Speaker 1 (00:01):
In Case You Missed It with Christina Williams is an
iHeart Women's Sports production in partnership with Deep Blue Sports
and Entertainment. Welcome back to another edition of In Case
You Missed It with Christina Williams here on Iheartwomen's Sports Network,
and I'm super excited about this week's guests helping to
(00:23):
join break down the latest headlines around the WNBA and beyond.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
She's fammed to the show now.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Because this is our second time being on the show.
I want to welcome host of the Good follow Show,
sports analyst Normal Stanford Hooper, my good friend Roslyn Gold
on WITDA.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Welcome to the show, Roz. Hey, what's up y'all? What's
going on? Hey? Christina?
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Hey, so Roz do you know a stranger to the show.
But we love to start each episode with our guest
sharing a win of the week and it.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Doesn't have to be basketball related. But what was a
win for you this week? Ooh? Actually, my truth is
that I received some one silk robes from India that
I found out about at a store while I was
visiting in Portugal. And this is something that I've been
like obsessing about to my friends about romanticizing and softening
(01:20):
my everyday life. So instead of feeling like I need
to take a trip somewhere and I need this, we
gonna make homesoft. So I've been doing like these robes
and it makes me feel so nice when I'm at
home watching a game, preparing for a broadcast, like hair
braided up, Incent going my nice little robe on, and
(01:43):
it's so pretty and like that makes me feel like
such the lady. I know, I love that for you. Listen,
I love be a good silk robe.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
So you got to send me the details of where
you got it from, because I love be a good
soul brope.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
But so that's that's.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
That's real, like making your home feel like a home,
but be implanted where you are. I know that's super
important for you in this season of your lifestyle.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
I love that. I like that win. Do you have
a winsor share? Do we do we reciprocate that or
do they all one sided wins? I usually just let
the guests do it, but since since you threw it
back to me, yeah, I'll share a win. I think
a win for me this week. And maybe I've been
a little bit of you rubbed off on me but truly.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Being planted where I am and not feeling guilty for
taking time off. I feel like everything that is moving
in my world will still be there, but it's okay
to take some time to myself. And I feel like
so much of my life is like giving to others,
pouring out to others, and sometimes I feel guilty about
(02:50):
taking time to myself.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
But what term.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
What started as a two day I'm gonna just come
to Puerto Rico has turned into a week.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
So love I.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
I don't feel guilty. Yeah, I don't feel guilty about it.
So that was my wind this week, just being planted.
Yesterday I rode horses for two hours in the rainforest
and like swam in a lake, in a lake, I.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
Was just like this right this city, girl, this is
you know, it is having a transformational experience. This was
This was more than catching a molhito at the beach.
You over there turning into a new person. You are
one with the ocean waves and the wind and the breeze,
(03:32):
and your.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Hair are for I'm feeling all the fields.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Yes, I'm feeling all the fields connecting back with nature.
I'm here for it. So I'm gonna do the show
in my robe. Now I'm now to talk basketball with you.
Since you're in Puerto Rico, I'll be at home in
my road. And actually it's it's reversible and it's super cute.
(03:58):
I love the patterns. No, but I love that. No,
but yeah, a little bit of you is rubbing off
on me just being planted.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
But like, no, just seriously, because you know how chaotic
New York can be sometimes.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
And I was actually with you and I booked the
trip to Puerto Rico.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
So I was like, I think I'm about to book
this trip and I booked it. But yeah, so it's
been the best couple of days for me to just
like reset, especially after our busy all start. I feel
like prior to that, I was working NonStop for like
two weeks. So I feel great. I'm ready to come
back and hit the ground running. But yeah, that was
a win for me this week.
Speaker 2 (04:34):
I'm sorry, happy for you, so deserved, so earned.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Yeah, thank you. All right, let's dive into some women's
hoops talk. The La Sparks have been on a huge
winning streak to start the second half of the season,
and Cameron Brink is expected to make her return this
week as well. For the Los Angeles Sparks. What has
been the key to their success?
