The Irish announced the hiring of Cincinnati Bengals assistant coach Al Golden as the new defensive coordinator on Wednesday, and on today's episode Cam and Conor share their first impressions of the new DC, what he's telling the team as he takes the helm of the defense, and what his NFL credentials mean to his new locker room. The guys break down Marcus Freeman's overhauled coaching staff, the team's emotional reaction to Nick Lezynski's departure to Vanderbilt, and how Notre Dame staved off potential disaster with massive changes in the coaching ranks.

Plus, a major announcement: this weekend the rest of the crew will be reuniting with Kyle in LA for a sit-down interview with The Volume's founder himself, Colin Cowherd. Be sure to tune in on Monday for what should be the biggest episode yet!

Speaker 1 (00:01):
The volume What's Up Everybody? Welcome back to the Inside
the Garage podcast and Comma Owen's in along with Change Wallace, Conradigan,
Camart and Um. Today we're gonna start off with the

(00:21):
Outside the Garage topic that has to do with the
topic we're gonna touch on today. Chris Jenkins asked, what
do you guys think of the Higher of Al gold
In for d C. I think it's an awesome higher
hopefully a great fit. Best of luck and draft prep,
transfer destination and up tim season Irish. Uh. First off,
thank you Chris. Chris, Well, well, we're written question, but

(00:41):
obviously I don't really have a perspective on this. So
you guys want to talk about the Higher and like
have you met him and stuff like that? At a
good conversation with him yesterday? Um, I just was coming
up to go meet with coach mckins who just happened
to be there, and on surface, he seems like a
pretty good guy. UM, I don't know. I don't know
much about him. He said he's been coached for twenty
eight years and from his resume seems that it looks

(01:02):
like he's been coaching Titans linebackers and has been a
head coach and defense coordinators, so it seems like he
knows what you're doing. The message that stuck with me
was that, uh, it doesn't need to be about defense.
I could just help you with anything. I can help
you with life. I could help like he's been around
for a long time and the game football, and he's
like an older dude, so he's just like, come to

(01:24):
me for any advice that you need. That's probably what
stuck to me to most. And I don't know, it
seems like a really genuine guy. He talked to my
lifting group. Um, I don't talked to him individually, but
he talked to our lifting group this morning, and like
Kim said, immediately, you could tell it. He's like a
very smart guy. I don't know, if lack of better word,
he seems like wise. He just seems like very experienced

(01:44):
and like he said, yeah, the coach of twenty eight years.
There's one cool thing he said. He was like, I'm
sure you guys are aware, Like I was just coaching
Super Bowl, but when I drove into a Notre Dame,
there's there's nothing like it. And I was like, okay,
like that's pretty it's pretty big. He's like, I just
coaching super Bowl and this is a really special place.
I hope you guys appreciate that. And I was like

(02:06):
pretty cool for him to say that on his very
first day literally just coaching the super Bowl, like the
biggest event in sports, like besides like you know, beside soccer, Kyle. Yeah,
he's like a very genuine guy obviously so early, but
good first impression for sure. From what I heard, he
was the Miami di Cordner was Miami's head coach, Temple's

(02:28):
head coach, okay facts, and he was like like two
thousands tennish. Maybe he was the head coach when Temple
was getting out of the dirt kind of like and
they had that good season and they had a good
a good little run and then um with the Miami thing,
I think from what I hear, apparently they had a
bad administration when he was there in Miami and it
couldn't really be successful based on that. So did you

(02:51):
talk about like his coaching style at all as far
as defense or scheme and like that. Yeah, I have
no idea they Um, I don't know if Marcus is
going to be uh play call or what. Yeah, I
was gonna let that slide. I'm glad somebody else's hope. Boys, Yes,

(03:13):
let's do it. It's gonna be kind of weird for him.
Going from NFL to college was like two completely different
run systems and like organizations, and he has to recruit
again and do all that stuff. But I mean, yes,
I'm sure he loves it. If he came back to it,
I feel like there was like a burning desire for
him to come back. He did. Um, he hasn't said

(03:34):
like anything about whether we're going to run the same
defense stuff like that, because if he does bring something
new in, there'll be three different defenses in three years. Sneaky.
That would be interesting part. But I don't think so,
um because when I was when I was talking to him,
they were essentially talking about the same playbook that we
still had from last year. So I don't know. And

