Speaker 1 (00:02):
Hey, the folks, it is Tuesday, January twentieth and a complicated, unfortunate, ugly,
shocking and yes sad family drama is playing out for
the world to see. And it's happening to one of
the most famous families in the world. And with that,
(00:22):
welcome to this episode of Amy and TJ Robes. I
don't think it's a stretch we're talking about the Beckhams.
This is certainly the couple, but by extension the family.
Are they not one of the most and even long
term most famous families in the world.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Absolutely, it's Sir David Beckham as well. And then obviously
this is a power couple and not just a power
couple of power family. They have been extremely public. Obviously
they were celebrities in their own rights, but yes, when
they came together, their marriage, their business empires, their family,
their children.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
This is I think short of the Royal.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Family are the UK. Yeah, that makes sense.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
Probably the most famous family definitely in all of England.
Speaker 1 (01:07):
And we've known about them. They've been married decades at
this point, have they not. Yes, and four kids and
to I haven't said this out loud in a while,
but to put it in context, he is one of
the greatest footballers ever and led them to some of
their greatest successes. They're playing for England. She was a
(01:27):
member of the Spice Girls, yes, and they were came
together at a time where they were at the heights
of their fame and of their individual accolades, and they
brought those two together.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
And then to see Victoria become a fashion icon and
she is a businesswoman and a designer and people didn't
think she'd be taken seriously. So these are people who
have excelled, who are at the top of their games.
Obviously we know David Beckham and his football history and fame,
but he has turned.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
That fam into a platform.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
He's philanthropic, unist piece obviously on ads everywhere. These are
people who have tons of money, a huge platform, incredible
success and talent and seemingly we thought kind of a
perfect family. That is what is portrayed, or has been portrayed.
There have been rumors in recent months and we can
get into that about a falling out, but now unfortunately
(02:22):
those rumors have been confirmed.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
So let's move forward to where we are here. Now.
They do have four kids. Their oldest is named Brooklyn.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
How old is he Brooklyn Beckham is twenty six years old.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
He's twenty six to the boy, and this is the
one that for several months, I don't even know years,
but there have been I shouldn't even say rumblings, but
there have been signs even the family has given him
included about there being some type of rift in the family. Okay,
this is no longer rumors, This is no longer his hearsay.
This is no longer just a tabloid story. He has
gone on and written what I would say, just short
(02:56):
of an essay that he has posted on social media
in which he is absolutely blasting his parents for their behavior,
how he's treated him and his wife and robes Key.
Here he says he does not want reconciliation with his parents.
This is explosive stuff for this family, and we're going
to go through with you folks.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Yes, it's shocking, it's jaw dropping, and yes, Brooklyn Beckham
has sixteen point four million followers, and he put this
up on his Instagram story yesterday on Monday, and it
is still up guys, as of this recording. I think
Instagram stories last for twenty four hours, and as of
this recording, it's at our nineteen so it's still up
(03:37):
for all to see, and it begins like this. I
have been silent for years and have made every effort
to keep these matters private.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
Unfortunately, my parents and.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Their team have continued to go to the press, leaving
me with no choice but to speak for myself and
tell the truth about only some of the lies that
have been printed. I do not want to reconcile with
my family. I'm not being controlled. I'm standing up for
myself for the first time in my life.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
He goes on for my entire life. My parents have
controlled narratives in the press about our family. The performative
social media posts, family events and inauthentic relationships have been
a fixture of the life I was born into. Recently,
I have seen with my own eyes the lengths that
they'll go through to place countless lies and the media,
mostly at the expense of innocent people, to preserve their
(04:29):
own facade. But I believe the truth always comes out.
That was the first page.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
That was the first page.