Speaker 2 (04:57):
This is a team that coming out of the All
Star break, had some meetings, had some discussions and you know, said,
who are we gonna be? Are we going to be
a playoff team? And if so, that has to start
right now. And I did have the chance to speak
with Azay Stevens. I was on the call for the
Liberty Sparks game where the Sparks came in and won
on that crazy buzzer beer from Rakia Jackson. And you know,
(05:21):
this is a team that's trying to take destiny into
its own hands. And you know, I feel like sometimes
it's like effort, it's making the right habits and then
like the momentum starts to feed on itself. During this
this spurt, they've been playing better defense. Rakia Jackson has
been more aggressive and consistent on both ends of the court,
(05:43):
her defense often fueling her offense. And against the Liberty
in the first half, she was on fire, like unstoppable,
and then cooled off and there was a period where
like she really couldn't buy a bucket, but she kept
staying with it. It didn't change her effort. You know,
and she just kept, you know, fighting her way through
the adversity and in some ways, you know, when you
(06:04):
do that, good things happen to you. You're in the
right place at the right time, get a little good
extra balance from the basketball gods, and that last shot,
which might have been a little circus shot like it
goes in. And I think it was a very validating
win for the Sparks, who got their fifth in a row.
Had previously been in a situation at Barclays where they
(06:24):
were up, gave up a lead to the Liberty and lost.
This time they held on and their other four wins
were against Connecticut's son Washington mystics. Here was a signature
went against the defending camps and they celebrated as such.
So you know, they're red hot right now, and they're
only gaining more reinforcements. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Absolutely, And you talk about the reinforcements, They've added Julie
van lu who's definitely helped at the guard position. But
then you have Ray Barel who's starting to get back
in the make, starting to feel a little bit more comfortable,
and now Cameron brink is coming back into full this week.
What impact do you think Cameron Brink will have on
this Bark squad in the second half of the season.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
I expect the same impact that she had as a
rookie where she immediately impacted defense. You know, look, she
had a thirteen month rehab period and she's joining in
the middle of the season. We may not see the
best store the version of Cameron Brink that at her
highest level until next season. You know, often times it
is that second year after the ACL where a player
(07:26):
is most comfortable. But defensively, she's going to bring size,
She's going to bring rim protection, shot blocking, shot changing, rebounding,
you know, an extra body. And don't forget they also
add coach Letricia Trammel so LT's coming back to LA
She's been there before as an assistant obviously was the
(07:46):
head coach of the Dallas Whigs, but previously. But she's
known as a defensive mind. So I think, you know,
you're getting defensive strategy coming from the sidelines. You're getting
a little extra defensive touch from Cameron Brank, And you're right.
Ray Burrell was pos poised for a huge breakout season
if you would ask me. At the beginning of the year,
(08:06):
she got banged up with the injuries and that slowed
her down because coming out of unrivaled, I'm telling you,
I was there in Miami Ray Ray was doing this
like physically on the court, mentally with her confidence. She
was working very hard. So I think as the season
goes on now you're going to see her get more
and more comfortable.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
And one of the names that we haven't talked about
yet is there for Hanby, who has been consistently playing
at a high level this entire season for the Sparks,
and obviously Kelsey Plumb as well. But yeah, I'm excited
to see what the Sparks do in the second half.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
And as a Ray streams don't miss Yeah we you
you mentioned earlier, so I didn't really well, well I
said her name. We didn't call out because she has
she's having a literal career year.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
Okay, yes, yes, but as a Ray deserves all her
flowers too, and and it's usually me, I'm ready, but
I got all the props for the show.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
This is for azaras flowers. I love that. I love that, No,
here are your flowers. So she's such a sweetie. I
absolutely love that.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
No, she is, but with teams like the Sparks with
so much talent, we usually don't see a turn until
the second half of the season, and so I think
that a lot of people counted them out because of
the player injuries in the first half of the season,
but also the new head coach, and I feel like
a lot of people were just like, I'm not sure
about them yet, and we started to see, you know,
(09:31):
turn the page a little bit in the second week.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
And the second half of the season all right, Moving
right along to the Las Vegas Aces.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
They had a huge, huge win just the other night,
but still struggling a little bit coming into the second
half of the season. What have you been seeing about
this Aces that stand out to you?
