and Entertainment. Welcome to another edition of In Case You
missed It with Christina Williams. Here on the Iheartwomen's Sports
Network and Atlanta.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Dream Fans, you are in for a.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
Very special treat because this week's guest is a member
of the twenty twenty five WNBA Draft class, current guard
for the Atlanta Dream, and she won a national championship
at South Carolina. So, without further ado, I want to
welcome Teina Powpowe to the show. Welcome to In Case
you missed it.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Thank you for having me. So you were drafted to
the Atlanta Dream.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
And when I think about Atlanta, I think about not
only the culture that's embedded into the franchise, but how
you all come together as a team.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
What is playing in the city of Atlanta.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
Taught you about like present and the pressure of being
a w and be a rookie.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
I mean, Atlanta has treated me very well.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
I'm very blessed to be in Atlanta, get drafted by Atlanta,
and I'm just you know, soaking everything in with the
fans and support the love and they show so much
as well, like even before I came to Atlanta, and
so there's no pressure at all.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
I came in an ideal.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Situation as a rookie, but at the same time, there
is pressure perform and do go out there and make
an impact no matter you know, if you're playing a lot,
if you're not playing a lot.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
But you know, when you.
Speaker 3 (01:33):
Have vets that you play with that are you know,
all star superstars, it makes a job a little easier
and that I'm just super you know, like I said,
it's just super blessed to be on a team like Atlanta.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
One of the things that has been so impressive about
this twenty twenty five draft class, that's just how well
you all have been able to transition so quickly into
the w And we're midway through this season already, and
I just won't know what. What has this stress taught
you about your game and about yourself.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
I mean saw me to stay in the moment and
stay present especially with you know, like I said, we're
on the road for a while. So it's just taught
me to you know, stay present, be present, and you.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Know, soak everything in and just take one day in time.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
You talked about walking into the ideal situation with bets
like Bree Jones, BG, Alicia Gray, and Ryan Howard Jordan Canada. Uh,
what is the biggest thing that you picked up from
being around them being a pro?
Speaker 3 (02:35):
I mean when you when you come from Dollan's daycare,
it's it's a transition.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
I mean it was a smooth transition.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
But at the same time, I'm still learning to balance
out when to be locked in and going to be
you know, myself. And so just watching them from afar
and you know, they lead by example because every leader,
you know, leads differently, and so my job right now
is to learn how to be a pro and be
professional at the same time be myself as well.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
So I'm trying to find the balance between those two.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
You mentioned Don stay here and she's Don Staley is
one of the most respected coaches in the sport of basketball.
You were able to win the national championship during your
tenure at South Carolina.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
What does she taught you about winning the winning culture?
Speaker 1 (03:15):
And what would you say about the presence of the
Game Cocks and the WNBA.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
I mean, the president of the Game Fox is unmatched
I mean, I feels like every team has it at
least one game Cock, But just being able to have
that connection and relationship with them is it's an amazing
feeling to have. And you get to see a friend
every time you play against a team, And you know,
she taught me a lot about pro habits and being
discipline and being consistent with pro habits, because those are
(03:41):
what you're gonna have to fall on. We don't you
know when things aren't going your way, and so that's
what I learned a lot from her, and just being
able to adjust as well to your circumstances.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
So I learned a lot from her.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
But those are the main key points that I've that
I learned under the two years with playing.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
With for her last and rookie, you had some like
viral moments. One of them I remember like it was
preseason and Leah Boston was on the.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
Free throw line.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
Oh my gosh, describe that moment. What happened that moment?
Did you sort of forget that you all were not
teammates anymore?
Speaker 3 (04:14):
I thought we were streaming the free throw, but I
was talking to my teammate and I just saw a
shot going and then I just started flapping and it
happened to be a Leah and so I was like,
you know what, that's cool. I mean, you know game coacolumni.
Why not you know, it's pre season. So then again,
I just now pay attention to who's shooting free throws
and who I can flap for now.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
One of the most intriguing parts of your story is
how you embed your culture, your heritage into every part
of who you are on and off the court. You
often speak about not growing up not seeing that representation.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Now that you're in the league. What's it like to
be that person that you didn't see growing up? I mean, man,
I love it. It's something that I take great pride
in it, like you said, and I'm still pushing that
at Jedi.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
And you know, there's some things in the work so
where I can bring my culture within Atlanta and then
hopefully throughout the whole league and to the fans as well.
So there's a lot of things and works for that.
But I'm just super proud to be, you know, Simon
and represent my culture and just keep pushing that agenda
and being able to be that role model for you know,
girls or boys that didn't have role models.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
I've made before. He said, some things are in the works.
Can you give us a little sneak peek of what's
to come?
Speaker 3 (05:27):
A community don't like you on the deal, I'll like
you DL So y'all, y'all gonna have to tune in
for that.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
I'm gonna say that your.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
Coach, Carl s Mesko, he's been getting a lot of
Coach of the Year nons early on into this season
because of the success that this team has been able
to have, but just so many pieces and as a
first time head coach, to you from your standpoint, can
you describe what his system and philosophy is for this
Atlanta Dream Team and how you sort of fit into
the fold with it. I mean, threes are layups, you know,
(06:00):
with get the ball inside.
