a lister is voicing the carrots, right, because
I I've I've been in theaters and the kids next
to me are like, oh, that's the guy from Community. Okay,
exactly exactly. Thank god Will Smith played that fish, or
no one would have captured right, That's right, Yes, Sarah Strong.

(29:59):
I saw her on Twitter. Tara Strong said something, um
that was very it was very meaningful. And she was like,
she said, like us, Colin um, like you know, makes
millions and billions of dollars for different franchises for over
twenty years Hollywood. Colin doesn't care, you know what I
mean in terms of like that. So she did post that,

(30:22):
and I feel like it had it had about three
thousand tweets, retweets and whatnot, and so I do think
this is something that does affect our voice over community.
And it does because Chris Pratt tweets the sandwich and
it gets three million. That's the tricky thing, Like the
jaded part of me gets it. But but so visibility wise,

(30:49):
is it how how important then? Is this visibility or
is it or is it more or less up to someone,
like I've said in our intro, like the director to
kind of advocate for the journeyman or the people, the
other people. I don't think it matters. I don't think
it matters visibility, doesn't I I honestly, oh gosh. I

(31:14):
mean it's tricky because like, on the one hand, I
can go down the road that is very jaded and everything,
and then there's the other part of me that's like,
you know, that doesn't really help to be jaded. Jaded
jaded helps everything. I mean that's how I look at, Well,
here's t sense you do. I would say it's actually
up to the A list actors. And what I always

(31:35):
say is I think the A list actors should do
voice over because it's a ton of fun. It's an
incredible exercise in acting that maybe they're not familiar with,
so of course you should experience it at least once.
It's a wonderful way to get back to the basics
of just acting. Totally understand that, and I would advocate
for that all the way around. That being said, as

(31:58):
an A list actor, they should also say, I understand
that there are people that do this for a living,
so for me to take this job. I'm going to
insist that at least of this cast be voice over active. Yes,
and and I will add to that that, uh, and

(32:18):
understanding that this is a different skill set. And I'm
going to respect the fact that this is a skill
set and come in either prepared or willing to learn,
slightly humble or even take take chances to try an accent.
Go to a speech person. Yeah, you know, because I

(32:39):
I don't know, I feel like there's you know, they're
obviously there. This is not across the board. But I
could say that a majority of on camera actors, if
they were to land some sort of on camera role
where they had to have a certain accent, or they
had to be in a certain kind of shape, or
they had marvel a certain skill, that they would invest

(33:01):
enough to do that to the best of their ability.
They would care about it. They would care about it.
So I I just the thing that my biggest pet
peeve is when you can tell that that there are
certain on camera actors that do not care or respect.
I haven't. I didn't even Oh, I didn't even look
at the script. That really do you do that when

(33:26):
you get on set? You you haven't looked at the
script for the day, I'm guessing you have, but because
you're doing an animated series, I'll read it all there right,
Like it's like, you're really gonna give the engineer a
lot of sluff for asking you to take off your jacket.
That's making a ton of noise behind the microphone attitude

(33:46):
about that, or or or the fact or the fact
that you can't turn off Mike to look at the
actor next to you to say your lines. Yeah, yeah,
it's like you can't, you can't do it. Those are
the things that sort of drive me to despair. But
but you know, trying to go back to a slightly
more optimistic thing about it. It um. I think there's

(34:08):
something to be said that that having someone like that
attached to a project can get a project made, and
then it employs a lot of people, uh that I think,
And there are some some on camera actors that come
in and are so happy and humble, love being there

(34:30):
and want Alan Tudick, I mean all that, but it's
not it's I remember one of my coolest days ever
was doing Batman Beyond, and that was the thing about
Andrea Romano's you never knew who she was going to
cast and I walk in and it was John ridder
and John Ridderd just walked over to me and he said,
I just want you to know how happy thank you
for having me on your show. I'm so happy to

(34:51):
be here. This is the coolest thing. And I remember
going he's thanking me like he's like it was just like,
what is my life? And he threw himself into the
role and he loved it. And you get actors like
that too, that are just I am so happy to
be here and this is the coolest thing in the world,
and man, thank you for having me here and it's
the best um And then you get that, Yeah, every

(35:13):
once in a while you'll get a little experience or
you'll get it behind the scenes thing where where they
get it and they're like wow that you know, the
on camera person will say with that video person really
knows what they're doing, and I you know that it's awesome. Wow,
And and those are the little moments where you're like, yes,

(35:35):
you have respect for what's what's going on. That's just
that Back to fun stuff real quick, because we're about
to do I think so as everybody knows we are.
We brought across the garden back, and so of course

(35:56):
we are gonna we get to read with a quote
unquote amateur. I mean just an actor, just an actor
who hasn't I don't like to say amateur. I like
to just say just an actor who hasn't had their
break yet. So it's gonna be very very cool, and
we've got a very cool guest coming into play with
us then across the gardens, of course, leading to our
big super surprise. It's not surprise anymore. So we've announced