Speaker 2 (10:01):
Well, actually, you know, coming out of the All Star break,
I felt and going into it, I felt like they
were starting to hold onto a little optimism you were hearing.
I mean, the first half of the season was disappointing
in a lot of ways and surprising. I don't know
that everybody saw it coming that they would have this
much disconnectedness this season. I think there were huge expectations
(10:26):
for like what juwe Lloyd would do there, and you know,
Asia Wilson coming back and you know, running it back
trying to get you know, Chelsea Gray had the biggest,
unrivaled Like my expectations were super high, you know, like,
but we see like the erosion of this team, of
this coaching staff over seasons, over years, it started to
(10:47):
catch up a little bit and some of the fits
had to do some meshing. So I think, like heading
into the All Star Break, I was starting to hear
some optimism from coach Becky Hammond who basically was like, hey,
you know, we just need to be healthy where a
veteran group, we are experienced, We know that we just
need the right momentum heading out of the All Star Break.
(11:09):
And one of the big keys for them that I
see is that, you know that has also been a
case for a couple of seasons now, the inconsistency on defense,
and that's where they need to like start and make
things happen for them. And then production, you know, like
it's been up and down. Who's going to be supportive
around Asia Wilson And obviously there's been a lot of
(11:31):
attention on Jewel Lloyd's fit, which I've always pushed like
give a little patience for but I did like what
I saw coming out of this last game where she
had the chance to come off the bench, something she
asked for. You know, KB got the start. I loved
(11:51):
the energy from KB. She was moving out the ball
throughout the whole course of the game. She's hitting three,
she's cutting, she's hidden layups. And then I thought, for
Jewel Lloyd, I thought there were a lot of like
confident high IQ just like simple fundamental basketball plays being made.
When she came off the bench, spotting up on the
three point line, stepping into it, not pressed, you know,
(12:15):
not moving too fast, steps into it, knocks it down.
Oh there's a smaller defender on her. She deliberately goes
down there, posts her up and finish. I'm coming down
and transition off the dribble. They're not on me, pulls
a sweet, sweet jumper to go like so I think, like,
you just got to stack wins if you're Jewel Lloyd,
(12:35):
if you're the Aces, and then slowly but surely, like
maybe build some momentum.
Speaker 3 (12:39):
Yeah, he talked about Jewel coming off the bench and
that being an adjustment that has been working for the
Aces so far. But when it comes to Chelsea Bread,
you mentioned the season she had an unrivaled winning a
championship with Team Rose and the expectations that everyone had
for her coming into this season. What's going to be
the key for her to be able to turn a
page and make a difference with this Aces squad As
(13:02):
kind of the head of the stake, as the point
guard of the team, what can we see differently from
Chelsea Bray.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
Over the years, I have stood on a mountaintop and
yelled like, as Chelsea Gray goes, so do the Aces.
You know, Asia Wilson is your MVP, But I feel
like it was always Chelsea Stern to pot and so
I think like, for me, one of the most important
things I'm looking for with her is like her assist
creation and then her efficiency like in scoring. But we
(13:29):
know that the way she gets come her shots are
unconventional sometimes and don't always look textbook, but like she
can get it done. So I think, like that's what
I would be looking for. But I think again, like
it's so easy when we're talking about the Aces issues
to want to pinpoint one player or you know, and
I think like this is very much a team issue first,
(13:52):
Like I think there have been spurts where I was
surprised by the lack of edge or competitiveness from the Aces.
I like had never seen that and was like, oh
my god, wait what. And then you know, just the
repeated spurts of bad defense and like, I think those
(14:13):
things need to get short up first. And actually Becky
Hannon said it, She's like, we haven't handled hard well
this year, and I thought that was pretty spot on.
