Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome in. It is I Want Your Flex. He is
Mike Carmen and I'm Dan Byer. But here's the deal again.
Because of the holidays, Happy New Year. By the way,
Happy twenty twenty five. Mike and I got together on
Monday night, December thirtieth, as I set in for his
usual co host Jason Smith on The Jason Smith Show
with Mike Harmon, and we chatted for about four hours,
but a bunch of that information was about fantasy football.
(00:22):
Because of doing that show, we're taking some excerpts from
that meeting of Mike and myself and putting them into
the I Want Your Flex podcast for this episode now.
So if it doesn't sound as normal or you don't
hear Ian Roddy chiming in with the streaming defenses, that
is the reason why.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Yeah, Dan in for Jason on Monday night, we had
a great opportunity to talk about the Monday Night football game,
all the fantasy heroes there. We look back at Week seventeen,
Championship Week, some of the heroes and zeros, those that
led you to the Promised Land, and one interesting stat
about a player who appeared on a lot of rosters.
We also looked ahead to how to best utilize Week
(00:59):
eight and we tell you about what's available to you
for the actual playoffs.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
And we'll be back with a whole new episode leading
into week eighteen because we understand there are some championship
games and other things at stake there, so hope you
enjoy the pod. And yeah, this is all I want
your flex.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
You want experience during your football season, Well, buckle up,
sweet cheeks. We've got all the experience in the world.
This is I want your flex with Dan Bayer and
Mike Harmon. Mike and Dan break down everything you need
to set your lineups, from position rankings to starts and sits.
(01:40):
The guys help you make those hard decisions and now
let's get your flex. Ond here's Dan Bayer and Mike Harmon.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Hey, welcome back in Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith Show
with me, Mike Harmon, Dan Byern for Jassmith. We're live
from the tire Rack dot Com Studios. Moving the ball again,
down six, a missfield goal on their end and a
made field goal for the Lions, so the lead is
extended to six. Coming up on the midpoint of your
(02:12):
fourth quarter. Here Monday Night Football. It's only you know,
sixteen and a half more games, Dan.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
I know Mike's cutting him down like the calendar with
some rotten piece. So the door came up empty for
brock Purdy another interception.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
He got skunk with a trading card calendar there.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Which is good for Steve De Sager, who again is
like many sweating out a fantasy performance and Juwan Jennings
stays out of the end zone. But the flip side
of that coin, Mike Carman, is that the forty nine
ers will still have to keep throwing after this possession,
which goes against Steve de Sager. So some way that watch.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
That David Montgomery would be really huge right now, right,
get Old Knuckles back up in there, but no, he's
not available. Jamiar Gibbs having himself from a fantastic game.
So you were talking about a little bit earlier. We'll
get the fantasy notes and nuggets from from this game
as it concludes, Dan, But you know, for weeks week seventeen,
(03:14):
the mixed bag because you suddenly had a bunch of
star players. We did the I Watch a Flex podcast
leading into the week, and we had the caveat a
ton of the players going well they're saying he's going
to try to play right and then ultimately no to
a tongue of iloa. No, Jalen hurts and think Kenny
Pickett gets hurt. So even if you'd gone that route,
(03:35):
that didn't help you. And all of a sudden we
got McKee and I'm watching the trading card market of
Tanner McKee w go flying. People getting hundreds of dollars
for cards said they could have they would have sold
for a dollar fifty if someone would have taken it.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
They're getting more than the fan got for catching the
ball that AJ Brown threw into the stands.
Speaker 2 (03:54):
Yeah, I would have held out for more.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Again, once again people getting screwed. And these age the
Dodgers did it. Remember when they strong armed the folks
with the show Hao Tani deal. That was bad business.
And then you know, I'll here you get a jersey. Yeah,
keep it coming.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
And someone said so on did you see? Someone said
and a paycheck and AJ Brown tweeted it that's pretty good. Yeah,
not gonna happen.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Well, I mean it depends whose paycheck it is. How
about that? But when we look at the finals from
from week seventeen, and for many people. The year's long
been over and now they're just interested observers maybe hate
watching certain players and circumstances because of who's in the
(04:43):
driver's seat in their respective leagues. Maybe maybe you've got
that situation you just don't want somebody to win. But
we watched over the course of the weekend all those
injuries flow up and some no show efforts along the
way as well by a number of teams, where hey, man,
it's that time of year. I already saw the movement saying, hey,
(05:05):
let's move championship week to week sixteen.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Well, I'll say this, for at least of the showing up.