(36:17):
it a few times, but are awesome uh contest, Christie,
you remember what what's the contest called? Again? No? I don't.
Oh look look Christie. Christie was just saved by the
bell because of course we were just talking about the
super awesome contest to become the next Great cons actor.
And so we have announced some amazing prizes. We've got

(36:39):
other stuff on the way, and there's gonna be more
to uh to it as we get there. Of course,
if we get closer, and you are going to be
able to hit us up, and I think it's I
hear voices at gmail dot com. Uh, so hit us
up and we can get more and more into all
the stuff that we're gonna do. But we are here
right now with our awesome to guests are amazing seen

(37:00):
Cary Walgren and of course Matt friend is here. Friend, Hello,
thanks for us. Uh now, Matt, you're you're exploding basically
right now. Thank you for coming on the show. Yeah,
this is so cool. I'm I'm just excited to be

(37:20):
here and yeah, thank you. This is awesome. So, Matt,
you have been to to talk a little bit about
Matt and we can talk about certain things. We don't
want to give too much away, but he's a comedian
and actor and impressionist. Uh an up and coming voice over,
I mean, and he's been doing a whole bunch of
stuff from I mean, are we allowed to talk about
any of the stuff you're doing it? Tell us Matt, Yeah,

(37:42):
let's talk about it. Let's get into it. So what
did you just record a very small cartoon last night?
I had a bunch of friends over. I was in
an episode of the Simpsons last night. So this is
such great timing on This is amazing. So a time
everybody out there. The Simpsons is a small show on Fox.
You can find it. I I've never seen it, never

(38:04):
heard of If you google it's about Bert Simpson and
his family. Um, yes, it's probably last very long. But
will it will hast long? The Simpsons has no foreside
into the future or anything, so no, Matt, let me
ask you. So it says it's from the information that
we have. You do eight tre gillion impressions. Yes, I

(38:27):
do a lot of what was if you had to
pull on one that you're like, this is the one
that I am. I'm I'm so good at I nail
if you close your eyes, I am this person. Who
would you pick? You know? I was actually because I
actually well, because we have a visual element to this podcast.
I was finally on his show this past week for
the first time. So I'll I think this would be

(38:47):
the fun one right here. Oh, I had to tell
you whenever you talk about doing the Howard's during impression,
to me, it's very fun. I enjoy doing it, especially
when you add this other layer of you know, the wig.
It's crazy. It's unbelievable. I mean that that's what you
had to do. That's amazing that come from Matt. Jeez,

(39:09):
I'm ready at all time, you know. And then like
a lot of party like party trick impressions would be
like uh family guy, American dad, big man. I can
hear that. Definitely. I love doing like Roger the Alien,
all those tethnic Farland bitches. Hello, it's crazy, you know.

(39:30):
Sorry to swear, but it's fun. Anyway. Did I am
I reading wrong? Do you do an impression of Jennifer Coolidge? Oh,
Cary can probably do a good one too. You can
probably do a much better one. I do this on stage.
It's just my impression of Jennifer Coolidge after sipping out

(39:51):
an ice cold beverage while sitting by the pool on
a burning hot day. And then it just oh, oh,
taste out. That's the entire and oh that's brilliant. Okay,

(40:11):
speaking of scenes, let's get into it, guys. Oh, here
we go. We got across the garden, so for everybody
joining us once again, Ricky and Mocha are trying to
get across the garden so that uh, Mocha can find
and meet her mythical boyfriend who we have never actually seen.
These are characters that Christy and I came up with
on the fly. Five minutes later, both looked at each
other and went, I wish we had come up instantly.

(40:33):
The names the voices everything about it. But here we are,
um so I will be reading all of the uh
stage directions, and car you're gonna be Sloan and Matt
you are going to be Norbourg. And here we go
fade in exterior would continuous. We come up on Ricky

(40:54):
and Mocha standing in a beautiful open field, though there's
no one else around. They wait behind a single velvet
rope with weird smiles stood on their faces. Suddenly, in
a flash of light, a giant mushroom coach pulled by
two glotten golden unicorns, appears before them. The coach driver,
a reindeer name Sloan, steps out of the driver's seat. Hey,

(41:14):
they're cats and kittens. Are we all ready for the trip?
Ricky and Mochus smile, I sure, I am. I can't wait.
You have your tickets? Ricky Motor reach into their vests
and pull out tiny little rainbows. They hand him over
to Sloan. Oh well, batchel just about cover it aboard.
They watch his steps magically appear in front of them.
The brother and sister laugh and hold hands that they