Like I think for a lot of these players, they
have what they need already and there's just some gut
checking that has to happen too, you know. So it's
it's still a lot of season left and I would
(14:36):
just suggest they keep stacking wins.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
Yeah, And I think it's it's even harder now than
before because the parody within the league in terms of
the teams and the rosters that was built after the
Races won that back to back championships. Teams responded by
adding pieces to get better. And so I think that's
part of the struggle as well, is that, like it's
just an entirely different in w NBA than those two
(14:59):
previous season is where we saw the Aces come out
and win those back to back champions ships.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
Yeah, and it's a completely different Aces team too, Like
they over the years, they've continued to lose important pieces
and haven't necessarily put the same caliber back in, Like
you know, whether it was Kelsey Pum or Elitia Clark
or you know, tiff Hay's or like they've lost pieces
(15:26):
and then not to mention what they lost on the sidelines.
You're talking about not only la Cosas Tyler Marsh. These
are two new head coaches now, Like there's been just
the unnatural, Like there's a lot of erosion that's tappened
to this franchise and it's hard to stay on top.
It's hard to stay on top. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:44):
Absolutely, Well, the trade deadline is August seventh, and so
with all that being said, do you think that the
Aces should shake things up a bit to get better
in the second half of the season ahead of the deadline.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
Yes. I think the answer is yes, they need to
like add pieces to their roster. I don't exactly know
what that looks like or how, but I think the
Aces need more to be a true contender at this
point given the strength to some other teams. I like that.
I like that, all right, Rod.
Speaker 3 (16:16):
Another cute topic and headlined around the league this week
is the condensed WNBA schedule and its impact on player injuries. Now,
there was a tweet from Rebecca Lobo that sort of
showed that you know, the condensed schedule and saying that
this should be addressed in the CBA negotiations. One, do
you agree that this is an issue that should be
(16:38):
addressed moving forward? And two have you seen the condensed
schedule impact some of the teams around the W Yes.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
I mean I am listening to the players. We're hearing
them over and over, respected veterans speaking up on the
schedule and how it's affecting their bodies. And I think one,
in a time of increased eyeballs and the tension, we
want to make sure that the players have the chance
to put the best product out there as possible, not
just slugging through games. And you know, when you talk
(17:11):
about a condensed schedule, that doesn't just only mean like
less time between games. And it's not only that players
are more banged up and tired and wary. It also
means less time for practice. You got you have the
lesser product. Teams, Teams report more slippage over the course
of the season, less time to like work through their things.
(17:31):
So I think that's important too, And I think it's
especially if the if the duration of the season remains
as it does, then these injuries that are piling up,
suddenly you're talking about missing critical and huge chunks of
a short season. It's it's a lot of games in
four months. This is not like the NBA where you know,
you have our calf injury, you miss a month and
(17:53):
there's still seven months left. You know. This is like
you could miss a really critical or an entire playoff
run with the wrong injury. And so I think like
that is very important to be discussed in player negotiations
and things like that and CBA negotiations.
Speaker 3 (18:11):
What do you think, Yeah, I know what we've seen
recently teams use that rest designation for some of.
Speaker 2 (18:16):
Their star and role players as well.
Speaker 3 (18:18):
Some examples Paigebackers, he set out a couple of games,
Kate Martin set out a couple of games, and head
coaching out in Nkasse made it clear that you know,
we have a lot of back to back games and
we want to prevent, you know, player injury. So this
is why you may not see some of your favorite
players on a night on a game night, is because
they simply need to rest or recover. So I'm all
(18:39):
here for players health and safety first, and I think
that it should be something that is at rest in
those negotiations moving forward, especially if Kapy is talking about
extending the season and adding more games with expansion. I
think that fast the dhrest first. And I know it
has a lot to do with the TV schedule and
arena availability, et cetera, et cetera, but there has to
(19:00):
be some sort of compromise for the product. As you mentioned,
we see players like Kate mclark who has no timetable
for her return. She's dealing with a grown injury. Brianna
Stewart had got injured at that game against the Sparks.