I've been someone who's head stocking T Higgins forever and
for the last couple of years have had T Higgins
on my teams and it has not come through. And
of course, for that reason, I'm not in any championship games.
But what do you know, and you mentioned our podcast,
Mike I said, within the last two weeks, this Chase
(05:30):
Higgins deal in Cincinnati is not Holton Bruce in Saint Louis,
it's not Harrison and Wayne in Indianapolis. It's Jamar Chase's
number one, and T Higgins is somewhere along there on
what do you know, the hat trick on Saturday to
propel anybody that may have had T Higgins in their
championship game.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
Just an insane performance, right, that was a dandy to watch,
But again owing to the fantasy endgame for it, you know,
Chase still got his nineteen points, but you didn't get
any of the glory touches correct as it were, right, Indianapolis,
no shows in a big spot, but Jonathan Taylor gave
you big points once again, as we pointed out, like
(06:11):
she looked at my scorecard a little bit in terms
of hits and misses. That we were on board there
as well. But the curiosity, you know, for some of
the would be heroes, you're left holding Cole several days
after Christmas.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Earlier this season we complained about a lack of points.
There were a bunch of points scored in week seventeen
to make up for.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
It, certainly Baltimore and Los Angeles and so many others
that we had a blast watching it. Come to fruition,
we'll get more into the specifics of the point totals,
but coming up next we talk Bowl season Bowl takeaways.
Oh and that whole cam Ward Thing. Hey, welcome back
in It's Foxmor's Radio, Jason Smit Show with Me, Mike Harman,
(06:54):
No Jason Smith to Night in His Stead by Guy
Dan Byer, The Eye Watcher Flex Podcast where you hear
us together. Wherever you get your fine audio, download it,
give it five stars, rate review it, bookmarket, send it
to your friends and family. Always a nice gift. The
iHeartRadio app as well. For all of the content you
(07:16):
get here at Fox Sports Radio, all the music, all
the podcast, all of that fun stuff. We appreciate you
being part of the extended family. Happy holidays, whatever it is,
however you celebrate. You're up and moving today. So I
think that's worthy of a victory lap as well. Not
quite the victory lap that Steve de Seger is gonna
take coming out of his fantasy title Dan Bamp, but
(07:37):
he's gonna lord that over all of us too. I'm
gonna make him.
Speaker 1 (07:40):
A cape so the only league he does as well,
I believe.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
How about that one for one? Yes, mister perfect from
the late great Kurt Hennie makes it that much sweeter.
How about that? No question about it. Week eighteen of
the National Football League season. Every year it's the consternation
because we're gonna put on our fantasy hats here for
a few minutes of whether to you whether to punt it.
Certainly after the games of Week seventeen, many quote meaningless
(08:06):
games right that we're on the schedule, And that's just
the nature of the beast. The haves that have nots
that we have in the league. Parody is a four
letter word, at least for the twenty twenty four season.
So you had a lot of games that had fantasy implications,
but certainly the teams playing in them had maybe nothing
(08:28):
to play for. Maybe you would talk about playing for
draft status. Well that didn't work because those teams actually
went out and played well and won. I'm looking at
you Giants and Raiders. But all of that to say,
I want to use every game we can, and it's
Mike cliche two seventy two. They go away, and then
you're even gonna lament not having a six to three
Bears Seahawks affair to watch by time spring training comes around.
Speaker 1 (08:53):
I am not there with you. A lot of times
we will agree on things. I am punt on Week eighteen.
If there are no playoff implications for your favorite team,
do not go down the rabbit hole of figuring out
a way to gamble or do fantasy on it. To me, Mike,
save that for the postseason. You can figure out a
(09:14):
way to still be competitive or to have fun in
the playoffs in some sort of playoff format. It'll take
you all the way. It's almost mid February now, so
just use it as a break, especially after the holidays
which have been crazy, and you've had a week where
you've had five days of football. Just take a breather
in Week eighteen. That's what I think it's all about.
(09:34):
Week eighteen again my least favorite week of the NFL season.