(03:55):
I just think from coach Freedom and being the coach
that he is the defensive mind of coach, that he
would want to have some type of influence on the
deepest everywhere. And also Coach Freeman is you know, he's
like your position coaches, your head coach, So I think
he's more so I guess for spring ball, worried about
the defensive coordinator as the linebackers coach getting the room
together because the room feels a little alienated, especially too,

(04:22):
so he's like taking over Freeman's Yeah, okay, okay, And
I think that's what Freeman wants because the linebackers are
they feel pretty alienated right now because of Lezynski going
to Vanderbilt. Away definitely deserved that and learned that, and
they said themselves, it's pretty bittersweet because if anyone in

(04:44):
the gooky deserves it, more like they didn't have anybody
at the moment because coach Freedman obviously had to bye
bye head coaching duties and do all that stuff, and
he couldn't be ahead of the group and like the
flux there and for the whole like NFL playoffs, right
because you can't like he's obviously not going to be
in contact with that. He's doing this coach and around it.

(05:07):
So they they're like the last yeah, as the last
people right now far that didn't have a coach. It's
three OLB coaches in three years, that is m I
think it's kind of it's good that he is a
DC at the highest level and like I'm not saying
there's like not respect around certain college teams, but like

(05:27):
if like you bring in like a random college coach,
I think you maybe wanna tray you away from him
easier than like a guy you know as coach at
the highest level, and like you know what he's saying.
He knows what he's talking about. And if you don't
think that, you gotta take your look at yourself in
a mirror, like I should be listening to him, Like
I should be hearing what he's saying and stuff like that.
So I think that'd be good for everybody to in
my lift group. He was like, even if you seem

(05:49):
in the building you want to talk about what it
takes to get to the next level, I just believe
you've got to talk to you. Sometimes we can't feel
like I don't I wouldn't say us, but sometimes people
can feel like their coach, I don't know what he's
talking about, or you know, you know, you know, yeah, yeah,
like kind of bailing on this coaches like yeah, yeah,
in the respect isn't there, and it's just like a

(06:10):
weird like connection. But just him saying that to the
entire team and not just the defense that speaks numbers.
He got confidence that you know what he's talking about,
and that's yeah, that's still the NFL like connotation is cool, right,
Like coaches that have played in the NFL. You're like, okay,
like this I might engage in this like a little
bit more, right, like the Universitiver coaches played the NFL,
And I'm like, like he adds another layer of experience

(06:34):
and our layer of being coached by an NFL like
coach himself. Right, So there's like that extra piece to
it that I think adds to that, like ole mantra
of like knowledge you might gain from being under the
NFL level head coach or they can go for a
lot about coaches right now because coach Houston, um he
wasnt he coached the NFL, and um I run a

(06:54):
backs coach. Yeah, I think it will also be dope
that like he has NFL connections and like if we
have guys next year and the years coming, like who
are looking to get drafted, like teams will call him
and like who have put to give not give back
to But like it'll come to you a certain ways,
Like when you're in the back of your mind, you're
like this dude knows what the NFL defensive back linebacker
d line, who knows what they look like, and that

(07:15):
should listen to him if I want to get to
that level. So defintely, I'm gonna be good for everybody.
Frem and Sneaky put a great, great stack together. Do
you think that's tough on like the newer guys who
not like newer players and talking about who might have
been recruited by coaches that left. Yeah, definitely. Yeah, back
room was broken for a little bit after Zinsky left it. Yeah,

(07:37):
like some of the freshmen, Uh, they got pretty emotional
and I don't want to mention the names, but it
got pretty emotional. Gave like a pretty hard felt speech
after and once he told him that he's going to Vanderbilt,
someone were like broke out into tears and it was
like a sad like twenty minutes in the group for
a second when nobody was really talking and everybody's just
like really emotional essentially like he recruited them ever since

(08:01):
they were first recruited from the name, because he's been
there for who knows how long. So yeah, I can
see how the young guys like look at that, which
like I look confused, I upset. I can see the
old guys their reaction was a little more control because
it's like if people don't know, they don't they don't know,
like Coach Nick's story, coaches in the story, like they
don't know he works. I've never seen somebody work harder