Speaker 2 (04:35):
Yes, And then he gets into specifics about the rift
and when it first happened. And look, if you have
been following the Beckhams and you've heard these rumors. People
pointed to the fact that there was an issue at
the wedding, and so he goes into the wedding between
him and his wife, Nicola Peltz, she is I believe
thirty one now, but this was at their wedding in
(04:56):
twenty twenty two, and he begins life like this. My
parents have been trying endlessly to ruin my relationship since
before my wedding, and it hasn't stopped. My mom canceled
making Nikola's dress in the eleventh hour, despite how excited
she was to wear her design, forcing her to urgently
find a new dress. I wanted to stop here because
(05:19):
Nicola spoke to Variety the year of her wedding and
everyone noted she was not wearing a Victoria Beckham dress,
which is kind of mind blowing because Victoria Beckham is
a dressmaker and her soon to be daughter in law
is getting married, and so in response to her not
wearing Victoria Beckham's dress, she said, I was going to
(05:40):
wear Victoria Beckham and I really wanted to, and then
a few months down the line she realized that her
itelier couldn't do it, so then I had to pick
another dress. She didn't say you can't wear it. I
didn't say I didn't want to wear it. That's where
it started, and then they ran with that. So she
ended up wearing a Valentino Coteur gown for the ceremony.
(06:01):
So that was the first kind of notice that the
public had that maybe something was off. Then listen to
what Brooklyn had to say about the wedding itself. This
one was explosive. He said, my mom hijacked my first
dance with my wife, which had been planned for weeks
(06:22):
in advance to a romantic love song in front of
our five hundred wedding guests. Mark Anthony called me to
the stage where in the schedule was planned to be
my romantic dance with my wife, but instead my mom
was waiting to dance with me. Instead, she danced very
inappropriately on me in front of everyone. I've never felt
(06:44):
more uncomfortable or humiliated in my entire life. We wanted
to renew our vows so we could recreate new memories
of our wedding day that bring us joy and happiness,
not anxiety and embarrassment. That is significant, And look, he
was referring to the couple's August twenty twenty five vow renewal.
They put pictures up and notably, the Beckhams weren't there.
(07:09):
Her family, the Peltz family, was there. In fact, her
father officiated this renewal of the wedding vows. And at
the same time there are pictures of the Beckhams on
a yacht with their other children not in attendance.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
So that definitely raised a lot of eyebrows.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
I again, folks, try to interpret it this way or
that way those yeah, fine, look the speculation can end.
He has flat out saying what his version of events is. Please, No,
we're only getting one side of the story here, so
who knows. I'm sure they see it very differently, but
this is tough stuff for any parent to hear.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
Fame be damned, yes, and oh I cannot eat.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
I was actually I think every parent will put themselves
in this position going, oh my god, I said, Holy hell,
Holy hell. But he even goes to talk about what
his parents, he claims did weeks before the wedding. He said,
weeks before for our big day, my parents repeatedly pressured
and attempted to bribe me into signing away the rights
to my name, which would have affected me, my wife,
(08:08):
and our future children. They were adamant on me signing
before my wedding date because then the terms of the
deal would be initiated, my wholdout affected the payday, and
they have never treated me the same since. He goes
on to say during the wedding planning, my mom went
so far as to call me evil because Nicola and
I chose to include my nanny Sandra, and Nikola's nanny
(08:31):
at our table because they didn't have their husbands. Both
of our parents had their own tables equally adjacent to ours,
And he said the night before our wedding, members of
my family told me that Nicola was not blood and
not family. Since the moment I started standing up for
myself with my family, I've received endless attacks from my parents,
(08:51):
both privately and publicly that were sent to the press
on their orders. Even my brothers were sent to attack
me on social media before they ultimately blocked me out
of nowhere this summer.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
This is family drama. I mean, this is awful. A
lot of families deal with family drama, and it's this
was playing out in the worst of ways. And again
this was a one off, and who knows what's going
on in the background. But this is it's sad, it's
no matter what. This is a family. But a lot
of what he's suggesting that anyone in the press can
(09:26):
you would hate some here somebody doing that to their family.
But you know that pr machine around those two is
as powerful as any in the world. So he is
essentially saying they have used that power, that PR machine
against their own family and against their son. That's stuff.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
Uh yeah, And he is defending his wife throughout most
of this, and he talks about his attempts at reconciliation.
He said, my wife has been consistently disrespected by my family,
no matter how hard we've tried to come together as one.