There's no doubt about it, because it just half the
games don't matter, and I think that you should take
a break as well.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
That's the beauty of the chaos of it for me, Dan,
is that we have no idea who's playing, who's in,
who's out, and yes, to the point of what you've
done for a full season could be a sabotage situation,
which is why it shouldn't be a standalone championship if
you're going to wrangle it into your league. But maybe
you do it for draft status, right for the draft.
(10:04):
Maybe you do it as a one week contest for
whatever there is prize money.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
League that's Steve won. There is a week eighteen contest
as well for high points. But then you're trying to
pick up all the guys that are you think are
gonna be.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
But the waiver wire comes back into play at least
for a week now. The other thing I wanted to
discuss is that we talk about the playoffs themselves. Right,
We've long held opportunities to draft and play it out
as a normal season. Well, our favorite type of league
now is available in the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
I was surprised. I didn't even realize this.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
The guillotine has been added. Our guy Paul charch In
there back in Minnesota. He's made some business dealings Matt
Berry and his company and everything else, so they've got,
you know, their their arms wrapped around it. But he
put up on Twitter that guillotine leagues are arriving for
this playoff.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
I am curious on how it works because there's only
four weeks of play and there's a limited amount of teams.
But if you can figure out a way, as I've
told you what we do with my fantasy football league
is we have our guys, just take the fourteen playoff
teams and you fill out a lineup with one player
from each team with a quarterback, four running backs, four
(11:22):
receivers or tight ends, and then four receivers, two tight ends,
and then defense and kicker and whoever is the most
points at the end. So what it is is it's
a little bit of all right, this is who I
think is going to do well, but it's also this
is who I think it's going to advance. Yes, so
you're putting in both of your prediction methods on if
(11:43):
you think a team's going to go to a super Bowl,
you maybe want to have the quarterback of that team,
so that would be your quarterback. So maybe if you
like the Ravens upset the Chiefs, you're gonna take Lamar
Jackson in that scenario because you think the Raven's gonna
have a nice long run and it would make a
lot of sense to do that, Whereas maybe you would
leave somebody off to this if you think they're gonna
get upset. Maybe if the Lions are a top seed,
(12:04):
they're gonna play one less game, maybe get upsets. So
maybe Jared Goff isn't the best all of those decisions
coming into play.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
No, that's the media of it, right. We try to
blend the worlds as best we can. Confidence points in
your pick sets or or always against the spread. I
remember once upon a time folks wanted to do nothing
but straight up picking. Guess what, this year was actually
easier to pick against the spread, at least it was
for me. Then it was picking straight up. The way
(12:30):
things worked out even if we didn't have the catastrophes
that folks, uh point you, No, No, there were plenty
of blips on the radar of crazy ass upsets. Go
back and look at who the Raiders actually beat this year.
Go back and look at some of the sellar dwellers
and the number and the teams that they actually scored
their wins against. They rose up against some of the heavyweights.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
Well, and that's you know, the flip set of it.
It was us talking about the Commanders earlier, but yeah,
you do have those those sort of like wow, look
at the wins like this. Honestly, like the Seahawks, the
Seahawks have only themselves to blame for not making any
of the playoffs, even though I'd like to blame the refs.
On Saturday night for not reviewing that interception call a
(13:13):
little bit longer. They lost to the Giants, Mike in
a home game. You know, they had a field goal
block that they were trying to tie it in. Again
that really they had no business being in any way
because of how poorly they played. But yeah, there are
those situations where even even the better teams. You know,
the Giants were miserable this year, but hey, they're winning.
(13:33):
Seattle kept the Seahawks out of the postseason the.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
Old any given Sunday rule. All I'm trying to say is,
you got plenty of football ahead of you. If fantasy
is what you're doing daily, daily fantasy will certainly be
out there from the different providers, certainly the prize picks
and fan duels and DraftKings and everybody in the world.
They've got their different permutations to it. But if you're
in a long established league, maybe you've got something that
(13:58):
you've stumbled upon that works for you. Please let us know.
Maybe it's something like the Pete fu Tech fantasy football
leagues going all the way back to nineteen eighty seven,
where you're still pen and paper and you refuse to yield.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
Our fantasy league that I played with my cousins when
I was younger. Is on the printer that goes.
Speaker 2 (14:19):
The best?
Speaker 3 (14:21):
Then you.
Speaker 1 (14:23):
And then you had had to tear it off the
rip off, Yes, yes, that was the printer.