(08:23):
than him before in my life, like just at their craft,
at their jobs, you know what I'm saying. So I
can see how young guys are probably looking at that,
like what the hell is going on? Like I just
got here and now you're leaving. But like, honestly, if
you ask anybody good, he deserved have been left, deserved
to have been promoted ten times over. That's years ago,
as years ago, Yeah, that's not this year ago. I
don't give a shout out to Coach League because he

(08:46):
brought Sonny Rufus, who was the st G A at
Notre Dame last year and he's actually LGD now with
Coach Kelly. But Coach Lee recognized his work and recognize
his knowledge and stuff like that and brought him to
end Built with him, and now like he didn't forget
about Coach Nick. Brought Coach Nick with him. Knew what
kind of guy he was and now like everybody's happy,

(09:07):
so and you're getting a good dude. Yeah, So happy
for coach Nick for sure. Just to see how that
impact on the program is going to be in the
next few years. Not just to see what that look
like on Notre Dame, no on Vanderbilt coach coach leave
with coach Nick and just how they are like a
well machine together. It's gonna be interesting. I think Nick,

(09:28):
now that he's like officially got the title so deserving,
I think he's just kind of like work even harder,
which isn't almost impossible to say worry worried about that.
It's kind of backtracking. But I feel like this whole situation,
even up until now, like all the coaches are pretty
much hired. When a head coach leaves, like it puts
everybody in like a weird position. I think we underestimated

(09:50):
how much of a mental toll that took on us,
like that whatever three week period, four week period, even
after coaching was the head coach, Like all position coaches,
we're like, are you staying, are you leaving? And they
honestly can't give us an answer whether they're staying or
leaving or not. And it's just like it's nothing against them.
It's just like they gotta know, they gotta have job
security for their family and stuff like that. So I think,

(10:11):
like where a Nutter Dame is now is like a
miracle to me, honestly, because they could have been bad,
just like the whole cultural change behind it. Kelly staff,
there was a whole different aroma in there, I guess.
And then with this staff, even with the new guys
coming in, just like how they carried themselves and how
they talk to us and things like that, it's a
whole new culture. Not to say it's better or worse,

(10:33):
but just like having to adapt to that, having to
adapt to a new person, having to adapt to a
new like a buying to a new set of rules
and a new standard and a new everything is I
think I personally underestimated that. I didn't think we would
ever be, I would ever be in this situation that
I am now trying to get to know, like all
the coaches on the staff basically right, and we, like

(10:55):
I don't know, got lucky, I guess because we knew
coach Freeman, right, so he was hired and we kept
some of what we had, but like I mean almost
every team when their head coach leaves is someone completely different.
It's typically their defensive coordinating right. So yeah, and I
still wanted to want it. Yeah, like yeah, exactly. Rarely
do you get like a campaign for something and they

(11:17):
get it and it's like a new head coach came in.
I think everyone would have just as we said before,
everyone was had rally around Bayliss. Again, that's the rocks
for the program. I mean, obviously haven't been there this
past semester, but like just kind of looking at it
from now signing or it's halfway and halfway'all, whatever you
want to call up the point of view. I feel

(11:37):
like Freemant and Bayliss was kind of like the bridge
from Kelly era. They kind of understand what it used
to be, but they understand where they want to take it.
You see what I'm saying, Like you're just talking about
like as far as getting a brand new head coach,
like it would have just been a whole different vibe.
You feel me like you just don't really know, but
like I feel like free minute Bayliss do it there,
like you can kind of use people over into a
new a new phase of the program you know. Support

next up, we have some big news this upcoming week,
actually this weekend, everybody is going to be coming out
to l A. So all four of us will be
here and including Paul, our producer, Thank you Paul. We're
gonna be recording a podcast with Colin Coward at his house.

(13:49):
We're gonna have a very nice visual setting. So don't
just listen to the podcast, also go watch it on YouTube.
Very platform is gonna be on stuff like that, and
I think it'll be pretty dope. So you guys excited,
You guys live I'm excited. It's my first time gonna oh,
my second time going to California, my first time going
to l A. So and I got to see you.