I haven't really heard anything in terms of an update,
but she missed the last game for the Liberty as well.
So we're seeing star players in the WNBA having to
(19:26):
sit out because of injury. And how does that impact,
you know, the viewership, the attendance, all those different factors
that comes with you know, growing the game. So I
think that this is an issue that should be address
moving forward as well.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
Yeah, and like there's this climax moment that happens. You
have two teams that are supposed to be your biggest
ratings getters, and the Chicago Sky and the Indiana Fever
face off in prime time and the two stars aren't playing,
and like, that's crazy. That's kind of the monster that
was created within, you know, like, and that's definitely what
(19:59):
you don't. However, it did still rate well. The ratings
just came in. But yeah, so there's an issue here,
and I think to your point though, it is complex
and complicated in the sense of TV scheduling, arena availability.
You know, a lot of these arenas as you get
further out of the summer, are like already flotted to NBA,
(20:20):
other concerts, other things. And then also like what does
this mean for other leagues? You know, if the season
gets longer and expanded, you know, what does it mean
for your overseas, your unrivaled your athletes, unlimited and prioritization.
Minds and brains much smarter than mine are discussing these things.
But like, it's not just some straightforward thing.
Speaker 3 (20:43):
I agree, it's not a straightforward thing. It's very complexing.
That's something for Kappy Englebert in the league to handle.
But I hope that they are listening to the players, especially.
Speaker 2 (21:04):
All right before we let you get out of here.
Speaker 3 (21:06):
I want to talk about the New York Liberty, who
are on a two game losing streak, obviously without Branda Stewart,
who's a huge part.
Speaker 2 (21:14):
Of their core.
Speaker 3 (21:15):
But what have you been seeing from this Liberty team
in the second half of the season.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
I also heard that there was a team a players.
Speaker 3 (21:22):
Meeting that happened as well ahead of media availability this week.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
So what's the latest on the Liberty. I feel that
their latest loss for me, as an you know, not
being with the team or on the team, I would
say to me, it kind of feels like it's fatigue.
That was their third game in four days, they'd hit
the road, they were down bodies, and so like, that's
low hanging excuse fruit to like pick from. I love
(21:49):
that none of them were willing to use the excuses though.
I loved that postgame it took forty minutes before they
came out and spoke to media, and when they spoke
to media, nobody was willing to say, oh, anything about
coach Standy because they were asked and they were like, no, no,
this is on the players, and like that they held
it amongst themselves and that nobody was talking about being
down bodies or the schedule or fatigue. They was like,
(22:10):
this is we need an attitude shift because the whole
thing about not coming out with urgency is not a
new thing. It wasn't a one time situation with the
Dallas Wings. This has been a reoccurring issue over the
course of the season. And so again I was really
impressed with the leadership within the team and the accountability that,
(22:32):
like immediately after they all said, Yo, we're going to
talk about this and address this. And I think that
comes from a very veteran and mature team with the
healthy culture to be able to like address things right
ahead on as it's happening, and the liberty in my
coverage of them, like you'll talk to players and they'll
(22:53):
talk about like, hey, when we're down, we're never panicked
in the timeout, in the huddle, we we can come back.
We know that we can. They're confident, they're veteran, they're talented,
and they're defending camps and they had had success coming
back from big deficit, double digit deficits this season. But
that's still not like good habits to create and it's
(23:15):
fitting them in the tail. They were probably one extra
minute off of coming back and taking the lead over
the Sparks, but they dug that hole for too long
in the game and too deep, you know, so it
really bit them not coming out with the right energy
and urgency against the Dallas Wings who never looked back
against them, although they almost came back at the very
(23:36):
end again, So you don't want to lean on that.
You don't want to be like a team that's about
turning the switch on. I think you want to be
a team that like understands respecting the process and the
right habits from start to finish in the game. That's
a good way to put it.