Speaker 3 (06:02):
Good things happen when the when the ball gets inside,
and you know, we have willing passing bigs who are
willing to you know, pass the ball out and you know,
get catch and.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
Shoot open threes.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
And uh, you know, obviously I came in as a
shooter and that's my job now, it's my life. So
you kind of fit within the same, you know, offensive scheme,
and so it's a really fun system to play for,
and I'm just excited to see how he keep suggesting
it keeps the offensive scheme growing.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
You come into the league at a very interesting time
where the momentum is growing, sort of the first group
of NIL athletes benefiting from just the transition of keeping
college fans carrying over to the league game Cup fans
are strong in college space in the w n b
A space as well. What are your thoughts on being
(06:51):
a small part of the growth in trajectory uniform it's
basketball in the hoops.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
I mean it was great.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
I mean, like you said, the it's only going to
go up from here, and I'm just really proud and
blessed to be part of that, you know, transition, and
I'm sort the near by far and inspired the younger
generation and just you know, being that Robot Renowland for
my culture, bro for the whole game of basketball, because
you know, Coach you know, I've always took taken this
from Coach Shady that good basketball is going to reward itself.
(07:18):
And I believe that, you know, women's foop is good
basketball and it's just going to go up from here,
and that we just got to keep inspiring the younger
generation to keep going and just have fun with it
and enjoy the enjoy the journey, and that I'm still
doing a percent agenda that women's spooks is great basketball.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
What would you say is the main reason live fandom
and this year in particular last year included have carried
over from college to the pros.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
I think the game is changing.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
You know, can Cart came in as you know, a
really great shooter shooting from you know, a distance that
we haven't seen before, and that she's doing it a
high clip, and I think that just brings a lot
more you know, fans to tune in and just be.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Able to.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
Watch the WNBA. I mean college is you know, also
fun to watch. I love, you know watching college basketball,
not only for women's but men's as well, and you know,
people are tuned in. They want to see their players,
you know, do great things in the pros. And I
feel like you have great fans in college that they're
going to follow the players in the pro league and so,
like I said, it's only going to be up from
(08:23):
here and I'm just super excited to see that growth
in that improvement.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
What's your favorite thing about the city of Atlanta.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
We kind of talked about the culture and teammates, but
off the court, what do you like about Atlanta?
Speaker 2 (08:45):
I love everything about Atlanta. I mean the people, like
you said, the culture. I really love the food.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
And I haven't done much exploring yet just because of
how you know, the schedule is busy, but I do
plan on doing a lot of exploring the off season.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
So I'm just say the food for right now and
the people.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
We will talk about Atlanta, like the Chicken Wings and
Magic City. Not saying that you have to go there
or anything, but it's like the discussion and people go
to Atlanta strip clubs to get the chicken wings. I
don't know if that's a thing. But what's one of
your favorite places to go to eat? To grug on
in Atlanta?
Speaker 2 (09:19):
A place called Hops. It's a fried chicken place. Take
the chicken. Yeah, fried chicken. I try to stay away
from it though, but I love their fried chicken.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
Like it's really bomb and like I like to go
there on my off days.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
And it's just great food.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
It's it's a little market, it's a little pont City
market and so like there's a lot of selections there.
But I love Hops Chicken y'all should go try it
if y'all tuning in.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
And now, one of.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
The things that I noticed that Atlanta the team, what
you all do in terms of the game day entertainment
is embedding that culture into just the presentation and the games.
What's it like to play at Gateway and just that
energy at the fans br and also that you all
bring on game day.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
Man, I love playing at Gateway.
Speaker 3 (10:05):
I mean, the fans are amazing, the support, and it's
like it's not small, but it's like a good amount
of people, and so it's just really fun to play
in front of them, and it gets really loud, Like
I describe it as a club. I feel like you're
playing at a club with a music blasting and it's
I mean, it's great vibes. And I wish people could
really experience that and come down to Atlanta and just
you know, tune in and watch a game and you know,
(10:26):
watch it in person because it's really fun to play
in front of them, and they just so they just
show so much love and support.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
What would you say, You're welcome to the W ANDB
moment has been so far, I feel like everybody knows this,
but those probably can't win. I got.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
When I ran into Natasha Howard's screen and like you know,
Bez was like yelling at me, but it was like
so loud that I couldn't hear it. And so there's
a few photos online that shows me like laying on
the ground and me you going like this, and like
Lisha's looking annoyed with me because I should I heard
that the screen was coming, but I'd say that was
probably my welcome to the w moment just because of
(11:05):
how loud it was. I didn't hear the screen the
screen was coming, and just how the photos represented, you know,
how much of you know over a.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
P I M. What would you say is next for you?
How would you describe what's guiding you right now? Just
staying ready?
Speaker 3 (11:23):
I mean, as you can tell, my minutes have gone down,
and you know, you know that's just the that's you know,
not only basketball but life as well. And so I'm
just staying ready to stay prepared, and that's what's guiding
me right now, and just being able to show up
and show out and just be regular.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
My name's called.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
You just mentioned like how you have to be able
to adapt to any in all situations, and you talked
about your minutes going down. But from an observing standpoint,
what are you learning as an athlete when you're watching
you're not playing so much.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
What is that teaching you details and.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
When getting when you get in the game the immediate
impact that you got to make. And I feel like
that's just something that I've been learning on the bench
and he's watching the game through an athlete's eyes instead
of the fans eyes, And it's just something that I'm
continuing to learn and it's something that it's going to
be part of my game and just gonna make me
mentally stronger and tougher.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
And I just.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
Want to be that in media impacting Leggett in the game.
So that's something that I've learned and is still growing.
The Elma Dream have made one of the biggest jumps
I think from last year to this year, just all
pieces and everything working together. Why should fans be excited
for the Dream? In the second half of the w
NBA season, we played the basketball. I mean, it's really
(12:38):
fun and we have a lot of Hoopers, a lot
of All Stars on the on the Atlanta Dream and
it's just a really fun, you know, a fun team
to watch. And they should definitely tune in because of how,
like you said, a big jump that they made from
last year, and it's something that you know, it's a
part of the journey, you know, wins and losses, but
(12:59):
they just gotta, you know, well, keep showing up, keep
showing out, and just keep showing love no matter what.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