(14:12):
I'm definitely excited. I mean, l A W now go
l A especially come from salath Bend. Yeah, and some
one mother, That's what I'm saying. I mean, I'm excited.
It's bad, but I'm excited just for the sun. Whatever
comes with it, it's gonna be plus for me. I
think it's gonna be dope. The podcast, like, I don't
think that's ever been done before really for college you guys,

(14:32):
or I guess I'm not college anymore, but for college
as guys that are like doing good podcast with like
a big media celebrity. And I think we're kind of
breaking around on this. So spread the word and it'll
be it'll be really fun to listen to us and
also send us suggestions to do what to do in
l A. M'll be good. He's some good food. It's

(14:54):
good dirty under a minute with Colin Coward. Oh yeah, no, yeah,
really need to do that. All right. I'm gonna ask
you this, what's the first thing that you think of
when you hear Los Angeles palm trees nice. I just
think of the weather. Honestly, I think expensive stuff expensive.

(15:20):
I think of traffic, but that's like than being from
back home, like traffic, bro the traffic out here mixed
with the gas prices, it's like it's terrible, but I
can see like five, it's like next near me, terrible
brow stupid. How I don't know you told me how.

(15:44):
I want to figure out how not how do we
fix that? Yeah, And I'm like, I'm gonna Tahoe so
it just eats gas. And when I go to go
to l A, like when I go in the city,
like it's the traffics and nuts, but I mean it
is fun, weathers really nice. People are different, but they're
cool different though. It's like, um, it depends where you're at,

(16:07):
but just from my experience I've experienced so far, it's
like you're either with a bunch of people who see
life through like a certain artistic view, or you're with
very rich people who see life through like a materialistic view.
And that was kind of barte that down down. Obviously

(16:29):
you're preparing for the draft or not. How much of
your time do you actually get through, take in and
soak in like l A or go for it. So
I was we get a good amount of time. We
get like a bunch of downtime in the afternoon, and
the weekends are pretty free and it's not like college
and a sense that obviously we gotta lock in and
like work out and like do your work and stuff.

(16:51):
But people were working out with is like, if you
can't make this thing because you've got something going on,
you gotta something you want to do, like just let
us know, and like we understand that you guys are
young men like who still want to experience l A
and stuff like that. So if you want to go
do something for less night, will reschedule. So they're pretty
flexible about it. And it's pretty dope and obviously coming

(17:11):
from Atlanta and like gets just from college from Indiana,
it cames from Maryland, so like none of us really
experienced l A like that before, so it still feels new,
which is good. I felt like Arizona is like a
tip Atona water type in say out West. Yeah, I
was sure different. Just from my perspect of what Cali
is going to be. Arizona Scott still would be comparison.

(17:34):
I feel like they're different though, I don't know what.
I'm just talking about people. Money, Yeah, dad day, I
think more of like a beach town like all that.
I think in California, Arizona, I think like I don't
think about that. Somebody said something to me the other day.
Here they're like a lot of celebrities live out here
because obviously there's a bunch of stuff to do. But
at the same time, people don't really care if your

(17:54):
celebrity because it's so saturated with celebrities. I did be
walking down the street there's like, oh, there's Michael Jordan's like,
whereas if he was in Atlanta. Even Atlanta, you're like
because there's not like a like a bunch of celebrities.
But I know it's different. But I'm excited if you
guys come out here, it'll be lit. It'll be fine.
Looking forward. Definitely podcasts gonna be money too. I'm looking
forward to that. Sure facts make sure every money. Everybody

(18:16):
tune in to share that. Tell your friends it'll be uh,
probably one of our best ones. Hope, hope it's helps
the best so far. Have you ever watched Definitely one
podcast yet, because I know there's a lot of people,
like a lot of podcast. I haven't really watched watched
one episode. I know you see the clips on Instagram.
Twitter is fine, but if you're gonna tap into one
podcast just happened to this one least, why not not

(18:37):
a son in the background? All that can we can
we get some like everybody retweet follow the podcast, we
will like sign something, give it to you or something
like that to get the lock that. We'll put some
details out for that. But uh yeah again, we're about
to link up in l A and have a Doublue

(18:57):
Pod with callin, so we're gonna wrap up this episode there.
We'll get all the details organized for the giveaway. But
thank you all for listening this week, and I hope
you listen next week's pot. Appreciate you all. Appreciate it
later