This was interesting, he said, my mo has repeatedly invited
women from my past into our lives in ways that
(10:05):
were clearly intended to make both of us uncomfortable. Despite this,
we still traveled to London for my dad's birthday and
were rejected for a week. As we waited in our
hotel room trying to plan quality time with him, he
refused all our attempts unless it was at his big
birthday party with one hundred guests and cameras.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
At every corner.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
When he finally agreed to see me, it was under
the condition that Nicola wasn't invited. It was a slap
in the face. Later, when my family traveled to LA
they refused to see me at all.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
Yes, it is one side, but that's some pretty ugly
stuff and making personal attacks on two people who have
very public lives. He's making his mother sound like a monster.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
And his father too, but yes, his mother. And this
is where I just wrote.
Speaker 1 (10:52):
Ouch.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
This one, I feel like was one of the most
difficult parts to read. They were all difficult, but this
one was especially so. He wrote, My family values public
promotion and endorsements above all else. Brand Beckham comes first.
Family love is decided by how much you post on
social media or how quickly you drop everything to show
(11:14):
up and pose for a family photo op, even if
it's at the expense of our professional obligations. We've gone
out of our way for years to show up and
support every fashion show, every party, and every press activity
to show our perfect family. But the one time my
wife asked for my mom's support to save displaced dogs
during the LA fires, my mom refused.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
Okay, that sounds okay compared to some other things. He's
suggesting his mom did not helping out with some dogs.
Doesn't seem like it. That seems smaller but added to
the list.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
Yes, I just think the big thing is just saying
that they value their image over their son.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
Yes, that is the way he views it. I am
one hundred percent sure they would say something else, But
I could also understand that. Yet, you know what it
sounds like. It sounds like he's growing up in the
royal family. You're growing up in a family where you
have to understand you do have public obligations, you do
have a name, something greater than yourself that you need
to respect. You need to understand, and you need to
be a part of. This is a commitment. You didn't
(12:20):
ask for it, okay, but here you are. It really
does sound like he is a royal who doesn't appreciate
royal life. He sounds like I want to go party,
I want to do this, and I want you all
to be accepting of everything. No, not saying it's right,
but he is at least through this art does sound
like he doesn't like the life around him, and I
(12:41):
could understand why he might feel constrained or controlled. And
he's what now twenty six. Yeah, he wants to be
let go of these constraints and I'm sure the mom,
but the dress and the all do they approve of that?
This is every family deals with this right, But the
difference is we have to accept her and then wonder
about the public accepting her into the Beckham Royal family,
(13:03):
if you will. So this is a mess. Yeah, it's unfortunate.
This is just it's family. I hear so much and
just hear family.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
It's so interesting you made that connection or that parallel,
because I kept thinking as I was reading this. Obviously
Prince Harry has not gone I don't know. I don't
think he's gone this far. But that interview with Oprah
with Meghan and Prince Harry sitting down, I mean they
are still. They're in the headlines now still about this
rift between the King and Prince William and Prince Harry.
(13:32):
It sounds very similar.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
Well, you get to the point you want to tell
your own story. He has had no control over his
whole narrative for twenty six years, you could argue, so, yeah,
he wants to finally speak up. I'm yes, with love
you could keep it in house, But now other people
and the woman he loves being impacted by things done publicly.
So what is my I have to fight it publicly?
(13:53):
It's out there in the pump. Yeah, it's just the
private thing. What was the one you just mentioned there?
The Prince Harry, same thing.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
It seems very similar in that he went.
Speaker 1 (14:02):
And sat down with Oprah's to tell his story. Fine,
but man, did you have to talk about the baby's
black years and all this? Does baby look black? Did
you have?
Speaker 3 (14:11):
You didn't have to.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
That was a choice and this was a choice on
Brooklyn's part as well. And interestingly, when we come back,
his father, David Beckham, actually just made a pre arranged television,
live television interview with CNBC and he just talked about
his own kids and social media and their mental health.
Will tell you what David Beckham just said, and it's
(14:34):
very interesting because Brooklyn ended his Instagram story talking about
his mental health and what he wants for his future.
Welcome back to this episode of Amy and TJ, where
(14:55):
we are talking about Brooklyn Beckham's explosive Instagram story where
he went nuclear on his family, on his mom, on
his dad, on his siblings, and talked about what he
says he's been living with his entire life, but perhaps
specifically living through ever since before his wedding to his
(15:16):
current wife, Nicola Peltz Beckham, and he talks about his
mental health, he talks about what.