Speaker 3 (23:52):
And I remember even from last season coach Sandy she
said something similar about the Liberty having to play the
whole forty minutes through and as you mentioned, not being
a team that always has to crawl back. So looking
forward to see how they make an adjustments. They're waiting
for Emam Sumen to come over and get approve of
her visa, so I know that she'll be a huge
hope to the Liberty in the second half of this season.
(24:14):
Before you get out of here, Roz, I got to
ask you some predictions for the second half of the season.
Speaker 2 (24:20):
We're gonna start.
Speaker 3 (24:20):
With the team that you think will make the biggest
leap in the second half of the season.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
The biggest leap, it's probably the Sparks because they've struggled
the most and I think they can jump their way
into some of those final playoff positions. Lord, if the
Seattle Storm got serious about being consistent, they could be
really good. You never know which version you're gonna get.
And I say, don't count out the Fever, don't count
(24:46):
them out those That team is tough. You got to
give them credit. They'dn't been through a whole lot and
look at them, still playoff still playoff contender here. You know, tough,
they know who they got, they kind of understand all
their roles, and like, I don't know how it's going
to play out, but if they do see Caitlyn Clark again,
they could be very spicy. So I kind of look
(25:07):
at all those teams as teams that could make the
you know, a jump, a bigger jump. You know. The
teams that are already holding it down are your Liberty,
your your Links, your Liberty, your Mercury, your dream. I
like them. I don't think the jump is going to
be that big, So yeah, I named like twelve teams.
Speaker 1 (25:24):
But.
Speaker 2 (25:26):
I like it. I like it. I like it.
Speaker 3 (25:28):
So the Sparks, the Seattle Storm if they can stay
consistent in the Indiana.
Speaker 2 (25:33):
Fever as well.
Speaker 3 (25:34):
Yeah, all right, one last prediction if the leak, if
the season ended today, who would be your MVP?
Speaker 2 (25:40):
My MVP today is a Fista Collier. However, I think
Alyssa Thomas is breeding down her neck and it is
not as far apart as some people would have you believe.
I think Alyssa has.
Speaker 4 (25:51):
A very very serious MVP case that can absolutely be
further bolstered by how the way this season ends and
plays out these next you know, tens of tens or
twenties of games that are left and shameless plug if
you check out Good follow Show, I make a full
bodied rant.
Speaker 2 (26:12):
On Alissa Thomas's MVP eligibility in case.
Speaker 3 (26:17):
So yeah, She's definitely someone who's been creeping year to
year with this MVP kind of votes when it comes
to it, so super close. I think with her size
and ability, what she's been able to do in terms
of leading the league in assists getting the Phoenix Mercury
into the top tier. When we talk about results, winning record,
(26:40):
getting her teammates involved. I think that Elica, like you said,
is right there with the PISA, and I do think
it's a very close race. Maybe in the first half
of the season I had an a PISA over everyone,
but I think that Elisa can really make a case
as the second half of the season continues.
Speaker 2 (26:57):
So I like that. Yeah, And you know it's fun
because like, look, the FISA also, is it gonna make
it easy? I was literally Likenthisa is still out here
killing these girls no matter what, and her team is
the best in the league. And if you want to
make an argument, like I was kind of thinking like, oh, also,
who's more important to their team's success than the LISTA
right now? And I was like, honestly, you take the
FISA off the lakes, It's not like there's some schmos.
(27:20):
But she's highly important as well. So it's tough, it's spicy, yep.
Speaker 5 (27:27):
It's gonna get the people going, definitely, definitely, And these
are few people not named Asian Wilson for the first
SOB in three seasons.
Speaker 3 (27:37):
It's like at the top right because the list when
it comes MVP, but they's just been playing out of
this world as well. But given the Aces and what
they've been going through in terms of the adversity that
they have to overcome.
Speaker 2 (27:47):
I think those two are top tier right now.
Speaker 3 (27:50):