(41:35):
climb aboard. Oh my god, these are the most comfortable
seats I have ever been in. They feel like marshmallows.
They are marshmallows. Ricky Moky turn to find Norberg, a
raccoon sitting on the seat next to him. He plucks
a piece of the seat and shoves him in his mouth. Um,

(41:58):
who are you? I'm not entirely sure? Well where are
you going? Another good question? Sloan climbs into the driver's seat.
All right, my little Woodland friends, where to? I'm still
not really sure? Oh that's okay, honey, you just look
cute Sometimes not knowing where you're head it is the

(42:18):
only way to get to where you're going. Deep. So
what about you two? Um second, start to the right. No, actually,
we're going to the mall. The all it is. Sloan
grabs the two small rainbows and throws them the unicorns,
who eat them up. The unicorns take off. Ricky Mocha
Norberg watches the sky changes color around them. M hm.

(42:42):
So still on the quest for the boyfriend. Huh are
you sure he's the right one for you? Oh? How
would you know anything about it? He's my boyfriend, it's
my life, so I get to decide if he's right
for me or not. As she gets more angry, the
sky beast darken whoa okay girlfriend, not making any judgments,

(43:04):
just asking The sky starts to brighten again. Was I
going to see a friend? My family? Was I just
going for a ride? I honestly can't remember. I know
he hasn't always been there for me, but he's a
good guy sort of. You deserve better? Absolutely here here,

(43:25):
Oh maybe a ride. I should just dump his Sorry,
But although I don't think we need the saucy language now,
I definitely wasn't going to see my family. Oh well,
I guess I'll get to where I'm going when where
I'm going tells me I'm there. Good for you, and

(43:47):
as for you too, I should probably tell you that
I can't cross the barrier, so I can't exactly bring
you all the way to the mall um. Okay, how
close can you get us? What about here? Everyone pulls
on the range and coach flips upside down Ricky both
fall out of their seats and plummet to earth. You

(44:10):
gets are better. I still don't know where I'm going.
Just before they hit the ground, the screen waivers and
color and then goes black. Ricky Moka wake up, Wake
up in a field of wild mushrooms. That was weird.
Are you okay? Yeah you yep, I have some thinking

(44:30):
to do. Come well, let's keep moving. As Rakiya Mooka
walk out of the field, they pass a raccoon on
his back, yipping and rolling around in the mushrooms. The end,
good acid trip to bring everyone together. Oh my god, amazing.
You're you're so talented, Matt. You're awesome. Thank you. I

(44:52):
realized I just for some reason made Norberg my my
Jewish grandfather. I don't know where that came from. It was,
you know what we call a ringer. Yeah, exactly, spoken
like a true voice over actor. By the way, you
don't know where the voice comes from. A t sit
and you go like it was just the guy at
my bakery, like you know, you never know what the
title of this podcast is genius because I think I'm

(45:15):
sure I previous guests I've said it, but this is
what we do. We hear it's it's it's a problem.
It's like a psychological illness. It is that we found
a way to channel into a career. Yes, somehow, Thank
you so much for joining us, Matt. So wait a
second before you go, where can everybody find you? And
what's all this stuff you got coming out? Yeah, I'm

(45:35):
playing Norburg in the animated show. I hear he stole
it and it'll act. No. You can find me out
just on Instagram at the Matt Friend. I'm doing my
full hour of stand up but for the New York
Comedy Festival on November ten at the Stand in New
York and uh grinding away. Thank you for having me.
This was so cool. Thank you for joining us. I

(45:57):
can't wait till someday. Say hey, remember Matt, the guy
who won't call us back? He was on my podcast once,
remember that, Christie? Yes, yes, all, thank you so much.
Nice to meet you all, by very cool. And there's
the guy who we're all going to be working for soon. Right,
pretty great? Right, that's right? And Howard Stern better watches

(46:19):
back and I'm telling you all right, So, Kry, we've
covered a lot of the very cool things where you
came from, your your origin story, the stuff you wanted
to play. Yeah, all that kind of stuff. Where does
where is? Where is Kry? In like five years? What
are you doing? What's the plan? Oh? Man? Um, it's
always hard to think five years ahead. Um, I do

(46:42):
you know if we get back to the world being
a little bit more normal. I would love to be
doing more live theater. Okay, I dabble with the idea
of doing a little bit more bless you, You're beautiful,
Thank you so much. This is a great like love
with Gari, though it's a problem. Honestly, I'm gonna like

(47:05):
I as soon as we get off this are we
are we we're friends. Sorry, well it's happening what sorry
on certain certain sites. But I'm gonna really yep up
my game. It's alright that you're friends. Why would you
apologize to me? I think it's awesome. I love bringing
people together, which is yeah, it's not nice. Uh yeah.