Speaker 3 (15:25):
He's been through. But we just heard from Sir David Beckham.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
He was just on CNBC's Squawkbox and he was asked
about kids growing up with social media and the impact
it has on mental health. Don't know if they were
trying to just make a general nod to what's been
going on, and obviously this is a huge story. They
didn't directly ask him about Brooklyn's post, but that was
(15:49):
the way they kind of got into it. And here
is what David Buckham said. I have always spoken about
social media and the power of social media for the
good and for the bad. The bad we've talked about
with what kids can access these days, it can be dangerous.
But what I have found personally, especially with my kids
as well, use it for the right reasons. I've been
(16:12):
able to use my platform and my following for UNISEF
and it has been the biggest tool to make people
aware of what's going on around the world for children,
and I have tried to do the same. I've tried
to do the same with my children to educate them.
Here's where people are pointing to they make mistakes, But
children are allowed to make mistakes. That is how they learn.
(16:33):
That is what I try to teach my kids. And
he kind of smiled sheepishly here and said, you sometimes
have to let them make those mistakes as well.
Speaker 1 (16:42):
They are furious at this kid. Furious. I am so sure,
But it's family. And there's the man that there is
nothing worse than a rift like this important to play
out in public for a family like this, it's awful.
Hopefully they find a way back to each other. Is
this is going to take a minute?
Speaker 2 (17:02):
Well, look, Brooklyn has every right to say his piece
and to finally speak for himself. But this is something
that is going to be very hard to undo. And look,
when it comes to your kid, you can probably forgive
them for just about everything. But when it comes to
your kids, they don't necessarily always forgive their parents. It
doesn't always work both ways.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
Well, his experience is his experience, and he is telling
his side of the story and how he viewed it
and how he experienced it all. Yes, and so we
have to take him and respect his experience and where
he is and how he feels now is just you hate. Look,
I didn't listen to those Spie girls. I didn't watch
England at that time playing soccer. But I know these two.
I respect, appreciate, and admire what they've been able to build,
(17:48):
and so I'm rooting for them and their family in
whatever weird way. You don't want to see this kind
of play out.
Speaker 2 (17:55):
Yeah, I mean yes, throughout my career, I've actually been
able to interview them both multiple times, and look, they
seemed pleasant and wonderful and kind and interesting and innovative
and all of those things. But no one really knows
what goes on behind closed doors. And Brooklyn ends his
post and this is where he is about his mental health.
(18:16):
He says, then, because he's upset, I guess the idea is,
or at what he's intimating is that his family has said,
or has or believes that his wife Nikola controls him.
So he ends his post with this. The narrative that
my wife controls me is completely backwards. I have been
controlled by my parents for most of my life. I
grew up with overwhelming anxiety for the first time in
(18:39):
my life. Since stepping away from my family, that anxiety
has disappeared. I wake up every morning grateful for the
life I chose, and I have found peace and relief.
My wife and I do not want a life shaped
by image, press or manipulation. All we want is peace, privacy,
(19:00):
and happiness for us and our future family.
Speaker 1 (19:04):
And that's all. She wrote. Sounds like he's going off
into the sunset.
Speaker 3 (19:08):
That is absolutely what. It sounds like, peace out.
Speaker 1 (19:10):
And I get how long has he been married?
Speaker 2 (19:14):
Well, they renewed their vows in August and that was
three years of marriage, so they've been together for three
and a half years married.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
And that's what She's an actress.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
Yes, actress and model, yes, and she's one of the
richest heiresses in the world. Her father is a very
very well known businessman, and she grew up It sounds
like similarly to maybe not exactly, but similarly enough to
Brooklyn and the Beckhams, where she was always in a
major life of privilege with a lot of eyes on
(19:47):
her family. And so I think they share in that
experience and are now wanting to.
Speaker 1 (19:55):
Go their own way.
Speaker 3 (19:55):
Maybe yeah, do something different with their lives.
Speaker 1 (19:58):
Well we shall, But again, heart goes out to any
family going through something like that and there's this happens
to be public, but hate it for them. We'll keep
an eye Just wanted to hop on an update. And
this is a story that really folks have been talking
about for quite a while, but certainly more so now
and it probably will continue through this week. But folks,
as always, we appreciate you spending some time here with us.