Speaker 2 (14:30):
You guess what you're getting for Christmas next year? And
a ream of paper to go with. Yeah, he's Dan
Bayer on Mike Carmen Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith Show
with Me Mike Carmen. All right, let's go in through
a couple of the heroes and zero's coming out of
week seventeen. Uh, because we had just vastly different experiences
(14:50):
for fantasy owners, right, whether you're starting quarterback was suddenly
on the shelf with your Anthony Richardson late sit down
to uh, Jalen Hurts whatever. Looking at the quarterback position,
you know most of the usual suspects were up there.
Brock Perty gave you a huge game before he got hurt,
but Burrow, Baker, Jaden Daniels were all top five guys, oh,
(15:12):
as well as Drew Locke. Yes, so you got yourself
a nice little surprise there. Conversely, Jordan loved Michael Pennix,
Matthew Stafford twenty two to twenty five and twenty seven respectively.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
And I would even say to the effect of Josh
Allen unfortunately was a disappointment. Yeah, compared to the other
quarterback numbers that you saw. Now, if Josh Allen's gonna
have three total touchdowns, are thinking, all right, I should
be good. But yeah, with Baker throwing for his five
and the other names that you mentioned, Josh Allen fell
down on the list.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
More Bjeon Robinson again owing to what Michael Pennix's scores were.
So you know, you take the good, you take the bad.
For b John Robinson, that's five straight monster games to
close out the fantasy run for you. Jamiir Gibbs, here's
the stat that was up on ESPN thirty seven point
eight percent. That's how the percentage of rosters in championship
(16:07):
games were one of the team or the other had
Jamier Gibbs. Oh interesting, curious to go deep, deep dive
into more players, but that was the one that stood
out obviously because they were the Monday NYE game, so
that was the showcase one. But nearly thirty eight percent.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
I would also think, I'm curious on what his average
draft spot was to start the year. But because you
a first. Is that a late first, early second? So
you're cashing in in that realm because anybody that took
Christian McCaffrey number one is probably not playing in their
fantasy championship game. And let's be real, if you had
Tyreek Hill as a as a top five pick in
(16:44):
a PPR league, you are not probably playing in your
championship game because you were and not that first round
picks make everything. It's just the point of Gibbs probably
cashed in, and then the second round pick that you
had probably cashed in just as much.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
Now off of football, guys, h the ADP for Gibbs
was thirteenth. So let's run through it real quick because
this was fun, fun exercise. We'll do this more next
week as we wrap up the season in total on
the I Watch Flex podcast. But McCaffrey, Ceedee Lamb, Tyreek Hill, Jamar,
Chase Breese Hall Yep Crushing by Jehan Robinson, I'm on
(17:27):
Ross Ain Brown, Justin Jefferson, AJ Brown, Garrett Wilson, Jonathan Taylor, Barkley, Okay,
Jamier Gibbs, now Taylor, at least the weeks that mattered,
like really mattered, as long as it didn't torpeer you
in the first So that's the question, right, did did
(17:50):
his early struggles cost you enough to where he wasn't
playing meaningful football for you at the end?
Speaker 1 (17:57):
I think that happened to a lot of.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
Probably to a lot of because it changed your strategy
going forward. Gibbs was thirteenth Poka Nakua and then number
fifteen Marvin Harrison Junior.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
Yeah, I I took that forbidden fruit.
Speaker 2 (18:11):
Yeah, I think we all took a bite. Yeah. Last
week seventeen kind of fails with aj Brown based on expectations.
Obviously Hurts leaving the game and picket slash McKee h
Chan was a bust. And you know you got the
surprise huge game out of Eleak Neighbors, who we were
(18:33):
questioning whether he was going to play when you and
I spoke Thursday night.
Speaker 1 (18:38):
So Ian Roddy Ore, executive producer of our podcast Head
Raiders as a streaming ded that ended up hitting Pooka
Nicole was my oasis song for they didn't get into
the end zone. Had a bunch of catches, yeah, over
one hundred and twenty yards as well, but just didn't
get it into the end zone.