(47:25):
I look forward to doing more like collaborative things. I
would say five years being with people again, being with
people again creatively, kind of just working on things together.
So so live theater. Um. I definitely want to get
the slough he show up and running again and such
a good show. It's such a good show. It really

(47:46):
is such a good job. I've seen it like two
or three times. It's great, it's involved, like there's more,
it's crazy like each time because there's this whole for
those that don't know, there's a whole like one woman
show element to it, which I only meant to just
do you in the first show. And then people are like, no,
you gotta keep telling the stories of why, of how
Slaughter came into your life. And as the show has

(48:09):
gone on and more time has passed, like more things
have happened, they're like, you gotta be kidding me. Now
this happened. Now, this happened. So uh yeah, I think
it's going to evolve into something kind of fun. Has
anyone from Slaughter seen the show? Uh, they have not
seen it, but there their booking manager came and saw

(48:30):
it and filmed it and sent it to them and
they loved it, and so they have seen clips of
the show. Have Uh you know, in all fairness, they're
a good band. But you were probably pulling in more
people than than Slaughter was at this point. Right, You
never know, but you're pack in the house. You're pack

(48:53):
in the house. If we were we actually yeah, we were,
So I don't know. I can I I could get
behind spread Slaughter Love. Heck, yes, oh I can see that. No,
it's a great show and you should check it out.
And where can people find you? Like what can you
talk about, because I know there's a lot you can
So what do you have that you can you can
tell us all about? So I believe that they just

(49:15):
announced Transformers earth Spark the the official trailer debuted at
Comic Con. Is this the one that that um Alan
two dick is optimus um? That's a very good question.
I think it might be because he told us about
this a couple like last week. And I'm Agent Croft,

(49:38):
one of the human helpers, one of the human with
mysterious agendas and is she on a good side or
not so good side? Like an Amanda Waller ish kind
of thing, going ambiguous figure and a very very fun

(49:58):
character to play. So that just literally got announced. Um
uh yeah, mind wife everything else, because I don't think
it's been announced yet. I'm doing in the new Gotham
Knights Batman game. I am playing Harley Quinn. She's doing it,

(50:18):
She's doing it, weren't. Yeah, So that was trying bucket
list sort of fun thing to get to play, and
it was a very different take on her, like they
were really specifically going in a different direction. So people
are either going to love it or hate it, and
I'm exactly um, but from an acting standpoint, it was

(50:41):
one of those really fulfilling jobs to get to play
because it was like very layered and you know very much,
I think, very timely because they're going into a lot
of uh things about Q related things that are scared okay,
got you okay? And uh So anyway, that was a

(51:04):
lot of fun. As far as where people can find me,
it's pretty much at Cary Wallgren on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook,
I think I'm the real Cary Wallgren on TikTok, but
if you do a little deep dive, it's on there somewhere.
So and I felt like with my social media, I

(51:26):
try it's I'm good, pretty private, but I try to
keep up with the with this this stuff the world. Well,
thank you so much for joining us, and we'd like
to have you back because, as we've talked about very briefly, UM,
we are doing the I keep I've never remember the name, Christie,
what's the name of the contest against um the I'm

(51:47):
gonna actually try um the it just gets worse and worse.
The super excitement. Nope, no that's not it. Um, You're
you're selling the anticipation, Christie. God, guys, this is just
the worst inside joke ever, because it's really, like you realize,
I've just not even committed to doing it because of

(52:09):
how funny I know this bit is. You know my children,
My children are running amuck. Honestly, it just gets farther
and farther away from me because every time he asked
me on every episode for the last like ten episodes,
he's asked me and it's so funny. But at the
same time, I don't think I'm helping myself. I'm not
doing myself any favors by not just writing it down

(52:30):
like the actor that I am. I remember, I think
I've changed it every time. It's essentially the super awesome
contest to become the next big voice actor. Essentially nice.
But what I want is, you know, there's got to
be someone out there who's tech savvy that can just
do like a full montage of clips of Christie not
being able to say that it'll happen any and just

(52:53):
the super awesome Oh no, this is amazing, Cary, I
think we should do that. I like to point out
that Cary just said the idol. Cary just said what
it was the first time. I don't want to rack
but unbelievable. Well yeah, so you know that we are.
You know, we'll have more about the contest coming up soon,

(53:13):
but we've already talked about the winner. Is The one
amazing thing we can already talk about is that the
winner gets a year long contract with a voiceover agent
out here in Los Angeles, which is pretty amazing. Um,
so we are giving you were cracking the door. We
are cracking the door for you to come in and
try to join us as fellow voice over actors. Like
to thank you so much again for coming Cary. This

(53:34):
is really really cool and everybody go check out carry
and all the stuff she's doing. She is absolutely unbelievable.
One of the best in the business bar none. So
thank you so much for joining us, and don't forget
if you think you can do what we do, then
put your voices where your mouth is. Thanks everybody. I