Speaker 2 (18:54):
Now, had we had a pretty pretty good run here.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
And at least Trey McBride finally came through for those
road him and his scoreless is no touchdown season finally
scores in week seventeen. If only he had two touchdowns
on Week seventeen, Mike, I'd be a much happier camp.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
No question about it. At dan Byer on Fox where
you find and find me over at Swollen Dome Dan
Byer in for Jason Smith. I'll buy Carmen here in
the tire IRAQ dot Com. Fox Sports Radio Studios. Let's
talk some college football playoffs next here on Fox. Hey,
welcome back in Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith Show with me,
Mike Carmon Dan Byer in for Jason Smith. Appreciate him.
The iWatch Reflex Podcast will be up our guys, Shay
(19:37):
taking care of things with Ian the masterminds of the
digital tracks, along with our guy Alex ty Shirt, who's
made a sound oh so pretty tonight. Thank you to
the team. As always, we appreciate you guys. Hopefully you
feel the love here as we're at the holiday holiday
holiday season, because I can get to go go back
to calling you dirty rotten. So and so's in about
forty eight hours, right, Isn't that the way that works?
(20:00):
But anyway, we're getting ready for the college football playoffs.
The next round of things are finally here.
Speaker 1 (20:06):
Dan.
Speaker 2 (20:07):
It seems like it's been the you know, the waiting
is the hardest part. Was the old petty line. The
waiting game sucks. Let's play hungry, hungary hippo's of famous
Homer simpsonism. But we get a number of bowl games tomorrow,
starting with Alabama Michigan right and early live from Raymond
James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, where you've got a twelve
(20:27):
and a half point Alabama favorite status here forty four
and a half your total. Louisville Washington will play South Carolina, Illinois, Baylor, LSU,
and then finally, ultimately we get to Penn State Boise State.
Eleven and a half is the line, fifty three and
a half the total. We talked with Pete fu Tech
(20:48):
earlier in the program and trying to figure out where,
how and why you can potentially spring an upset here
against James Franklin and Penn State.
Speaker 1 (21:00):
I don't see it happening, but I do want to
say one thing before we dive into the quarterfinals. Because
we touched earlier on the show about you were mad
at people and who are saying that the NFL has
been bad. And I've heard that people are mad that
the Bowl games don't have the same feel as they
once did. And I loved Bowl games forever, Mike. I
(21:24):
have not watched any. It is no interest to me.
So you would think I would be mad because they're
not interesting. But guess what, We're going to have eleven
games that are interesting. We've had four of them and
now we're going to have seven more, including starting tomorrow
night with Penn State in Boise State, and that, to
me is the win. I don't care about the other bulls.
(21:47):
I just don't. And that's the way it's going to be.
But more meaningful football actually has been made because of
the playoffs. I've just heard people complain of, Oh, it's
ruined the Bulls. Well, the Bulls have been ruined for
how long? Right, I mean at least at some point.
I've hung on to the Rose Bowl and people have
said to me the Rose Bowl has been dead for years. Yeah,
(22:08):
but I.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
Would say this, right, each of the bulls had meaning
to wherever your conference was, to whatever your team was
and beyond that, did you worry about the other forty games?
Speaker 3 (22:20):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (22:21):
No, no, you didn't. You watched him, Like if you're
a disease college football fan like you and I, and
this year it's a little different. And I don't think
it's because of the changes of nil or whatever. I don't.
I think it's the glut. There's a lot of stuff
going on, and you compartmentalize and you go back and
tap into what really is your most passionate thing, or
(22:43):
in our case, the thing you're going to talk about
most Yeah, yep, right, instead of trying to track twenty
five hundred guys in a transfer portal. Yeah, as to
who's showing up and who's not.
Speaker 1 (22:54):
And I know that maybe not everybody's is locked in
on to the teams college football, and so I'm not
as well. But I think we're gonna be watching the
Festa bal on Tuesday night, and we're gonna be watching
that triple header, no doubt on New Year's Day. So
that that's a that's a win for me.
Speaker 2 (23:11):
Very excited the next couple of days, A lot of
football to watch. Uh, you see an upset coming out
of any of these four games?
Speaker 1 (23:17):
I do think Notre Dame can beat Georgia. But his
fetech said, what's really an upset? And I just think
not talking about Oregon is a dangerous thing. They're the underdog,
but there's still number one. I think that's.
Speaker 2 (23:29):
Getting It's got a hide and plain sight the entire time, right, Yeah,
but Gunner Stockton has the opportunity to make his name.
He's Dan, I'm Mike. Thanks for hanging out with us
and enjoying the games. Happy New Year to y'all.
